Press statement on death of a MACC Witness

 Press Statement 16th July 2009

1.     I refer to the shocking news about the death of Mr Teoh Beng Hock , the political secretary to an Exco member of Selangor.

 2.     He was allegedly only a witness called up by MACC for questioning and was allegedly released at 3.45 am this morning.  However, according to news report, he was discovered dead on the roof of an adjacent building at 1.30pm today,

 3.     Since there are many unanswered questions in this case, I hope that the authority would leave no stones unturned to uncover what has really happened.

 4.     Since he was under the custody of MACC and died an unnatural death  while still in the MACC building,  MACC would have to give a satisfactory answer not only to the family of the decease but to the public at large.

 5.     If Malaysia prides itself to be a civilised country, this death must be thoroughly investigated, and there must be full transparency and accountability in the process of investigation.

 6.     Last but not least, my condolence to the family and I am sure all Malaysians of conscience would share their grief.

The family affected should pursue till the cows come home. They should sue the MACC and the government. Civil NGOs must not leave this incident out of sight for a moment and pressure the government down to the knees till the truth comes out. All conscientious Malaysians should take it upon themselves to know the truth.

    This is an explosive case.

It MUST be remembered and pursued till the culprits are prosecuted.

    ATM,
What we want in this case is to find out the truth . Political party is just a tool to achieve an aim. We need people to pile on presure no matter where theya re from, whether they are just ordianry Malaysians, NGOs, or memebrs of political parties.

We need to put fear into them. SO my statement is nothing except to exert pressure to find out the truth .

They will feel the heat more if members of component parties speak up , and thus i am using Gerakan platform to issue this statement instead of just a blogger. There are still many concerned and conscientitious members who are very upset and angry with this.

The end result, that is to put heat on them to conduct a proper investigation and to reform the way the agency functions, justifies my using this tool to issue the statement.

    …………………………………………………
And I see SB has come back just when we want to put heat onto the agency…

There is no love lost between the Police and MACC. The problem is that the police officers are wary of MACC as it can make the live of the police officers miserable. Hence, I am not sure if we can get a professional investigation.

Second thing we can do is to pressure th govt to fire the DG of MACC. He is due to retire soon. We should get him fired before retirement so that he dont get his pension. He dont deserve this pension.

The Gerakan of Lim Chong Eu’s days is gone, to be replaced by a barely recognizable parody of its former self. The original shinning ideology of Gerakan has been replaced by the prime purpose of seeking power and position for its leaders. Idealism of social justice has been discarded to be replaced by hard realities of personal agendas.

Where is the real Gerakan? It was given notice when Lim Keng Yaik took over. It was slowly throttled by Koh Tsu Koon’s weakness and personal ambition. It died at the 12th general election.

There are still some good men in Gerakan like Dr. Hsu and a vibrant grassroot but there is a growing disconnect between them and the leadership. Soon they will be no more as they bleed away disillusioned and dispirited by the party they once held in high esteem.

What will be left of Gerakan will be an empty husk, a party for hopefuls seeking a springboard into the corridors of power. A party indistinguishable from MCA!

You now have all the more reason to be stronger, to stand up for Teoh and the rest of us whose voices are too soft to be heard. Our voices are only in our votes.

By doing nothing, surely we allow Evil to flourish. Just look at PKFZ and the old MAS. The can of worms now revealed showed that doing nothing and hiding under OSA allowed Evil to rampage and robbed our Nation till senseless. Teoh’s death is heart-wrenching. The Nation wants justice and answers. MACC is silent hitherto. Why? I hope Dr. Hsu, when you come back, your voice will continue to be loud and clear thru your writings. i had refrain myself from commenting in this blog due to some reason or may be i m too proud to apologize to Dr Hsu over certain words he deemed too degrading.

however, i want to make use of this blog to ask KTK will he feel shameful if he ever visit the graveyard of his spiritual master, the late Venerable Chu Mo for his failure to uphold the basic principle to serve with honesty and dignity. Is he still practice the fourth precept of not telling lie. Is he still has in him the pride of a “scholar” as very much an essence of a learned person within the definition of Chinese culture. He has loss the 2nd and 4th pillars (Yi and Cher) of the 4 basic traits a gentleman should possess.

So, it is so unbecoming if i will to call him to quit just like someone had asked Ong Ka Ting to quit some years ago on the ground that if one holding position without power , he might as go back his kampong to plant potatoes.

