Permatang Pauh vote counting

Anwar Wins. The permatang Pauh voters have spoken on behalf of the people of Malaysia. This is another clear message to BN. They cannot carry on their old ways. They have to change or face changes sweeping them away.

Anwar has obtained a bigger majority at 15671 with a turnout rate of  81%. BN has failed to lower the majority despite choosing the voting date on a weekday.  Umno must take note and so must all the component parties including MCA, MIC and Gerakan. They are fast becoming irrelevant, if they still choose to go against the wish of the majority in Peninsular Malaysia.

From Malaysiakini:

9.50pm: Official EC tally – Anwar got 31,195 votes, Arif Shah, 15,524, Hanafi, 92. Anwar won with a majority of 15,671.

9.12pm: Official EC result: With 11 more boxes to go, Anwar has won the by-election with a 14,551 majority. He garnered 27,977 votes while BN’s Arif Shah obtained 13,426 while Akim’s Hanafi Hamat got 85.

8pm: Unofficial: Anwar is the winner, obtaining a majority of 16,210. He garnered in 26,646 while Arif Omar 10,436 votes.

??   Unofficial PKR alert – Anwar wins with a majority of 17,652, obtaining 31,949 votes. BN’s Arif Shah garnered 14,297 while Akim’s Hanafi Hamat got 74. Hanafi to lose his RM15,000 deposit.

(Editor: This Malaysiakini figure cannot be right. Because the total votes exceed 65% turnout. Someone please clarify).

7.59pm: Unofficial latest count, Anwar has obtained 16,101 votes as opposed to Arif Shah’s 6,071.

7.43pm The EC starts to announce official results as per the ballot boxes it has counted. As it stands, Anwar is leading by 3,507 votes (or 48.11 percent).

The breakdown is as follows: Akim’s Hanafi Hamat (nine votes), Anwar (5,398 votes) and Arif Shah (1,891).

So far 20 ballot boxes of a total of 111 have been opened and counted. Anwar had won in ALL these 20 boxes. In one particular box, he had obtained 441 votes compared to Arif’s 14.

7.25pm: There are signs of significant swing to PKR despite the lower turnout. In the state constituency of Penanti, which PKR won at the March 8 general elections, the party has bagged the sole polling station, Telok Wang, it failed to win five months ago.

March 8 result: BN – 261 votes, PKR – 227
Aug 26 result: BN – 232 votes, PKR – 260

Anwar is also making gains in the state constitutency of Seberang Jaya, where PKR had lost to BN candidate Arif on March 8.

7.25pm: Anwar’s press conference at 9pm is believed to declare his victory. The press conference was rescheduled to 9pm from its original time of 7.45pm.

7.20pm: Unofficial results so far: Anwar 5,855; Arif Shah 1,910

    from Malaysian insider:

    Anwar”s back in the House
AUG 26 Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is back! Fewer than expected voters turned out in the most eagerly-anticipated by-election in history but that will not stop Anwar from returning to Parliament.

Even though official results will only be known in a couple of hours, Barisan Nasional officials told The Malaysian Insider that Anwar has won. BN is trailing after counting in two polling centres.

While he may not be at Friday’s tabling of the 2009 Budget by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is also the PM, he will most definitely be present when the Budget is debated at the next sitting of Parliament on Oct 13.

Anwar’s return to Parliament also marks another milestone in his quest to take over the Federal Government by Sept 16.

Brilliant news. Low turnout of 65% is a disappointment. How come? The most important by-election but where did the voters disappear to? The EC’s electoral list not updated? A winning majority of 16k to 17k, tak puas lah. Congrats to DSAI and may he go to Parliament and kick ass.. Arif can go back to pursue his Phd.

I hope Umno concedes defeat gracefully….and not finding excuses like what I just read in Malaysiakini :-

Muhammad said Umno had been hampered by internal disagreement over the choice of its candidate in the by-election, Arif Shah Omah Shah, and was distracted by upcoming internal leadership polls.

“There are factors that we have to be practical about but this does not mean that he is enjoying full support elsewhere in the country,” he told AFP.

“He is the winner here because this is his hometown and the timing of the elections is to his advantage because Umno’s party polls will be held in a month.”

Muhammad also dismissed talk that the victory would help Anwar oust the government with the help of defecting lawmakers, after landmark March general elections that handed the opposition unprecedented gains.

“I don’t think so. In the last general election, the people gave the Barisan Nasional the mandate to rule, so if the opposition wants to form a government they will have to wait for the next general election.”

Question : is this the way to concede defeat?

