Have a decent fight !

11 months after the 12 General Election in March 08, let me ask all of you out there a question:

Have there been any real changes in the country?

Your answers, I have no doubt,  will be the same as mine. It is an emphatic “NO”.

Corruptions have not be any lesser. Abuse of power is still there. Arrogance, as seen in the toppling of Perak government despite the groundswell of opposition to it, is no less than before.

A politician asked me: Maybe the power that be does not know how to change and where to change.  Maybe.

But the answers are so simple.

First, find out the root causes of why BN lost in 308. Tackling the root causes would have enabled the parties in power to change.  3 months may be short , 6 months may not be sufficient. But now, almost a year has gone by.. and we have yet to see any changes.

Not only we did not see any real changes, some have told me that things have gone worse.

The Perak case is a clear example. This is so worng, but the people doing it is not realising it…. All for self interest..

One man stood out and he is Karpal Singh, the Lion of Jelutong.. What he has said about the hopping, Hudud, and even his views that royalty can be taken to court are based on his personal belief and principles.  He is a rare one who has stood up for his principles, and how many Malaysian politicians can claim to be like that?

Whne all others have lost their political morality, Karpal has remained truthful to his belief and himself… By that alone , he stood high and proud.

I hope and I would strongly urge  UMNO not to resort to using “treason’ issue in the Bukit Gantang by election. I dread some of them will go to ay extent to gain votes; and knowing that non Malay votes are as good as gone, they would resort to this issue to try to play up the so called ‘treason” – persoannly I do not see anything to do with treason – to fan the emotions of the rural Malays and gain votes… By doing so, they would be splitting the people and make polarisation along political lines worse.

Let the 2 sides have a fair and decent fight.

Yesterday they said they want to change

Today they say they want to change

After umno/bn no longer in power they still say they want to change

Their only hope and dream is that people will come to accept them voluntarily, without them doing any changes since they still have the power and money and will fight to their death to remain in control with no consideration at all if the country and rakyat burn to death. This is the way they call change!

Well said. Can someone dispute the fact that Karpal Singh is a good politician, but more importantly a good politician with moral intact.

Am I right to stick to my view that morality is the most important criteria for a good politician?

Morality overrides all factors, legality inclusive.

BN may have won its battle in Perak legally, but lost a war morally. Let’s back to basic, BN, and have a decent fight. Even if you lose, it is not the end of it. Most importantly, you can still stand high and proud.

cilipadi. Karpal Singh is a good man who keeps to his principles. But he is a lousy politician. He makes a lot of noise but usually outside Parliament. He usually get banned by the House Speaker early in the year. Other than that as opposition, he did not achieve much.

I am not against him, But that is my impression.
We need politicians who can go beyond this.

    Dr. Hsu,

I work with kampung Malays. They are not what you think they are.

As I said before, rural Malays are honest, simple, friendly. They are pure Malays, not ‘celup’.

Those who protested at Karpal Singh office were orchestrated, they are Umno Malays, not pure rural Malays. In difficult time like this, bread and butter are their concern, not ‘treason’.

You have my respect. Your views are brilliant. You should be in the position of KTK. He has no idea at all.

    Dr Hsu,

There is no decency as far as BN is concerned. They have turned the police, EC and even judges to work for them. They have even fattened the civil servants with fat pays and better than private sectors benefits to win their votes. This is bribery of the worst order! BN knows that theirs is an immoral and unethical government but if they fight decently they will surely lose because they don’t know how to fight squarely so don’t expect any change. Theirs is a guerilla mentality with no credibility.

It may even be necessary for the PR to fight fire with fire but do it cleverly. The upcoming by election battles will see BN employing dirty tricks again as well as dangling money in front of the voters to entice them. Well, I always say take them but show them who is the real boss come 13th GE!!!

    cilipadi,
morality is important to a good politician, and of course a good politician should have morality…Otherwise he cannot be termed good.

