” The same type of rice raises up a hundred types of different people

There is a Chinese proverb saying that ” the same type of rice raises up a hundred types of different people”. This simply means that you cannot expect every human to be the same, even when they come from the same culture and background.

This saying is very apt to describe the diverse range of voters. I am always fascinated by how people vote. From my observation, many have made up their minds long before the polling day, but there are many who may tell others that they have made up their minds only to change their mind last minute due to many on-the-day and on-the-spot influences.

Many like myself would have decided what the country needs, and going into the polling booth, we will not hesitate to put a cross next to the person or rather the symbol that we want to choose.

But many would not make up their minds, and sometimes you can see them ponder a bit before drawing the cross in the voting cubicle.

Many who may have decided to vote for a certain party only to change their mind on reaching the polling station. It can be due to very trifle reasons like the perceived impoliteness of the people manning the enquiry section outside, the conduct o the driver who drove the party vehicle to fetch that person, or last minute issues that suddenly surfaced ( the most famous is the headwear incident of TRH in the 1990  Semangat 46 vs BN) . It can also be caused by not so last minute events, such as events in the run-up of the campaign week, an eample of which is  the famous incident in Seputih in one of the past elections when a candidate uttered the wrong message of ‘man standing and women squatting’… the tide turned so badly against him that he was never given a second chance by his party.

In the last GE, the 4 candidates for Chief Ministers(and the announcement that the one who won the highest vote will be CM) did the ‘thing’ to bury Gerakan in Penang.. Not even DAP and LGE expected that to happen. NO one would have thought that a party with so many years of history and such deep roots in Penang would be up-rooted and wiped out so completely.

This is just an example of how  the behaviour and speeches of leaders and members of a party can affect the voting pattern in the run-up of an election.

I have seen people changing their decision last minute because they think that the candidate’s picture looks very ‘sombong’ (arrogant). That is why the first thing many candidates do is to get a professional photographer who will take literally hundreds of their photographs and then let the campaign team choose the most presentable one for the banners and pamphlets.

I have come across a voter whom when i tried to convince him to vote for certain candidate  telling me that he would not vote for that person because he felt snubbed by the candidate once during a function many months ago when the candidate did not shake his hand on passing him.

( Even within party election, some members would not vote for a certain person standing for certain party positions just because ‘that fellow has not treated the member a cup of coffee before”.. This is a true incident.. and this is  the reason many members gave for not voting a certain person during the state party election in 2005 of a certain party. You may think this is trifle but this is human nature too).

There are of course many voters who will vote for a candidate/party because of a sewing machine gift, or even a RM50 angpow. But that type is more among the rural areas and semi rural and not among the urban crowds that I am more familiar with.

That is why most of the campaigners would be told to smile, shake every hand ( but not that of a Muslim lady), endure all sorts of abuses that may come their way.

Those who drive campaign cars are volunteers in name, but in fact they are paid an allowance that would be the envy of a taxi driver. This ensures that they are happy and polite.

While these ‘last-minute-decision-maker’ is only a small proportion, with most voters already made up their minds, in a democratic system where every vote counts, these minority as a group may become the one that decides the outcome in a close contest.

That is why no one must be arrogant even when he or she has the upper hand in a campaign.

This is the practical aspect of a campaign… And unfortunately this is part and parcel of politics.

I agree with you about the diverse range among voters. I am like you and I vote based in what I think the country needs. This means that I look at the symbol and not the candidate. I don’t care who the candidate is as long as he/she if from the party of my choice.

However, I will break this rule if the party of my choice nominates a candidate who is already known to be trash. A good example would be Wee Choo Keong. Although I am a PR supporter, If I had been a voter in Wangsa Maju in 2008, I would not have voted for him. However rather than vote for the BN candidate, I would have stayed home on polling day, even if someone I respected such as you had been the BN candidate.

You stated that your type of voters, “when going into the polling booth, we will not hesitate to put a cross next to the person or rather the symbol that we want to choose.” This means that when you were previously a Gerakan member, and in particular being a CC member if I am not mistaken, surely you would have been expected to always vote for candidates from your BN coalition. After all, they were your political partners and colleagues!

However, from all your writings, opinions and comments here in your own blog as well as elsewhere that I have come across, I wonder how you would have voted if the BN candidate in your constituency had been Chua Soi Lek, or Chan Kong Choy, or Ling Liong Sik. How to put the X next to such names! Might not be able to sleep for the next few nights! I sure wouldn’t like to be in your shoes having to vote for such people.

There is one type of voter whom I despise the most. These are the ones who actually hate the BN but continue to vote for BN. Let me explain. Until 2008, there were many people I personally know who over the years are always openly condemning BN. Yet they always voted for BN candidates. When I asked them why they voted for parties they despise, the answer was “aiya! don’t want trouble lah!”

