It is not about race!

A developer patient of mine came a few days ago. Since it was in the afternoon, I was relatively free and after consultation we chatted for awhile. He read about my resignation news in the papers, and he congratulated me for making the decision.

I asked him how he rates the PR government in Selangor since his projects are mainly in Selangor.

He told me that under PR, it is now getting very difficult for housing projects to be approved. Because of this, there is a short supply of houses, and demand which exceeds supply has forced the house prices going to sky-high level. A link-house in SS2 now cost about 700,000.

He said that in the past, he could always seek ‘jalan’ to get his project passed. Now it is difficult because everything has to follow the book since the Big Brother is ready to pounce on any wrong doings.

But having said all these, his parting words were: despite getting less income and businesses, he will vote for a 2 party system for his future generation’s sake.

This is from a businessman who has extensive link with the former state government especially some of CSL’s exco members. He got his datukship from their recommendation too, and yet he has come around and said that we must vote for better governance and more check and balance. It has nothing to do with race and religion, for during the whole conversation that I had with him, like with many others, not a single word about race or religion was raised.

I recall some of the hawkers who were former branch chairmen of MCA in cheras and who were my patients and friends have quit that party. (BTW, I have been an adviser to the hawkers and RT in Pudu since the 80s, long before i joined a political party).

So the sentiments in urban area is now almost across the  board, for a 2 party system.

Contrary to the Big Brother’s propaganda that only the Chinese is against the government, I view this as an urban-rural divide.

IN fact, many Chinese and Indian voters voted for Malay candidates in areas where PKR or even PAS stood in the last General Election, and many Malay voters voted Chinese candidates.

With inflation rearing its ugly head, and prices of foodstuff going up and up, there will be more discontent in the urban areas. Unlike their rural counterparts, where life is easy and expenses relatively low — and income good due to the high prices of the commodities- the urban people are finding it more and more difficult to survive.

When people are finding it difficult to survive, and yet they see their own tax money being misused, how are they supposed to feel? It is natural that they feel disgusted and that translate to a vote against the power that be.

This is across the board, as I have said, and not confined to any particular ethnic group. So the urban revolt is not like what the Big Brother painted.. It is not really racial.

It is more about corruption, abuse of power, misuse of funds, lack of transparency and accountability, distrust of institutions which are supposed to safeguard the interest of the people, not the power that be.

Only a racist would have labelled this urban rural divide as racist.  And to label as ungrateful those who voted opposition is an insult to the principles of democracy.

I have often stated that the world today is a different world altogehter, and all of us need to use different approach,  to our own family, our children, our friends, in our work and so on. Political parties should learn to adapt too, and looking around the world, it is obvious that corrupt and dictatorial regimes are falling like bowling pins.

When urban people vote for a coalition whose platform and manifesto is for fairness and equal opportunities for all, rather than the coalition that emphasizes on race, can you call them racist?

If they want to win back votes, they have to do better than just labelling others being racist.

    Very true, Dr Hsu

Why do we find countries like New Zealand and Canada such pleasant countries to visit and even to emigrate to? One major reason is because through good governance, they have good public services, people do not need to fear the police, the rule of law prevails and so on.

The quality of life in a particular society is directly related to good governance and an efficient civil service.

In highly corrupt societies like Haiti and Nigeria, a small elite lives very well amidst great squalor. And even then, they have to live in fear behind high walls because of high crime rates, need to be protected by hired guards, drive their expensive cars through crumbling & pothole filled streets etc.

    Dr Hsu,

I recently went to Kelantan for a development project and it is my first experience there. From the few meetings I had, it is no wonder why BN cannot beat PAS in the last few elections simply because corruption is not the NORM as it used to be in BN governed states though I can’t say it is totally corruption free. And I believe BN has little chance to wrest Kelantan from PAS in the forth coming GE. Kelantanese are friendly and more open to new ideas other than perhaps some stereotyped religious dogmas.

