Monorail, PORR and BN’s bye bye to Penang

Malaysiakini in a report“EPU: Penang monorail, Porr shelved” mentioned that:

Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister’s Department today said that  the RM2 billion Penang Monorail and RM1.5 billion Penang Outer Ring Road have been shelved.

According to EPU director-general Dr Sulaiman Mahbob, projects that are not people-centred under the original Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) will be put on hold or deferred…………

…..Met later, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the deferment of the two Penang mega-projects was not a punishment on Penangites who voted in the opposition-led state government

Penang is a small island which is heavily populated and the population is increasing. Because of the poor transport system within the island, there have been a tremendous growth of  motor vehicles clogging the road system, resulting in degradation of living environment and quality of life. Penang Island is badly in need of a good public transport system such as the monorail. To shelve it citing that this is not a people-centric project is like telling people that ‘chalk is black and charcoal is white’.

Monorail and PORR are projects that are desperately needed to improve traffic congestion and the mobility of the people , thereby improving the economic and investment climate of the Island. If these projects are not people centric, then I would like to ask what are the criteria to define whether a project is people centric? Does it mean that any project benefitting those who vote for opposition is not considered people centric?

Immediately after the General Election, I wrote a post ‘Do not punish the people and play with fire’ asking the government not to punish the people by withholding the projects. Later, when the leaders threatened to scrape the second Bridge project, I worte  another post ‘From Penang Bridge to PKFZ”, and I quote from part of that post:

……I suggest that Penang people ask the government to let them know how much income tax and road tax are collected from Penang residents alone annually. If the project takes 5 years to complete, then what is the total tax paid over 5 years? Ask the government to take a portion say 10 percent of these taxes to build . If government refuses, take the government to court as a first step. There would be more drastic steps, but first step first.

Another way is to ask those involved in the PKFZ thing to foot the bill for the second bridge. Afterall, the whole cost of the second bridge is smaller than the amount involved in the fiasco.

Penang people, with a higher income and more affluent than the national average , pay more taxes than many other states. I would like to ask the Finance Minister to reveal how much Penang people contribute by way of tax to the national coffer, and how much of this contribution were actually spent on Penang itself?

Now, by shelving the Monorail and PORR projects, Penang people will doubtlessly suffer. There will be more traffic congestion and environmental pollution as well as more time consumed in travelling from one place to another. Quality of life will deteriorate, no doubt.

But as a former Penangite, with still a wide network of classmates, friends and relatives in Penang, I can tell you that Penang people will be more determined to vote against BN and UMNO, and they will be more determined to vote the BN out of Federal government the next round. Do not forget, Penangites’ influences are not confined to Penang itself. There are many former Penangites residing in KL and other Urban centres in West Malaysia. These people will never vote BN again and would campaign hard to convince others to change the Federal government.

Parti Gerakan, with its home base in Penang, will be hard hit by this, if they still cling on to UMNO and BN. Many Gerakan leaders thought this election is a fluke and people would vote them back again. With this announcement, Gerakan can say goodbye to recapturing the State.

    Dr Hsu,

My advise is : Get yourself out of Gerakan immediately or you will be branded as idiot sooner or later.

The writing is on the wall : Too many highly qualified scholars occupying highest seats in Gerakan are too naive and remained deadly passive in pursuing their political ideology despite being repeatedly stepped over. What an coward and eunuch behavior.

You are right, Koh Tsu Koon can kiss and say good bye if PORR and Monorail project is shelved.

Now i understand the Chinese community always equate politician as person of grade nine intelligence. Please allow me to say this : Gerakan and MCA politician are hopeless and beyond remedy. If they continue to exist, it will be disastrous to the Chinese community. Lets destroy them once and for all, don’t even let their ashes left behind in our soil.

There are other bloggers who as we speak, are gathering forces and influence to take this announcement by the gov in the good way. In particular, they focus on the environmental impact the PORR would have on Tanjong Bunga’s fisherfolk, and are advocating for trams too. I understand that nerves is still raw and there might be good reasons that people are angry, but I really don’t think the BN is doing this to punish the Penangites. If Terengganu is to be of any example, the BN gov would want to win back the states that they lost, yes? Some are also seeing this as an opportunity for the Penang State Gov to step up and be more directly involved in the development of other aspects of the public transport system, for eg the suggestion of state own bus system. Instead of getting angry, I suggest great minds like yourself and a number of others work together to provide input and perspectives to the healthy debates. If you would permit me, Dr Hsu, I’ll gladly provide you with the links to those other blogs.

I spoke to a moderate chinese Penagite and was told that “we’ll not bring BN back whatever happens” .
Penangites should be ready to struggle for around 4 years . Let the GE13 bring another tsunami at federal . The sooner the better .