A good politician should be someone who has good motive to come to politics, to see progress in the country, to lift the standard of living of the masses, to ensure environmental issues are well taken care of, to provide good and affordable educaton as well as healthcare, affordable drinking water, and of course good governance. These are the basic things that he can build things on.

For those who have good motives, I am sure they would have high moral values… They wont be swayed by offers of money and so on… and they should govern with principles..

But those with high morality must have strong determination to push through what is good for people in the face of opposition… I would classify Lee K Y as a good leader with high moral, and he has the strength and determination to get things done his way…

DrM is a strong leader and had determination. whether he can be said to have high moral, I leave it to judge…So many things and institutions were compromised … all in the name of restructing the society….

I 100% agreed with “cillipadi” that the real kampong malays are good, decent and simple malaysians.
As i have said before, the current racial, religious, corruption etc.. we have in Bolehland are mainly caused by those mamaks who claimed that they are more ” malay” than the kampong malays and some greedy selfish urban malays.
Just look at the new MB in one state, if someone care to dig into his personal history, I can bet this guy is actually a mamak or has mamak blood.
PKR must fight these bums particularly the mamaks with fire. Otherwise, these mamaks will pollute the simple kampong malays mind.

To many commentators here, don’t deceive yourselves that morality is not important to be a good politician. Don’t care who you are, a politician or non-politician, if you have low moral, can you regard yourselves as a decent person?

For those God believers, can you be proud of yourselves when you reach you judgement day if you are someone immoral?

For those who believe in nature law of karma, can you be proud of your deeds when going to the next life if you were immoral in the current life?

Judge yourselves honestly. Sigh!!! Morality is not important. Shame of you guys.

If UMNO is serious to change its image , it should just fight a clean fight…. Do not use money, except the amount permissible under the law, and do not use state machinery to canvass.

If they can do that and fight a clean war in issues alone, then I will say maybe UMNO can cahnge… Otherwise, I will stick to my view that it is a party that will never change, except after losing in a by election.

So I call upon UMNO leaders, especially Najib, to show to people that they can fight a decent war and they are indeed determined to fight a decent war to prove that they have intention to change..

for BN to gain back control over Perak is like an “insult” towards PR because they’re the one (precisely Anwar) that in the first place announced such idea.now they have to swallow the bitter truth and they lose in their game.funny thing is that PR seems dissatisfied with how BN conquered Perak.then again PR have to accept it as a bitter medicine.the morale to PR is dont underestimate your opponent.

Have a decent fight – this sentence should applied also to PR.

but victory would be much exciting and sweet if BN declared they win through a proper election.but like i said before the things that happened in Perak is a bitter medicine for PR.

I agree with fully with Peter Yew, he said it all. UMNO controls all levels, the judiciary, police etc. The whole executive and administration, all..including grooming and nurturing an “army” of rubble-rousing Malay-/Islamic based NGOs, student/graduate associations to support its racist cause. Not to mention UMNO Youth, a wing who don’t give a damn about morals.

Cilipadi, you can force me to eat a ton of chillies and I still won’t believe UMNO will EVER change.

This country needs a two-party system desperately. Majority knows that UMNO is not interested in democracy but only to control power and MCA, Gerakan..etc are just tools to justify its existence.

You know lah, I set this as a mission to achieve, ie to tell Gerakan die hards here that morality is important. It seems that the more they argue, the more tails that they hide so far appear. Never mind, let them show off their tails.

Umno is immoral, if not, they won’t use police, judge, money, media, and so on to maintain themselves in power.

I won’t feed you my tons of chillies. As we all know, Umno won’t change.

Since you touch on Umno, as an outsider, I see them as they have the mentality of ‘Tanah Melayu’ is belongs to them, and they can do things with their whim and fancy even to the extent of breaking laws or morality. Correct me if I am wrong in this sense.

I will just stop commenting if I feel that I have achieved my mission. Dr. Hsu’s Forum is great and I feel I am obliged to chip in some of my views here, especially those who justify power existence in the expense of morality.