Selangor state govt faces a lot of resistance and back stabbings from the some high ranking officers, hence slow in showing the desired changes. Besides that, PR govt are too cautious and to a certain extent short of ideas when publicity lover like Ronnie Liu is tasked to look after local councils. It back fires and I would put the blame solely on LKS and LGE for favoring yes man. I deemed RL as a liablity of DAP. He is where he is today due to the tsunami.

I agree that RL is a liability in Selangor. DAP’s politics is actually similar to most parties where yes men are favoured. This has all along been the weak point of DAP, and it has lost many capable leaders due to this. But this is also the case in most other parties, sad to say..

This not withstanding, I think we have no choice but to support change.

You are right, it is not about race (and religion, you didn’t mention ‘religion’ here). Put CSL and Nizar at the same seat, I go for Nizar anytime.

To the admission of the grandfather, BN is a coalition of ‘racist’ parties. He put it too simplistic that all ‘racist’ parties combined under a coalition become an enlarged party of ‘multiracial’ named BN. But, he conveniently leaves out the ‘racist’ mentality that ‘indoctrinated’ in them that who are supposed to be allocated which portfolio in the Cabinet, regardless of whether the person assigned to portfolio is capable or not. They will rather a dog be at certain position if none of the them is capable enough. Worse, they drag ‘religion’ along in their power play.

Yet we see this father of all racists claimed others as ‘racist’, not himself.

I wouldn’t say DAP is perfect. It has its own weaknesses like what we read in the comments here about RL. For people like Dr. Hsu, he definitely has a lot more information about the behaviour of the politicians, both in BN or Pakatan since he was in Gerakan. But for people without access to these priviledged or classified information, RL is a hardworking politician since before tsunami 308. I am not trying to say Dr. Hsu or anyone here is wrong about RL, or for that matter LGE and LKS, but, I think it’s best we leave DAP to settle as a family matter.

What I observed so far about DAP is that LKS has sacrificed greatly since the seventies. We see him in and out of ISA arrests and followed by his son, LGE. Before tsunami 308, not many aspiring politicians willing to join DAP, but prefer to join Umno, MIC, MCA, Gerakan for obvious $$ reasons. (Dr. Hsu, you are not one of them, by the way). So, if not because of these pioneers of DAP, I wouldn’t dare to imagine what is Malaysia now.

At my point of view, DAP is the most victimised party by Umno & BN, portraying it as a ‘Chinese’ chauvinist party. I guess many people have been ‘indoctrinated’ to a certain extent in believing this, but not me, for simple reason that if DAP is one such party, Karpal Singh, a principled independent minded politician wouldn’t be in DAP. He will be the first one to give a big slap on LKS or LGE.

Well, I wouldn’t blame you guys if you don’t agree in my observation, as the influence of MSM on our people, regardless of race and religion, is indeed very wide, directly or indirectly, with or without consciousness.

The voting trend is not along racial line rather than along the decisions made by informed and uninformed or less informed voters. Voters in the urban area tend to be better informed than those in the rural area due to the access of electronic media. The ruling parties can no longer fool the better-informed urban voters. Unfortunately, the rural voters are still being treated like mushrooms i.e keep them in the dark and keep feeding them manure.

Those who keep harping on the race issues are racists themselves. Just look at who are the ones shouting the loudest and their credentials.

Whenever people read about what the grandfather say, somehow we keep puzzling how can a person with rational mind could spit our such things that BN is the only coalition that can represent rakyat and not Pakatan Rakyat, which to him ‘not a coalition’ since it is not a ‘registered’ one. This only proven me correct all along that the ‘nature’ of this kind of people look at ‘form’ instead of ‘substance’. This is why we can see this kind of people, when got contract, the first thing they will do is to renovate their office premises like a five star hotel, leave with little money to fulfill the contract that they sub-contract out. This is not ‘profiling’ but it is a true fact whether you like it or not. What I can conclude here is that ‘rationality’ is out of their mind. Their top priority is to be looked ‘nice’.

