Gerakan, go back to the people !

Barisan Nasional is coalition of many independent parties. Some are raced based , like UMNO, MCA, and MIC. SOme are supposed to be multiracial, like Gerakan, PPP and most of the parties in Sarawak and Sabah,

It is in fact a loose  coalition. There is no BN party constitution or a common ideology governing the coalition. Each component party has its own constitution which lays out how each party is to be run, disciplinary matters regarding each party, membership, party election and so on. Each party also has its own ideology. For example, Gerakan’s ideology is to fight for a fair and equal society in a nonracial manner, whereas the race based parties stress on the protection of the rights of the race the party represents–UMNo will fight for the rights of the Malays and MCA that of the Chinese and MIC that of the Indians.

The membership and structure of each party is also very different. So it is quite correct to say that BN is a loose coalition and is not a single party.

Because of this, disciplinary matters are left to the individual party. Gerakan has its own disciplinary Board. MCA has its own and UMNO has its own. UMNO’s disciplinary board cannot interfere with the disciplinary matters of Gerakan, and Gerakan’s cannot interfere with disciplinary matters of MCA.

The rules are supposed to be clear cut, so that theoretically there should be  no interference of one party into the affairs of another party.

However, in practice, one party is above all others, and that is UMNO. UMNO extends  hegemony over all the others, so much so a former President of Gerakan , in a recent interview , said that all the component parties are like beggars. Coming from the mouth of a former president of a component party and a former minister for over 2 decades, this cannot be wrong, even though the grassroots of the component parties were never told of this before.

What was often told to the grassroots by leaders of these parties was that the leaders of these parties are fighting very hard inside the BN council meetings or the cabinet, but nothing was said of the begging inside BN council or the cabinet. Grassroots were also often told that all component parties are basically equal.

Last month, I have blogged and written a few posts on Lee Kah Choon who was roped in by the new Penang Government to help bring investments to Penang people. Please refer to this post: The Ball is at Gerakan’s foot. (which received a hits of over 5000 on the first 2 days of postings, besides being listed in Malaysia-today and published as a letter in Malaysiakini). This is a position like that of a civil service, and Lee’s acceptance had in no way of hurting Parti Gerakan.

A politician’s first loyalty should be to the people. If by taking up the directorship of PDC (which is not a political appointment), Lee is able to contribute to the developemnt of Penang, then no one should stop him from doing so. Sometimes, politicians must be prepared to go above partisan politics. This is especially true now that the country is facing so much of problems. The politicians should do more serious work and play less politics.

He was, however, forced to resign because after his acceptance  of the positions, Najib  asked what Gerakan was going to do in Lee’s case, and Gerakan subsequently issued a show cause letter. The rest is of course history.

Now, a similar case has arisen. This time it involves  Dr Tan Kee Kwong, who is the Gerakan Kuala Lumpur Chairman. He was invited to be the Co Chairman of a Task force to oversee Land matters in Selangor. This is an administrative position, again like that of a civil service. This position would have enabled him to tackle the problems faced by land owners in Selangor and increase the efficiency of the Land offices, which will translate to a saving of time and money for the land owning Raykat. There will be thousands and thousands of beneficiaries, if Land offices can be made more efficient .

So, who will benefit? The people will benefit. Even the non Land owners will benefit, because whatever cost that can be saved can be channeled to development of the State.

Political parties exist because of the people. Without the people , there is no party. This is the most basic fact. So, in helping to chair a task force which can help thousands of people solve their headaches and nightmares regarding land matters, why should  disciplinary action be taken against him? Why can’t leaders of political parties be less partisan and work more for the people?

Parti Gerakan leaders have publicly stated that they would go back to basic and go back to the people. Well, this is the best opportunity in fact to prove to the people that it is in fact going back to the people, by allowing its members to hold non political administrative position to help the people. To do otherwise will give a perception that the promise to go back to the people is only lip service..

The first person to ask that action be taken against Dr Tan is not from Gerakan, but a party outside Gerakan and he is Dato Seri  Najib, the deputy President of UMNO.. If you have understood the setup of BN, then you will know that all parties are supposed to be equal and that each party is supposed to take care of its own members.

What has UMNO got to do with Gerakan? This is an internal affairs of Gerakan. Gerakan has its own set of leaders, its own set of rules and regulations, its own constitution , and its own disciplinary board. The party is big enough to take care of its own problems and its members. Why should UMNO once again show its hegemonic streak in asking a non UMNO member to resign from his own party, when it is none of UMNO’s business?