BN or PR can learnt a things or two from the latest Perak episode. No point PR blaming others for their downfall. Perak needs leaders with ideas to move the state back into development gear. Perak needs economic development, social development, infrastructure development, creating jobs opportunities, educational opportunities, sense of security, clean environment, affordable clean water, clean and cheaper hawkers food and many many more. Do we think PR is that accountable, transparent and competence? Perak is well known for it various delicious hawkers food. BN should take note to promote it.

It doesn’t matter who became the advisers to the MB but Perakians need to know who can deliver.
Rational and sensible is here to stay. Now PR have not make up their mind, they choose to sue so and so, change their plan, how we can expect they make wise choice and decision for Perakians. The main motive is to shift the blame and cry wolf. Life have to move on for Perakians for a better era and face the economic challenge ahead of us.

Ha, ha We have to thank Dr Hsu for providing this blog apart from sharing views, also educating each other. I don’t know others, but you all are “educating” me.

CYC is dead-right. As a matter of principle (not just morals), Chang Ko Youn SHOULD decline the appointment. It will lift the “morale” (not morals) of the party FROM the perception within and without the Gerakan circles. Talk is cheap, action serves better.

Gandhi was a good leader though some disputed he makes a good politician. His simplicity was a blessing and earned much respect after he died. I don’t know much about PAS Nik Aziz but I heard he has some common ground in simplicity. Although sometimes, he makes some “out-of-earth” comments on women but he doesn’t look like a crook compared to snakes or anacondas in “you-must-not-object” party.

There are no perfect politicians. They are no different from us except the posts and positions, and in BN, perks, privileges and power to make more lives miserable. In Malaysia, these so-called leaders are not really contributing much. Favorite hobby, attending functions, give cheap talk speeches, shake hands and collect their fat salaries.

Example, In Korea, there are so much effort by their ministries, to prompt energy saving projects. From factories to fishermen. Bio alternative energy, industrial changes on products to reduce pollution (carbon dioxide) in environment. Introducing solar energy, wing power etc. A host of activities.

Here, when was the last time you hear a BN Ministry introducing some creative idea to improve the lives of Malaysians. Any??? Since 308? Except some stupid minister announcing more low-cost houses (or pigeon holes) for the poor. And the low-cost houses are often an insult to human dignity. Eventual lift breakdowns, poor environment and bleeding grounds for drug addicts …etc. Developers sucking up to the government and government not punishing errant ones. It’s just sickening.

Enough said, BN must be kicked out for alternatives. It’s a sad state of affairs. But I’m optimistic. Change will come….though not easily.

Cilipadi, I’m not great. Nothing I have said is my own. The views just passed through my head, well, from the heart too. But it’s not mine like patent right. But thanks for the compliment.

    Just a diversion….for us all to think about…..why not….

I have a suggestion and we need to seriously look into it happening.

Congress of India has had Sonia Ghandi and Manmohan Singh. Why cannot Malaysia make a double whammy of that…..

NIZAR for PM while ANWAR becomes Sonia and helps in the reforming and cleaning up of the bad habits. He would be the best person for this while NIZAR administers. I think BARISAN RAKYAT is ready for that and i think MALAYSIANS ARE READY. The role played by Anwar bringing the PAS, DAP and Keadilan together is more important now. Let us the pass the PM’s job to Nizar……

RAHMAN theory………..”NIZAR” to be the next PM. Lets go for it. ANWAR will always be the MAN no matter what but let NIZAR administer MALAYSIA like what he did in Perak.

my conscience is clear. I have voiced out to top leader that party should have pushed for a dissolution of state assembly and go back to the people, both before and after the hopping of the 3.

I have also warned them not to take in Hee, and also objected to Gerakan taking a post in the new Administration.

But Gerakan does not belong to me alone. There are differnece of opinion within the party just like in any other organisation. So pls do not blame me for Gerakan taking up the advisor’s post.

I have said beofe, it would be easy for me just quit and wash my hands off the whole things, rather than being slammed left and right here…

But we in Gerakan is also ‘fighting’ a war, and trying to influence as much grassroots as possible..