For people with such nature, what scare them most is ‘what if my ugliness’ come out to surface one day and they no more ‘look nice’. That is why they are going all out to prevent this day to come, like what we saw in recent Sarawak election. But, they tend to overlook their ‘going all out’ are going to backfire on them, if not now but later, until they overlooked, IT IS NOT ABOUT RACE!

    No one is perfect.
No political party or any Organization can be perfect.
They may have sincere intentions to be perfect with perfect rules and regulations…but members in political parties and employees from commercial firms…can make things difficult and the weaknesses of CEO or political party President..not acting fast to put things right…is the starting of an imperfect party or Organization.
There are few welknown International Organizations…that have the right CEOs for decades to make sure perfect rules and regulations cannot be altered through the whims and fancies of any of his subordinates. They will demote or terminate any one…and no one is indispensable.
As far as DAP is concerned…one need to understand…the tower of strength and what it is today…..comes from one man…Lim Kit Siang.
He is also not perfect…but he is always for the people…by the people and with the people. Growth of the party made his job easier and now he is close to be a perfect politician.
Mahathir closed UMNO and started his UMNO B….from day one is not only imperfect but encourages Malaysians ….especially Muslims..to be imperfect. Blaming others are for what he is…has always en his trademark.
UMNO B is 101% racist party.
Now Mahathir said DAP is a racist party…over and over again.
Surprisingly…you do not get Najib excited by Mahathir’s claim….helping him.
Perhaps DAP have succeeded far beyond his imaginations…or perhaps..he still thinks Malaysians can easily be fooled by him..I do not know.
In politics..urban dwellers are open minded and well educated…and this will lead more and more support for change in Govt. voters.
In rural areas…life is simple and stress free..and as such..politics do not interest them….although it is actually dirty race and religion politics from UMNO B…that are controlling their minds.
That can be proven and must be proven…when their families grow larger and larger…and towns…villages also grow larger…where simple living cannot survive.
All things been said…Malaysians cannot be easily fooled by UMNO B racists twisting and turning to blame Oppositions disuniting Malaysians.
Educated folks know that is pure bunkum…yet some very well educated Malaysians support UMNO B for whatever they wish to say…as faithful team player.
So in politics…it is FOR or AGAINST…not middle ground nonsense logic..as lives are involved.
Those supporting race and religion politics and double standards applied by the Govt…which is 101% governed by UMNO B and all others are for show in their so call Barisan National. There is no one with power or authority than UMNO B final say….and therefore….it is about the minorities DAP is defending…and since Malaysian Chinese contribute most and suffered most… unfair and unjust laws…why be so surprised…DAP is defending the Malaysian Chinese more than other races?

Gerakan and MIC leaders are mere shoe shine boys.
All Malaysians vote against BN or UMNO B are racists and traitors.
DAP have proven to be a party for all races in Sarawak….but alas only rural folks seems to understand this.
keDAILan and PAS trying hard to explain to rural voters.
PAS failed miserably. keDAILan succeeded very little.
Both these two encouraging voters to vote against BN are not racists and traitors…to Mahathir and Najib? Why? What kind of logic is that?
Aiyah….not powerful enough to cause trouble to BN la.
But these crooks know..when come to the complete and whole picture..like the coming 13th GE…Anwar is the biggest traitor and racist.
PAS is somewhat like UMNO B….yet totally different as PAS do allow all Malaysians be members of PAS…if they wish to.
And for the 13th GE…..PAS is a force to be reckoned with.
If you study DAP….keDAILan and PAS…all three parties are showing their individual authorities and influences.
If you take UMNO B…MCA and MIC..and the call it BN..it is a joke….as only UMNO B is the ring leader of their Circus acts.
BN is full of shit…and hypocrites.
    Why so?
It is a small band of robbers and thieves from UMNO B…recruiting puppets..and yes men.
Robbing the whole country need special skills and that they have…for decades. No one can match Mahathir’s skills in dirty politics.
But now…the story is different. Mahathir magic shows are proven to be bluffing all spectators. So he ….so call.. “retired” and get puppets to do perform. The show must go one.
There dear all….vote for crooked showmen and hypocrites or for parties in PR to free all at 13th GE.
Can you imagine anyone voting for crabs..and puppets?