I agree with you Dr. Hsu, it is BADLY needed to really do something about the traffic jams in Penang. First and foremost, I’m wondering whether the fuel increase actually helped in discouraging the use of cars on the road?? But apart from these 2 ways, I’m sure there are other ways too.

I’m for the use of TRAMS in Penang! (Supporting anil netto’s tram proposal 😉 )More environmentally friendly and definitely more viable. And with the hike in oil prices, building another highway in Penang doesnt make much sense.

    Dr Hsu,

I think this is very good news for Penangites. The Pakatan State govt can now have a clean slate to prove itself by coming up with a first class blueprint on public transport. I was never impressed with the two projects. The main concern was the awarding of the contracts. The second was the quality; and the third was the maintenance aspect. Anil through his blog has initiated trams, but I think trolley buses are a better choice.

Everything UMNO does……is gaining mileage for it’s party….first…people’s benefits…come second.
Yes…this is a political decision..under the disguise of telling their usual cock and bull reasons….for or against.
If Gerakan still rule…UMNO will say..they will deliver all….as promised.
It is their usual message to voters…vote against us….you will suffer.
This was also practice by PAP..in Singapore…warning voters may suffer this or that…voting against them.
But PAP is a world respected clean and uncorrupted party. Thus PP can judge…warn and sue anyone..trying to spoil their reputations.
Here..we have nice UMNO guys….forgiving and ignoring accusers….even as murderers.
One must clearly understand…RPK cannot reveal anything to the police …except being charged and go to court.
All Malaysians hould understand…investigations by the police…will never be in favour of RPK…unless RPK bring along the witnesses.
Only a bloody fool will comply. Therefore…this is just a wayang kulit….to announce no case against Rosmah…making Najib so proud.
And to get Mahathir telling Malaysians that DAP and RPK are not interested in justice…trully make that man….the best of the best twisters and crooked brain have no equal to him….in Malaysia.
He gave a press conference against Judge Ian Chin….spent 99% of time…..talking and exposing the Judge of another matter….and when come t the real subject…the boot camp…he had one sentence to say…no one complaint..except Judge Ian Chin.
Mahathir is fast…..like a magician…and one needs to think as fast as he….and that’s no more a problem…..now…for millions of Malaysians are smarter than Mahathir. He will stoop so low …to cheat and lie….earning the reputation…as the dirtiest ..evil minded leader….great skills in twisting and turning fact into fictions and vice versa…..with his great acting skills…and sickening evil brain.

I tend to agree with Justin Khoo.
Now Eng Guan can focus…how to get tourists into Penang.
First and foremost…organize better road systems and make sure Penang is a sparkling clean city!!
Put out plenty of big trash bins…every where for people’s conveniences………like in shopping complexes. And have police on the beat..to catch and find people throwing things around…as well as catching beggars.
Copy Haatyai!!! Tourist needs all round activities and up to 4am….food stalls..because by 5am…government..road cleaners start cleaning the city.
Love to see horse and carriage and toot toot transportations. Trishaw is good only for short distance. The toot toot will give tourists a good options against taxi and bus. More options….means more transportation services for tourist to enjoy.
Have traffic police team…from morning..till evening…..not just few hours.
Massages in Penang cost too much!!
Give licences to people to bring in Thai cheap massage….costing RM1O an hour. Right now…RM70 or more is the market price in
Penang. Obviously…these are prostitutes. Many want good pure cheap massages.
Yes….Penang was also welknown for beautiful prostitutes…and confine to hotels. Let that be. Lets not be hypocrites. Many say go to Haatyai or Bangkok..for golf..are some are infact…having different fun…..and be a salesperson..to catch all sorts of fishes…not expect everyone to enjoy..being goodies..your yourself. I am talking to Lim Eng Guan….and Jeff Ooi.
Yes…..turn the Pearl Of the Orient…….back to it’s days……when Frankie Laine went to Penang…..met Rose Chan…and wrote the song…”Rose Rose I love You”….became a world wide hit…advertising Malaysia….free of charge.

In the first place, one of the major issues that Penangnites have against the former Penang government was the PORR, which was riddled with suspected contracts. Now that the PORR is scrapped we should be rejoicing as the Government has bent to our will.

The only course of action is for the current government to come out with a better plan that is completely CAT to show that DAP and the Pakatan can manage the state ably and sensibly.

will the govt come clean on this? are there such option holders? if there are, who are these people? what are the terms of these options?

yh, if you ask me , I think there is no smoke without fire.

If they have nothing to hide, then make everything transparent, every dealing and so on. NOt just the accounts.

As for PORR, yes, there are many NGOs and residents against this. BUt monorail or a mass transit is necessary for Penang. But even for PORR, there are certaqin good aspects of it. It could have been modified. By shelving the projects, Penang voters will think that the government is punishing the voters who voted the opposition. Perception is everything in politics.