I have in fact gone over this many times… Just tell me what can i gain from remaining in the party except trying to speak the truth and get the party back to its original ideology…. I am a marked man by UMNO and SB. So if it is positions that i want, i would have kept very quiet and be a UMNO boy , rather than fighting an opinion war inside and slamming UMNo for all its wrongs…

I think one of our Branch Chairman who has commented has a very valid point. There are some members wishing to see me go away , especially those who have close ties to UMNO , and even SB, not so much of the oppostion party members, as what I am doing inside is helping the opposition parties.. Pls look at the bigger picture… the same end result is what we all want.

I am not going to response to these fellows again as I have explained so many times before…. SO pls bear with me if from now on till my self imposed time frame , i am not going to answer anymore about my presence in Gerakan . I am not going to answer to those who who slammed me when Gerakan leaders did something wrong even after I have voiced out strongly against the wrongs.. It is like US government blackmarking every Malaysian for the mistakes of some Malaysian leaders…It is like US government blaming Malaysians for Malaysian leaders taking up position in certain anti US organisations….

    Cilipadi,

It’s not BN or PK who have to learn, it is the ordinary folks, Malaysians like me. Well, you too though by nationality you are not a citizen here. It’s a blessing, isn’t it?

Actually, morality is a narrow term, I prefer to call it “spirituality.” Spiritual laws, encompassing. You will be surprised that not only individuals, but countries have their own “karma”, collective karma. It’s not a Buddhism sort of notion. but universally acknowledged by psychics too (i.e. famous US psychic Edgar Cayce).

You find more natural disasters in some countries more than others, of course, scientists say the countries happen to be located at fault lines (liable to earthquakes). Floods, fire etc.

Politics and spirituality? Like water and oil. Tough, Cilipadi. You want the truth? You want to eat and keep the cake at the same time, ha…..ha….maybe David Copperfield can do it. Not the sages…..

OK, as long as politicians speak the truth, keep promises, and don’t betray the trust of the people who voted them in. These are tough enough for them. Don’t have too high expectations from and of them. And help Malaysians evolve a better way of life. That’s a tall order already.

    Dr. Hsu,

I appreciate your effort. In fact, you are a role model for a politcian of high moral. You don’t regard yourself a politician, that is the crux of the situation you are in.

You don’t regard yourself as a politician simply because you perceived politician must be someone that can twist and bend, in short, willing to compromise morality, which you won’t do yourself. You should lead others of same thinking so that people’s perception that ‘politics is dirty’ are no more there. By then, more decent people are willing to join politics and contribute to the betterment of Malaysia as a whole. Since you choose to be in the platform surrounded by “dirty politicians”, many of your fellow commentators like A true Malaysian, Justin Choo, Petestop feel that your rightful platform should be PR and not BN, simply because Umno is not going to change (you are in agreement to this), and Gerakan is not going to change either and willingly to be used as tools by Umno.

Put it this way, many are pessimistic you are able to convince Gerakan to pull out from BN. No one is in doubt of your clear conscience, let’s be assured of that.

If so many people think that your love to Gerakan will be a wasteful one, no one will blame you if your deep love is shifted to PR, which need quality people like you.

LKY treat the leftist like animal, did he ever believe in morality when he lock up all his opponents? Among the Asian, I think Chiang Ching-Kuo is more open and tolerant and at the same time did improve the Taiwanese living standard. Agree to disagree is a virtue that not only for all of us to appreciate but more importantly to practice.

If Dr. Hsu one day finds it is no longer fun and satisfying to write his blog anymore, the blogosphere will loss a rational and thinking voice. I am quite sure most if not all of us would not like to see that occur.

So, please respect Dr. Hsu’s view and stand, and just leave his personal conviction to play his role in Gerakan alone. Instead, sharing our thoughts, ideas and opinions on issues (not personal issue) will certainly make our blogging experience more fulfilling and meaningful.

So, can we have a decent fight in blogophere and Dr. Hsu’s forum?