When you make your decision…simple and straight forward…to be FOR or AGAINST….for country and people..you don’t think too much this or that.
Imagine Nurul was a nobody standing against BN heavy weight….Elizabeth Wong….Jeff Ooi and many others….mostly unknown..also considered no winners by a long shot.
They won… based on voters… hungry to vote AGAINST BN.
It is the selfish…the political minded voters ….the too smart cunning business people..that are fickle minded…with clear selfish ulterior motives and personal reasons.
    How many?
Just observe how UMNO b won some of their seats.
Even if they field a donkey…their supporters will vote for BN.
13th GE should be on…and this time…PR result will be much better than 12th GE.
BERSIH2 rally helped to swing votes.
Najib helped to swing votes to Oppositions….without him knowing it.
PR never had it so good.

Some people vote to maintain the status quo because they are afraid of change. “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t”, they say. I explain to them that the status quo cannot be maintained. The level of corruption is unsustainable and we will keep going backwards.

Another group don’t believe that Pakatan can govern the country. They are unwilling to give PR a chance. It is very hard to overcome their prejudice although I’ve tried.

Thankfully those who vote BN out of fear of instability are getting less and less. Even the older generation of Chinese have overcome their fear.

If you meet any fence sitters try to convince them to vote wisely. This election may be our last chance to vote out BN. If BN wins they will implement ways and means to make sure their power is never threatened again.

Why does a simple choice ……made to be.. complicated?
BN voters are die hard supporters and BN is loosing some because the die hard voters start thinking and when they think..it is showing how smart they can be….to change for the better.
Only MCA ..Gerakan and MIC minorities are racists and selfish people.
These 3 parties are reduced to nothing at 12th GE.
Are we saying voters supporting change of government are cunning and selfish…by a large number or is it only the few?
I think vast majority Malaysians are not so easily fooled by cunning politicians any more.

I am proud to note that my 2 children who voted for the first time in 2008 had execised their rights in voting for PR even though the candidate is from PAS and this had make a big break through in Chinese minds. Among the 3 parties in PR, PAS has shown to be the most helpful and curteous party and they do show their respect for Chinese and most Chinese have now warm up to them and for MCA, Gerakan to want to rise up again……well…..Chinese in urban areas certainly will show them the door the 2nd time and this time it may be for good.

For people constantly seek for ‘kangdao’, they vote according to where the wind blows to. That’s the reason why transparency is so important whoever the government is.

It’s good LGE introduces CAT (Competency, Accountability, Transparency) upon taking-over of Penang state government, in a way to force people not to vote based on ‘kangdao’.

This kind of voters, though hantam whoever kao-kao, on polling day, still vote for them. LGE has set a benchmark for Pakatan Rakyat if indeed they manage to take-over Putrajaya.

How many BERSIH2 walkers and supporters have two minds in their votes?
How many voters that voted for change at 12th GE are now….planning to vote for no change.
How many PR party members turned frogs and toads?
How many UMNO b members do you think… will now vote for change in 13th GE?
How many opportunists looking for favors from government are there.whose votes cannot be relied upon.
Are they swinging towards change more or are they still undecided.
In any case..the outcome of results have never been depending upon them now.
In the past..these opportunists may be influential as they are bosses on companies.
But commercial company workers are totally different from government stuffs….and the swing towards supporting PR are so clear.
BERSIH 2 walkers are mostly commercial workers..
Don’t be blind!! Look at them..from all races..mostly young Malaysians.
All may eat the same rice….but rice have different qualities and not all eat the same quality of rice.
It is the lowest quality that all poor Malaysians..have no choice but to eat that same rice.
It will be this group of rice eaters that will be die hard supporters for change for they know they are being treated with double standards by the government.
Bribe them…thrown in goodies…..repair their broken houses for free…they will smile and vote for change.
Sibu miracle is the sign for change. Presuming DAP had not won it..the vote of change is so enormous.
It is called a Sibu Miracle….even by Lim Kit Siang,
Who cares about the few thousands COMBINED together from MCA….MIC and Gerakan that are supporting UMNO b.
Are they getting more and more or lesser and lesser.

    ong,
before i joined gerakan, i hv voted for DAP. After i joined gerakan, i was`an opposition within gerakan, and from 2006 onwards, i have been openly asking the party to withdraw from BN, citing the excesses of umno and the raciast policies as basis of my argument.

I was lucky that i stay in SS2, which is PJ North, and voted there, and the candidate is not from gerakan, but rather, from Make Chinese Angry, so i have been voting and voting for the opposition. Had it been a candidate from Gerakan, I would have been in a dilemma n would have to support my own party. bbbut being in an area where mca is the candidate, i have no qualm voting for my ideals.

My role within Gerakan has all along been asking the party to go back to its ideology of a fair and equal society , and that is why i advocated that it has to get out of the coalition. I joined Gerakan but not BN. The form i signed to join was a gerakan form and not umno or mca form.. The party is an entity by itself, just that it happens to be in coalition with other parties but it is an entity by itself. Being in coalition means just an association, and if you look at western countries, coalition comes and goes and it is not static. if there is policy disagreement, a party can just break off from the coalition n form another one with others.Being in coalition does not mean that grassroot members need to vote for each others. It is more at the decision making level that coalition works.