Lastly, i repeat my conclusion on Gerakan :
The utter shame and fallacy of a so called elite party without substance and soul.

I read the Q&A given by the head of the MACC. He said that Teoh was interoogated by only 1 person. Can you believe this? Another DAP chap who was also questioned in the same building at the same time said there were 2 guys, each playing the good cop and bad cop routine and later both upped the tempo to pressurize and to coerce him into making a false confession. This chap also said he met Teoh at around 6am in the toliet and Teoh looked tired and merely uttered a sound. The MACC head also siad Teoh was released at 3.45am. My question now is: after being subjected to so much abuse by these animals, would you or would any sensible person request to sleep on the abuser’s couch?? Any sensible person would try to run away as far as your legs could carry and with haste away from the damn MACC building. How come Teoh did not do that? Also, did he use his mobile to inform anyone from 3.45am to 6am? If not that would also be very very strange???? Our mobile is our lifeline to the outside world. If I was Teoh, the first person I would call would have been my fiance who must have been sick with worry since I went incommunicable. Would you agree with me on this logic? Putting two and two together, I cannot but come to the hasty conclusion that Teoh was murdered because his interrogators went too far. Suicide theory is debunked because Teoh has a bigger reason to live life. Accidental fall? I cannot belief this. You see, just assuming Teoh slept on the couch from 3.45am to 6am. He then woke up and went to the washroom and met the other DAP chap. From then on, he would have proceeded to go home. How come he fell 9 floor????????? I think the MACC has a lot to answer this mystery.

    What “middle ground???

    An innocent life is lost.

I am sure you know why China embraced communism. There was no other way, except to fight back. The evil KMT regime was beyong repair. There was no other way but fight or be trampled!! Mao just did that, and the people supported the just and only way.

You advised us to learn from history. Isn’t it ironic, that you are still on “middle ground”??

Sorry Dr. I have to say what I need to say; after what ATM had written. As you said, all of us are very angry. Most of us are just ordinary people, without any impressive credentials to influence others; or rather others are not likely to be influenced by us because we are nobodies. But Dr Hsu, you are are a different genrie. I feel very strongly that it’s time you stand up for all of us. After all as you said you are a small candle. At least you are a small candle. Dr Hsu,

Take a break from blogging if it makes you feel better but don’t stop. I understand how you feel.

In your case, being hammered from both sides, in my case making apologies for those I support to bring change.

Honestly I almost gave up as well but after taking a few days off, I began to remember why I started blogging in the first place. To provoke critical thinking amongst fellow Malaysians so that they are able to discern truth from propaganda and also to encourage them to take their future into their own hands.

Yours was the very first blog I followed regularly after 8 March 2008 and it inspired me so much that I started my own blog soon after that.

So please don’t stop blogging for too long. Your moderate and sensible voice is needed now more than ever!

I know I have criticized you in the past as well for continuing to be a Gerakan member but that does not mean I do not respect your views. On the contrary, I think you are walking a very difficult path, torn between loyalty (which is a good trait) and the bigger picture of a better Malaysia which the party had abandoned when it chose to side with UMNO.

I feel your pain but having said that I also understand that no two persons have the same threshold for pain. At the way things are going, I’m sure you will reach yours soon enough.

Until then, be strong but most of all be Malaysian!

There is a saying which I draw inspiration from whenever I’m down :-

    Dr Hsu,

Yes, it may be a good time for you to take a rest from blogging. It has never been easy to take a middle path and working for change within a party that has lost its soul. However, I respect you for taking that path for so long. May your rest give you time to ponder where to go from here.

The death Mr. Teo is an unfortunate by product of the years of corruption of society’s values. Our society have for too long allowed crooks and thugs to govern us. Leaders of UMNO and it’s subservient component parties should perhaps ponder what part they have played to bring us to this point.

The Chief of Police had so casually declared it “sudden death” and then expects us to believe that they can be trusted to conduct a fair investigation? If I am not mistaken, the last time this statement was made, subsequent investigations resulted in no one being found to be guilty of criminal behaviour. Yet, all of us feel in our heart that no justice prevailed.

Yes, it is time all of us ponder if by our silence and unwillingness to speak out and act, the crooks and thugs have flourished and become our masters.

