The essence of humanity

I don’t eat beef, because many generations ago, my ancestors were farmers, and they needed their cows to help them plough the fields in order to plant crops. So they treated their cows well, since no one in their right mind would harm anything that would help sustain their livelihood.

So it became a sort of family culture and  for many generations until mine, even though we are no more farmers, we do not eat beef.

But  although I do not eat beef, I do not object to my friends eating beef around me. I do not object to beef being sold in markets or supermarkets and cows being slaughtered for their meat. Because I know that I am only one of many people who  live here, and being so, I need to respect the custom and habits of the many others who eat beef.

I do not smoke. To tell you the truth,  I really hate the notion of my lungs inhaling the various carcinogens present in second-hand smoke.

Nevertheless, whenever I see people smoking, I do not approach them and ask them to stop. The only exception was when my expert opinion was sought and as a doctor, i will give them the  advice that doctors all over the world would do: quit smoking because smoking is bad for health.

But other than that, whenever I see people smoking, I just move as far away as possible, without making a fuss asking them to stop. This is to respect their right to choose. If it is their choice to inhale bad substances, who am I to stop them except when my counsel is sought?

Even though the second-hand smokes are bad for my lungs and body, I do not object but just quietly move away. This is tolerance.

Similarly, I respect and tolerate other people’s dress codes and other people’s faiths.

In this world where there are people having different habits, customs and faiths, respect and tolerance are essential.

When I respect and tolerate the customs and habits of other people, I expect others to reciprocate that respect and tolerance towards me.

I eat pork, so I expect other people to respect my right  to eat pork just as I respect their right to eat beef. Of course, being a sensible person who cares how others feel, I normally do not eat pork in front of those countrymen of mine that belong to a certain faith. This is called mutual respect.

I drink occasionally. I am not a compulsive or heavy drinker . In fact, I do not particularly like to drink alcoholic drinks.  I normally would prefer a nice cup of hot steamy coffee; but when occasions warrant, I am game to having a few glasses of wines or a few cans of beer.

But I understand a lot of people like to drink.    Most of these drinkers are not the heavy and compulsive type. For the latter groups, of course, they might become a menace on the road, if their blood alcoholic contents go up to a certain level. For these people who may become a menace , there is already a law to deal with them and they can be fined heftily for drink driving.

For the majority who drink, they are responsible people, and most do not really exceed their own limits.

Since there are people who drink, there is a  demand for these drinks to be sold. Just like when there are people who eat beef, there will be a demand for beef to be sold.

There will therefore be businesses that cater to these needs. After-all, businessmen’s business is to make money, and if there is a demand, they will supply to fulfill that demand in order for their businesses to grow.

If there are people who eat beef, we must allow beef to be sold, since this is the basic right of the beef eaters to have access to beef whenever they feel like eating beef.

Similarly, if there are beer drinkers, then we must allow beer to be sold, since this is their right to have access to these drinks whenever they feel like drinking.

By all means, punish those whose religions do not allow them to drink such drinks but they are caught drinking them.

If your child is caught stealing his friends’ pocket money in schools, by all means punish your child but you cannot punish those who bring pocket money to schools.

It is up to you to teach your child to curb his temptation to steal. The fault is not the money which tempted your child. The fault is in his succumbing to his temptations.

Therefore, the onus is on the relevant authority to monitor, catch, punish and educate those who disobey the rules of their religions; those whose faiths disallow them to drink alcohol, but they succumb to their own temptations to drink.

So the recent call by PAS in Selangor to ban shops like 7-eleven from selling beers is totally illogical. It is like asking all schools to ban students from bringing pocket money to schools, because a few students were caught stealing.

It is like banning women from the streets because of a few guys who could not curb their own temptations and committed rape.

In a multicultural and multi-religious country , mutual respect and tolerance are the basis to build trust and peaceful co-existence.

But before people can respect and tolerate you, you must be prepared to give the same respect and tolerance to them first.

That is the essence of humanity.