The last election saw the trend of  the people abandoning Gerakan  and voting for Pakatan Rakyat, mainly because of the perception that a vote for Gerakan or MCA is a vote for UMNO.

Is this perception really true? Gerakan leaders often tell their grassroots about how hard they fight inside BN council and cabinet for the people’s interest, and that a vote for Gerakan does not translate into a vote for UMNO. However, by immediately issuing a show cause letters in both Lee’s and Dr Tan’s case after Najib commented, they have inadvertently confirmed the perception that a vote for Gerakan is indeed a vote for UMNO and that UMNO is still dictating the terms for Gerakan. This is one of the main reasons the party lost so badly in the recent General Election.

The party wants to reform, but reform starts with action and not from the lips.

No amount of brain storming or playing lip service to reform will endear the party to the people again, if this perception that Gerakan is doing UMNo’s bidding is not gotten rid of.

How to get rid of this perception?

I have mentioned many times to the party leaders that one way is to leave BN and be an own independent third force, where the party can support good policies of either Pakatan or BN, and criticise bad policies of either coalition.

The party leadership apparently is not ready to make this jump. OK. That will leave the second option. Stand up to UMNO and tell them to mind their own business. Stand up to them and say Gerakan is truly for the people and supports whatever is good for the people. Do not take action against members working for the benefits of the people.

Only by standing up to UMNO and show the people that Gerakan is made of tough materials, the perception of a vote for Gerakan is a vote for UMNO can be changed. What is the risk? I don’t see any risk at all… BN cannot afford to kick Gerakan out, because that would mean losing critical support when Anwar is threatening to entice 30 MPs to cross over.

In fact , by standing up to UMNO and exert its own right as a rightful and equal partner to UMNO, and by shielding its members from criticism from UMNO, it can endear itself to the people once again and prove to the people that this party is indeed keen to go back to the people, to go back to its ideology and go back to its grassroots.

    Dr Hsu,

Gerakan is fit for the tong sampah. Gerakan was formerly synonimous with Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, the icon statesman of the nation, not only Penang. Without people like Dr Chong Eu’s calibre, Gerakan is worth less than Hell’s paper notes!

    Sorry!

    Dear Hsu,

Here we go again! Well you know my position on this vide my letter of 20 April to the Acting President.

I’ll reproduce a part of it here :-

If I maybe so bold as to suggest, now is the best time for PGRM to leave the race politics of BN. With its 2 MPs, PGRM’s departure from BN will not cause BN’s downfall. It may trigger another ‘tsunami’ but at least it is in the forefront of something rather than be seen as a follower of ‘big brother’. Furthermore, leaving a ruling entity will only reinforce the perception that PGRM is not power hungry. Leave and vote according to conscience in Parliament. Even if you choose to stay, ignore the BN whip if it is for the benefit of the rakyat and country.

Do not be afraid of expulsion. Being expelled from the BN will only enhance PGRM’s stature amongst those who want a better Malaysia and desperately hoping that someone with a proven track record and credibility will speak on our behalf.

If you sit back…close your eyes…after reading all these messages by blog owners…..you can conclude…in Malaysia…politicians are real hypocrites and corrupted lot.
Very low class indeed….comparing to developed countries.
Around South East Asia…we were next to Singapore in so many things…educations…wealth…management…mostly due to our blessed wealthy country…with so many natural resources. So easy to manage…Malaysia.
Any idiot..can make the country successful…with sincere love for the country and it’s people.
Race and religion politiics were accepted…50 years ago…as seen …being wise and noble act ….by UMNO…..to bring their own weak race …..to be at par with the Chinese.
But 25 years ago…that should have stopped…yet it went on and on.
Therefore…the race and religion politics by UMNO of yesteryears were noble and smart…..but the race and religion politics of Mahathir and Dollah are covering ….one corrupted act …after another of UMNO’s evil doers….making a mockery of our so call…..free country. Daily …it is never free…and the worst that did not benefit…is actually the Malays…….who can never be free…released from their 50 years of bondage…with a compulsory religion…not of their choice…..but so call…….rights of birth.
All over the world….not one developed country have that rule….except perhaps few Middle East backward countries.
Yet UMNO wants to a modern ..send man to space..and project us as a free nation. In actual fact…it is out of no choice. Malaysians are getting smarter by the seconds…..so they find ways and means….to keep fooling youngsters.!! It’s also..dirty politics..against PAS.
Please sit back…and listen to the culprits….non stop bullshit excuses…..believing they will rule forever….as they keep finding ways and means..to increase the strength on their race…by refusing so many thousands…..marrying other race..to be citizens of Malaysia.
How else can they dare to be daylight robbers…if their system do not work?
But like all dirty evil system…thousands of Malays also married foreigners…with the partners….getting no Malaysian citizenship too.
But if one muslim is to marry another muslim from Indonesia…5 years…that foreign muslim is a Malaysian citizen…that easy. Other can wait and wait….till they die.
Here in Malaysia……becareful….UMNO is all out to increase their own race….by hook or by crook..
Just keep watching the percentage of other Malaysians going down and down…and one of the main reason….is..UMNO..will support all muslims women…bear as many children as possible…and UMNO will take care .. all the ..children …with guaranteed good educations.
Do they encourage other Malaysians to produce more babies??

