Have a heart !

One of the blogs that i like to read is the blog called Buuuuurrrrning Hot, by an innovative young man called Scott Thong. I think most bloggers would have known him or visitied his site. He writes great articles which have come out in the various newspapers.

Following my post on NS 2 days ago, I came across Scott’s calculations on the risks of going into National Service Camps. The risk is very high , for a peaceful training camp.

For details of his calculations, please go to Scott’s blog. I will post here the conclusion and one of the photos ( above photo)  created by him.

CONCLUSION: Malaysia’s peacetime, no combat training, no enemy fire National Service is 46 times less lethal towards its participants than the US Armed Forces’ wartime, constant combat, plentiful enemy snipers and roadside bombs and suicide car bombs Iraq War.

Yes!!!! America lose to us!!! Malaysia Boleh!!!

(But God forbid what kind of statistics we will have in the event of an actual war.)

    Dear Dr.,

The US statistics should be viewed with some caution as it is not necessarily representative of the true state of affairs. US uses a lot of “independent contractors” aka mercenaries to clear their path as they pursue their “war on terror”.

Anyway, the real reason I am placing this comment is – please drop me an email. I have been trying to get in touch with you via your email but no dice. Cheers for this.

Nizam, my statistics are actually very shaky… The true total of NS deaths is uncertain, and the US deaths I use are only the US soldiers – no mercenaries, no Iraqi civilians, no terrorists.

But the comparison stands: Malaysian youths are sent by our government to partake in NS camps. US troops are sent by their government to partake in the Iraq War.

Scott, those of us over 50s are classified by society as old; though in the west, the thinking now is that life is at its best at around 60s.

Good comparison, who’s the kid, Scott? Not bad eh, our kids nowadays, so nationalistic and analytical at that.

But yes, I have to say we have to pin point what are the causes of the deaths and surely we can find a solution to all this. I know there are some politically minded people who would twist the whole issue around and call for it to be abollished, but come on let’s be rational and try to make it work. SOme of the comments about NS in those anti-govts blogs are pure senseless and erm, silly?

    Dear Scott,

I understand where you are coming from. I am a parent to a number of kids. And I can empathize with the parent in question as losing a child is probably one of the worst things that can happen to any parent.

Nevertheless, what is clear is that Malaysia is not the only country which has a National Service Scheme in place. And while your passion on this issue is admirable, perhaps there is a lesson somewhere in the aforesaid fact.

    Sometimes…the hang man noose….hangs a wrong person.
So the photo is appropriate…indicating our futures maybe on a hang man’s noose…swinging like a pendulum….depending on where the wind blows.
It’s time… all Malaysians get seriously…united…and don’t allow self interest….senseless race and religions doctrines….poisoned their minds….like backward simple jungle people.
Most of all…don’t let the little you have more than others through favoritisms by UMNO…through their decision…to pick and choose….who to be rich..who to be poor….keep fooling you…how great Malaysia is…just because some are lucky to be picked and made life comfortable for you by UMNO.
Those enjoying….what others do not have….are expected to be loyal and vote for UMNO.
Such style to manage a country..will surely get the country go bankcrupt!!
What happen to Klang filthy rich strong UMNO man…….Idros??? Can anyone tell me??
All Malaysians should be free from politics..to send the politicians….a message…we are their bosses.
Come election time…you will find ..who you want to vote..is for the country and the people…not for a party. That’s the real reason to vote!!
Parties will shiver from their pants…..if all Malaysians resign and be free from any party..and make their votes….truly secret.

It is more appropriate to compare the NS training with the Malaysian Army recruit training ie turning raw young men into soldiers.

Or in the more tougher training to compare with the Malaysian Special Forces Training or the Commando Course for trained soldiers to undertake special operational task.

I am sure you have hardly heard of any death during these training. Reason being they have all the apparatus in place, for eg a team of medical orderlies and and ambulance on standby at the place of training and the doctor on immediate call. The doctor would have also coordinated with the nearest hospital.

For the specialised training, the medical team is able to treat gunshop wounds and resuscitate the patient. Training in deep jungle, helicopters are tasked and on standby for evacuation.

Good point Meng… How come it seems no professional soldiers end up dead from food poisoning? Or is it just not reported?

I think Meng has a good point.

Military camps are always staffed with doctors, nurses and MAs. Military hospitals are very well manned and equiped.

Military has a special medical corps where all these medical staff belong.

But in NS, not so. MAs are only recently stationed in camps and these MAs are seconded from the Health Ministry. They do not have a medical dept as such.

Teenage mortality are supposed to be the lowest, because at their age, the immune system works well, they are active, cells regenerate fast and they recover from injury such as falls, trauma much better than people over 30s.

To have teenagers dying of foodpoisoning, asthma etc is just not acceptable. In fact, in medical schools, we are taught that no one should die of asthma,…except the very one and the very weak…. definitely not the teenagers.

Problem in Malaysia is that those ministers can not be held responsible for their faults and incompetent, due to “ketuanan” rhetoric they held dear to their mind, it is such tragic to see Malaysian families continue to loss their love one in the government sponsor “death trap” to rid ordinary citizen from the population.

Next time, before we send in any more kids to the death camps, send in the parents.

It’s the stupid parents who keep on sending their children to die for nothing.

At least, in America’s case, the US soldiers die so that oil keeps flowing into United States of America, powering their industries, and convenience to the people.

I am not saying that it’s alright or okay or whatever, I’m just stating the fact.

On the other hand, in Malaysia’s case, the kids die for nothing. Our nation gets nothing in return, except, of course, billions into the pockets of najis Mongolia, and his cronies.

    Oh well …

BTW, Scotty, if you read this, I do agree with your view on those liburuhs !

There’s a saying that goes like “If you ain’t a liberal before 25 years old, you ain’t got a heart. But if you are still a liberal after 25 years of age, you ain’t go a brain.”

That pretty much sums up what I think of those liburuhs !
