The winner is — Malaysians

I am no judge, so I won’t say who is the winner in last night’s debate between Anwar and Shabery.

But one thing I am sure. Whoever won and lost, the ultimate winner is the Malaysians.

This is the right way forward for the nation. Government leaders must be ready to face anyone willing to come forward to query and debate government policies. By having this sort of debate, the people of Malaysia get to listen to the other side of the story too… which is great for stimualting the minds. By listening to different views, the minds of leaders on both side of the divide can actually be stimulated and new ideas may come out. The Prime Minister must be commended for letting this sort of debate take place… the country will be more open with this.

The West is what it is today because of the divergence of ideas, and the freedom to express such ideas are guaranteed in most western countries. With divergence of ideas comes coalescence of such ideas into new thinking which has propelled the nations of the west forward, ever since the The Renaissance.

Our country , if it really aspires to be a first world nation by 2020, must be prepared to be more open and let dissenting views not only be heard, but heard over the so-called official channels, in the government controlled press as well as radio and TV stations.

I hope this debate will open up a trend for future debates to be held, in normal times as well as during General Elections.

I agree, and also think that the Prime Minister deserves alot more credit than people give him for. It’s really by his grace that we can get the alternative side of the story now on the legion of blogs we have now. There was no winner nor loser last night, the point was not that either, it’s to provide both sides of the divide a good, mature and civil platforms to speak their minds and let the people decide on the merits of their respective proposals / version of the answer.

    Clear as crystal….Anwar won!
The moment Anwar spoke….50 sen reduction on oil price….cutting cost and trim down certain projects ….to save RM5 billion needed..and not use Petronas money…Shabrey was caught off guard…spending most of the time.. insulting Anwar and promoted UMNO past and present leaders….and very little to the point of a question..put to him.
Worst of all….the so call…a professor..and holding high post in University…was talking nonsense.
    He was Shabrey’s seconder.
He put out a question to …..Shabery…that should be for Anwar. He does not know..what he was talking about.
I wholeheartedly agree….this is the beginning of better democracy…and Dollah should be complimented.
Yes….lets hope more and more such debates on important issues…..are organised….in the future.

Open debate between knowledgeable candidates is good in stimulating our mind to analyse, think and differentiate the pro n con of a decision, it should be encouraged not suppressed by government, after all, society can only advance intellectually when the people has no fear of ”freedon of expression, opinion or idea”. Government can really do a lot in making the country advance.

I would think that the PM agreed to the debate because of a hidden agenda to character assassinate Anwar.
Shabery embarked on the debate with confidence declaring that if he failed in his mission he will resign.
Why the confidence? His mission is probably to attack Anwar on a personal basis. And that’s the BN agenda.
Well, he accomplished his mission but it also back-fired.
BN’s ugly side is revealed and they also lost a good opportunity to defend the fuel hike decision. BN mess up again big time.

    Read all at Malaysiakini.
According to hearsay…he was arrested under ISA.
A group of NGOs and supporters are assembling at Pudu Jail.
Lets hope he is not arrested under ISA.

He is charged under sodomy and not ISA…..but may not be released..until few tests are conducted.
Road are blocked…leading to the police station…and hundreds are standing peacefully along the road sides. They expect to be there whole nights..as they expect Anwar will not be release…that soon.
    Why….use your imaginations!!
Most will go hungry…with no food and request mineral water only.
My driver is on a stand by…to drive me there by 8.30pm…with cartoons of water. How to get them to those thirsty supporters of Anwar….I will figure it out…when we are near there. My target time….is 8.30pm. If he is not released by then..I will do my part…getting mineral water to my thirsty friends.

    Fear factor..not working!
Provocations is the name of the game …now.
Malaysians should all remember…Mahatma Gandhi words…’an eye for an eye…makes the whole world blind”
Therefore…supporters of Anwar should stay calm….love those who try to harm you ..with a smile.
    It will do wonders!
But always be brave and ready to die for your country.
Right now…waiting till 8pm…final news from my friend….whether to deliver mineral water or not.

By the way, this Shaberry Cheek is another chameleon and satisfied with his showmanship including taking cheap shots against Anwar. We should remember Shaberry was the lieutenant to Ku Li during the days of Semangat 46.

He was also together with me on the US government sponsored International Visitors’ programme in the mid-1990s whereby he was condemning and being critical of the BN government: in his speeches to the American public, government officials and academicians during the study tour on the Role of the Congress.