I do not think…the failures of MCA and Gerakan were due to right or wrong candidates.
Malaysians had made up their minds….and daily…more and more were convinced to have a change in government….especially by the Chinese and Indians.
Observing ISA was applied…and people were treated like animals with tear gas and water cannons…noble and kind hearted muslims….who are members of UMNO….also joined in.
I think…if election campaign was given another two more weeks….UMNO would have gone too.
Truths have a powerful chance to expose lies..and only through election campaigns…can Malaysians listen to oppositions….from the horse mouths….so goes the saying…and decide….who is lying and who is telling the truth.

And as long as MCA and Gerakan are in the BN…they are actually… supporting race and religion politics…and are clearly puppets to UMNO.
To me….both parties are gone cases…especially Gerakan. If MCA pull out from the BN ..and admit other races into their party…and join the People’s Party…they may stand a chance to give DAP….a run for their money.
Both know their own weak positions…especially Gerakan. I expect more and more Gerakan member….will join DAP or keDAILan…sooner or later…and they need to close shop…before next election.
MCA with their “snoop” problem….will be proven …it is true….and there goes real…fighting within their own party…exposing…the evil and selfish some…..spoiling the good name of Malaysian Chinese…to stoop so low…to succeed….resorting to spying…and exposing private lifestyles of others. If they can do that to their own members…..just imagine ….what can they do to the Malaysian Chinese. So you see…they sold us off…for the past 25 years…caring only for themselves and few chosen ones….exactly same as Mahathir…doing to the Malays.
What terrible low class…..running dogs…some of these MCA politicians are.
That’ why…they are gone case too.

Going too tough against UMNO will have some risk. They will play the raical card more strongly. It’s indeed tricky situation here.

Despite the existence of many chauvinist in UMNO or other political parties, I do take heart that there are a few emerging ones that are more reasonable.

Changes in some others can be seen.

I do agree that a tougher stance with UMNO is needed. Do it with tact though.

They would be going back to the basic – what can be more basic than money. So they are telling you they are going back to the gravy train.

And ‘going back to the people’ – what they are telling you is that they are going back to the people they are comfortable with. So who are they? The UMNOputras and their fellow-golddiggers, of course!

Should Gerakan, MCA or other component parties of BN request that Umno take up disciplinary action Umno members that fan racial sentiments? Would all component parties of Bn other than Umno take up a common stand that our legislature do something seriously on anti-discrimination laws that those laws enacted in the more CIVILIZED countries like the USA, UK etc? I don’t know why I must waste my time to delve into this issue as we all should think that BN is already a dinosaur and everyone of us should make sure BN and its component parties will be a thing of the past. It doesn’t matter what action you have to take against another member for jumping ship to serve the people. What we shouldn’t deny is that Gerakan member is talent, capable and know how to run the government. It seem that Pakatan Rakyat led government is busying looking for scapegoat and playing politics. Is it for their political mileage? What we the rakyat want is to move forward?

Do they have a proper programmes for urbanization, discard squatter problems in their state, social development, local government issues, civil service moving forward to do their jobs, coping proper educational programmes and etc for the betterment of Malaysians?

Is Gerakan still relevant in the present political scenario and the coming years? GERAKAN should review, reinvent and recruit commited members to realise the political ideology among the younger generation. We need leaders capable to garner support from every level of society.