I agree with some of you that in a way this is a good thing for the Government to plan for an alternative scheme to relieve the traffic situation and to improve public transport. Tram may be a good idea, but bus service must be improved.

As for Y C CHai ‘s good advice, I am waiting to see whether there is any new strong leader to come forward to take Gerakan out of BN…If there is, then I think there will still be hope . This is an election yr, and I hope to see some changes in the central leadership in the next 2-3 months.

I would recommend that Penang Pakatan government must come out with its investment arm or Create a pool of financial resourses by creating a Penang Korperasi. whereby the investor will invest in this korperasi for loaning the money to Penang government to finance local project that will benefit penang people. for example :
Penang Korperasi Supermarket: cheaper food product then the existing foreigner supermarket which too much High Profit margin,
Penang Korperasi tourism resort : like singapore Pasir Ris. tourism resort. for foreigner and member with discount.
Penang Korperasi Toll: take over all the concession toll in penang. and charge a min. amount toll and use our local MPPP and JKR for maintenance to reduce the toll charge.
Penang Korperasi Transport : Integrated all the local public transport. must controll taxi, bus and tram into a single entity of transport system. oh ya, clear up the Pesta area into a full Public bus and express bus area. and close down the Komtar bus station. (that area is not touris friendly area. too messy) demolish the Pesta building because u only held Pesta every end of year, is a waste of public fund for this building maintenance.

and Of course the Korperasi will earn some interest of loaning the fund. it is like a big mother company that we Penangite and Resident of Penang will benefit the end result. rather then we have to depend on the federal funding. secondly Penang development progress will not be hamper everytime the federal is changing government or due to weak local state governemtn like our Gerakan x-CM Mr Koh.

As an engineer, and having seen at first hand the “funding mechanism” of typical federal govt mega ‘no-bid’ projects, the cancellation of the PORR & Monorail projects will DEFINETLY NOT be a loss for Penang State.
Political ‘mark-ups’ which first became a norm during the previous govt, are much more obscene under the current govt. Thus any pluses arising will be negated by the financial burden of such no-bid deal.
My advice is for the Penang state govt (if the federal constitution permit) and in cooperation with the other Pakatan State, to look for alternative fundings for infra structure projects.
However, remember that most developed economies also have a well established agriculture sector (look at EU & USA). It is perhaps also pertinent that the Penang state (& other Pakatan State) should focus also on the agriculture sector.

It is a blessing indeed for not continue the monorail an porr. Monorail and porr will aggravate traffic congestion problem in Penang. Just look at what is happening in KL.

There is no other way to solve this congestion problem other than to control car population on the road and have a good system for bus route. Just learn from Singapore. JB is too proud to learn from Singapore, but not Penang, I hope.

Here is what i think, we should have a effective transport system and also a enviroment which will support public to use the public transports. Example, if we have a monorail system now, will you (penang lang, who use to travel by mcycle or car) travel from your house to town to buy something or to have your hokkien mee, with no trees for shade and no proper walking lane or trail..just image la..all previous mega mega projects are to plan for masuk pocket..I think tram will be suitable and people will want to use it more because we dont have to walk so far or high to take the monorail(i,sure lazy)..as tram can stop more stations and tram can share the road with other transport, car ,bikes and so on..and it doesnt change our city landscape,as monorail will need pillars high up..thats quite..ugly

Sorry people for being absent from the blog the past few days. (Had to deal with the passing of my father’s sister the last 1 week)

Wow! 31 comments in 1 day. Guess Penangites are as infuriated by this move as I am.

Here’s my take on the cancellation.

Whilst it may be construed as punishment for Penang voting in the ‘opposition’, I think it has more to do with consolidating their political position.

IMO, I think its a case of BN having 10 woks with 8 covers and they have to rotate the covers around without all the contents evaporating away.

Given this scenario, the logical choice on how to apply your limited resources would be to consolidate your borderline states, placate those who support you but are now making noise and work at those ‘opposition’ states that have the greatest chance to return to BN. Basically 8 covers won’t do the job so 1 wok has to be sacrificed.

In Penang’s case, I think they realized that its a foregone conclusion. Penang will not go back to BN for a long long time to come with or without these 2 projects, so they divert the funds for these projects to areas where they have a more reasonable chance of succeeding.

    Its all about strategy!

Which brings me to Gerakan’s current position. Doc, someone needs to give the leadership a tight slap and say “WAKE UP!”

Yes they are right in believing that the PR is also not going great guns. (I’ll expand on that later). But they fail to realize that in Penang, the majority of the rakyat are educated, fair-thinking, exposed people, who won’t so easily fall for UMNO’s propaganda. We are not kampung folks here!

