A message to Permatang Pauh voters

Tomorrow is the D Day for The mother of all by elections , the Permatang Pauh Parlaimentary seat contest.

I hope that all parties should follow the rules, be fair and impartial to all the voters. I also hope that there would be no vote buying – not even giving ang pow to old people, like a lady minister is reported to be doing.

Most important of all, the voters of Permatang Pauh must come out in full force to vote. Employers must allow time off for their employees to votes. Those self employed should think of the big picture and take time off from their businesses to vote. Their votes will determine whether Malaysia will go back to its old way, or towards a better future for our children.

Voting is their constitutional right. It is up to voters to choose whoever they think can represent them effectively in Parliament. Every vote is important.

The March 8 election has given many Malaysians a glimmer of hope that perhaps the dawning of a 2 party system will bring about positive changes – better governance, lesser abuses and corruption, lesser emphasis on racial politics.

I will quote from my article ” a square peg in a round hole- gerakan and Permatang Pauh” :

in the eyes of many Malaysians, the fight in Permatang Pauh is no longer about Anwar and Umno. It is no longer about Anwar the person, but about what he represents: A hope that finally raced-based policies can be done away with; a hope that there would be a better check and balance, the lack of which has been the main reasons why corruption and abuses have become so rampant; a hope that society would become more open, racial polarisation would be less and there would be more accountability and transparency.

It has become the fight for the survival of the still fragile two-party system. Many in civil society believe that everything must be done to nurture it so it will grow stronger and can play the role of an effective watchdog and be a counterbalance to the BN.

Anwar may not be able to deliver all these. But at least he gives us hope that he could help bring about  these changes. For those of you who wish to pursue this hope and nurture the budding 2 party system, you have no choice but to vote for Anwar. For those who want status quo, who think that abuses and corruption and manipulations are acceptable, please continue to vote BN. The choice is yours. THE CHOICE IS CLEAR.

Let democracy prevail. For those of us outside the area, let u hope that our brothers and sisters in Permatang Pauh will make the right choice and send the right person to Parliament.

 …………………………………………………………………….

A reader, Fadzli Sharip,  has so kindly translated the article. I will post the translation here to reach more voters:  (Thank you Fadzli)

(It’s a good comment. Let me loosely translate it to Malay for better reach. Sorry if any content is lost. Fadzli)

Kuasa ditangan anda. PILIHAN DISINI JELAS.

you do realize that Malaysia is a third world country, right?

I mean, come on, Malaysia, at least their politicians, have been breaking limits on stupidity, I’m not sure Anwar could win the elections by a large margin.

If he claims victory though, the BN propaganda machine will be proven to be useless, and they would have to find other ways to serve the rakyat.

I was there last night, at Kg. Padang Ibu, Penanti. The venue was overflowing with people. I was lucky however, I got to greet DSAI and wished him all the best in this epic journey to bring justice and freedom to the rakyat.

Even after a very long day for DSAI, he was still very much in his element.

The air was filled with much hope, that the winds of change will bring a new dawn to our beloved Malaysia.

Definitely, this is the moment, it is history in the making.

Politicians can never be trusted. There is a saying that “given the chance, politicians will sell away their own mother”. After GE12, I am witnessing a new breed, mostly young and mostly from the DAP (Jeff Ooi, Tony Pua, Gobind, Teresa, Nie Ching) and PKR (Azmin, Devaraj, Sivarasa). They have rekindled a new hope and I am prepared to give them a chance. In DSAI, I see a man with a good Vision and a timely Mission. I am prepared to trust him with my vote, anytime and anyday. I don’t think I am alone. I sense a deluge and flood of voters from all communities aligning their hopes and dreams for a better Malaysia. The people of PP are no different. I expect DSAI to win with a majority exceeding 30k.

in your own words, gerakan must leave BN if it is to adhere to the founders’ ideology and vision. if it stays, it is condoning racism and corruption. whats the future for Gerakan if it leaves BN? Not too bright. I guess. If it stays put, surely the party will decay to be another mosquito party like PPP. Guess, Hobson’s choice, no?

yh, yes. If it remains inside BN, it will just fade away like PPP. And in the next round, it will be rejected and annihilated .

If it goes outside , it is also diificult for the party to regain its past glory, let us be frank. But at least by doing so, it can help stregthen those opposed to race politics and corrupt practices annd be truthful to its ideology and conscience.

I have been asking the party to move out in 2006 so that we could have won big in the last election, sensing that the mood of the people had changed..

But then our voice are ignored… The leaders were so caught up with being ministers, MPs and Aduns and so no one chose to believe that the political grounds have swifted and that people’s sentiments are against BN, especailly in urban and suburban areas, where Gerakan’s seats are situated.

What is past is past and we cannot undo the wrong choices that the leaders have taken. The leaders have only themselves to be blamed for leading the party to this stage.

The situation now, as you have rightly said, is a Hobson’s choice.

But look at it from another angle. I have stressed many times in this blog that individuals are not important; parties are not important. What is important is what we have all along fought for, a fair and equal society, where race is not so much emphasised, where people are not so much divided by design, and where good govnernace prevails.

If some other parties can achieve this for us, then why should be still harping on the survuival of the party? As Dr Toh rightly points out, we must put people’s interest above self and party.

By remaining in BN, we are in fact a hindrance to what we are fighting for, a real irony in fact.

Besides, by going out of BN, as I see it, we can at least survive as a small party, and we can slowly build up from there.