May God have mercy on us for our failure to stand up and oppose evil and those that are subservient to it. Will we now act accordingly and not be lied to by MSMs and succumb to our fear of the powers that be?

Honestly, I don’t know, but I hope I will find the courage to do so before too long.

    Dear Dr Hsu,

We have several questions to ask pertaining to the murder investigation.

It is my belief that all office buildings have several security features to prevent unauthorized access. First at the very minimum, the offices of MACC at the 14th floor as well as the offices of the other companies on other floors would have a security access card system to prevent unauthorized persons from even entering the premises. Therefore we can surmise that Teoh most probably fell from the 14th floor in a room within the MACC offices as it would be physically impossible for him to be at any other offices at any other floor from which to fall to his death. This would also rule out the despicable rumors floated by guilty conscience UMNO bloggers that Teoh was murdered by triads linked to the DAP Exco named by Wee Choo Keong, for pray tell how did the supposed triad hitman gain access to the MACC office or any office for that matter from which to throw Teoh out of? I hope that puts to rest the juvenile fantasies of the UMNO crowd.

Next it is a minimum requirement for any office building to have at least CCTV on the ground floor lobby, in the lift as well as at the entrances to the offices (i.e. the corridor outside each lift). So again, if Teoh was killed by triad hitman, can the UMNO controlled police provide video evidence of the imaginary triad hitman entering the premises from ground floor to lift to MACC office and then back out again? Not barring the fishy non-existence of CCTV within the entire MACC office, all MACC personnel who are in the office from 3am to 1.30pm are the most likely suspects in a murder investigation. I am sure they must have logs of their personnel entering and exiting the office as well as a log to record the entry time and exit time for visitors. That is SOP for even the most run down condominium in KL.

Next is to rule out accidental death. Accidental death would mean Teoh have to accidentally fallen out from one of the open windows which according to my experience in high rise office buildings cannot be opened easily and as proven by pictures showing a curious crowd peeking out from Plaza Masalam’s windows, the windows are the push out kind which leaves a really awkward horizontal space for anyone to accidentally fall out from. Unless the said person was not in the right mind which begs the question, was Teoh drugged?

I have been to Menara IBM where the security is unbelievably tight where to gain access to the lift also you need a special access card and your card will only take you to certain floors which you have been authorized to. I would like to believe that MACC’s offices employ the same kind of security, especially considering the sensitive and high security nature of its business investigating corruption. But I have not been to the said Plaza, can anyone please make a visit to the Plaza Masalam and note the security features of the building from carpark to lobby to lift to offices?

According to the MACC, Teoh was last sleeping on a couch at around 6am. Can the MACC provide the said couch to conduct DNA testing to see whether Teoh was ever sleeping on any couch at all? Also MACC should now release all files related to the interrogation of Teoh.

I think doctor’s statement put pressure on Gerakan’s leadership . KTK came out with a statement AFTER dr’sstatement and went to the parents’ house to pay respect.

I think it is a strategy that can work pressuring from with the party but it is a difficult path and likely to be scolded by ardent and blind supporters of both sides.

    Gerakan Watcher,

Are u suggesting that a minister’s role is issuing statement which has no bearing on the eventual result and taking photo for publicity purpose are suffice to resolve this issue. That KPI minister already over stay his welcome. Any sensible person with little wisdom will not squat on the toilet bowl if he is not shitting. don’t deprive others opportunity and at the same time jeopardizing the momentum of reformation.

Pressure from within shall work? This is applicable only if u re facing sane and cultured leadership, not “stubborn stone with punctured brain” like KTK. He is exactly like the ancient scholars with a “closed mind” who only believe and act strictly according to manuscript with slice adaptation or revolutionary ability.

Chinese tend to place too much respect to so called intellects or people deemed in the hgiher hierarchy of society without questioning the sensibility of such behavior. Its time to change. Justin correctly pointed out Mao Zedong risen against the odd to liberalize China. Of course he also made a irreparable mistake that ignite the evil culture revolution. However, what is applicable to us here is the former part that could revolutionize a culture which is much align with the present society’s need.

