When belts cannot be tightened anymore!

I chatted with an old patient of mine after a consultation yesterday. He was probably suffering from a side effect of stress and not enough rest. I enquired about his job and he told me that he is working 2 jobs now, a daytime office job and part time taxi driving at night. He had to do this to make ends meet.

So i told him what any doctor would tell his patient under these circumstances– to rest more.

Then he started to pour his woes to me that he has already been tightening his belt so much over the past few years, that he dreads to think of ways to tighten it some more, since living cost is creeping up and food prices are going to shoot up. He told me that there would come a point that the belt cannot be tightened anymore, and that point is fast being reached.

With so much news on the need to cut subsidies in the newspaper ( it was even equated to opium), the government is in fact building up a case of cutting subsidies further. It is just a matter of time that subsidies on petrol will be cut further. When that happens, petrol pump prices as well as electricity tariff will go up.

I have mentioned before that subsidies are actually bad to economy in the long run. It will also create a subsidy mentality among the people. But removing subsidies in a stagnant economy will result in a lot of problems for the poor. Subsidy removal must be done very gradually, and that too, should be done when economy is expanding and real income rising.

I can’t help but recall a round table conference which I had attended  in Feb 2010 on subsidy and the economy. In fact, I have blogged on this conference a day after.

I will paraphrase what i wrote then:

I attended a round table talk on subsidy yesterday. Although most speakers spoke about the need to do away with the cost of living subsidy, like the subsidy for sugar, petrol and so on, what a young man said about being cynical impressed me most.

This young man began by saying that even though all the speakers spoke about the need to do away with subsidy, he was against the idea because being a cynical person, he doubted whether the money saved from abolishing the subsidy (direct and indirect subsidy comes to about 80 billionRM a year), will go to development and helping the poor. He said that being cynical, he thinks that this huge amount of money will go to someone else’s pockets and if so, why should he give up his right to subsidy?

His reason is based on one point only, and that is the whole system is rotten. I thought about it and I think he has a very valid point.

With the rotten system and everyone out to make a fast buck, whatever mechanism of doing away with the subsidy and using the amount saved to channel to development and helping the poor would just not work . Remember that time when the pump price of petrol went up to 2.70 from 1.92? The government promised to use the savings to channel into public transport and make it more efficient. Did we see any money going into the intended sector? A big No of course.

I can’t help but think that if the money saved from abolishing subsidy (the 80 billions) goes into private pockets and results in a few more PKFZ, even though I am all for abolishing subsidy gradually ( with safety nets in place such as cash coupons and cash cards to be given to the poor) , I would want to change my mind and go along with the thinking of this young man.

After all, if you have lived in Malaysia for the past 20 years, you can’t help but become cynical.

This young man raised  a very valid point.

We should start to withdraw subsidies slowly AFTER we ensure that the leakages and wastages are plugged first. After all the amount that has been siphoned out of the system is quite high, if we go by the reports of foreign media and investment reports.

The government must have the will to tackle corruption and cronyism, not just paying lip services, and expect people to tight belts which cannot be tightened anymore.

If subsidy withdrawal results in people unable to make ends meet, then expect social problems and crime rate to go up. If we do not clean up corruption first, expect corruption to go even more  rampant and severe, since civil servants too will be hard hit by subsidy removal and they, being in a position to dictate things, will not doubt be tempted to find other sources of income under the table.

From 2004 till now, we have wasted 7 years to tackle corruption, which is perceived to be even worse now. We do not have another 7 years, given the conditions of world economy and the middle income trap that we find ourselves in.

But do we have the will?

BN only cuts subsidies to the poor but maintain subsidies to the rich. While the poor continue to vote BN and get screwed as a reward, those bloody politicians are laughing cunningly.

It’s bad to depend on subsidies but the whole problem is that incomes have been frozen in a time warp since 1995 while inflation has kept rising.

Idris Jala said we have to live in the real world. That is correct but the real world does not recognize bumiputra privileges and will punish economic distortion resulting from such anti-competitive practice. This is the main reason why wages have stagnated for the past 16 years. Malaysians are unable to pay real world prices for goods due to stagnant wages from a stagnant economy. Removing subsidies without fixing income level will burden the rakyat.

By the way, Idris should know that a high income economy cannot be created by unleashing a flood of infrastructure projects. It will merely create high incomes for cronies. The only way to a high income economy is better education, retention of skilled workers, remove anti-competitive practices and control corruption. We also have to wean off dependency on the hordes of foreign unskilled workers who depress wages. If the wages of the lower level cannot go up neither can the wages of the upper level. It can take a decade with the right polices in place and there are no band aid shortcuts.

