Mathematical calculation of BN’s chances

Let us use Bukit Gantang voting trend and work out the chances of winning in the next election by BN mathematically, assuming that the trend continues as it is and that Bukit Gantang’s constituents represent the thinking of all malaysians.

In this by election:

BN won

57% of Malay votes

25% of Chinese votes and

40% of the Indian votes.

Let us hypothesize a seat with 75% Malay, 20% Chinese and 5% Indians votes.

57% of 75%   =  42.75%

25%  of 20%  =  5%

40% of 5% =   2%

which gives a total of 49.75% which is a loss, since a win needs more than 50% of votes in a Kawasan.

This means that BN will have no chance to win in any seats with 75% or less of Malay voters.

It can only hope to win in seats that have more than 75% of Malays and as far as I can recall, this is less than half the total seats in West malaysia.

Which means that if the present trends continue, BN will lose big in West Malaysia.

And do not forget, a general election is very different from a by election. In by election, the awesome Bn machinery is focused on a single spots, or in this case, 3 spots, whereas in a GE , its resources will be stretched and thus chances are even seats with 75% to 80% of malay votes are not safe and can best be classified as borderline.

This is purely based on Mathematical calculation, but I hope this will serve as a warning to the componet parties, they will be wiped out..

    Dr. Hsu,

I was once told by a senior politician that general election results are like the pendulum swing. It is a big swing toward opposition (PR) in 308.

Why not ( and why not you ) wish that it will make a big swing back to BN by the nest GE??

Why bother to calculation BN chances now because they still have 4 solid years to do the “unity and performance” HaHa! hahaha!

A good theoretical calculation, Dr. Hsu but even seats with strong Malay majority are not safe for BN.

In Kuala Terengganu, Malays comprise 88.1% but BN still lost in a by-election.

In the Malay heartlands, PAS battles with BN on Islamic credentials and with all the corruption that BN is famous for, many Malays are convinced that PAS practice a truer form of Islam. So a Malays majority seat may go to PAS.

It may seem odd, but mixed seats with strong non-Malay component used to be safe seats for BN. The EC recognized this and created lot’s of mixed seats.

These seats were considered unwinnable for the opposition and it held true as long as people voted along racial lines.

In the old day, Malays will not vote for a DAP candidate while Chinese will not vote for a PAS candidate. If both parties field candidates the opposition vote is split and BN romps home to victory. (PKR had yet to exist).

There are no more safe seats for BN in the Peninsula unless we are talking about the toilet seat!

As a matter of interest, this is the average Malay vote Umno got for the following general elections:

    1999: 49%
    2004: 60%
    2008: 55%

Malay support for Umno usually hovers about 55% and never exceeds 60%. In 2004 euphoria over the retirement of Mahathir and ascension of Abdullah push it to 60%. In 1999, Malay support collapsed to 49% over the Anwar sacking and it was the non-Malays who saved BN.

Any GE result or by election dependon issues that raise by the parties that involve in it. It depend on the sentimen, perception, performance and suitablity of a candidate in that particular situation and place. What I can analyse is PR won in Bukit Gantang is based on the situation taht exist. The non-Malays are suave and smart to give a candidate a chance. If the representative cannot performance, then the people will give them a boot.

What I gather is service, work and policies that can draw support from the masses. What BN or PR representatives need to work hard from day one after each and every election. What tactics and strategies that can win the mind and heart of the people. If the non Malays can give their vote to PAS, then it can give back to BN. It is what we called as pendulum swings. Study election history in any part of the world that practice democracy, the people will decide the one that deliver. A new team have emerge and the strategy to win the mind and heart had begun.

What the people want is better quality of life, education opportunities, multi racial composition in civil service, efficient local government service, flood control, bread and butter issues, sense of belonging, health care, social security and a clean environment. The people want someone that can deliver. Work harder KTK to implement more unity programmes, mobilize more grassroot unity projects such as Rukun Tetangga, unity club in schools, involve NGO and youth organization in unity programmes, getting more East Malaysian to visit West Malaysia and encourage multi cultural activities in Malaysia

BN will gain back the trust and confidence of the people through brainstorming, engaging of new media, involving NGO organization, youth organization, creating equal opportunities for all Malaysians and etc. The people will support One Malaysia, Performance Now, People First slogan if civil service move and work harder. It reflect back on the government of the day.

On emotional charge, disatisfaction and sentiment to influence the masses. What is theory practise by BN is used by PR today? As what we have known today, BN have brought political stabilty, racial harmony and economic prosperity to all. Are we not happy with the development today? Are we jealous with other sucess? Even LKY in Singapore face a lot of social problems. Our country too is facing numerous problems with aging society, unemployed youngster, mushrooming of cyber cafes, indiscipline, social problems and etc. We need to move on to overcome this numerous challenge ahead of us.

I did not realise Koh Tsu Koon lost by such wide margin. Any decent honourable man would have resigned.

Sigh! Decency and honour is not part of his trait. He is just another sleazy lying politician.

A politician joke (lifted from somewhere else)
    —————————————————-

While walking down the street one day, a Gerakan CM is tragically hit by a lorry and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

“Welcome to Heaven,” says St. Peter. “Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.”

“No problem, just let me in.” says the Gerakan big wig.

“Well, I’d like to but I have orders from higher up. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in Hell and one in Heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.”

“Really, I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in Heaven,” says the Gerakan CM.

“I’m sorry but we have our rules.” And with that, St. Peter escorts the Gerakan bigwig to the lift and he goes down, down, down to Hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a club and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him, everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, hug him, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster and caviar. Also present is the Devil ( BN, too), who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes.

They are having such a good time that, before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a big hug and waves while the lift rises. The lift goes up, up, up and the door reopens on Heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

“Now it’s time to visit Heaven.” So 24 hours pass with the Gerakan CM joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

“Well then, you’ve spent a day in Hell and another in Heaven. Now choose your eternity.”

He reflects for a minute, then the head of state answers: “Well, I would never have thought it, I mean Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in Hell.”

So Saint Peter escorts him to the lift and he goes down, down, down to Hell. Now the doors of the lift open and he is in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags. The Devil comes over to the Gerekan bigwig and lays an arm on his neck.

“I don’t understand,” stammers the Gerakan CM. Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and club and we ate lobster and caviar and danced and had a great time. Now all there is a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.

The Devil looks at him, smiles and says, “Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted for us!”

Look at the flip flop and uncertain policies of PR? Can we claim the PR is the hero of the day only? Can PR have substance to bring back the shining crowm of Penang? We cannot deny the contribution that have brought by GERAKAN to Penang and the nation as a whole.

Gerakan shall return one day with determination, better service, dedication and listen more to the masses. The people will decide who govern the country.