    Dear Dr. Hsu,

I seek forgiveness from you if my last statement on the “BaNanas” hurt you in any way. Wrong is a wrong, and I am not offering any excuses for this. This is my sincere apology. I personally feel that my remarks have resulted in you taking a break from blogging, and I hope this break is just a temporary one, if not, it will be a huge loss to us. As Justin put it, I am still your ardent supporter where I found your stand, your view and your thinking are all very similar to mine, except for the political platform……I used to be on “Middle Ground” as well until the last 5 to 10 years or so, where things had terribly gone wrong,……Altantuya murder, Perak fiasco, death of Mr. Teoh Beng Hock

“Middle Ground” is okay if the systems could operate in impartial, transparent and full accountability manner where each component of the system involved can function without undue pressure or interference from those holding power.

I am sorry I can’t see this in Malaysia where every move or decision that these people make, I have no confidence in their genuineness and sincerity, but mainly for the purpose of continue holding to power that they cannot do without.

In such a circumstance, things will not be so bad if those in power observe certain level of morality where even if your superior demanding you to work certain thing which against your conscience, you will not do it. Can we see this happening? The answer is a big NO…Just visit Malaysia Today and you get what I mean…..

I have to thank cilipadi for his (or her?) insistent in stressing the importance of “morality”. Under severe corruption environment, if there is a bit of morality bone in them, things will not be so serious until like there is no more tomorrow….

“Middle Ground” is not the way to go to clear the mess our beloved country. Talk, talk and talk is not the way to change their mindsets ……as they still think they did no wrong.

It is your choice now, Dr. Hsu.

    Doc,

    Greetings from Gold Coast, QLD.

Many of us do understand your position and where you are coming from and respect you for that. But the dark forces of BN have gathered strength and have engulfed and extinguished many small and big flames.
You are surrounded by wet wood within Gerakan with people who are gutless to call a spade a spade. I think PR would more than welcome Generals like you to help fight the evil forces. I think your stepping over would send a thundering message to all that even ‘moderates’ are fed-up and can no longer tolerate the abuses. Let TBH’s untimely demise be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. The hard truth is BN cannot be changed but BN can be kicked out. And we all know that you do and can and should deliver the hardest kick to make sure that TBH’s death was not in vain.

kajang municipal councillor (Tan) who was abused by MACC saw Teoh at around 6 am. Tan was only released at 1.30pm which is the same time when the janitor saw Teoh’s body. Is the timing a coincidence?

observe the torn pants and RPK’s reconstruction of the events which led to his death. This is consistent.

Based on above, I am inclined to beleive that Teoh was under the custody of MACC until his death. The likely cause: a botched interrogration by over zealous officers to please the grand master.

    Justin,

    ROCKET? You mean DAP?

My observation on defection of ex-BN Chinese Malaysian politicians is that they mostly jump to PKR. Examples of these politicians are like Tan Yee Kew, Chua Jui Meng, both former MCA, and Tan Tee Kwong, former Gerakan jumped to PKR. Even rumour of Huan Cheng Guan, a Gerakan member, joining PKR.

My question is, why not DAP but PKR? My reasoning for this is that, these ex-BN politicians had the perception that DAP is a ‘Chinese’ party, not a ‘multiracial’ party. I am not sure whether Dr. Hsu agrees with me on this, but it is understandable that these people have such perception. Their way of looking at things are still very much influenced by Umno’s propaganda that paint DAP as one Chinese party, much so, they had been in the so-called ‘BN Family’ for far too long. If they had been going through training under BTN, then that confirms that my reasoning hold water.

To me, DAP is a true blue MULTIRACIAL party, compared to PKR. This is evidenced in Tunku Aziz, a well respected personnel, joined DAP. Even RPK and Haris Ibrahim if I am not wrong, intend to join DAP if they make up their minds to join politics. The justification for joining DAP is very simple, DAP is a truly MULTIRACIAL party to them, and of course to me, since its formation.

Comparing Gerakan to DAP, they are just the opposite. Gerakan’s ideology of multiracial is dead since Lim Chong Eu decided to join BN, and the rest, is history.

It is important for DAP, if they want to go far, to work hard promoting this image of MULTIRACIAL to all, especially to fellow non-Chinese Malaysians. They are just not working hard enough to achieve this. This is the direction they need to take, as far as I am concerned, and Dr. Hsu can play an important role in this, if he is willing, of course.

First they went against PAS in Perak and created disorder and seized power with the help of 2 PKR and 1DAP clowns

With the crisis in Selangor between PKR and DAP they saw an opportunity to wreak havoc and create mistrust and poor DAP MPs got the most of it…and in the midst of it TBH had to die.