I can see an unfortunate political trend in Malaysia; the increasing use of race and religion by BN to bolster support. With better access to information even among rural voters it is more difficult for BN to use lies and deception to cover their abuses and misdeeds, hence they fall back on instigating base instincts of race and religion despite the harm done to the country.

Malaysia is becoming more racist, driven by the Grand Old Man of racism whom I do not need to mention. This will not change unless Pakatan manage to grab power. Unfortunately I do not see this happening at the next G.E. With racism comes a stiff economic price tag which hammers the economy and affects our quality of life.

What to do Dr. Hsu? My sons can escape to other countries as they are young but as a past middle age person on the wrong side of 50, few countries will take me. I predict another 10 years before things become intolerable but by then I may be too old to care what happens. When there is continued interest on raising concerns of the current rotten political landscape from the like minded, there is hope for a better and fairer Malaysia. One major group (the urban community) has already made a switch in the last GE and this was repeated in recent the Sarawak State. The more there are open discussions and constructive debates, there higher the hope that the other communities will come on board. Rural urban migration is a key to tranformation of mindset of especially for the rural folks. The younger folks doing their regular balik kampong trips need to play a more crucial role in the communication process to open up the minds of the information depressed folks back in the kampongs especially when official medias are totally biased.

I share the same frustration earlier as what Kenny had felt, that is, the urge to get away from this corrupted and discriminatory place but later felt that why should we leave our beautiful country? We are born and bred here in Malaysia and this is home. Too hell to those discriminators that play up the issues of Ketuanan and Pendatangs.

    Dear ‘TooMuch’,

You got very valid point here. Why should we go? Malaysia is our country, not just belong to Umno.

If we ‘go’, then it is to like whims, their liking. Why must we ‘go’?

Somehow, many of us are ‘indoctrinated’ to a certain extent that Malaysia is belong to a certain race. I don’t blame for thinking that.

In fact, for those whose children are already ‘out’ of Malaysia should encourage their children to come back. They are valuable voters bank for the next GE. As what RPK said, another 300,000 votes is good enough to take-over Putrajaya from Umno / BN.

Don’t give lame excuses like no upward mobility, environment not suitable, no prospect and so on to discourage your sons and daugthers to stay put at where they are. Their votes can change our future together. Please be as optimistic as our Prof Phua here.

UMNO B love to see as much minorities leave Malaysia to increase their majority percentage.
First the old UMNO encouraged Muslims to have as many children as possible…and all will be taken cared of…by the Govt.
Second..the new UMNO B apply more and more double standards to frustrate minorities..especially the Malaysia Chinese…..to sort of submit to the wills of UMNO B 0r get away from Malaysia…the more the better.
Of course….outwardly..their acting and famous dirty politics on and on…as if they treat all… as equals.
I am proud to hear Doc stay put in Malaysia..inspire of so many opportunities to leave Malaysia.
For me…after seeing the whole world…Malaysia is still one of the best country in the world to live in…and I will not submit to UMNO B dirty politics…or surrender to their whims and fancies…to steal steal steal non stop…no matter how powerful they are.
I am going to use my powerful vote to vote them out…as long as am alive and able to vote.
That does not mean PR is best too.
It means…time to change the Govt..and not stick to one…..when after 12th GE…we see an option for others to govern….and why not?
As I was writing this comment..a very influential UMNO B blog owner ask me….why I keep away from him now.
I replied…I have many Muslims friends that support UMNO B…and that is their democratic choices in life.
But to see one who owns a blog and keep promoting how good Mahathir and Najib are and constantly insult LKS ans Anwar…he can F away from my life…as to me..he is an irresponsible racist doing the devil’s work.
This was the second time..he phoned me…giving me his logic…..like Mahathir’s kind of logics.