Doc, like you, I can’t stress enough that the time is ripe for a political entity to take the middle-ground and offer a viable 3RD ALTERNATIVE.

Strategically speaking, the middle ground is there for the taking! And Gerakan with its multi-racial ideology is in the best position to gain from it. It couldn’t have asked for more, a literate and intelligent electorate to gain and one who will fairly judge sincere efforts.

Surely this would be the best chance of regaining relevance if ever there is one, where people are more inclined to listen to reasoning than emotional rhetoric!

Now before I get slammed by those who are so angry that detracting support from the PR is considered blasphemy, let me expand on what I know of the 100 day old PR government of Penang.

Basically its a DAP show despite the nice sounding name of ‘alternative coalition government’. There is no coalition and it is in name only.

Whilst I would like to see them succeed, they are not helping themselves by their own attitudes. They are unable to move away from their ‘opposition’ mentality to that of one who is in charge of the administration of Penang.

    Case in point;

I received a call from a staunch member of DAP whose father is a veteran and high ranking member of DAP.

She asked “How are things going on at your side of politics?”

I answered “Like crap! I can’t get the leadership to see the need to leave the BN (UMNO). Things must be great for you”.

She said “No lah! My father is so pissed-off with whats going on that he intends to blast the leadership at the next DAP convention”.

    I said “What happened?”

She said ” Do you know that there are 3-4 camps in KOMTAR now? Each with their own personal agenda to fulfill? Apparently they have forgotten about the people who put them there!”.

Not knowing what to say, I said “Aya, it seems nothing has changed. Better we enjoy ourselves now since this country and its politics are screwed-up”.

    She agreed!

Idealism and pragmatism unfortunately is unable to go hand-in-hand in Malaysia.

CAT = Competency, Accountability and transparency.

Thats all we Penangites want. Will we get it? Well we had hope at the start but the corruption part is starting to creep in from the administrators. I would like to stress that its still not as bad as from the UMNOputras but its creeping in nonetheless.

    Another case in point;

The DAP came into power in Penang unexpectedly. Even they didn’t expect it but now that they are in power, they have to do all the mundane necessary things like setting up service centers, channels of communication with the people, etc.

And they are finding it hard to do for the lack of $$$. It hasn’t reach a crisis point like that of BN(UMNO) yet, but at lower levels dealings with the Penang government, the hint is already there that they are prepared to ‘talk’.

So much for idealism! Pragmatism rears its ugly head!

In a nutshell, Malaysian politics is screwed! What we have now are choices between ‘a rock and a hard place’. Crooks and racists on the one side and loud-mouthed bungling idealists on the other!

Dr Hsu, do you know of a Malay intellectual who is untainted from the past, who is willing to lead a viable multi-racial third alternative?

It is pretty much expected from umno centric BN broken their promises and punish Penang, as you shouldn’t expect gangster n racist party like umno to fulfill promises, and not terrorize Penang state government. DAP lead Penang shouldn’t be disappointed at the cancellation of federal funding of state projects, give yourself some times to learn about corruption and mismanagement, without the experience of these management skill similar to BN, Penang will never be considered in federal development fund, can not be fully crooked like umno, how to give you fund to waste if you want to do it right?

Shelve or proceed project by UMNO will be based…..first and foremost… benefits for the party.
Talk as much as you like…they are still managing the country…and is now showing their true colors.
They know Malaysians have short memories..and are basically thinking for themselves….not for the country.
So come few months… from 13th election…all the actors and actresses of UMNO and BN…will give their best performances..making Malaysians happy…sort of subtle briberies…to win vote.
They are very faithful to the art…performed by an American …circus man..coining the word by himself…..”Every second ..born a sucker”
Majority…Malaysians are basically… suckers.due to race and religion dirty politics.
So dear friends….do your part….walk the talks,.by voting them out….next election.

    Romerz,

A third alternative at this point in time may spell disaster, and BN (UMNO) may again gain grounds with the split votes. This will be a great tragedy for the nation.

As I said before in the worst scenario, it’s better to have 2 devils than one. Such is the present political battle ground.

    On your comment:
[She said ” Do you know that there are 3-4 camps in KOMTAR now? Each with their own personal agenda to fulfill? Apparently they have forgotten about the people who put them there!”.]

My opinion is that under our present political culture (which is not much to shout about), I am not surprised the above is happening. Which political party or which government is 100% squeaky clean? Since we are “beggars” now, there is not much for us to choose. Jeff Ooi is a figure of contention in one of the forums (usj.com.my) which ran to 5 pages going no where and the admin decided to close the thread. I am also one of those who is very very disappointed!!

Until we can have the good fortune of effective leaders like Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu, it will just be pipe dream for wanting a CAT Government. Right now I will be just be contented to have a mongrel that can bark loud when strangers approach!