I have lived long enough to know this will come…as voters are split and minds tuned to race and religion politrics by these heartless robbers and thieves.
Anwar said…the moment PR comes into power..the next minute..he will reduce petrol prices..and gave solid good sound reasons that can be done.
That is one of the reason….Najib must put him into jail.
I have repeatedly requested all Malaysians….especially the young ones…to think of the poor and needies…and stop commenting like self made professors.
Voters must be serious and unite now.
Die hard ultras..racists and fanatics are in UMNO B are not strong at all. They are a disunited lot too.
Read what Dr. Hsu said and especially what that poor man who needs two jobs to stay alive said.
This have been going on for decades.
It is after 12th GE….we get to read through internet.
Mind you…all Malaysians including Muslims poor are treated like “untouchables” by corrupt n crooked leaders….right now…and same throughout the history of mankind…no change.
Corruptions is a disease. Money is the root of all evils….and UMNO B govt. love to steal as much as they can…never enough…to use money to buy loyalties and indirectly ..the country.
Leave it to their typical smart cunning ways….saying the things we like to hear and hoping all Malaysians do not blame them for doing it…becuase they have said it.
Najib said…subsidies are like feeding opiums.
How right and wise he is.
But he cut off petrol subsidies and all pay more..while dozens of UMNO B companies are being subsidised by the billions each year.
Classic examples are New Staits Times and Malay Mail papers…loosing money for decades and both belong to UMNO B….Proton…Berjaya Steel…and be forwarned…banks too.
The moment Najib do the right thing…he will fall like a ton of bricks.
Poor man…..poor Malaysians….what can I do except to vote against BN and walk my talks…as much as I can.
Do donations as much as I can…but for how long?
I guess what matters most is keep talking and vote for change.
Unfortunately….God does not take sides in politics.
But I hope God listen to the poor and sufferings all over the world.
If so….why so many million drop dead like flies?
That is why Buddhists believe in many gods..hoping few will hear and help.

To poor poor misguided Muslims…some will die for whatever Najib tells them to do..without realising he is a nobody made to be a somebody by voters.
Yes poor misguided Muslims…programmed to feel insecured without UMNO B.
With third parties like MCA …MIC and Gerakan…supporting Najib…I hope ALL will remember they have contributed to make Malaysians be idiots too.

Doc , I think the solution is simple; vote in PR comes 13th GE to ensure a viable and effective 2-party system to keep PR and BN on toes.

As corruption and abuse of power are the major causes of problems in this country, I believe a workable 2-party system will solve at least half the problems we are facing now.

When belts cannot be tightened anymore…thousands will go hungry…babies and young ones die for no money to buy medicines…and……..
Living becomes more and more difficult.
Tighten the belts for last time….plan to be sucide bombers.
That is what is happening to Muslims Palestianians….and is happening right here in Malaysia.
But in Middle East….they blame in on the Jews with the US Government protecting the Jews.
In Malaysia….UMNO B learn the art of adverttising ….promoting and mind controls from the Jews by paying RM71 million of tax payer’s money for one year. Slogans ….how to speak…Billboards with words to hypnotised Malaysians to vote for BN….all not working!! RM71 million exposed by Anwar. Najib dare not renew contract.
Belts getting tightened in Malaysia is caused by so call Muslim Government tightening thousands upon thousands Muslims belts too.
These cruel racists are not Muslims at all.
They even declared Jihad against all against them.
They treat other Muslims as being misguided by keDAILan ..PAS and DAP.
They are masters to twist and turn…lying and making fools of Muslims and non Muslims.
Will the tightening of belts in Malaysia create sucide bombers? Certainly not. We are a peaceful country with peace loving people.
But the tightening of belts will make millions of middle class Malaysians…hate Najib for what were thought he was and came true. All those are not rumours.
Suddenly…many who supported BN have left to vote as free people.
Suddenly….thousands who once believed Najib was kind and loving can see the double headed snake personality coming out….as clear a they see Mahathir is.
Belts are tightened and thousands are hungry. He does not care.
He released his “kracken”….Ibrahim Ali…to give a final blow.
    Hungry people fear nothing.

Can we just send that young man of yours to the so-called leaders so he can teach them what to do? If those idiots pretend not to know what to do, lets just get our young to teach them. So all you young people out there, show them what to do.