Now that he has earned his keeps, he can afford to speak with a forked tongue, craving and burning with a political ambition to vie for a higher post in UMNO. Having spent a month with him on the USA tour, having long chats with him as we had to share hotel room together in certain states, I can vouched for his hypocrisy.

Yes, Shaberry can taken cheap shots now but a pot calling a kettle black is not a noble statesman of which he is not qualified to be one in a million years.

“Fuel Subsidy”-the term used by umno-BN is fundamentallly flaw. How can our oil resources ‘s revenue can be used to subsidy Malaysians? They do not belong to umnoputra or petronas, the resources are Malaysia’s own. It’s just one of many myths from umno-BN years of deceptive governance.

Malaysia will be the winner if government willing to allow differing views and most logical reason to prevail in its policy making process, allow freedom of opinion and views without intimidation n fear of arrest from Malaysians, by then, only we all will be the winners.

I saw the debate live with my wife on Astro 119. Came with an open mind as Malaysians are not used to watching such a high drama debate. By the end of it, it was clear who the winner was even though NST said there was no clear winner. talk to the man on the street and everyone said Anwar was witty, clever and smart. He showed his intelligence on his feet, compassionate and was able to cut through a difficult topic with ease, assuring the Rakyat that the 50 cents was just the beginning of better things for the Nation. Plugging the loopholes caused by wastage and corruption was whct the new PR will embarked on. He touched on the savings of 2 Bn by reducing the over-capacity of TNB to 20% vis-a-vis IPP’s which was truly ingeneous. Way to go Anwar!!! The wakil for Shabery was a total disgrace and an intellectual fraud. I can’t understand how Shabery can hand-pick such a useless fella out of so many citizens. Shows you what depth UMNO has fallen, surrounding themselves with so many yes-men. That Shabery took opportunities to heap praise on all the past and present leaders even though this was not the forum to do so. It makes me cringe.. Yuk! Anyway, I hope there will be more debates involving Cabinet Ministers. And my last word, Anwar’s suit does not fit him, maybe it was an old one from the pre-Mahathir days when he was living it up and now after spending so many years in jail, his body has shrunk.

As expected, the supporters of PKR claimed victory for Anwar and BN loyalists claimed victory for the Minister. Everyone had made up their mind who was the winner before the debate started and all coloured by his or her political belief. But the debate is a step in the right direction.

The result is nobody win or the two of them are win. So, biarkanlah ianya tiada pemenang. Kalau ada pemenang mesti huru hara jadinya. Yang penyokong Anwar dah tentulah akan adakan perhimpunan besar-besaran untujk tunjuk perasaan..

Jeff…Few UMNO guys are saying…if you cannot read and write Bahasa…you are not a true and loyal Malaysian.
    But they don’t realise…their fathers…grandfathers and…hundreds of Datuks… of their own race…cannot read and write….Bahasa…better than other race…right now.
I go to the kampongs..the little I can read is far more better than most of their cousins..as I speak well Bahasa…ordinary simple words…everyone understands me.
When Merdeka was declared…..all those who obtained blue IC cards…are all Malaysians.
There is no GOLD IC cards to all malays….to show…they are first class citizens. All are the same..and equal.
It is the dirty race and religion UMNO politics…taking advantage of all Malaysians ….agreeing to help the malays.to be at par with the Chinese. UMNO took advantage and keep poisoning the Malay minds..we are second class.
    I feel so embarrassed…to own so many properties…making me a Bumiputra…legally…hahahahahaha
And now…why did that guy .wrote in Bahasa? I guess he knows monsterball will f..k him….if he wrote….all in English…promoting UMNO…and BN.
Almost all UMNO supporters .try to sneak in a message….or two…like so..run away…with their monyet tail…curled in…like a real coward.
Not one dare to stay long and battle it out…like Anwar with Shabrey.
    In this case….all of them…against monsterball….including Najib and Dollah…..hahahahahaha

Of course we all are the winners, see how much more we have to pay for our food , water, electricity, fuel cost, and other living expenses. With open debate like this without any conclusive steps taken by government to reduce our suffering is meaningless, is there really a “winner” after all ? both candidates probably are a lot richer before n after this, majority of Malaysians are still living at the edges of poverty daily.

Malaysian blogger s and the media will each have their own version of who is the winner in this debate, but at the end of the day, is that really matter who is the winner? So long as a convincing and a better solution is not adopted by government to alleviate our pain n suffering in this rising inflation environment, we the people still remain as losers and both candidates are not any worst off than many of us already are especially those who are third class citizens in Malaysia.