With the death, Azmin and Wee have both kept very quiet lately, perhaps they have learnt their lesson.

In terms of psywar, Pakatan members are green and often they would want to exalt themselves as to be seen fighting for their voters and take sniping shot at their Pakatan comrade. For those with experienced in such warfare they are on the lookout daily..where,when and how they can further aggravate the matter or seen giving a helping hand drectly or indirectly to the shooters in this case …Azmin and Wee and driving a wedge between them..between PKR and DAP.

Azmin and Wee must realise that members of PKR are former umno and some of them are planted, bought and as such feedback to Azmin that the DAPs MPs not doing the right things struck his mind and made him and later Wee to speak out.

At that moment of time UMNO took the opportunity to strike and hopefully undermining the DAPs MPs and destabilize the state government…and they struck through their security apparatus….hopefully with a state in chaos and ending in another Perak.

Sometimes politician do not think well when receiving feedback from the ground. They hear and listen without understanding and see without knowing what they see or saw. They are blinded by pride and poor DAPs MPs have to pay a price.?

In political warfare established parties in this case umno have a unit for the purpose of collecting information, collating or assembling the information and later turning it into intelligence for purposes of execution of the required action suitable to that particular event. This is the psywar section in the SB doing their dirty work.

Unless Pakatan has such a unit and with trained and qualified personnel, it is hard to gauge what umno would do next.

Look at MCA and Gerakan, their personnel are very careful and selective in their comments so as not to allow anyone to take advantage of what was said.

All the while, whatever were said or any risen grievances within the Pakatan these few months back, BN has taken advantage and a benefit to them.

On TBH death the non malay component party of BN have spoken up and even suggested for a Royal commission. Here it is an opportunity for the Pakatan to strike BN in particular against MCA and Gerakan to further alineate the chinese from these two parties.

Make this issue a highly political one and question the integrity of Gerakan and MCA for speaking up.

I am sure they know how to do it..

    Justin,

You can be famous if you can wait for Dr. Hsu made up his mind to join DAP. Join at the same time with him, better still, as his right hand man, hahaha. So, you have to convince him to join DAP first.

Do you still remember my observation of Penangite in relation to Gerakan, of which romerz praised me for that, 😀 ? Well, being a faithful to this forum, I can feel he is very much emotionally attached with Gerakan. Emotional until such an extend of “emotional feeling override mindful thought”, never give up kind of feeling though he is mindful of the fact that Gerakan’s game is over, Gerakan is dead. If my reading is correct, I am quite surprised that Dr. Hsu being a medical doctor has such strong emotional feeling attached with his “patient”. From what I know, a doctor should not has such strong emotional feeling on his patients, as this will affect his professional judgment on what diagnosis he needs to apply on his patients.

This, I believe, is what Dr. Hsu’s dilemma. To leave or not to leave Gerakan.

So, Justin, you have to help our good doctor here to cross two barriers first. First, to convince him to leave, then 2nd, to convince him to join DAP with you.

To me, Dr. Hsu has applied wrong treatment on his patient, Gerakan. Gerakan is already terminally ill. It is better to let Gerakan to RIP, by switching off life supporting machines hook to it….It is better let one dies peacefully, not dies in suffering.

I went back to my 900 articles in this blogs, and found none in praise of UMNO and BN. even for Gerakan, I had been the most ciritical in my write up.

In other words, I am the opposition in Gerakan and I voice out the views of civil society inside Gerakan.

It has, despite me being the opposition inside, given me a platform for my voice to be heard.

Pls note that I am not seeking positions nor kangdao inside. So what is so wrong to be the opposition inside? Being the oppostion inside, you can virtually guarantee no one would offer you anything except enmity. Its role is more or less same as opposition voice outside.

Take Myanmar as an example, what is wrong for AUng San Su CHyi to remain in mynamar and voice out instead of going out of the country to voice out. Her voice became the conscience of the nation and the junta had no choice but to jail her. Myanmar the nation is not at fault, it is the junta government that she is fighting against.

That is why she came back to Myanmar to be the oppostion voice instead of staying in the West.

Although I am no Aung San, my role inside is similar to that of her inside her country. DO i need to migrate to other country if I do not agree with the policies of Malaysian Govenrment? If that is the case, most of you would have to pack and go and voice out from outside the country.