After 308, when I was already a senior member of gerakan, ANwar was standing in Permatang Pauh. i openly asked people to vote for anwar in this blog as I have said that he represented a chance for change. (just search for the statement in this blog).
It was to Gerakan’s credit that no action was taken against me. At that times, Ktk was not very happy about that, but since the main stream media did not play up, like in the case of Dr Toh, (probably because i was not well known to the mainstream press), the party had not taken any action, apart from certain subtle advice n hints that i should not go against BN. But even at that time, many gerakan members from Penang did not campaign for BN, with the tacit agreement of some of the top leaders of the party. It was to be noted that at that time, the party was actually debating and brain storming whether to leave or to stay. Once ktk successfully lobbied for a minister’s position, and the deputy appointed as state adviser of perak, i knew that the party would no longer be able to get out. can only say i have tried my best to get the party back to its ideology but my best effort was not good enough.

There are two types of die hard voters.
One is for people and country and the other is from UMNO b party
Dir hard supporters for DAP are not racists.
They support Lim Kit Siang’s …one man standing to fight corr4uptions.double standards all by himself…and now with two partners…becoming PR party.
You cannot change the mind set..poisoned by UMNO b for 50 years on Malays overnight.
But Malays are more sincere and crazy for truths..but they bare slow in learning.
Chinese….can change for the better or worst overnight…because they are smart selfish buggers.
The minorities from MCA ..MIC and Gerakan are the Chinese and Indians racists and unbelievably selfish bastards..that poisoned Chinese and Indian minds. to serve UMNO b as their shoe shine boys..and puppets.. for personal gains and glory.
We need to watch for the signs….and all signs are pointing towards changing the government …is the final decisions from vast majority Malaysians.
The only way UMNO b can win is by cheating with phantom votes…..and this is not easy now…as daily such cheats are exposed.

    Monsterball,

Since we are now on a contest on who vote PR, how many times we voted PR and how long we voted PR, I don’t mind telling you my testimony. I voted PAS since 1990 and I gave my vote to either PAS or PKR for the four following GE, my constituency is a Malay majority. Last election Umno won by 45 votes, I can easily find out 45 friends and relatives of mine who give their vote to UMNO. They don’t like Umno but might despise PAS more. So am I asking a fair question? If Ong have the answer, we all learn, don’t you think so?

My question to you, forget DAP, tell us since when you vote PAS and give your support to PAS?

    Rhan,

I will give you a few reasons. Umno has far more religious bigotry than PAS. By this I mean oppressing other religions. Umno created the Allah issue, PAS said no problem, other religions can use Allah.

PAS is much less corrupted than Umno. This is obvious. Umno is always using race and religion to divide the people. Not PAS.

PAS’ Islamic state policy is a non-issue. It will never have the 2/3 majority required to change the Constitution which is required for hudud laws. If PAS goes overboard do you trust DAP and PKR to protect your rights against PAS or the castrated MCA and Gerakan to protect you from Umno?

I think many Chinese are now comfortable voting for PAS. Do a survey among your friends and relatives. You may be surprised.

Your article reminds me of the Chinese character of a Man (Ren) which is written in two simple strokes. It symbolises an upright Man standing firmly on his two feet. However, Man in reality is such a complicated being.

But I would like to believe that Man can be complex in thinking yet simple in approach, attitude, and application.

Casting one’s vote in the coming 13GE can be one example.

No doubt there are die-hards for the party with fixed attitudes. Nothing can change their mind whom to vote for. There are also some who have already cast their votes, in their mind, that is.They are sure who can really represent them. Some are ambivalent and adopt the wait-and-see approach which are open to influences, Influences can come in many forms, including the complex inter-play of emotions, human relationships, and even monetary and other enticement. But if a voter were to vote in a government that serves its people with justice and fairness, uprightness, principles and magnaminity then one has to balance one’s thoughts with his heart. Does one want a leader or his party who is racist, prejudiced, talk-only-no-action, flip-flopping, myopic and corrupted? Or does one want a candidate who is competent, accountable and transparent, not for himself but for the people he/she serves?

The incumbent ruling regime has been at it for 54 years. Its captains and crew still believe that they can represent the people in another round of election or beyond. Given the current political situation within and without the country, they may be sailing into a tsunami. Nevertheless, the scene can change and many voters can be enticed.

On the other hand, the Bersih movement has garnered a sizeable number of would-be voters for a new beginning for the nation. Together with other principled competent parties, they are going to break the shakles of the ruling regime.

Despite the flaws, Man is still a thoughtful, emotional, and political being. Thus, come 13GE, eligible voters have to vote wisely for a better tomorrow for our future generation.

By the way, all eligible thinking voters will be standing on their two feet to cast their votes.