On Rose Chan,Just did a google search, wikipedia, and youtube. I am most surprised that even the journalist(s) who did so many articles on Rose Chan did not mention this secret. Obviously they were as ignorant as I was.

Listened to the lyrics and ya, you are right, his message was so precised and clear. His last sentanece “Flower of Malaya I cannot stay” said it all.

    A great thank you, Monsterball!

Jsutin and mosnterball, my youtube friend, Gordon Murray, whom I also correspond with, played his own arrangement of this song… He is a Canadian, you can see how famous is this song..

I do not know the origin, maybe monsterball is correct since he knows Rose Chan. But this song becomes so famous that it was featured in movies too.

you can view Gordon Murray’s version on my Chinese blog:

Justin , a third force may not necessarily split the opposition votes. With its meagre 2 MPs, it can also strengthen the opposition, if Pakatan can remain together over time.

As a third force, it could play check and balance better ,too. With 2 sides equally strong, this third orce would be able to dictate its ideology , which is to create a fair and equitable society along a social democratic line.It can tilt the balance towards the side which is providing a good people centric policies, as well as providing good governance. (like the liberal party of UK as wellas a small party In West Geramany). In other words, by supporting whichever side that is good for the people, it would force both sides to change and govern along its line.

As a socialist movement, it would create people centric policies. I see it has a role to play.

Another practical point is that it would be too difficult to sell to the leadership to move so drastically to join Pakatan. To move them out of BN will be the first step and the resistance would not be as great as moving straight into Pakatan. As the third force, with UMNO rotten, it could have unified those in the middle ground, like the Gerakan of the late sixties (with socialists, trade unionists, workers, and intellectuals joining hands together to win Penang). It could still support Pakatan and at the same time serve as a check against the extremist policies of PAS, and perhaps the perceived racial inclinction of the DAP.

That is how I see it.

Justine…I wish Doc could sing along while his friend played the melody.. ..so nice…on the piano.
Yes……this is the one and only song…made world famous….on “malaya”…dedicated to Rose Chan.
Not only that…it is this song…that actually caught the attention of many international people..asking themselves…’where the heck is malaya?” ….and as Frankie Laine was world famous singer ..at that time. …so many ..thousands…came and found out lovely Penang.
Like I said….expect UMNO to give you the real truth..dream on..especially if the real truth involve a Chinese… contributing to what is Malaysia….today.
Chin Peng is the classic example. He saved so many Malaysians of all races….fighting against the Japanese and especially ..Malay girls…being raped by the ever sex crazy Japanese soldiers.
I really hope one day…an old Malay lady….now very famous…can come out and tell her …how she was saved by Chin Peng…but that is also an impossible dream…like what we now know about Rose Chan. Like I said….if Micheal Yeoh and P.
Ramli can be decorated…Rose Chan deserves it too.
Concerning Penang…..leave that to Penangites. The are no fools!! It would have gone to DAP under the last election of Mahathir…and that would have been worst for UMNO and BN…had DAP did not co-operate with PAS.
Those were the days….majority voters of all races….hated Mahathir…especially the Malays.
Yes….Malaysians all gave Dollah his first chance….for his first term…and the 12th election….Penang was ready for the chance…especially now with keDAILan.
Penang will stay with DAP…..as Penangites…by nature..are real smart votes…and they all live like true Malaysians.
Penang people love to talk politics and history….and they know UMNO…and BN far more better many Malaysians…from different States.
    So….whatever formulas…ideas and suggestions…just leave all that aside…and focus knowing …Penang people.
    Do you know their characters?

Now you know the truth….a very important one..and Malaysians love music..don’t we?
Rose Chan deserves t be recognized.
Frankie Laine was no ordinary singer….and Doc is right…so many movies uses that song too.
Doc…sing the last verse….’FLOWER OF MALAYA….I CANNOT STAY”
Here is the full song for all to know…….

    Rose Rose I love You
    ++++++++
1 ” Rose Rose I love you…. with an aching heart.
2.What is your future …now we have to part
3 Standing on the jetty… as the steamer moves away
4 Flower of Malaya…. I can not stay
5 Make make or make way… for me Eastern Rose
6 Men crowd in dozens…everywhere she goes
7 In her rickshaw …on the street.. or in the cabaret
8 Please make way for Rose… you can hear them say
9 All my life…I ..shall remember
10 Oriental music and you in my arms
11 Perfumed flowers in your traces
12 Lotus scented breezes and swaying palms
13 Rose Rose I love you …with your almond eyes
14 Fragrant and slender neath tropical skies
15 I must cross the seas again… and never see you more
16 Way back to my home.. on a distant shore
REPEAT….9/10/11/12….then…17 ” Rose Rose I leave you… my ship is in the bay
18 Kiss me farewell now …there’s nothing to say
19 East is east and west is west …our worlds are far apart
20 I must leave you now …but I leave my heart.
    REPEAT….1/2/3/4.
Hope all Penangites learn this song and be proud if Rose Chan.
This song is also about Penang!!!