    CYC,

I think all these are due to ‘frustration’ that everyone of us has on the immoral take-over of Perak government, more so this involved the highly respected personnel, the former Lord President of Malaysia. Before HRH Sultan Perak announcing his decision, many were optimistic that his decision would be dissolving the Perak State Assembly, but it was the reverse. Many commentators here were disappointed and frustrated, that’s includes Dr. Hsu himself. Dr. Hsu is infact more frustrated than most of us.

Many frustrated genuine commentators left this forum simply because they opined that it is useless for Dr. Hsu to continue to stay in CC with a bunch of immoral hopeless leaders. Their reasons are valid and I don’t dispute that. I also advocate the same.

Having said the above, no one really understand Dr. Hsu unless we are in the same boat with him. His writings and thoughts are genuine and carry a lot of truth, that in itself, are worth our reading regardless of which party he is in.

You have my support, Dr. Hsu. Just some words of encouragement.

    Hsu,
Well, you can carry on fighting for chance within Gerakan. However, I am afraid you would be like Jeyaratnam. So do Karpal too? He might end up like David Marshall.
Good luck to you! For me, be brave like Tan Chee Koon, one of the founder of Gerakan leave the party.

    Doc,

How to have a decent fight when the EC under the control of UMNO/BN id not impartial?

Amazingly, the EC did not choose to have the by-election anytime during the 1st term break for Malaysian schools during 14-22 March (13-21 March for Kedah)! Wouldn’t this 1 week school break be the most convenient time considering that most of the polling stations are at schools?

    http://romerz.blogspot.com/2009/02/wheres-your-impartiality-ec.html

Doc, I no longer have the energy to SMS KTK, let him know about my posting if you think it will do any good. He is still my friend but in my eyes, he is a hindrance to your party. Until and unless he is removed from president, your party has no chance of survival.

In fact I would go as far as to say that even with his removal, your party’s survival is 30-70 at best!

    Romerz,
You know, me being in Singapore for so long, I have noticed despite many mean things have been said towards PAP government and particularly the Grand Old LKY, the EC there has been extremely clean.
Nobody would say that the EC there is biased. Sone would say well GRCs destroyed the chances of opposition’s chance of winning the election but rest assured, there is no phantom voters.
LKY is mean but fair. Yup, Jeyaratnam has been tekaned but his sons are spared. Philips is the President of Law Society and Kenneth is a renowned Banker with 500K salary a year. But don’t seems to get any fairness in Malaysia.
Gerakan, like I say is dead when Tan Chee Koon left the party. Tan Chee Koon, the only person I admire, though he does not have political acumen, unlike LKY, Goh Keng Swee or even Devan Nair, the founder of DAP. Devan Nair single handedly build NTUC provided much grassroot for PAP. Hmm…….Karpal should take a leaf from Devan Nair.

    Dr Hsu

    UMNO will never change
    BN will never change
GERAKAN after its rebranding still dont change
    OTHER BN COMPONENTS dont change…

The simple answer is : Rakyat will change Federal Govt next General Election.
If not, rakyat will revolutionize means to change
    the Federal Government.

Its clear now that Federal Govt is flexing its force, threat whenever it could and become the greatest liar in history of Malaysia.

In short, BN is carving its own tomb stone.

UMNO won’t change as long as they still lead by a group of so call “businessmen”. Politic for them is Money Games. Profits is their ultimate aim. Rakyat for them is nothing except during election day, they will be treated as “Raja Sehari”.

UMNO won’t change..whether is Baru or Lama, UMNO or ONMU. If they don’t change then rakyat have to change them.

Please dont worry too much of that UMNO

    UMNO wont change one bit.
    Vain self interest = UMNO

All they know is to blame others for the 308

    UMNO Penang blames Gerakan Penang.

    May I suggest :

Why dont all the BN components abandon UMNO for once?

Please abandon UMNO two months prior the
    next GE.

UMNO was Gerakan “business” partner in Penang
UMNO will only be Gerakan’s friend when UMNO
in desperate need to achieve power.