Could, to vote or not to vote, be a question?

I will give PAS candidate the first consideration of my vote.
If there is no PAS candidate, but DAP, I will consider voting for DAP.
If there is no PAS or DAP candidate, but the Blue Eye symbol against BN, I will vote for Blue eye symbol.
Not that I dislike BN. They have 54 years of taking charge and not performing well in the last 35 years.
I vote for the birth of two fronts system in Malaysia.

I do not submit that PR candidates are more descent or capable than candidates from BN generally.
LGE is an exception, but there is only one LGE. Mat Sabu is good but there is only one Mat Sabu. Teresa Kok is great, but there is only one Teresa Kok.
I was terribly disappointed by the PR kataks in Perak in GE12. Perak was betrayed.
There will still be katak after GE13 unless the laws is revised to put it to a stop.
There are still many candidates going for the money from both sides in GE13. Quick, easy and big money, never mind the moral !

I vote the the change from one front empire system to two fronts alternative system in Malaysia, and with that, the citizen will have the upper hands over the politicians and these politicians needs to sweat and work their ass out to stay in the game. Complacent, incompetent, and corrupted politicians will have lesser chance to survive more than one term.

One type of rice feed a hundred types of people, only if these people have one common vision on how to gain the upper hands over the politicians.
If this vision can be created and proliferated.

There will be people who vote with different motivation, and convenience. If there is a shift big enough for the change, Malaysia will have a better future. People will stand fairer opportunity. The nation has stronger pride.

    Will there be GE13?

    Rhan,

I always personally tell those I know what I think of them if they tell that they voted BN NOT BECAUSE they support BN, but voted BN BECAUSE they “aiya! don’t want trouble lah!” As I mentioned earlier, I have no problems whatsoever with those who vote BN because they believe in and support BN. They have the right to support the party of their choice. Same as my right to support my party of choice.

I support DAP and I admit this fact to anyone who cares to know and asks me. If they ask me why, I will tell them. If they ask for my advice, I will give it to them. But unlike you, I don’t go around telling people which party they should vote. I am politically conscious and aware but I am not a political activist. Are you trying to deny me my right not to be a political activist? I therefore suggest to you that there is no need for you to show off your sanctimonious behaviour by challenging me if I “have some idea how to pull this group of people to vote PR”. I am too mature and experienced to be impressed by your type.

My making comments here is not about “pulling people to vote PR”. It appears to me that you cannot understand this simple philosophy. It is about conviction. It is about people voting for the party they trust and believe in instead of voting for certain parties simply because of “aiya! don’t want trouble lah!”

As for your question asking “monsterball” (geez, I like this name!) to “tell us since when you vote PAS and give your support to PAS?”, I don’t know the “monsterball” personally and cannot answer for him. However, let me tell you that I voted for PAS in 1969 because for that election, the only two candidates in my constituency were from UMNO and PAS (Parliament) and UMNO and MCA (State). Now do you understand why I cannot get impressed by your question to monsterball?

Having got that out of the way, why don’t you now impress us further by telling us when did you first learned that you can trust PAS and decided that you are prepared to vote for PAS?

Rhan…my friend…do us a favor..put your opinions out and stop being an arm chair critic.
Back to PAS…I asked Rhan…you want more…and here is more.
PAS is a multi racial political party.
PAS have changed to b more open minded for years.
Just look at PAS…Mat Sabu…speaking out on history that like Lim Kit Siang said.most are UMNO’s one sided untruthful stories.
I simply love and respect Kelantan MB…Nik Aziz.
I used to hate Hadi Awang….for being a racists and no better than UMNO b racists…but since joining PR…and watched closely by Karpal…Hadi is toeing the line.
But all those years…I think he is playing the wrong game against UMNO b.
I think he has learn to be more open minded.
Husam is good but not forceful enough.
PAS politicians cares for all Malaysians and is a non corrupted party.
The place I vote.in Gombak…is BN Vs DAP….and you know who I vote for all my life.
Had it be UMNO b Vs PAS..it will always be PAS as from day one..I support the “losers” for a more opposition voices to be heard…thus supporting Democracry all my life.
And Kenny have said it so well…that Chinese are supporting PAS more and more as days passes by.
    OK….Rhan….Kenny….Ong and Monsterball have spoken.

    Sir,
At each GE, an uncle, running a small business would always insist his wife to vote Alliance/BN so not to rock the boat which may affect business. Came the time when their daughter was not able to get into a local university and was advised to seek the assistance of MCA. She got to get into UM and that MCA fella thought he’d got some sure votes.
The next GE, Uncle went about convincing everyone he knew to vote opposition. Why the change of heart, they asked? He’d say, protect our rights? if protecting our rights our children should get to go into any university on their own merits and not to have to get our ‘protector’ to go beg for a place!!
Till his passing, he’d advice everyone to go opposition.
And till today, Gerakan and MCA are still wondering why they are being deserted.

