A piece of news caught my attention today. A FPreported that:

Malaysia defends “worst car in the World” Perodua Kelisa

Thursday April 5, 2007, 3:38 am

Malaysia Wednesday defended a car made by national automaker Perodua after British motoring critic and BBC presenter Jeremy Clarkson labelled it the worst car in the world.

Abdul Raman Suliman, deputy minister in the prime minister’s department, said the British distributor of Perodua’s mini five-door Kelisa had never received complaints, the state Bernama news agency reported.

…In a February 2004 article in the British Sunday Times, Clarkson described the Kelisa as “a car built in a jungle clearing by people who go to work in shoes made from leaves”

In 2005, Clarkson actually made a video  (posted below)showing how he used a sledgehammer to dent a kelisa and then used a dynamite to blow it apart. I want to ask him ” which car can withstand an explosive?”  That’s why car bombs are being used by terrorists.

I think what he said is not fair to Malaysian. Whatever faults that Perodua Kelisa has as a car for  the lower income  group, it has enabled thousands of Malaysian to own a car fairly cheaply under the present circumstances.

It is a product of the much debated national car policy , no doubt, but under the restrictive environment, it has done well to enable thousands of Malaysians to have the type of mobility that our public transport cannot provide.

I am a critic of the national car policy . Without the tariff under the national car policy, Malaysian would have much cheaper imported cars. We actually don’t need a national car just for the pride of owning one.  I think the Thai system is a much better system and that is why Thailand’s car industries are more advanced now.

However, since national car policy is already in existence for so many years, under the present restrictions,  whatever fault that Kelisa has, we must remember that  it is not designed to compete with a Merz, BMW, Mini, Toyota or Hyundai. Even then, it is still a car produced with the help of the technology from Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota of Japan. Certainly, I don’t think it is the worst car of the world.

Malaysian, mind you Clarkson, also don’t wear shoes made from leaves. For that matter, we also don’t stay in tree tops. We stay in proper houses.

For those who wish to see how Clarkson annihilated our Kelisa, I will post a 4 minute video here. You can see firsthand how he hammered the car, tore it apart witha heavy weight and then blew it up with dynamite.

Kelisa is certainly not the worst car in the world – Especially when you have the likes of Kancil and Mahindra Jeep around.

Clarkson is an engineering manic. Things like oil consumption and affordability never really is an attribute that he looks at. He now has a new Talk on Show on BBC. Congratulations! A real absolute breakthrough! For the first time a monkey will have it’s own talk show. He he he.

Man…what an a** of a ‘white’ monkey he is. To me kelisa is an awesome car. The small size makes it very convenient in any kind of traffic, plus such a life savior. Heck I’m damn proud of my perodua kelisa. I drive my kelisa proudly to work & anywhere I go…wouldn’t wanna trade it with any other car. I’ve driven other cars, but i’ve never felt more comfortable than driving a kelisa. The only moron there is in this world, is the moron who’d spend ridiculously huge amounts of money on one ‘branded’ car with limited mobility (too big for its own good) and moreover with high maintenance. Well that’s just what i think…not referring to anyone in particular. LoL…well the point is kelisa rocks \m/,

Well 1st of all, im a proud kelisa owner. Been using this so called “worst car in the world” for quite sometime and I can definitely say i’m loving this car day by day. Hehehe… It’s a great car to drive and easy to maneuver and find parking space when u need one. hehehe…

In terms of fuel consumption i can say the kelisa really saves me a lot. seriously… I fuel up RM60 and i can drive around to work and back and only after 2 weeks then i need to refuel again.

So from my point of view this British dude only drives cars which is on the high end side. like merc, BMW, audi and so on. That’s why he hate this car so much. Because he can’t use to get around inside this car cause he is 6′ 5″ and don’t like cheap cars. hehehe…

Anyway he has his points. Then again I’m as a Malaysian is proud to own one of this unique car called “Perodua Kelisa” and loves to drive it everyday.

I am also a proud owner of perodua kelisa, have been using it for 14 years….It is a good car, low fuel consumption, affordable maintenance……

last but not least, perodua kelisa or perodua cars in general never have to recall their cars due to any issue…not unlike some popular cars from reputable car manufacturers which we heard news of they recalling their cars due to some issues……