What is wrong to be the opposition inside trying to right a wrong, trying to get abck the ideology? Being the thorn inside, am I not causing even more pain then most of you outside of the party? At least, they are wary of me at meetings and scared that I might influence others to think like me.

Most of those who quit their parties and join PKR are aiming for MP and ministers’ positions again; like Dr Tan Kee Kwong, he is eyeing a MP position in Pakatan, and so is Chua Jui Ming, he might be minister again if Pakatan wins the next election, which is highly likely..There will be more of these career politicians crossing over who had no more chance to become MPs except under Pakatan’s.

Even if I quit the party, i will not join these parties since i am not a politician seeking position.

I am not a politician so what is so important that I need to go out and voice out? Why can’t I voice out inside Gerakan as an opposition voice in Gerakan? If they cannot tolerate me anymore, they can always expel me just like Myanmar putting AUng sun under house arrest.

Further, it is a sort of loud speaker and enabled my opposition views to be heard louder , as someone mentioned above. If i am just a ordinary blogger, my views will never even be heard except perhaps the few hundreds that might visit my blog. NOw, At least, my views are picked up by journalists and other electronic media like MT, MI and malaysiakini. The chance to voice out my views are higher and the change of influencing for change is higher, even though it may still have very little effects.. It is nonetheless a louder voice than without a loudspeaker.

I am sick of having to defend my opposition role, especially letting everyone including my enemies inside BN, Gerakan, and UMNo know what I am up to. They can read me like an open book.

Dont you think the most happy people will be SBs and UMNOs and UMNO linked eunuch forces inside to see the opposition voice inside one of the component parties be silenced.

Many friends have told me to carry on the role of opposition inside, until such a day, when they can not tolerate anymore to expel me, or ISA me (ISA is very likely to be repealed, from a very reliable source), or push me down a high rise building….

As I said, I will take a break. But I will be pushing for a royal commission of enquiry for this case in my own little heretic way…….

You are a man of caliber and being in Gerakan, others may see it as a waste of your talent as such criticism thrown at you to leave Gerakan ..where you can contribute meaningfully in Pakatan. Take these criticism as a praise not an insult as such.

Your lone voice yes it is a thorn and good to fight from inside but I wonder how many would listen to you.

Your fight to bring back the good olden days is commendable but one hell of a tough job.

    Dr Hsu,

I am happy to know you being the Gerakan member shed tears and willing to fight for this justice. I do hope all UMNO members can learn like you…..Like Michael Jackson’s one of the song …..” Man in the mirror”. Hope all will look into the mirror and change ourselves first before we want to change the world.

Whatever happen to TBH, I think no one is giving him any chance or alternatives. Death is the only choice available to him. If there was a foul play in his death, the killer did not give him any choice. If he jump and plunge to his death, obviously he had so much pressure from all sides until he took his life. If this is so, MACC is still the one responsible for it. Why a witness die in your custody? Why no protection to the witness? Is MACC just want to get their job done while ignoring the witness’s safety and state of mind after testifying?

For me, foul play or suicide, MACC got to be responsible. No matter how MACC explained.

    Dr Hsu,

I understand your view but I suppose there are commentators who wish you could apply yourself more productively on the outside instead of from the inside.

Since you mentioned Aung San Suu Kyi, I came across this item from a blog by G Krishnan (Imagine) which has relevance to us all

    +++

No matter how much Umno tries to project an image of itself other than one of a big bully, sceptics are far from impressed. In one form or another, most sceptics believe that Umno is the personification of the principle that “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Closely related to this is the saying that “unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it.”

I sympathise with these critics that for years, we’ve had to endure episode after episode of the unrelenting arrogance and authoritarianism of Umno. And to many of these critics, Umno has become so intoxicated with power – power over its subservient BN co-conspirators, power over its internal critics, power over controlling the judiciary, the police, and the civil service – that it has long been corrupted.

Again, if one simply looks closely as how Umno yields power, it’s not hard to see that the years of monopoly on power it has had has allowed it to practically assume that it is preordained or part of some natural law of the universe for Umno to govern the country. For many, this is simply further evidence of how power has corrupted Umno and the mindset of its cabal.

But the great warrior of democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, has it absolutely correct that “it is not power that corrupts, but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it, and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.”