    Some victory messages here:-

“This is a clear indication that people of all races have rejected the communal politics of Barisan Nasional. It is a clear endorsement of our reform agenda. We are on track to take over the government,” Anwar told AFP.

“I thank the voters, the wisdom of the people has prevailed. The win shows the people reject the sodomy allegations thrown at my husband,” said Anwar’s wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Tian said that the overwhelming victory showed that “the prime minister’s racial politics is bankrupt”.

Anwar has won Permatang Pauh with a thumping majority of more than 15,000 despite the overwhelming odds stacked against him by the BN machinery and polling held on a working day. This is a convincing victory which declares that all the races, Malays included endorse PR’s multi-racial politics to BN’s divisive racial politics.

If the BN government has any sense, it should heed the voice of the people and set about correcting its ways. But I fear that this message from the people will once again be ignored and Umno will continue to play on racial and religious sentiments in a vain attempt to shore up its flagging support while redoubling its efforts to take down Anwar by false sodomy charges. The speaker of Parliament has already stated there is no urgency to swear in Anwar as an MP which is a dishonourable act to frustrate the will of the people.

As the BN government cannot or will not change, there is no choice but to continue the march to Putrajaya. The huge support given to Anwar during nomination day and throughout the campaigning period shows clearly that the popularity enjoyed by Anwar is not confined to Permatang Pauh. Anwar now can rightly claim to have the mandate of the people to effect a change of Federal government.

The clarion call has sounded. The people have spoken. It is now up to all conscientious MPs from BN to jump ship and realize the Malaysian dream of a fair and accountable government which capitalizes on the strength of racial harmony rather than exploiting the differences between the races.

What is the future of the component parties within the BN ? They must be asking themselves this question now, for the pendulum shift is clear for all to see.

nick, I have not seen the DNA bill but from what I know, it is a legislation that would enable police to obtain, record and store the DNA of every person charged in court or arrested on suspicion of a criminal offence.

At the moment, a suspect can refuse to give his or her DNA sample unless it is proven beyond a reasonable doubt and the court empowers it.

As for the “3 readings of bills” and how a bill becomes a law , I will quote Wikipedia here:

“”A proposed act of law begins its life when a particular government minister or ministry prepares a first draft with the assistance of the Attorney-General’s Department. The draft, known as a bill, is then discussed by the Cabinet. If it is agreed to be submitted to Parliament, the bill is distributed to all MPs. It then goes through three readings before the Dewan Rakyat.

The first reading is where the minister or his deputy submits it to Parliament. At the second reading, the bill is discussed and debated by MPs. Until the mid-1970s, both English and Malay (the national language) were used for debates, but henceforth, only Malay was permitted, unless permission was obtained from the Speaker of the House. At the third reading, the minister or his deputy formally submit it to a vote for approval. A 2/3rds majority is usually required to pass the bill, but in certain cases, a simple majority suffices. Should the bill pass, it is sent to the Dewan Negara, where the three readings are carried out again. The Dewan Negara may choose not to pass the bill, but this only delays its passage by a month, or in some cases, a year; once this period expires, the bill is considered to have been passed by the house.

If the bill passes, it is presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King), who has 30 days to consider the bill. Should he disagree with it, he returns it to Parliament with a list of suggested amendments. Parliament must then reconsider the bill and its proposed amendments and return it to the King within 30 days if they pass it again. The King then has another 30 days to give the royal assent; otherwise, it passes into law. The law does not take effect until it is published in the Government Gazette””

A Sinking “Titanic” (BN) in Malaysia? (The show has just begun!)
    ——————————————————-

Malaysia’s Titanic (BN) was deemed unsinkable when it was first launched. Even when it hit an iceberg on 8 March 2008, it was so hard to accept that the ship will sink. When all efforts to save the ship from sinking was finally abandoned, the Captain (DSAB) just stood silently awaiting the fate as a forlorn man. He was hoping the Carpentia or some other nearby ships will come in time to save the passengers. It was sad to see the Captain firing off some distress flares to alert the Carpentier, but the Carpentier’s Captain (DSNTR) was just not convinced that the Titanic was in distress.

In between is a love story of Leonardo DiCaprio (DSAI) and Kate Winslet (Azizah). Azizah refused to abandon her love, even though many a times, events show she should just save herself. She held on to hopes, hoping against hope that she and her love can pull thru and both will survive this tragedy. Both suffered mentally and emotionally and in the end, it was Azizah left to tell the tale of a great man who sacrificed himself to save her.