Gordon Murray is very good at the keyboard! Fantastic. I can’t resist posting it in my blog, with monsterball’s revelation of Rose Chan. Infact during Rose Chan’s final days, I also responded to her appeal for donation towards her treatment. What a tragedy!

Her fame stretched to at least 2 generations. I often heard my father and his friends talked about Rose Chan. And for me, I got to witness her performance for free in the 70’s when I was with Hotel Central at Penang Road. At that time Hotel Central together with Penang Hill Hotel were controlled by Loy Hean Heong who later became famous under MBf group.

How about my suggestion Doc, to return to home ground and lead us towards prosperity?!!

Yes another thing, talking about cover-up of great events if it involved other races; remember the archaelogical site discovered by one Malay researcher somewhere in Johore? Yes Justine…Rose Chan died a pauper…all alone.

I am so glad we Chinese are broad minded to speak up.
One of Rose Chan’s husband for 5 years was a Malay..name Rashid.
Her downfall was…she can never give up show business. She could set up a team and manage it profitably…..but she always wanted to be in the limelight. She actually forced her daughter to do striptease shows….and she turned to snake strip teasing….became a total failure.
She was head over heels over a very handsome brave police inspector….who is married. He was a gang buster from Penang!! I won’t reveal the name…except Volvo car number is 888 bought by Rose for him. I was having 777….and still keep this number plate for past…38 years …for all the good and bad memories…..hahahahaha

But if UMNO is making a cover up…you bet….it is most likely. …an Indian or Thais….dating back..long before the Sultans were here.
The Sultans are actually groups of warriors..gangsters……running away…fighting each other…coming from neighbouring countries….won and set up their so call States.
    How long ago…500 years?
Maybe an expert on this…can tell us more. It’s the year of the Sultans that I am interested to know.

pathetic response from the ex-CM and as expected, the spineless fella push the blame on Guan Eng. its clear as daylight the federal govt was punishing the Penangnites for kicking out BN. Both projects are to improve transportation system which is in line with the govt’s objective. Is this not people-centric? or PM and DPM are saying that penangnites are not people.
let me hypothesise. if there is no China factor in the second link, this will also be scrap as a punishment.
Guan Eng and gang. Its clear now that you will be sidelined by the federal govt. Put on your thinking caps and improvise as there will be no assitance from the central government. And act now to defend the state rights.
As far as I am concern, I wont touch BN with a ten foot pole after seeing their vindictive politics. They have not changed and dont know how to respect the voters’ rights. And they never will. As long as UMNO is in charge, I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR BN AGAIN.

As for returning to home ground, I still consider myself a Penangite despite staying in PJ for more than 25 years. I wish Gerakan can go back to home ground, the same party that comprised of great intellectual like Alatas, socialist like Tan Chee Khoon, tradeunionist like V David and of course our great Tun Lim CHong Eu. Tun Lim won the Penang gevernment in 1969 with only 300 hardcore UDP supporters… People who worked without asking for any return. I joined this party partly because of my Penang upbringing. Those who had gone thru May 13 in Penang would always have a fondness for Gerakan and its non sectarian ideology…. BUt no full time politics for me…. only hope that I can be in the party to lend support to someone who can go back to home ground.
And when that hope dies, I will quit politics…

It is tough dealing with the expenditure side of government that shelved many projects in
Penang. Efficiency is the key and that in part means cutting public wastages, plugging leakages, cutting corruption dan downsizing massive bureaucracies. We need political will which the Government have taken.

We must move forward with or without Gerakan coming back to power in Penang. We really to care about the rakyat concern, evaluate capable leaders and

RPK accused Najib’s wife….murderer of Monoglian lady….then……Judge Ian Chin said Mahathir is worst than a devil ….now someone admitiing he has been sodomized by Anwar.
You think Doc….do not know all these sensational news?
I guess…Doc wants to ignore most of them…..as if you sit and look at the bigger picture….what they created are lots and lots of comments……from fun seeking commentators.
Malaysians love alot of sensational news………but forgot one important thing…….no one is suing no one!!
Arn’t we all behaving like suckers?
If we all keep quiet…..let those hypocrites talk and talk…and they will.. feel the shame.
But hey succeeded in getting everyone entertained and get emotional.
If we keep getting angry ..for this or that…they have infact succeeded in diverting our attentions to the most important issue….Najib’s wife is accused as a murderer.
Now……I wait Anwar stop defending……but start suing that person……to protect his good name…like Lee Kuan Yew.
If he takes action….than he is proving…he values his good reputation….since now…he has lot of supporters and his party is controlling 5 States….entirely different from before..he was accused ..same charges.
If he dare not take serious legal actions……he is proving…he is no better than Mahathir too.
And those component parties in Pakatan Raya should insist Anwar do that too.
As for me….just relax.and observe those hypocrites make a fool of themselves…….for the whole world ….. laughing… at them.
They feel nothing…as they are so used to this type of life.. for 50 years….wanting everyone to call them TanSri….or Tun…worthless piece of titles..they created.. for themselves…..to feel ten feet talk. Dear Justin,