This is wrong that a leader from the other component parties intefer in the internal problems. Let GERAKAN settle his own problems and recope with the current scenario. Do we think Pakatan Rakyat led government don’t have their enrichment programme. Sama tahu tahu..lah

But unfortunately these dogs have no BalXX and also do not how to bark. In cantonese we call them “”The Front House Dogs” When a UMNO dog comes near to the house, their tails will slip between the two hind legs and when the UMNO dog barks, the Gerakan dogs pee & run for cover.

It’s wrong if you say that Gerakan react to Najib’s statement which to me,Najib has no right to say anything. Gerakan decided to issue showcause letters immediately when the appointments were announced. Najib’s comment came subsequently. But some people purposely twisted the facts. In Lee Kah Choo’s case,he demanded to be the next Gerakan State Chairman and by logic the next Chief Minister. When the party asked him be patient, he quickly took up the PDC post. All for personal interests. Serving the people? Don’t cheat ourselves. The government post is the motive. If we go by your logic, can Koh Tsu Koon take up the PDC Chairman post when Lim Guan Eng offers him the same? Or to accept a Senator post proposed by Penang Assembly and the latter demanding Pak Lah to appoint Koh as Minister to look after Penang interest. Don’t think DAP are so charitable. They are out to kill Gerakan.

Meng, don’t be a fool. No such thing as vetting of speech by PM before the party’s presidents making the speech. A text is given to BN President early so that the PM can prepare the answers to the issues raised. JUst like in Parliament, you have to submit your questions early for the relevant departments to prepare the replies. BN Presidents want to find out early what the party wants to focus on,so he can reply accordingly.

What have GERAKAN done for the last 40 years in Barisan Nasional government especially in Penang? We cannot deny Gerakan have brought forward a vibrant, prosperous and economic development to Penang. We can see Penang have change from a small fishing village to a metropolitan tahat boost of foreign presence. Some even treat Penang as their second home. Just came back from Penang, we can use the Jelutong Highway, spacious walkway for recreation, Penang Bridge, scenic hotel along the Ferringi Beach, prosperous hawker hawking their ware along Gurney Drive, high rise condominum and many…many more.

We cannot deny Gerakan can fulfill every single Penang lang needs and aspirations. But we must know the source of water that we drink as the Chinese say. Gerakan is no lackey, front dog for anybody or ran away as some might think. Gerakan will move forward and gain back the trust.

Ask yourself what have PR led government done for the rakyat even they are given the opportunity to govern. Still playing the old game of psychology warfare to pinch Gerakan able, talented and know-how members. Busy doing public relation road show to pick fault and mistakes. UMNO’s one and only card is the racial card and really, voters irrespective of races should put UMNO into “extinction”, ONCE and for all. As long as UMNO exists and the other running dogs, the country will continue to suffer. We only have to look at nearby and neighboring countries already whizzzz-ed past Malaysia in almost every accomplishments especially the economy and the human resource development. UMNOputras are the most divisive and useless people, the power abuse, the denial syndrome and the destructive mindset. All said and done, the Pakatan alternative must be supported to work. At least the people have a choice or realistically put these idiots UMNOputras on their toes. These crocodiles will improvised the nation in no time. Monk

DAP and Pas work together because of hatred against BN and many supported them because of hatred towards this bloody BN. There is nothing common between DAP and Pas. Ideologically, they are world apart. Wait till they destroy BN,the war between DAP and Pas will commence. That unholy alliance is not long-lasting. It’s a marriage of convenience. One is a racist party and the other a religious bogotry. What happen to all these politicians? You read the Romance of Three Kingdoms, then you can understand these bloody politicians in both BN and Penipu Rakyat or read the Art of War from Sun Tze.One day,DAP may even join BN when the time is right. Politic is an art of impossibility.

Please Omo,Gerakan is in opposing camp against the Penipu Rakyat Government also. Wait till we are together, then we can work together; so Gerakan should not take up post in PR now like what the DAP did in Kelantan and Trengganu before. Members must play as a team.not by personal interests. One must have principles and must not be a hero forgetting the team-mates.

Casting aside the personal reasons for these 2 persons for taking up these positions, Gerakan has in fact lost a golden opportunity to turn this around to its advantage, and that is partly why I am blogging on this.

Gerakan leaders could have just said that they will wait and see how things are going in these 2 cases since these are not political appointments, (unlike senatorship and councillorship, or even village committees, where voting along partisan lines may be called for) .

If later on, these 2 persons perform well and the people show gratefulness to these 2, then Gerakan can come forward and claim credit, instead of all the credit going to Pakatan.