Technical cannot change the fundamental. While individual may vote based on unexpected reasons, from the macro view their votes would not be random. The votes reflect how good their understanding of current situation, consideration of long term (vs short term angpau) and care about the people and country (for those who can emigrate). Therefore, improving voters’ wisdom definitely helps. When they can think wisely, the voting pattern will change. Talk to others, blogging, campaigns like BERSIH… Hundred types of different people still eat rice. Looking on the commonality.

I agree with you that we need to create a wind that is strong enough so that even many random voters may be influenced by the big picture. In Penang 308, after the Han Chiang rally for the opposition, a wind which was already formig turned into a hurricane and blew everything away. I am sure those random voters whom I have described above may even follow the winds and vote accordingly.

Now the wind is strong in urban area, but not so much in rural … they need at least a small wind to blow 45% of rural votes in order to win…

    Kenny,

I am aware there is more and more Chinese that support PAS, but like Hsu said, it is mainly from the urban and young voters, I am not too sure about the older folks, their sentiment could change just by a spark of issues, BN is actually very experienced in playing this game.

Islamic state is an isuue, the crux is not with DAP and PKR but what are the combination of seats won by each party. Coalition is not permanent if you get what I meant, but we have to take on the risk.

The major concern with me is that some might still not able to see what tangible changes PR bring forward, even under those state which they are the government. Do we really see PAS is much difference from 10, 20 and 30 years back, or the changes are purely from the voter mindset on how they perceive BN is performing?

You see, we still have many voter that vote depending on candidate, or not to vote because they believe a candidate is immoral, their rationality is perfectly right but how this help to create a state with balance of political power is beyond my comprehension. 五十步笑百步!

Rural folks support BN more than PR.
Voters voting for candidates with credentials recognised by voters and not vote based on party. symbols.
Anymore reasons that PR don’t stand a chance to wallop BN like hell in coming 13th GE?
With 72% support…Najib declared one year ago….yet dare not have snap 13th GE to be elected as PM by the people.
Now 59%…..also stalling. WHY??? Still can win ..why delay?
    Waste of time to explain.
There are approximately 5 million Muslim voters out of 7.5 million.
Take 59% of Malays..meaning 3 million Malays support UMNO b.
Balance 2 million to PR .mostly to PAS and keDAILan..and at least 90% of the 2.5 million minorities support PR..mostly to DAP.
There you have it….2 million Malays….plus 2 million minorities.making a total of 4 million supporting PR against 3.5 million support BN….
And the new young voters.more and more registered…almost 90% want change of government.
To cut the story short…I think UMNO b does not have more than 32% support and getting lesser and lesser ..the longer Najib delays the 13th GE…..for many reasons.
First and foremost…Malaysians are sick of massive corruptions and …divide to rule and double standards.
Only way for Najib to avoid being charged for corruptions and murder is to declare Emergency Rule or run like hell to another country.

Like to talk a little about rice.
It has always been Chinese life line food.
The poor can eat plain rice with little else or nothing.
One must eat all from the bowl and not one rice must be wasted.
That is prewar and coolie time under British and Japanese rule.
I recommend all to go and get that 70 year old black and white movie…”The Good Earth” and learn more about rice.
Through technology….rice have sprung up to so many grades and qualities.
The King Of Thailand is recognized as the King who made Thai rice the best in the world.
Asians love rice eating and rice have many grades…but the grade that is most commonly eaten by Asians are the lowest quality and Cheapest ones.
They eat to live but rich buggers eat to enjoy and therefore rice eaters are not one kind. It also have poor…..middle class and highest quality like people..being divided and recognized.
    European..love potatoes….beans and yeast.
Indians love beans…yeast …rice flour powder…to make tosai…chapati..nan..and eat rice too…but not the high quality type as they like curry.. that will drown all the sweet rice smell….so they choose the middle quality …good enough.
Rice does raise hundreds type of people.
But the largest group of people eating rice which we can depend to vote for change of government is the poor and middle class.
The richer they are…the more selfish they become.
That’s the nature of life…and thank God..Malaysians are getting poorer and poorer and that spells the end of “N” in RAHMAN..
Don’t vote BN out…be prepared that your daughters may need to be maids in 10 years time….and the corrupted lot will get stronger and stronger to slave drive all forever.

Despite the optimism shown here, kicking out BN is very hard because the playing field is so tilted to BN’s favour. On top of that BN also cheats using postal votes, clone voters, phantom voters and even foreigners turned voters.

It’s like BN has 10% of the vote already. PR’s support must exceed BN’s by at least 10% to overcome the uneven playing field and the cheating. Being marginally more popular won’t do.

But don’t let this discourage us. Seemingly impossible odds can be overcome. Before the 2008 GE no political analyst thought that BN’s 2/3 majority can be lost. Steven Gan, editor-in-chief of malaysiakini wrote a piece, “Don’t Expect BN to Lose Big.” But lose big they did.