As for the crew of the Titanic (Little Napoleons) and their friends who are rich and powerful corporate figures, who helped run the ship, did you see the desperation when they found out that the ship is really sinking. Most of them scramble to save their lives and abandon ship and some, with loads of money found they can’t buy anything they wanted, even a place on a lifeboat to save their lives (TDM migration). But not all, for there was a few brave Napoleons who tried to show they are committed to the name of Titanic (BN) and the show continues.

There was an old couple who just lay in bed waiting for the ship to sink (MIC & PPP) abandoned by the young and too old to move around anymore. There were also musicians still playing the ship’s songs (MCA, PBB, LDP, PBRS, PRS, SAPP, SPDP, SUPP, UPKO) and died like true musicians dedicated to their role of love for music. There were also some crew (GERAKAN) still working to plug the leaks at the bottom of the ship until they themselves died thinking they were heroes not knowing the ship cannot be saved just by plugging some holes.

Do you know who was the director of Titanic (BN) show? James Cameron (TDM).

Did you know this show was shown around the world?

Did you know Malaysia has some of the best actors and actresses and supporting casts?

Anyway, it was just a movie, for the real show has only just begun!

As far as I’m concerned, based on my own observation HERE in Malaysia, ALL of the component parties of BN in MCA, MIC and Gerakan HAS become irrelevant! It’s NOT merely a matter of “what if” anymore…

All of us Malaysians should have go to PP to personally experience the atmosphere there. From the simple kampung folks with their children or some Chinese female shop assistant who wore the mask of Anwar and joyfully toying around with passers by. It’s really something to be cherished…

Hahaha…. It’s very much interesting. All Malaysians from PR regardless of races or religion are TRULLY cooperating with each others. From doing menial jobs like hanging up posters or taking it down, to ferrying up supporters by motorcycles to polling stations.

All of us should look at the bewildered face of BN supporters (or whatever remains of them to be precise…), when the polling stops at 5pm. It seems that they are in a hurry to disappear. I dunno what to say. They seems not being able to see right through the wind of change that have been sweeeping Malaysians right now.

It’s interesting to see many people who played their part willingly including that one particular Imam Ramlang who have come out with the real story on all off these “Asshole” allegations by Saiful and the gang. Latest news I’ve heard, this poor imam (a Sabahan) has been detained by the police.

Forget about GERAKAN. Whether they realize it or not, they have become absolute… May PR stay TRUE to it’s cause for a better Malaysia…

    MERDEKA… MERDEKA… MERDEKA…

    veonszu,

You are right, repent and reform or be damned!

The state we are in now is exactly the same as what we watched in the Korean TV serial, JEWEL IN THE PALACE. 大长今。This serial is my favourite show and I keep watching without getting bored.

The story of this serial is about those people in power manipulating the innocence so to maintain in power at all cost with no conscience, natural justice and meritocracy. The one who was inflicted has this ‘never say die’ attitude and fight for her rights and justice for her parents and friends.

Finally, with the help of officers with conscience, she managed to seek justice for her parents and friends. She was willing to ‘forgive and forget’ and requested those in the wrongs to admit and repent, but still these people were not willing to repent and that spells the end for them.

I wish those in Umno and BN will not reach that kind of extent, ……………

If you guys have not watched this TV serial, go buy it and you won’t regret, I assure you. Infact, this serial should be used as teaching material for our education system.

    Anak Malaysia,

You are right, no ‘if’ and no ‘but’.

All must be out of BN if they want to stay ‘relevant’ and left Umno alone in BN, then they can do whatever they like with their racist mentality.

    BRAVO TO ALL MALAYSIAN, except……

By the way, sons of Ibrahim are all good good, examples lie Anwar Ibrahim, Zaid Ibrahim, Haris Ibrahim. Are you one of the ‘anak of Ibrahim’?

Technically speaking, Arif Shah has lost his Seberang Jaya state seat since no one polling station from his ‘stronghold’ exceed votes to Anwar Ibrahim.

    Should he resign then?

I have read some reports saying Arif Shah is a nice man (I personally think so as he himself did not attack Anwar on ‘sodomy’ during his campaign, only Najib plays sodomy) but in the wrong camp. Perhaps he wants to switch camp?

I was caught in the traffic jam leading to the UMNO’s building, somewhere in the middle of Tanah Liat – Kubang Semang road (i think…) around 9pm. I have to make a complete U-turn as my fuel is already running low and the warning light is blinking…

Later, a friend informed me that there is a commotion there. From what I’ve heard, there are angry people who demanded money that have been promised to them (by UMNO) and when nothing ever materialised, they choose to throw rocks etc. towards the UMNO’s buildings…

Anybody can confirmed on this? If this is for real, I’m glad that UMNO finally get to know the bitter taste of their own medicine… hahaha!