This is why I think you can expect two trends to become increasing palpable in the months to come. First, Umno will become progressively desperate – especially as it increasingly fears an erosion of its credibility – to hold on to its power. I am by no means suggesting that this desperation is sure to result in a sudden reverting to the use of draconian measures and clamp downs on the opposition that was reminiscent, for example, during Operation Lalang. Of course it will try the gimmicks – such as the so-called liberalisation measures and other ‘sweeteners’ they’ll try to feed us. But despite such petty gimmicks, there have been clear signs of this fear of losing power in Umno political machinery – which, in turn, has led to some obvious abuses of power and political manipulation. It should not come as a least bit of a surprise to anyone that if the pressure on Umno increases further, there will be more fear within the Umno inner circle and the fear that perhaps its days may be numbered.

Not unlike the Burmese military junta, which persists because of its own fear of losing power, our civilian junta persists with the disguise of the rule of law. But when that disguise gets exposed – from time to time – as now through the abuses of the police, the control of the government media, the abuses of the MACC, the manipulation of the judiciary and such – Umno shall revert to more intense propaganda and actions.

Second, we will see more of the same from the other BN parties; that is, a deafening silence about the path Umno is putting the country on. That is because they are themselves gripped with a fear – through the patronage system – of Umno. For this reason, they are incapable of unshackling themselves from their enslavement to Umno.

And both these factors, unfortunately, could spell more tough times for the rakyat.

But as Suu Kyi has said, for justice to prevail, the people must refuse to let fear dictate their actions. For this reason, the only way to bring the rule of law back into how we govern ourselves is not to allow our fear of Umno to override us. Let us not be misguided by the foolishness – and yes, fear – of some who say such things as “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.” Some people consider this approach to be pragmatic.

Actually, it is not pragmatism; such a view is merely the rationalisation of the fear that these people are experiencing. It is precisely the kind of living in “fear of the scourge of power” which also corrupts those of us who have to suffer under Umno’s reign of oppression. The obvious example of this is the other BN parties – and those among us – who sheepishly aid and abate Umno.

For us all to live freely, we need to live without fear of Umno.

    * That’s why the career politicians from BN will rather join PKR for a second bite at the cherry.

    2) * DAP is Social Democratic constitutionally.

Change from within can only materialize if your opponents (target) are civilize and their thought resonance with yours to certain degree. Otherwise its destined to hit the dead lock. Gandhi succeeded because his opponent was the British and not Stalin. Else, he will only be best remembered as a hero who failed in his mission. Similarly, if Mao Zedong had adopted the change from within strategy by joining Kuomintang, will the present China exists?

Just look at the current scenario in this country. Is there any positive changes took place. At best, there are only nice packaging rather than substance. There are more violent inflicted upon the civilians and opposition by MACC and PDRM. More iron fist crippling onto the freedom of speech. A glaring example being Florence Looi of NTV7. The power that be only interested painting a rosy picture of everything in this country and KPI minister and the like busy singing praises trumpeting the voidable openness initiated by the non performing PM. So, do we call this progress or improvement?

As Klm said, we want to put Gerakan & MCA into sleep or at least coma. We do not need all these communal base political parties that are akin to parasites. worst still they are drumming the echo and disguise as the Champion of the Chinese community. As long as there are lesser and lesser communal base component parties in BN, UMNO will die naturally as they will not able practice the divide and rule strategy.

For the first time..what I read Dr.Hsu said sound logical and smart.
He has a chance to mix with a pack of monkies ans snakes……be elected by those animals…and his mission and passion is the same like all of us…OUTSIDE the cave.
He is not disguising himself….and everyone in UMNO and Gerakan knows he is against those weird buggers.
Willing to be insulted…proving nothing to gain…not interested in politics too…yet be in the cave with the monkies and snakes.
    Dr.Hsu is one hell of a man..doing a mission impossible…tough tough job.
Usually…..I picture such a man as one like Lim Kit Siang…fighting for a mission…to free Malaysians.
But when I put LKS and Doc’s personality and compare…it is like a durian and a potato……..cannot compare….impossible to travel the same road.
LKS is like a durian…tough and straight forward.
Doc is like a potato…can be used for so many ways. You can even carve different figures with a potato.
So we can say….LKS is one track minded simple man.
Doc is versatile and much smarter.
Going back to read his latest message again…it makes me feel like a bloody fool to be on the OUTSIDE..when I should also join MCA and shout from the INSIDE.
This is something for all to ponder!!!…
    Join UMNO and BN…shout from INSIDE…and vote against..like Dr.Hsu.
Come on….join MCA..Gerakan…MIC..and let your voices be heard….how terribly scare those those monkies and snakes will become.
hhhhhmmm…Who knows….Chua Jui Meng and Dr.Tan Kee Kwong are exactly what Doc Hsu.. described ..yet..they maybe… also shouting for from INSIDE DAP and keDAILan…to support MCA??
It is enlightening…yet confusing..yet difficult to understand…yet so easy to understand…what Dr.Hsu is trying to do.
All my life..I try calling a spade …a spade…for or against….and travel a straight road…and only move away ..to avoid trouble.
I have never seen a man sacrificing himself like Dr.Hsu….except seeing fiction movies…like Indiana Jones…asking for trouble…when no trouble seeks him.

