Scholarships on Offer USJ.COM.MY is pleased to help publicise scholarship offer from a kind Mr Koon Yew Yin from Ipoh. Mr Koon’s offer write up is self explanatory and need no further explanation:

Scholarships for the needy

I wish to offer scholarships to 50 poor students for the next academic year to study finance and accountancy in University TAR, Kampar, Perak on the following conditions:-

1. Each student’s family income should not be more than Rm 2,000 per month.

2. Students will be selected more on the basis of their financial need and not merely on their academic achievement.

3. Each scholarship is worth Rm 20,000 which should be enough for each student to cover the cost for the first year foundation course and the first semester of the degree course in finance and accountancy until he or she secures the PTPTN loan. This Government loan is given to all students irrespective of race and financial position who are doing a recognised degree course.

4. Students who receive my financial aid do not require to pay back the money or work for me after they graduate. But I want them to promise me that they will help other poor students when they have graduated and are financially solvent.

U TAR takes in students in January and June every year. Students who are currently doing SPM can submit their applications to U TAR this October with their forecast results to start in January 2010.

Needy students who are currently doing SPM or have passed the SPM can submit their applications to me:

Koon Yew Yin,
27, Lengkok Harimau,
31400, Ipoh, Perak

From here, I further google him, and I found this article “The great Malaysian brain drain – Koon Yew Yin” in The Malaysian Insider–koon-yew-yin-

I thank you for allowing my request 😀

The generosity of Mr Koon Yew Yin has put many people to shame, especially the politicians that fight days and nights, in the name of religion, interests of their own race they represented, for the country’s sake, in the name of justice bla, bla, bla. But, still, the unfairness in distribution of scholarships to the deserving ones are still recurring year in year out.

Please read the article written by Mr Koon and see for yourselves what you politicians had been doing this is beloved country of us. If you can afford to donate million of RM for the political fund, can you do so for like what Mr Koon is doing? If you can afford to lose billion and billion of RM in mega-huge projects, why can’t you allocate a fraction of them to these young deserving Malaysians?

I am appealing to all, especially to those involve in MCA dog fights, please pause for a day and have a deep thought of what Mr. Koon wrote, do something good for a day. It won’t cost you a penny for doing so.

Before I slip my mind, please “save yvonne’s eyesight”

More info about this Great Man, Honorable KOON YEW YIN at:

Who is Koon Yew Yin? Beats me. And I am sure many out there are also in the dark of this person. But those who are abuzz in the internet might have caught his names here and there in the various articles and commentaries he wrote in some of the well known news portals.

Why Koon Yew Yin? Well, to my surprise Koon Yew Yin handed a cheque worth $200,000 to DAP on behalf of Pakatan Rakyat. This is to support PR election fund according to YB Lim Kit Siang. To many, Koon Yew Yin is a retired chartered engineer. But I don’t buy that. So I did more snooping on who is Koon Yew Yin.

Koon Yew Yin is a 76-year-old chartered civil engineer and was one of the founders of IJM Corp Bhd. He was also secretary-general of Master Builders Malaysia for nine years and a member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia and Sirim. Now he is proclaimed to be fully retired. And there is even a scholarship for higher education students setup under his name Koon Yew Yin Scholarship.

This brings to mind, how many corporate figures out there who is giving back to society? DAP’s biggest coup when it comes to a corporate figure is Tony Pua. PKR has Khalid Ibrahim. How many corporate figures out there who are willing to stick out their necks and “berkhidmat” to the people? I sincerely hope more will step forward and make Malaysia a truly better place to live in.

Koon Yew Yin has his heart in the right place. His generosity is low key but well directed at helping needy deserving students. Philanthropy in the Confucian sense, repayment of his generosity is not a contractual but a future moral obligation. This is a lesson in itself to recipients. They can replicate the concept and in theory, Koon’s seed contribution can give rise to self perpetuating scholarships. I really like the idea.