Remember that every vote counts. In the ‘first past the post’ system a win by 1 vote is still a win. Who knows, the handful of people you persuaded to vote for PR may be the decisive factor in winning a seat.

    Kenny,

Your comment is exactly the same as my ‘visualisation’ comment about a football game on ‘uneven’ playing field (previously commented as ‘unlevel’).

    We are at amber!

Score of Pakatan 7 Umno 5 is achievable but still not enough to change Malaysia.

Let’s aim for Pakatan 15 Umno 5, to let them have the power to bring the Constitution back in perspective. Only then, we can change Malaysia to the envy of others, especially the Singaporeans.

We as the spectators of the football match, play an important role for Pakatan to win on score of 15-5. This maybe the decisive factor as you commented about.

Remember, the opponent play with ‘clutches’ (as allowed by the referee) with 5 goals advantage even before kicking of. You know why they insist to play on ‘clutches’? Because ‘they’ can’t even stand without clutches, backlashes from their own policy NEP.

Perhaps another record where a football game play with clutches on…Malaysian style, Malaysia Boleh.

    Dear True Malaysian,

Our ability to choose our own govt is seriously compromised. Unfortunately it may get worse if BN wins the 13th G.E.

Territorial army companies are being created in every parliamentary constituency. There is a strong suspicion that they will be given postal votes. Fortunately this will not be in time for the 13th G.E.

Other methods of cheating will also escalate such as selling foreigners citizenship for votes. When the biometric system is implemented it will give the EC even more scope to cheat with an opaque computerized system.

Don’t bet on the PSC for electoral reforms. It will be all talk only but no action. You can’t expect crooks to curtail their own cheating.

It may come to a stage where the system has been compromised so much that BN can never lose no matter how unpopular it is. This will be like the situation in Arab countries. In Egypt Mubarak managed to win 90% of parliament seats with almost no grassroot support.

For this coming G.E. the cheating has not escalated to a stage where it is impossible to overcome. So this may be our only chance to vote out BN. If PR doesn’t perform we can vote them out anytime. Not so with BN which is determined to cling on to power at any cost.

    Kenny,

The going gets tough, the though gets going.

Worst case scenario will be boycott the 13th GE by Pakatan if electoral processes are not cleansed in time. Participating in it will only lend credence to Umno. Until now, they still argue, if the electoral is not clean, why Pakatan can win 5 states and deny BN 2/3 majority. If this is not the case of lending credence, what is?

Let’s visualise if electoral is not cleansed by then, and Pakatan boycott 13th GE, and we rakyat abstain from voting. This will surely becoming an international issue that Umno could not swallow. Meanwhile, the four states under Pakatan opt not to dissolve theeir respective state assemblies, and keep ruling until the tnure lapsed at 2013.

This will definitely put pressure on Umno to have a clean, free and fair election. Pakatan should think along this line and perhaps to have subsequent ‘BERSIH’ at the same time.

We rakyat had lent credence to this supposedly illegal Umno-led government (due to dirty elections) for far too long. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH is the message we want Umno to know.

    streetfighter,

I said many time, so long as Umno cannot play ‘responsible’ politics, either they remain as the government or become opposition, 2-PARTY system will not be there. They are still playing Melayu-Muslim-Islam-Sultan (MMIS in short) all day long, all year round.

If not, we would have seen 2-PARTY system as of now after tsunami 308. Overwhelming power must be given to Pakatan this round for them to put things in perspective, and PKR-DAP-PAS, with no one dominance, will act as check and balance among themselves. This is definately much better to have Umno acting in that role.

Last but not least, it is my hope for Umno to revamp for the long term good of Malaysia. They need people like Sakmongkol to do that. The present set of Mahathir-Pak Lah-Najib era Umno leaders have to go to have an effective revamp. MCA, MIC, Gerakan will be alll buried by then.

Ask yourselves, under circumstance of ‘dirty’ 12th GE, Pakatan won 5 states and deny BN 2/3 majority. Why? Why tsunami 308 happened?

What if 12th GE was ‘clean’? Pakatan would have won more than 5 states and now sitting in Putrajaya. Will this be ‘wishful thinking’?

I may not have classified information on rural voters like Dr. Hsu has, but, don’t underestimate them. They are not fools. Perception on them that they are hard core Umno supporters may be inaccurate. That’s my observation until I proven wrong when 13th GE concluded.

But of course, Pakatan should not be overconfident and be humble always. If my observation is right, perhaps we will see Umno migrate to Sabah and Sarawak, and Pakatan rule in Semanjung Malaysia.

The urban and rural voters think differently and therefore vote differently. With the impending GE13, politicians are very busy on their rounds drumming up support for their party. The concerned thinking voters are even more flustered.

The incumbent ruling regime will go all out to deny others the seat at Putrajaya , even if bodies are ‘crushed’. All types of deceit, trickery, forgery, and manipulation could be employed.

Already it has been reported that the DAP has detected 22 more cases of discrepancies in postal votes in Negri Sembilan.

