An experienced private lawyer was appointed to lead the govenrment team in the Inquest for the late Teoh Beng Hock.
Although this appointment is provided for in the Criminal Procedure COde, it is indeed rare for a private lawyer to lead a government team.
We do not know the actual reasons behind this appointment. It may be that the government wants to project that it has nothing to hide and thus it wants a neutral person to take cahrge. Well, if that is the intention, it is certainly welcome.
But could it be that the AG chamber has no expertise that will allow the inquest court to find out the truth? If that is the case, then could it be that the mediocrity that i have written so often about have affected our legal services as well?
Imagine a scenerio that all services of a country deteriorate to the extent of mediocrity.
Visulaise a country where prosecution cannot build solid cases against criminals so all the criminals that police arrested will be set free; doctors in hospitals cannot diagnose correctly or adopt the correct procedure to treat patients so the mortality rate increases; teachers cannot teach properly; engineers cannot build structure safely resulting in collapses of roads and bridges,; pilots cannot fly planes properly resulting in crashes…. What will happen to that country?
I dare not even think about it….

This article in Malaysiakini seems to confirm my worst fear even though when I wrote the above, I had not read the article yet…. Read this article on our Health DG’s reaction about some of his doctors’ ‘expert’ management of H1N1 cases here . I will also paraphrase part of it here:
However, the girl, who appeared to be in her early 20s, said that when she called at the hospital last week, the doctors advised her to stay home although she had been down with the flu for over a week.
DG startled by revelations
She also claimed that without examining her, the doctors concluded that she only had fever.
“I have been having the flu and I am still sick. The doctors say it is nothing but it is worrying me,” said the girl.
To which Ismail exclaimed “Oh no, that’s terrible …that means you still have to go back to hospital and get the throat swab done.They cannot refuse to see you just because they have seen you before. Tell them you are not better and want to know for sure whether or not you have H1N1.”
He said the girl has every right to see the doctor again as she has already entered the second stage of the flu.

Dr. Hsu. You forgot to mention the story related by our famous Dr. Chua Soi Lek when he was Health Minister and reported in the Chinese newspapers.
The story was about a doctor in a govt hospital. Every time this doctor run into a problem during surgery, he will run away and pray.
Nothing shocks me anymore. You die if you go to a govt hospital.
It is not mediocre. It is at the level of useless.

Provide the police with info on crime prone areas as advised by the government. What a sick joke.
Inform the hospital on the situation of H1N1 in your area?
Identify the poor and the needy and inform the welfare dept?
Seek out areas where there are no racial integration?

You see what kind of leaders we have. They can just exclaimed shock and awe after fatal incidents had happened but did they really go further to sort out the problems to prevent further incidences from happening. Yes, initially they tell all the cock and bull story that they will investigate this and that nonsense but after a while everything is back to normal.
We have the police, the macc and the judiciary, just like any other countries but our systems of implementation differs and the people in the corridor of power are immune from the law when they are suspected of any wrong doings.
The only way to survive in this country is to look after yourself and do not depend on the government to look after you as they are busy counting the money that they had accumulated.

Most of them can still read simple English.
In the old days, when there was a medical conference or drug launch, you can see doctors from all ages , ranging from young to old asking pertinent questions. Now, those who asked questions are often the 40plus and above. Either the younger ones are too reticent to ask questions or they are not confident of thier english. But if you do not ask questions to clear your doubts , how are you going to learn about the problems and drugs? Just memorising the facts from Books?
But there are also doctors graduated from overseas universities, and these are the more vocal group.
It is really a pity. Hospitals in UK and AUstralia, there are so many Malaysian doctors working as consultants and registrars… In the States not many, because fewer Malaysians go to the States and Canada to study medicine. But in my daughter’s hospital in Adelaide, almost half of the doctors are Malaysians or related to Malaysians.

Ah! Then how can these govt hospital doctors gain additional knowledge when technical seminars are in English. They are mostly from local U. They only know what they were taught in BM. The rest, teacher did’nt teach, so dont know.
The H1NI is new. So teacher did not teach. No wonder.

haven’t you read of the marks given on compassionated grounds based on race ?.
That was what I heard some years ago when most of the trainee doctors who failed were of a particular race.

I have a couple of friends, dentists and doctors in orivate practices who keep abreast with new diseases and ailments attending seminars and forums participated by the same from all over the world (usually held in Singapore). Sometimes they go overseas to update with the latest technology and knowledge.
But I gather those who are not proficient in the English language would not go and miss the chance and surely there are many of these who stick to what they had learnt in medical college.
Well, viruses and bacteria also attend body schools and evolve while the backward doctors retain their cobweb knowledge. No wonder cannot fight with viruses and bacteria.

A warm welcome to reality. I am afraid that what you say might become of Malaysia, where mediocrity rules the roost is already here, not just on the way.
Dr. it is all around us, and we have to deal with it everyday.
Another reality is that so long as the present government continue to run this country, there is no chance of overcoming this mediocrity. After 4 decades, after 22 years and more than 100 days
do we see any light anywhere in this tunnel that you and I live in?
The unelected PM just mentioned that there is no need for demonstration because the government has agreed to review the ISA.Is that what the people of Malaysia want? A review? We want the ISA to be abolished, not reviewed. We want a RCI for the death of TBH, what do we get? This government is just not interested in what you and I or the people want. Period.
So mediocrity will be the everyday standard which will have to live with….until this government is out. Do you really see it any other way?

Tan Hock Chuan is like acting more like a “defendant lawyer”, instead of an officer of the coroner’s court assisting in determining the cause of Teoh’s death. Shouldn’t the inquest set-up to ensure no stone unturned so to find out how Teoh dies? Why should the scope of examination by forensic experts be limited by the police? How to ensure no stone unturned then? Experts have no expertise?