I think you shouldn’t prejudge Chua Jui Meng’s intention in joining PKR. I was there at the function where he gave his speech and he sounded sincere in wanting to strengthen a 2 party system. If you miss it, you can also read it in malaysiakini:
    http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/108786

At Chua’s age (>70) I give him the benefit of the doubt that he wants to build a better Malaysia than chasing after personal ambition. He is joining at a time when PR is in turmoil and the general election is far away. He is well aware that the road ahead may be tough for him.

Of course we are entitled to own views but it’s easy to fall into the trap of prejudging without considering the facts first.

    Dr Hsu,

Leaders are born to lead. They are a special breed of people to lead common folks like me. Whenever there are such people around, they would stand out from the crowd. It is a natural process of social governance.

These high calibred incumbents rightly should be given the authority to lead. When such people join a political party, we should expect them to have ambitions for something greater. In fact if they don’t, then the party should even offer them such positions of authority to serve the people.

If Chua Jui Meng were to just join PKR without any agenda, then something must be very wrong.

What I am trying to get across is that if a person is endowed with talents and leadership qualities, this person infact has a duty to contribute to society more than an average person. Not doing so will be a breach of nature’s gift to that person.

It’s typical of Umno. For any problem they face, turn it into a racial issue. Issue warnings not to raise ethnic tension when they are the very ones doing it They think that when they ratchet up the racial tension, people will accept injustice as a lesser evil for racial strife.

But the same old formula doesn’t work now. Teoh death has incited multi-racial rage. The gathering at Kelana Jaya stadium was multi-racial. His funeral was attended by a multi-racial crowd. Umno goons think that Malaysians can forever be led by the primal instincts of race and religion.

The people are too smart for them now and will not fall into the racial trap.

    Dr. Hsu,

After the “brickbats”, I am certain that you are not a “politician” and you have no ambition to become one, and you decided to stay on with Gerakan as a platform to voice your views, or in your own terms, an opposition within, and “loud speaker”.

So, probably you will stay on with Gerakan until the self-set time frame is up which most likely coincide with Gerakan’s last day.

That’s fine, as far as I am concerned thought I am not in agreement with your plan.

You also commented, if you quit Gerakan, you will not join other party like what Chua Jui Meng and Tan Tee Kwong did because you have no ambition whatsoever to seek for “kangdao”.

My question is, if you can remain not as politician at Gerakan as your platform to voice up, why can’t you remain not as a politician at DAP as your platform to voice up? Is is because DAP is not as multiracial ideology as Gerakan?

This is what I don’t agree with you here by saying you would not join other party if you quit Gerakan. Of course you can argue that you can continue to voice up through your blog here, but what different is that if you quit Gerakan now or later?

Your decision of not joining other party after foregoing Gerakan is a waste of your talent…..

The death of Beng Hock is being played out by Umno and its tools and machinery to play up racial sentiments. They are the experts in this field, not governing the country. Maybe grassroots buy your views, definitely not those tops addicting with powers.

I can understand why you still cling to the noble ideals of an equal and just society for all Malaysians. And why you may not want to join another political party.

Chua Jui Meng and Tan Kee Kwong are more the pragmatic political animals ; they have good reasons to change parties. Having met both personally, I find them to be decent men. So was Ong Ka Ting. There are good people in every political party, bad ones as well. It is a microcosm of our society.

However, I see you as an idealist with a social conscience but not as a politician. Changing parties is too much like betraying oneself. So, Dr Hsu, stay true to yourself and your conscience.