    Dr Hsu,

police are saying going to charge GMI for illegal demostration. Today, i read an article in malaysiakini. A person named “Raymond” ask why gerakan, a BN component party is not charge for illegal demo? Just see:
    http://malaysiakini.com/news/110173

The people joining the GMI peaceful gathering were arrested for “illegal gathering” because they did not get police permit. Now the police say want to charge Pakatan Rakyat leaders for supporting the gathering.

But what about the gathering by Gerakan to submit a memorandum to the King one day before the GMI gathering? They also did not have police permit but why the police never say they want to charge party leader Koh Tsu Koon and the organiser of the march? Is it because Gerakan is from Barisan Nasional and Koh is a minister?

I don’t eat beef as well, Dr. Hsu 😀

We can hold tight with what we believe, but we don’t impose what we believe onto others, simply because what we believe maybe wrong or may not be suitable to others’ culture and belief. If you are a religious person, and wish to profess what you believe to others, you can go ahead to do that, but at the end of the day, you can’t force others to adopt what you professed.

I read some comments that Buddhism disallowed Buddhist to drink alcohol. I believe this is not true.

I leave it to Justin Choo to elaborate this, if he is willing.

A very well-written essay, Pity most of our political leaders lack the ability like Dr. Hsu to think through hard issues and articulate in essays for common people and the public to learn and digest. Tolerance is key in our work places, in schools, in institutions, in communities. Our world is so diverse and we should accommodate other people’s tastes and view-points. Learn to agree to disagree. My favorite phrase: “there is more than one way to skin the cat”. PAS intolerance is a shame. High time, they realize that not everyone wish their lives to be governed by so many do’s and dont’s. Leave us non-muslims alone man! I gamble and drink, but all done in moderation. I visit 4D shops regularly whenever I have my “dreams” or to mark certain occasions (when I feel lucky). If I strike lottery, I am sure I will contribute lots back to my family, back to society and charities. I love my beer and whisky. When I drink, I feel good towards everyone. So please leave me alone.

I agree with you 100 % on this matter, however the problem lies if both parties are stubborn & refuse to back down, lest they be said to be “giving too much face “.
Let me elaborate, both parties feel that they are being taken advantage and both feel “enough is enough”. They can only see what they want too see, that they are the victims.
I think humans’ by nature are selfish. Anything that has an impact on their lives, they go ballistic and cannot be reasoned or all logic goes out the window.
To be fair, both parties have their little devil advocates, that just pour fuel to the fire.
Also, it doesn’t help when they have representatives that don’t use their brain before they act or open their mouth. I am especially disappointed with 2 Pakatan members making the news recently. There must be a better way to go about it, tactfully -knowing issues like this could potentially be turn into a race or religion matter.

The sad news is that those people who are intolerant of others’ views and practices are not reading it. Even if they read it, their little minds cannot comprehend what is “tolerance and respect” which are the epitomes of wise and cultured people.

These people simply do not possess the cultured mentality of civilized humans: “the essence of humanity”. Very sad.

Hassan Ali is a saboteur – he works really well for UMNO, and in Najib’s bid to get back Selangor, I believe this fella is the first lure to break PR.
All this noise over the beer is not about the beer – it’s about causing dissent, allowing the Utusan fear-mongers to scream about cowardice, etc and stir up discontent against PR. That’s why no objections by Gerakan or MIC or MCA about Utusan’s writings.
So.while you write well and truly in this article, as u usually do – the real message is: Najib wants Selangor back, by hook or by crook, not by the book!

I do not eat pork becoz I am a Muslim.
My chinese godsis eats pork, occasionaly as
shes a christian, her religion allows it.

When we go outing, etc, i do not tell her dont order pork related dish. Its her choice.

I sit in a table with her to eat, she eats her
    meal & i eat mine.

In Islam, its not wrong to be in the same table
    to eat pork.

But in Islam as per Shafie school of thoughts,
it says cannot be in the same table with
    those drinking alcohol.

Its simple, its a choice of a Muslim to get up,
to excuse & leave politely, but never tell other non-Muslims “you cannot drink ah now…becoz
    i m a Muslim”.

My chinese godsis wears real sexy clothes when we go outing, string & shorts. Its her choice.
    I wear tudung and t-shirt & jeans.
But I do not tell her, ” you dont wear sexy ah…
u have a Muslim beside you”.