It’s very evident that there is a trend building up along racial lines by the incumbents. They are bent on going on for another 54 years, by staging another greatest show on earth! Racism happens to be one of the acts. The grand-old-man of racism is still on that stage, and supported by ‘ke-le-fehs’ of the ruling regime. There will be many more acts to be unmasked in days, weeks to come, leading to the 13GE.

I believe the people who are voters are conscious and wary of this trend, and have exercised their rights during the 10SE. All races, including the Ibans, Dayaks, Bidyuhs, Chinese, Indians, etc. voted for change. They voted on real- hard-pressing issues based on principles rather on skin-deep emotions. They are not influenced by popular mass media propaganda by the incumbents but bent on exercising their decisive right based on careful measured evaluation.

The people must take heed that we are here in this country for a purpose-to love and cherish this place. Together, there is unity for change towards a fresh new beginning- moving away from the jaded past.

After May 1969 incident…Hussein Onn was a much loved PM…simple and trying to unite all Malaysians.
It was when Mahathir took over….and under his 22 years…double standards…and stealing with no fear angers the Malaysian Chinese and challenged Mahathir all the way..until today.
Yes…..Mahathir separated the Malays from others…as the given Malays false hopes and twisted half facts..with the dirtiest politics played.

It is not working now..but back to the post…who are racists and who are Malaysians.
Not all supporting BN are racists…but under BN..with their leader…UMNO B….and especially under Mahathir for 22 years….Malaysians are more divided than the starting of Merdeka days. This pleases UMNO B very much……for that is their only survival political card…to divide and rule.

And so we reach the new style by UMNO B after 12th GE..how to catch fishes with different baits…under Najib…and from day one AFTER 12th GE…non stop propaganda and advertising works to brainwash voters..that are more educated than before…with slogans and empty promises.
Looking back…only idiots think the minorities are asking for trouble or less loyal Malaysian citizens.
It is now….not who is more loyal or patriotic.
It is who owns Malaysia and UMNO B is fanning all Muslims to unite under their party…appoint UMNO B as the guardian of their rights.
Any Muslim falls into that trap…is an idiot…..but alas….thousands do and thousands are not….inspite of voting to support UMNO B.
To me….the signs of true democracy is coming back…with 2 strong political parties representing us.
First thing first..vote for a change in Govt to make the 2 party system work…and that is what all voters supporting BN must do….to vote for change.

    Hi there Doctor + friends

I didn’t get to read all the discussion but kind of get the drift.

    1) My taking is that it was never about race, is not about race now + will not be a race factor.

    2) Have U seen a “China Man” exploding buying Nasi Lemak or eating a Tosai?
No one will explode because the other guy next to you is not of the same race.

    3) It is all about preserving privileges.
For example if your office is located on a busy street with ridiculous parking , + for all this time the parking spot right in front is strictly reserve for you. What are the chances of one fighting to preserve that right, even if one know it is not “Fair” ?

    4) Wasn’t it the British styling of “Divide + Rule”?

    5) Starting with Tun Razak, the system had done such a good job, in that the”Race Factor” had been ingrain into every aspect of our daily life.
It is cancerous, as it will slowly destroy the whole fabric of our Country.
It will slowly tsunami over brotherhood + comment sense, which actually had always been there amount Malaysians.

    6) All is not lost, as the digital world cut thru’ all borders + a well informed society will make good decisions.
Some of the results of this “Digital Revolution”, are that the popular for the BN had been steadily dropping.
Other consequences are less Professionals + Technocrats, are willing to be a part of the BN’s end game. Just like our good Doctor.