The matrix system bringing in foregin workers could be another case in point.
Infact, foreigners in Sabah had been given citizenship since time immemorial. Could it have all started since the days of Dr.M?

The lure of enticement from the ruling regime will be even jazzed up to bring in the required votes. Funds for constituents are currently used without much accountability and without any action from the relevant authorities.

For that…we can be sure…the “perhaps” is another wishful thinking….that ATM seems to keep suffering from…or perhaps feeling so lonely…he needs to create all sorts on nonsense to get attentions.
He can do that…as long as it does not involve putting bad vibrations to young voters..to keep their votes open for discussions…which ATM love to do that…talk this… talk that….apply agree to disagree…not contributing to free Malaysia in a clear way.

There is no choice. The opposition has to fight an unfree and unfair election. But to boycott the polls will just make BN jump for joy. No doubt the govt will have no legitimacy but BN has never worried about legitimacy on their way to power. See how they grabbed the Perak govt and held on to it with controversial court decisions which treated the Constitution like toilet paper.

The way to overcome the handicap is to get enough support to overcome them. It’s very unfair but it has to be done.

It’s true that for a 2 party system to work both sides must play by the rules of democracy. Hence we do not have a 2 party system now because Umno still wants to play dirty.

However once PR is seated in Putrajaya Umno will have no choice but play by the rules. There may be a transitional period where they will try to sabotage the new govt with their goons in the civil service but once that is passed there is little they can do except to compete democratically to gain popularity.

Right now…the so call weak Oppositions..playing what role…you tell me.
It is performing the 2-party system ….where before 12th GE…you have none.
All you smart guts go and talk till all the cows come home on no 2-party system….this and that…as much as you wish to twist…agree and then twist and disagree.
The fact remains…Najib dare not announce the date of 13th GE..and his one party controlling all is shattered.

With a heavy heart–i am mourning the passing of my wife’s father and my inlaw- I say that under no circumstances should the opposition boycott the next election.

Socialist Front used to be the biggest opposition in Malaysia, in fact it was a coalition betwenn Labour Party and Parti Rakyat. In 1965 election, they boycotted the GE and afterthat, they were never again the force that could have shaped Malaysia differently.

Unexpected things can happen in GE, since BN would be stretched thin, and next election is the best chance ever in the history of Malaysia to vote for change. So to boycott now would be throwing a good chance away.. even when the playing field is not flat, the opposition may still outrun BN in an uneven field , if they play their card right. Why talk about boycotting now?

    But that won’t happen…Kenny.
    So what’s next?
PR are fully aware and prepared for the worst.
They don’t need wise guys like ATM and you to tell what they already know…and they represents Malaysians.
You can do your little part by helping…not reminding how powerful UMNO b is.which is totally nonsense.
Why are you and ATM doing that…..Kenny?
Does that mean UMNO b will govern forever?
Why talk about we cannot get from UMNO b.
Why not contribute to strengthen People Power with positive thinking?

I don’t know why this elderly man keep pestering me. His behaviour is just like an experience I had with an elderly man.

On that encounter, out of sympathy, I approached an old lonely man sitting at a walkway, to see how I could help him, but you know what, instead of showing his appreciation, he spitted on me. If I didn’t manage to control my emotional, I would have done something seriously wrong.

But, come to think of it, one day, we ourselves will become an old man as well. That’s made me feel better with these unpleasant encounters with old men. I just have no luck with old men, perhaps. Hope not I behave like them then one day.

Well, he can say anything he wants if that can make him happy.

Come back to this topic proper on BOYCOTT of election if electoral is still dirty.

Please read through my earlier comment, I mentioned:-

“Worst case scenario will be boycott the 13th GE by Pakatan if electoral processes are not cleansed in time”.

“Participating in it will only lend credence to Umno”

So, if Pakatan deems it is okay to go ahead in participating, who are we non-politicians to stop them? If that is so, and knowingly Pakatan is at unfair end, overwhelming support to them is what we should do. If they decided to boycott, then we abstain ourselves from voting.

Umno is using this as their arguing points in not willing to clean up the electoral processes, by saying, why complain now but not earlier, why you can still win if the electoral is dirty, etc, etc.

Let’s visualise again, if you are are invited to play mahjong, knowing that the other 3 players colluded to cheat you, would you be so foolish to go ahead with the play?

In actually fact, the idea of boycotting is not mine, it’s RPK, and somehow I agreed with him.

Let’s visualise again, if Pakatan decided to boycott the 13th GE and majority of we rakyat abstain from voting, this can be a huge issue internationally that Umno cannot chose to ignore. The repercussions will be great on our country politically, economically and international reputation as a sovereign country. This is no joke, by the way.

I thank Dr. Hsu for bringing up the point of earlier boycotting of election by opposition in those days, frankly, I was not aware of this before that. The condition then, I should say, is not like present. Opposition then was not as united and strong then, and as a result, they were buried for good.