Get rid of the corruption and we will end all our woes. Just imagine what all those billions taken back from those parasites can do for each and every one of those suffering now, water and electricity supplies to the unfortunate, decent roads, better public transport and you name it. Simply go south to the little red dot to see what we’ve been missing, don’t have to go very far.

Those clamouring for a contract for the MRT should just tell us outright how much they want, then we donate that amount to them and we’ll get the job done cheaply and more importantly, safely. It has come to this has it not, that we feed the parasites and we’ll be able to save much more and be safe. At least we can then call it a contribution to assist the handicapped rather than have it labelled as corruption.

All you young people out there, show them YOU know what to do to solve the nation’s problems.

It has always been a pleasure reading your articles but they also give us splitting heartaches. Such is the deplorable state of affairs in Malaysian under BN.
You appear to be more invigorated after leaving Gerakan. I think many Malaysians eagerly await your most important announcement yet but are too respectful to spell it out. There are still many sitting on the fence, including professionals and intellectuals. Many including yours truly are not getting younger but fearless leaders are few and far between. I think another move on your part over to the other side will register quite a reading on the Richter scale, sending more shivers down BN’s spine, not that they have any. GE13 can come anytime and another General to the opposing forces can’t come any sooner.

The objectives to accused Anwar of Sodomy and sex shows drummed up by Najib is to get Anwar into jail or forces him to resign from politic.
Latest sex show not working….so sodomy 2 must be a kangaroo court case…to ,make sure..he gets into jail…since getting Anwar to resign …also failed.
Why is Najib so afraid of Anwar?
For one thing….Anwar knows too much…and the other…is he was a clean DPM resigned from UMNO B…to fight off double standards and corruptions..exposing so much…who is Mahathir too….with great help from Lim Kit Siang.
Anwar knows alot about Atlantuya’s death and not revealing for revealing no use with police supporting him… and laws all twisted to protect all crooks.

The people of Malaysia should not be fooled:

The ruling regime needs to amass a huge amount of money to contest the

Expect petrol hike, toll hike, electricity hike, food hike, transport hike, GST, etc after the election. Expect fat negotiated contracts to be parcelled out to corporations as payback for their contribution to BN’s election fund.

I will definitely help to campaign for a 2 party system comes GE 13. But I think I can do so as a person not aligned to any party. That way, I can see and think more objectively.

My youngest daughter came back from Brisbane last week, and i am glad that she went to register as a voter. If GE is held during her holiday, i think she will come back specifically just to vote. But if it is held during exam or certain important dates for lectures, she would not be able to come back.

She has also influenced some of her class mates who came back for holiday to do so together.

I am glad that i was able to influence many of these young people to see the merits of a 2 party system.

With a tightened economy, fanned by rising inflation and the people crying to feed their families, how long more can solutions be found?

Here we have a situation where the govt finds the subsidies too heavy and the people need the subsidies to make ends meet due to stagnant incomes. Nevertheless the subsidies will be slowly removed by the BN (Barang Naik) govt. Efforts to uplift income falls flat because fundamental issues are not addressed.

This will lead to social discontent and the ruling party will become unpopular. However the determination of this regime to cling on the power cannot be underestimated.

To cling on to power the regime will resort to manipulating the electoral process and instigating racial and religious tension. They will probably succeed.

There will come a time when even racial and religious issues fail to bring victory but by then the electoral process has become so compromised that they have become pseudo-elections in which the regime can never lose. Besides the economic hardship the people have to bear human rights abuses by a regime desperate to maintain its power.

Now we have exactly the same situation as the Arab nations – a corrupt, abusive, unpopular party ruling amid economic hardship and unable to be removed by democratic means.

This is the most likely scenario for Malaysia, a course as easily taken as water flows downhill. To change this course will require great effort. I admire people like Dr. Hsu and others who are able to keep fighting against all odds.

Doc..no need to thank LKS anything.
He was elected to provide services to the public.
    MT and Bar Council…different story.
We must not pampered politicians or else after getting elected swell headed and boastful.
We must change our attitudes too.
Be bosses and not nice understanding Malaysians only.
Let PR go and keep all their promises..especially made by Anwar…if ever get elected to occupy PutraJaya.
No good..throw PR out at 14th GE.
You will be alive and well.
I will be very old….enjoying by balance of day by day life …keeping my mouth shut on politics….that is…if I can…..hahahahahahahaha

We may be cynical after so many years of injustices inflicted on us, you asked if we have the will to lift ourselves from this trap. Sad to say, but I think we don’t. The only thing is whether our collective karma will help bring together the right conditions for the seed of a better future to germinate.