I still stand my believe that a 3rd alternative could actually be viable. Yes it may split the votes but that could work both ways too.

My argument for a 3rd alternative is based on the believe that the 2 options available to us are both at the opposite ends of the political spectrum.

BN (UMNO) and its corruption on the one end and PR (DAP) with its ‘catching thieves’ mentality on the other hand.

A 3rd softer approach that sits in the middle of the spectrum may just appeal to the many of the silent majority.

A group of parties that is corruption free and willing to embrace all who are prepared to work for a better Malaysia irrespective of previous political associations.

I base this believe on my own experience. Because of my previous support for BN and my association with Gerakan, I am looked upon with mistrust and disdain by the present DAP administrators of Penang.

Despite my willingness to work with them for a better Penang and Malaysia, I’m constantly reminded that I used to ‘sleep with the enemy’.

So the idea of the 3rd alternative is to appeal and cater to those like me who would like to contribute to society but are unable to do so because of our past associations.

Like Doc said, offer the 3rd alternative now and let the other 2 options sort out whatever is preventing them from being good alternatives and then decide later whether to continue offering the 3rd alternative or join with either one of the two.

Basically buy time until some semblance of permanence is shown by these 2 alternatives. The situation is still too fluid to make a long-term call.

IMO 100 days is not enough to judge the PR and also I would like to see what kind of UMNO emerges after the December elections.

    Dr Hsu,

I’m sorry I can’t shed any light on the archaeological excavation in Johor but I do remember reading about it. If my memory is correct, its about finding an Indian related settlement which predates the Malay Sultanates of the 15th century.

This is what I found on Wikipedia on the Malay race.

The Malay people are believed to have originated in Borneo and then expanded outwards into Sumatra and later into the Malay Peninsula. These people were descendants of Austronesian-speakers who migrated from the Philippines and originally from Taiwan. The main foundation of this school of thought lies in the fact that the oldest Malay settlements have been discovered in Sumatra and not in the Malay Peninsula. This suggests an upward – south to north – migratory route. Malay culture reached its golden age during Srivijayan times. Malays practiced Buddhism, Hinduism, and their native Animism before converting to Islam in the 15th century.

With regards to the question of the earliest Malay Sultanates, this is what I found.

Parameswara founded Malacca around 1400. He was a Buddhist Srivijayan prince and Sejarah Melayu mentioned that he laid claims of being descended from the Macedonian King Alexander the Great / Iskandar Zulkarnain. When Parameswara became the ruler of Palembang, the Srivijaya Empire was already in decline. In 1390s, Majapahit sent thousands of ships to attack Palembang. Parameswara had fled his palace and eventually reached Temasek island (Singapore) which was headed by a Srivijayan descendent. However, Temasek had been a vassal of Majapahit since 1365. After several days, Parameswara was betrayed by his relative and he had to kill him. Parameswara then ruled Temasek for about 4 years, where he was finally attacked by the Majapahit armies when one of the ministers opened the gates for Majapahit armies to attack the palace. Parameswara fled north to Muar before founding Melaka in 1400. In 1409, Parameswara assumed the title Sultan Iskandar Shah due to his marriage to a princess from Pasai. His marriage to the Muslim princess encouraged a number of his subjects to embrace Islam. According to the Sejarah Melayu, legend has it that the king saw a mouse deer outwit a dog when he was resting under the Melaka tree. He took what he saw as a good omen and decided to establish a capital for his kingdom there. Today, the mouse deer is part of modern Malacca’s coat of arms.

