Avoid enforced solution

I refer to the news in Malaysiakini that blogger Nathaniel Tan was arrested yesterday, apparently under investigation for OSA.

I have been quite critical of the same opposition party under which NAt Tan was supposedly the webmaster. I have made known my views in some of my earlier articles such as Old wine in New bottle and This is how politics is played.

I don’t agree with the way this party was being run and I have doubt  about the sincerity  of some of the leaders in this party.

Nevertheless, I think it is not right to arrest their webmaster, or for that matter any Malaysian,  unless there is some concrete evidence that he can be charged in court. If there is concrete evidence, by all means charge him in court. Otherwise, he can be investigated without being arrested.

One of areas that the present government has done better than  before is that the press/media is more liberal and freer. The government is perceived to be more tolerant. So far, most bloggers can voice out their opinion with fear or favour.

So this arrest  would be seen as a dent on the more open policy that this government has portrayed so far. It would be a pity because it is a plus point in Pak Lah ‘s adminstration by allowing a freer discussion in the blogosphere.

Arresting a blogger would perhaps send a chill down the spines of some of the bloggers. The end result may be that some bloggers may go underground and what is there to stop them from using a pseudonym and an overseas based server to start attacking the government? I think it is better to leave the blogosphere as it is.

I think we should always remember what Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Nasrin ,  said a few months before: Avoid enforced solution, might is not equal rights and that nation building requires society to be tolerant, open and forward looking.

With this, I appeal to our PM to release Nat Tan immediately.