To me, be honest & humble to yourself in what religion you are, arespect other religions in whatever form & colour they come, whatever clothing and beliefs they hold.

If we Malaysians cannot hold onto this,
    Malaysia is heading towards disasater…soon.

I beg to differ on the part regarding smoking.

Suppose a person and his family are having a meal in a restaurant. A short while later, diners at the next table start smoking and cigarettes smoke are blown towards the direction of this person and his family. If diners at the next table have a right to smoke, what about the rights of this person and his family to breathe clean air?

As you mentioned, there is a law to deal with driving under the influence of alcohol but is there a law to deal with those who cause cancer arising from second hand smoke?

I am sure all non smokers have encountered many an occasion whereby their evenings out have been marred.

If we see the whole issue at its core, its actually Hassan Ali with support of xertain Selangor PAS leaders who are actually trying to create havoc on Pakat Rakyat and in turn, will allow UMNO-BN to do another Perak-style grab of power.

Najib has openly said this yesterday that he wanted Selangor back and so Hassan is trying to hand the state back to UMNO-BN on a plate and then he will be the next MB. Its very clearcut.

I stay in a condominium and lately some Malay guys working or studying in a nearby modern hospital will always smoke inside the lift even though there is a very clear sign saying no smoking in the lift. I told them its not good to smoke in the lift and further more, they are from the hospital who should promote cleaner living. Just imagine how stuffy and smokey it is inside the lift? I was shown a one kind face and they didnt care so much and carry on their smoking. Is this right? So they should not sell cigarettes in my area?

Atila, your eg. with regards to your godsis is a very good example. You do not impose your beliefs and your standards on your godsis.
Your Godsis on the other hand, she respects you will try her best not to offend you.

This is “give & take” but when one party insist on doing it their way all the time and it makes it very difficult for the other party accept, how to co-exist in harmony. It’s different when the other party readily accepts the terms without being forced to do so.

I am sure your godsis and you would not be able to go shopping together in peace if you bicker about everything from dressing to eating .

West world must make Islam bad in the eyes of all living things its spoken in Quran so we are not amazed one bit.

But in Quran it has mentioned of the rise in Islam before “Qiamat” and it has taken shape now.

I must touch here the truth (sorry for readers, if i can accept what West w agenda to Muslims w open mind, i hope the same from others),

Who has been the terrorist and why its must be skewed to Muslims?

We have developed a strong perception that anything from the West is true. We never filter

    Meng,
Yes partyly true, becoz in Malaysia the “fitnah, dengki, cemburu” is stigmatised rooted in Malay society from those Hang Tuah days. Read history.

Malay society still practices many culture that permits fitnah and dengki.

    UMNO encourages this Malay culture.

Islam is a way of life as Quran and Hadith.
Islam is not Malay. Malay is not Islam.
Islam is for all. UMNO dont preach this.

We have oppurtunist called Western media.
Every religion has squabbles internally bad
but Western media zoomed to bad only Islam.

Bush speaks too much of anti-Islam until one day Allah made him cannot speak in public.
    Have you seen that?

The most important thing is in Malaysia.

    Islam Melayu preached in UMNO…,
many dont want to be accepting such 6
whips rotan for drinking of that young lady in Pahang but KhirToyo get away with that
mansion and many more UMNO gotten away with rasuah, etc.

Even amongst Muslims in Malaysia, some current Muslims do not understand Islam becoz it is UMNO’s agenda to drift as much Muslims from Islam.

You got some Muslims (too drifted from Islam) do not understand what is “usra & tahlil”, some went to report to the police and said extremist.
Is it extreme to gather Muslims to doa for the dead and pray blessing for the living and pray god enlighten us from Ah1n1?

So, some Muslims are ok for other religions to pray for the dead but this group Muslims cannot ok with Muslims doa for the dead and alive.
Imagine, they went to the police.

This is the quality of Islam preached and wanted by UMNO, they want us ignorant and drifted

That is why it is important to have environmentally clean engines for cars and buses, and that these engines must be serviced regularly… We have Puspacom , RTD etc to monitor the exhaust levels emitted from buses , cars and lorries, but the effectiveness of these measures depend on the efficiency of these departments as wellas whether any corruption is involved..