Getting a totally corrupt free group of politicians ..is asking too much…just an impossible nice dream.
You see….there is no such thing as a corrupt free country or ruling party…not even in Singapore or USA….or anywhere in the world.
It is the LEVEL of corruptions. …whether is it.. hurting the citizens….to the extreme….milking the country’s wealth…..high and dry..by their corrupt acts. When one holds the power with so much temptations….so many opportunities to be financially secured for life…and chances of being proven a non corrupted politician…advised by experts lawyers…becoming ..totally safe to steal…..one cannot help feeling…the chances are for their takings….and MONEY…is power too..as long as you are alive.
It is in Malaysia…..UMNO is so greedy…so much to take….for party …for family and for friends……never enough….even though ..they cannot spend them all in their living. In USA..all politicians need to raise their own funds.to stand for election. Jeff Ooi is the first in Malaysian. But UMNO….keep stealing…and with the art to keep denying….that Malaysians are saying….enough is enough. We are no fools.
No….there is no such thing..as corrupt fee party…or country.
But ..having a small group…to call the shots against UMNO and People’s Party?? ……sure…very good idea and formula…..but are we that smart….right now?
You see….it just recently took off to make Malaysia more balanced with UMNO less powerful..making Malaysia more transparent and democratic…automatically. Mind you…it took 50 years and UMNO is still hanging toward their slim power with what we are seeing right now..so much nonsense….no work at all. ……just keep talking find ways ad means….making PP difficult to manage a State..by canceling projects…held by oppositions. NO!!…UMNO must be voted out…to give Pakatan Raya..a chance to rule….with vast majority voters…..supporting them…to bravely try an alternative. Why must …an idea…taught out…right now…to somewhat save UMNO and BN?
And now…it is the life of Anwar …that matters…..that is…if the threats of killing him being….is real.
I will avoid being worked up by recent events…and wait for the outcome..especially on the RPK’s accusations and Anwar’s 16th September take over the government.
Meanwhile…talking about Rose Chan is better than politics. At least….that brings back sweet memories to an old man …like me….and I suggest other younger ..Malaysians…start thinking and talking about sweet memories of their own….and leave the present politics…which have reached the extreme….to settle them up….by themselves…and we all do need the,,, loving and kind hearted God….to protect the innocent bystanders…….not dragged to any misfortunes..out of sick sick political situations .of our country.
And the finding in Johore…I think..the government found out..the Indians were first cultured people here in Malaysia.
But Indians also having same characteristics as the Chinese. They don’t know how to conquers countries…..but are brave and experts… to defend their own countries and rights.

Romez , thanks for the historical sharing . To add one , there’re historians claim that Parameswara never converted during his life span . Probably his son did .
You are right that Malay race is also a immigrant here historically (but they say chinese/indians are ‘pendatang’) .

Justin and monsterball, no i am not sleeping. On the contrary, I stayed up last night to watch the euro cup final and cheered for Spain.

Was quite busy doing on Saturday, and yesterday. Also felt a bit upset over the turn of events in Malaysia.

But I had time to read some of the blogs. Today, until now, was so busy that only now i have time to come to the blog.

Yip Doc……you are right…”turkish delight” is a lousy taste ice cream……hahahahahaha
And I also stayed from 3am… ….watching the football game and was delighted Spain won…no sleep….bathe and went to work at 8.30am…till 1pm…came back…browsed the blogs…and slept for two hours…went to Summit…bought a dozen new pair of
“Durban”trousers….on 70% sales discount….belly grew 2 more inches….perhaps eating too much late huge dinner at 26 hours Indian shops.
But at my sightly more than 5’5” height….weighing 155 lbs…okay la.
    My father…..same height…was 180 lbs!!
One cannot believe…just 10 years ago….my weight never more than 103lb.
All my friends long lost friends..could not recognize me…if I don’t greet them first.
Doc…another “turkish delight” is in a form of a special massage!! Ask for that..you will be in great trouble!!

Have anyone been to a festive dinner hosted by your American friend ..in USA?
They serve roasted turkey. I cannot remember was it Christmas or New Years Day.
I cannot swallow the tasteless turkey at all…and I like to eat with the bones around the meat.
Poop..can huge piece of pure meat..always turns me off.
    I love “bak.kut tei”….and must have pork’s leg or ribs..always.

then those American came to K.Lumpur…ordered long pork ribs…roasted with tasteful Chinese….sauces. Those guys…want more and more.
Brought them to chicken rice…even simple soup…they wallop them all..saying wonderful taste.
Then..to few courses real good chinese dinner….all came back for more and more…..also demanding “turkish delights” massages.
End results…all my goods.no more opening Letter Of Credits. No more limits to my orders and some discounts given…without asking for it.
The say…they want to make sure I succeed.giving them reasons to visit Malaysia ….again and again.
After few years…they find new friends…better than you…and just drop you out…with n9o regrets. Doing businesses with American….don’t think of long term.

Original owner of Malaya penisular is orang asli not Malay like kahdazan, iban, etc… unfortunately most of their land are conquered and many were killed by invaders from Indo sumatra archepilago, so history can also be changed by whoever in power in Malaysia to justify their presence in occupied land, it is a lesson similar with altered Japanese history book version of second world war by Japanese government.

With or without PORR or Monorail, life moves on. Think of alternative. Going green is the answer.
Why not have your own alternatives? Don’t have to depend on Federal Government.