Dr Koh should ask himself what is it that make him join politics? Is it for the people? or is it for self only? I believe he is still one of the leaders with an inner conscience, even though the same may not be applied to many of those leaders around him.

Individuals come and go, and are not that important. Whether he will go down in history as the one leading Gerakan to annihilation should not be too much of a concern. If he is really for the people, I believe history will treat him kindly.

I am pretty optimistic and confident that DSAI will most definitely win with a landslide majority tomorrow. However, my sympathies are with him in the ensuing battle against the ‘powers-that-be’ who will go to the extreme to prevent him from gaining the necessary power to oust the current ‘power-holders’. But DSAI is both a born fighter and survivor. May he become the new Prime Minister of Malaysia come September 16, 2008. “Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! REFORMASI!”

After by-election, he would have forgotten that he has travelled on LRT/KTM etc…. End result, back to square one, forgotten and no action taken.
Now another amazing thing has happend to these BN guys, ‘”swearing”. Seems that everyone gone into this fever. We have Sai the FOOL, DPM and now former MB of Perak is swearing. They even challenged people to swear. Lickily DSAIO has refused to do this. This type of swearing makes a mockery of oneself. Only REAL DESPERATE people do this.
BN blokes are really desperate that they make a clown of themselves by doing this.
There are laws to be followed. If everyone swears to claim innocent, then why need laws la.

    Dr Hsu,

I just returned from Bukit Mertajam after visiting monsterball with Justin. (I’ll leave that for another day)

Instead I would like to comment on the polis presence there. They are everywhere! And we were not even in Permatang Pauh.

We were only on the road on the edge of Permatang Pauh leading to BM. Every road junction had traffic polis and the field force type with machine guns.

Even in BM, sitting in the Summit Hotel lounge watching the traffic, a polis land rover or lorry would pass by every few minutes with helicopters swooping by once in a while. (we were there from 3.15pm to 6.00pm)

If this is not intimidation, I do not know what is. Everyone was just going about their business so why the heavy polis presence? needless to say there were long lines of cars clogging up the roads.

Permatang Pauh must look more like a polis state or war zone rather than a constituency in a democracy!

One more thing. The reports I’ve been reading of empty BN booths are true. We came across many booths decked out with flags and banners but with no one about.

On the other hand, the PKR booths had people around and talking and mingling about.

Also I encountered more cars flying PKR flags than BN flags. In fact I hardly saw any BN flags on cars.

If all these translates to votes tomorrow, Anwar will be MP for P44 on 27 August 2008.

I agree with cilipadi here that in a way, we ‘trust no one’ in this world. Infact, we humans are the ones whose minds are the most polluted compare to the environment that we polluted.

But, we really need to learn to put our trusts on something first, then to see whether we can still continue placing our trusts on this something. We Malaysians were once placed our trusts on Umno and BN and we can see how this turns out to. Just ask ourselves honestly, can we still place our trusts on them? So, if your answer is no, then why no put our trusts on Pakatan Rakyat and Anwar this time around? Afterall, we got nothing to lose, right?

Today is D-Day in PP. I’m so glad it will finally be over, soon. For, like so many, I’m sick and tired of the way politicians (especially those from BN) go about campaigning the past week or so. They things said and done are just plain sickening. We see money being distributed and words said that went along with it. Videos of the alleged sodomy victim came on air. As if his swearing on the Holy Book was not bad enough, we also witnessed the DPM swearing by the Holy Book. It does not matter whether this act of swearing is justified or appropriate by the rules of the faith. Common sense tells us that one does not need to resort to do this by the Holy Book of whatever faith. It is nothing more than mockery before the public and the world community. But there was no shame on their part when majority of the rakyat try to hide the embarrasment and shame of such acts. We hear all kinds of accusations hurled across the other side. But nothing is said about the national issues that confront the rakyat. Maybe (just maybe) they think majority, if not all, of the voters in PP are senile or stupid to decide on their votes based on such juvenile words and deeds. How wrong! This category seems to be the minority although it may be the norm coming from BN. I’m sad to say that such are my observations. As an ardent BN supporter all my life, I’ve truly become disillusioned. Not just of late before Mar8, but for years since 2005. And I don’t need to elaborate what makes me abandon my support for BN. I thought Mar8 would have taught BN a thing or two. But again BN has let me down. Deeds and words have since gotten worse, not any better from the lesson learnt. For they have not really learnt their lesson. Self denial and arrogance have got into their blood. No I would say this has become the BN culture. Without taking the right course of remedial actions do I think there is any way out? Certainly not. There’s only one, and only one, way that BN can go. Soon to become history.

Few months back…so many bloggers were scolding him for something….he posted..which I cannot be bothered to know why….but a steam of bloggers and commentators were after him.
That was not the first time..he got such response..whenever he put out a smart two-timer type of message.
    Yes….he is a two timer……cannot be trusted.
    kitemoc….thinks too highly of himself.
Doc is a gentleman….to agree and disagree with him.
By putting putting a post in his blog on Doc’s message….and make his disagreeing comments there….shows what a friend he can be.
Why can’t to put it here…and do his comments here?
Why must be in his blog…on something Doc wrote…..to disagree wit Doc there?
He once call be…”a son……listen to daddy”.
    This young fut…have no manners.
No bloggers like or respect him…except Susan Loone and ever gentlemanly friendly ..Doc.

Doc….Thanks for waking me upon a much needed sleep for such great news on Anwar winning the election.
No need for me to influence others.
All have their smart minds to back Anwar up.