Worse, year in and year out, we have haze .. and the API during hazy periods very often touches on ‘unhealthy’ or ‘bad’ levels. What can we laymen do? Stop breathing? we can’t walk away from these because we need the air to breath.

But tell this to ordinary folks who are more interested in ‘cari makan’, they will sneer at our concern about environment. To them , themost important is their livelihood. Try telling a taxi driver that his car emits black smoke, and you will most probably get a lengthy lecture on how difficult it is for them to survive in KL, and how much repair bills they incur every month.

SO until and unless the income levels of ordinary citizens have gone up, most of these people will not bother much about air pollution.

    annoyed,

I hope you allow me to reproduce one of the comment in the MI (I presumed you are the same ‘annoyed’ in this case), which I found it very meaningful,

Atila, what’s your view in this?

Those non-Muslims “not from the religion of the sky” will always believe 900% western media.

I don’t believe in an impotent god from the sky, neither will I accept 100% of the western media.
Rapes, murder and plunder..all under the name of god. If there is a god he is not man’s best friend, compare with a dog… an animal ..a truely mans best friend. The dog will never ask me to rape, kill or murder???

Western media…read but find out answers why. Take for example you quoted a number of times on 911. But many believe what they see on CNN and in the media…inreality it is a time concussion explosive chargers that went off at each floor.

As for me It is an american plot. Just like Pearl Harbour they let the jap destroy their fleet just to get into 2nd war war. This was the answer they gave me through a friendly talk. Just imagine with the best resources in surveillance, the jap got through..???

US are good at finding excuses to invade national territory, same with Iraq, Vietnam and hopefully they will create an incident for the north korean and I hope they do..that will be the end of south korea.

In the case of PAS Selangor with Hassan, this guy is wasting no time to dismantle Pakatan as his agenda is the MB of Selangor. Do not forget that he was the link man for the secret talk with Toyol after the 308 and for bn to lose Selangor is beyond comprehension.

So, don’t be surprise of his current role play and let us not forget such a character in the next GE. We need to gather more of such kind in a master list and hang the list high for all to see.

That is clearly the failure of education….on pollution, not just rising the income will enable the people to realise the health hazards on pollution.

The government should be the first to be blamed. Enforcement is zero on buses spewing black smoke. Once in a blue moon they will check instead of consistency.

Secondly, public education is zero especially from the Mis-information ministry. that idiot is only interested in the trivial matters and preserving whatever that is impossible to preserve. The earth will eventually be destroyed anyway long after that idiot kicks the bucket.

Thirdly, the government is also not concerned about the environment by approving toxic waste producing industrial plants due to greed for $$$$$RM.

There will be more serious environmental problems including water supply in the decades ahead when water catchment area is getting polluted and reduced in numbers. And when industrial waste containing toxic reaches the rivers and reservoirs, then better start praying. Worse, a prolonged drought. You see, the government is good for nothing except thinking of snatching Selangor back into its fold. Pollution? Everything is polluted including politics.

There is no need to wait for GE13 as Najib and Muhyuddin has hinted PR will fall in Selangor. Hassan Ali will be the new MB as he will lead a group of ADUNs to join BN-UMNO and some Chinese Aduns will also join in.

So its goodbye PR in Selangor and soon Penang will go and finally Kedah but Kelantan will still be under Nik Aziz.

Thats the latest news from my reliable sources within UMNO.

So all those wayangs that happened to PR are well planned since GE12 and Hassan Ali is the head. PAS will never ever get my vote again.

“””A Muslim paid by the west will bomb a mosque. This is called traitor in a religion.””

This is not right. Currently in Iraq, Pakistan and Afgan the muslim themselves bomb the mosque without any direction from the west. These are the fight between the sunni and Shia muslim.

This war had been going on since the death of your prophet..on the selection of a successor. One group wanted Ali and other Bakar ( Am I right..may have got mixed ed up)

The countries with the most sunni like malaysia are the ones that are causing all the problems. ..Right or wrong.

Iran, lebanon and syria are shia and they are relatively peaceful in their country. Hardly find any mosque being bombed. Are shia better muslim???