If the party leaders think that this is a game played by DAP, by showing magnanimity to these 2, it could have been turned the whole game into Gerakan’s advantage and instead , checkmate DAP.

If later on, the party finds that these 2 have in some way breach party discipline or have done something wrong to make people suffer, , the party can always take action then and put the blame on DAP and that would have shown to the whole rakyat that it is magnanimous, it is for the people.

I am speaking from the point of geting back the support of the people and how the public is viewing the whole episode.

By acting in the way it is acting, it is only taking the party’s short term interest into consideration, and not the long term endearment of the party to the people. On the ground, a lot of people are saying that Gerakan is wrong to take action against these 2.

We the rakyats are the REAL FROGS because we switch parties!! 50 years married to Alliance and then BN does not means we continue to hitch to BN and especially Gerakan which is a racist party dominated by Chinese and most members are ex MCA. Gerakan claims to be conscience of BN but always toe the UMNO line. It is time to close shop because it is a mosquito party and unable to reformed as the power base in penang has been slowly eroded after Tun Lim Eu Ching

Frog, please read the article by Dr Chua SOi Lek at this link about Dr Tan Kee Kwong.

    http://drchua9.blogspot.com/2008/06/on-datuk-dr-tan-kee-kwongs-decision-to.html

Dr Chua is of the opinion that there is nothing wrong to serve the people.

Democrats serve in Republican cabinet and vice verswa. That is true democracy. To get the best to serve. That is why US is so much advanced than us.

You people are too partisan and you can see the hands of the old wolf in all these.

DAP racist party ?? Well, which party is the one that field ONLY CHINESE candidate in last election ??

    It is GERAKAN.

DAP fielded many Indians who not only won State seats but also Parliament seats.

Yes, DAP had problems attracting Malay members,
but so does Gerakan. No doubt due to MSM painting them as chauvinistic party.

Still many have forgot that only Lim Guan Eng stood up for the underage Malay girl in the infamous statutory rape case involving a high level politician from Barua Nasional, no less.
And he has to spend many years in prison for it.

Have any Gerakan leaders stood up for the Malays ?

Why would Rina Bhar, one of few Indian lady member accuse Gerakan as racist party and resigned ??

Please lah, Gerakan enemy is UMNO, not DAP nor PAS.

If you too stupid to see that, well, we Rakyat will always put you in you place. Which is the jamban in BN big bungalow.

Btw, isn’t it UMNO who claims that under KTK, the Malays are marginalised in Penang…

Come on, even your own political master, UMNO is accusing you of being racist…

    …end of story…

Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu… if you love Gerakan… please step in now and correct it, or forever hold your peace, as it goes into pieces.

    pohwatchdog,

No need to brag about development in Penang.
It is the responsibility of any government to bring development to the state under their care.

However, as a Perakian living in Penang now, I would like to ask Penangites if they feel their “quality of life” has indeed improved with all these development ?

Who needs development, when it meant getting stuck in jams day-in, day-out wasting time and fuel going to work ?

Who needs development, when the few green lungs on the island, is being yanked out and tried to be converted into more commercial land, like the infamous PGCC ?

Who needs development, when your beach and near-shore are getting polluted to the point that hardly any fish worth catching (I’m a fishing kaki) ?

Who needs development, when the 36-storey apartment by the sea, which goes for RM1mil+, which no locals can afford, is blocking our view to the sea ?

Counting Penang as 2nd home ?? I’m just counting the days when I can move back to Perak, where I can enjoy better quality of life, in a less polluted environment.

Hi… I just found out this entry… and I got to agree full heartedly… 🙂

But I also aware that the first “political” (as some people from BN would call it~) appointment by Pakatan Government was actually this ex-ADUN 赖秋富…

He was appointed as a Co Chairman on the Dragonboat championship committee…

It’s a sports matter… and he was the person who had been chairing the committee since the successful bid of the Dragonboat championship… His appointment was credible enough unlike the appointment of Lee Kah Choon, which the acting president of Gerakan claimed that LKC got no experience and incapable in investment since he was parliament secretary of Ministry of Hell instead~~

Najib said nothing regarding this (dragonboat) appointment… heck, even the Penang UMNO, or the Penang Gerakan did not grumble in the media about it…

It was until the LKC saga… that the Gerakan “revised” such appointment…

and in the end… he rejected the appointment…

    Sad story…