Well malaysian malays support Iran, do you think for once Iran will look up to malaysia.??? They don’t give a damn esp during the sleepy PM’s time when he preached islam hadhari.

Majority of the sunni countries looked friendly with Iran but deep down they hate Iran…have been trying to get rid of Iran…. Saddam tried but failed.

Why is everyone so hot up about drinking beer or selling beer?
    ================================
Today, every one can enjoy a beer – Buddhist, Muslim, Christians and other religions. Before you condemn me for not respecting other people’s religions, hold your horse and read on.

Recently, I tried a beer with 0.0% alcohol in a Saudi (Islamic) restaurant in KL. It was “brewed” in Holland (not sure brew is the right word for 0.0% alchohol beer). It was actually very good and taste like a good German beer. The label also carried a German name – Bavaria (home of Oktoberfest).

One can enjoy the long cool drink and the bitter sweet taste of hops. And yet do not have to worry about sinning. Religions that forbid alcohol did not take into account the marvel of modern technology.

To each his/her own. So, with the availability of such product, alcohol content of beer now varies from 0.0% to about 12%, one can still enjoy the camaraderies of a beer drinking session without feeling left out or feeling guilty.

Here’s to 0.0% alcohol beer. Yam Seng! Cheers mate! 😮

This is another good comment that I would like to share over here,

written by Mohd Din Adam, August 10, 2009
It surprises me that the Muslims in Malaysia are incresingly insecure and defensive over every little thing that is deemed to be insulting to them. Why? If ONE person has done something wrong, prosecute that person… not ALL the non-Muslims. If Loke did something wrong, go for him, and not make in a national race issue. What’s wrong with you? Think and reason for a minute. And Utusan, we all know is used as a tool to “inflame” the Malays… It is sooo wrong and destructive.

When 2 Muslim magazine reporters secretly went to a Church to destroy their sacrement, and later wrote about it in their public magazine recently… The only politician from UMNO that spoke up against such an act was Khairy Jamaluddin. Where was every other Muslim “friend” from UMNO… who respects other people’s religion?? No where to be seen or heard. The Church to its credit did not say “OHHH, ALL MUSLIMS HATE US, LET US FIGHT THEM”… Instead, it only ask for the 2 reporters to be prosecuted according to the law. What a mature way to handle a problem. No need for public inflamatory remarks such as “patang di cabar”, “Penghina Islam kian berani” etc… it doesnt help the situation.

It pains me that this country is becoming the way it is. And when PM Najib doesnt criticise Utusan for such inflamatory articles as the one above… it just goes to show that Malaysia is no longer the Malaysia we know.

There are far too many write-ups in Utusan that leave very bad tastes and troubling right thinking Malaysians of all races and beliefs. Why can these people stoop so low …. I can’t imagine if I am in their shoes. Can’t they see for their own what’s right or wrong when do things? I am saddened with all these.

Another article in the MI titled “Umno bets on race appeal to bury Pakatan” where KTK did voice out,

“During the meeting, Gerakan president Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon highlighted a series of incendiary commentaries in the Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia and said he was troubled by the effect it was having on race relations.”

    But, DPM responded with,

“Responding to this, Muhyiddin, who is shaping up to be a hawk in the administration, justified the pitch taken by saying that Malays believe that Umno is weak and giving in too much to the demands of non-Malays.”

May I ask DPM, what are the demands of non-Malays that you deemed too much here? Are we demanding anything from you that you consider too much? If there is or are, the demands are actually from all Malaysians, not just the non-Malays.

KTK did the right thing here to voice out, but any follow-up action? Are you satisfied with DPM’s response? If yes, then you are just as bad. If no, then should you, as the head of Gerakan, suggests your party to pull out of BN?

Frankly, I think you should do that. In fact, all other parties should do that, and give BN all to Umno. In actual fact, you guys just warming your seats at such meetings, as I can see it.

DPM, are you not owing obligations to all Malaysians?

Please lah, how you people going to win my vote or other right thinking Malaysians?

    SICK, SICK, SICK 😦

It is very unfortunate that you only see the dark side of Islam and this has been the aspiration of the west to blackened the image of Islam to maximum from 1897+300years.

You only see from media and from the Malays UMNO so called Muslims in Malaysia, but you have not seen adn experiece the Muslims community the close knit in Australia Bosnia
USA UK and many parts of the world, this close knits are making the wester world Mega Worry.

As a Muslim after 9-11, we also have our own jihad as what the christians and jews have against us since 1000years ago.

    Meng,

    One is …
Islam Hadhari is the religion birth from PakLah to impress unipolar power. Bush complimented and supported PakLah over this Islam Hadhari.
You think compliments and supports come from unipolar power is FOC?

Majority Muslims in Malaysia rejected this, partly the fall of BN during GE2008 was due to the birth of this human made religion.

Projected 20-30years from now, if Islam Hadhari is not stopped you have two Islams in Malaysia:
    1. Islam as per Sunnah WalJamaah and 2. man made by PakLah. It is very unhealthy and this is the starting point of “perang saudara”.
Always remember Protestant vs Catholic in UK Ireland what happened hundreds of years until today.

At least PR came up and administration under Najib do no continue Islam Hadhari…for now.

This is one of the ways to destroy a country longterm.

Meng, you do not understand and you will never understand. Like i said before, the religion form the sky “islam jew christian” the differences is not settled from the days of Nabi Ibrahim until today.

For us Muslims, we know what will happen in the end of the day as mentioned in Quran.

In the month of Ramadhan, my duty to fulfill what is required by Allahswt. Sadly, UMNO has preached Ramadhan to destruction,
    Ramadhan=food food food.

Do you know what is a Sunni, Shia and Sufism?

If you understand the differences of the above, than you will also understand Christian also have many sects and Protestant and Catholics has been bloodshed with each other until today.

(how much western media make known this to the world? they in fact hide as much but they zoomed 900% on Muslims).

I just got back from Tarawikh prayer in Masjid Negeri Penang, a Shia & a Wahabbi was praying beside me. Malaysians Sunni do not kill them when they land in Malaysia.

Why are you only looking on the bad side of Islam from all sects?

Cant you see anything good? Why?

Becoz western media do not let you see the good part of Islam community unless
non-Muslimsstay in a Muslim community in UK USA Australia South Africa New Zealand Germany France Sweden Denmark etc…..self experience then one will know.

30 Juzuk in Al-Quran do not mention that Islam is for the Malays. Islam means the way of Life and it is for all races in this world.

When you go Haj / Umrah, during this peak season you can see 2-3million people on holy land Mecca from various race from all parts of the world. All shades of skin, all colours of clothings, etc.

I have experienced this twice, and all Muslims who went Umra / Haj will experience the same.

Everybody there pray according to his/her sects in mosques around Madina, Mecca and Jeddah.
This beatiful part is never told by western media to the world. They only drum and brainwash the Muslims bombs mosques, terrorists, etc.

    Atila,

I am not a Buddhist scholar and I have no answer to your question on the birth of galaxy & why it is expanding. Even scientists have no answer to that, and I leave it to these scientists to find out the answers.

Nevertheless, may I ask you, is it so important to find out the answer? I can guess your answer to this is the almighty God. But, if it is true, so what? We still cannot find lasting peace in this world. We don’t need to see elsewhere but just in Malaysia alone. The word “God” or “Allah” has created so much controversies, to the extent of who has the rights to use “Allah” in their prayers or publication. At the end of the day, my question is, what’s next?

As I said, I am not a Buddhist scholar, but I do understand that Buddha taught me to learn how to co-exist harmoniously with other co-inhabitants of this world, as they too have the rights of existence in this world, that includes fellow human beings, animals, insects, plants, other living things and I may add, spirits and ghosts.

As you commented, the galaxy keep on changing and expanding, that tells us that the universe is not static but keep on evolving from one form to another. I guess, that’s the reason why Buddha reminds us to us our wisdoms from time to time. Without wisdom, we may lost in oblivion and deviate from true teachings of our respective religions. That, we should avoid at all cost.

Supremacy of one religion to the other, or from one race to the other, is out of the question. It only reflects the inferior side our we human beings.