Coming back to present day opposition, i.e. Pakatan Rakyat. Anwar, being an ex-Umno, is familiar with how Umno play politics, and with this special knowledge, he managed to unite the opposition under Pakatan Rakyat. Of course, Umno is aware the damage Anwar can do on them, and we see scandals to knock Anwar down so at the same time, knock Pakatan out. One thing Umno underestimate is that, over the years, Pakatan has become more matured, and managed to nurture good calibre leaders over the years where, even without Anwar, Pakatan will still survive. Not only that, they have gained supports all over from rakyat.

So, to me, boycotting the GE is still an option, and Pakatan can use it to pressure Umno to make the electoral clean and go for a clean, fair and free election. It will be some sort like the Arab Spring but in different form.

    两党制不等于民主,美国的走下波应该与民主无关,或许两党制也会变得僵化和不民主,也可能美国人的价值观变了,由义务,人道走向放纵,霸道,或许也是时候美国人向中华民族学习啥是四维。

His last breath was …if he had known he had such a son…he would drown him …by throwing him to the well.
That last words of him came true…the son was drowned…but not at a well.
He was drowned at Bukit..in Thailand… enjoying a boat ride…and the boat caught a big stone…turned turtle. So were few boats.
    All were saved…except him.
The life saver accompanying him…swam and look for him..but cannot find him.
His head knocked on a stone and he sank like a fish…and the tide was too strong for the life saved to go deeper.
    His body floated up.
Relatives gave that young 23 year old boy a burial and as you know…there is always good news told to console the mourners.
The monk went into a trance and said..the boy is now a monk…happy and well in the other world.

Is he surprised….cilipadi is a real human being after all?
Dr..Hsu is an ever forgiving man…..but for what he is reading about Rhan…I am sure he is shocked and surprised too.
Rhan love to sot on an arm chair..throwing out questions to others…asking others to answer where is does not have answers at all.
Imagine a teacher asking students why this .why that…and students ask the teacher for the answer..he said he also don’t know.
When one does not know..one say “PLEASE…can you give me answers to this question or doubt in my mind?”
That is the sign of his boastful character….trying to learn and make a fool from one… teaching him. That has always been his art to learn and make fun of others.
Rhan is a typical son of a BN corrupted political father or a son of a fisherman….so badly brought up and boastful.
No matter how badly brought up….to offer condolences to a man he call ….a friend for his great loss…is natural.
At first..we can presume he does not know………but after tons of reminders…and feeling surprised cilipadi responded…he know this the moment Dr.Shu announced it.
Why won’t he offer his condolences?
Does he feel he has been cornered and shameful to do what we ask?
I think so…this son of BN crook is never wrong……no matter how much you try to prove how wrong he is….he is above all..and never wrong.
He is a self appointed arm chair judge.
I say with all sincerity….I have never seen anyone in my life of a person.. so boastful …running away…avoiding giving condolences to a friend for his great loss.
I honestly hope it is good riddance to bad rubbish.
And if he should come back and comment in new posts …I hope all commentators ignore talking to him…for he is full of shit and a real real disgrace to the Malaysian Chinese community…roots…culture and behaviors.

    streetfighter,

Is monster your dad, or your twin? I am asking because it is pretty mystical and unbelievable to find two similar inane minds in the same place and at the same time.

I don’t do superficial thing, but I respect those who do it, and they might be more sincere and do more, i don’t know. So don’t waste your time on me, please.

I think…today is the last day of mourning…7 days to heaven….7 days to wake up.
From a death…we learn so much about mindfulness….to do what is right or wrong… two minds..undecided..confused…slow minds…and worst of the lot…the minds that are infested with worms ….talk big..no manners…shaming the Chinese roots…culture…..behaviors.
When one have no manners…visiting a house of a person he call.a friend for years..and that friend is mourning over a dear one dead…no condolences…no words of comfort…what kind of a friend that person is?
May Doc stop mourning and be happy…the father-in-law soul is released today.
Whether the dead be a hungry ghost or be reborn…no one knows….but he will remember all the living love ones as much as the living love ones…will remember him forever.

Actually…7 steps to heaven…or six kind of traps to overcome and reach the 7th step to be in paradise..with the Lord..Allah…Buddha…Murugan…which ever you are comfortable with.
And that tests starts from the 7th day ..when the dead wakes up.
And since not easy to overcome all traps….humans of all religions…created.. “All Souls Day”….to honour and respect the dead.

…..whose souls are floating around we call ghosts.
Thus hungry ghosts…naughty ghosts….sad or happy ghosts.
In actual fact..ghosts are afraid of human beings…but can read your heart pumping…regular or frighten.
Once he/she sense you are frighten….that ghost will go on a happy mood to frighten you to death and be his/her deadly friend.
So never be afraid…and no ghosts will haunt you.
But some ghosts are so powerful…who studied the art of mind controls in their living life….they can be very dangerous.even dead..
So when all UMNO b devils died of old age…plenty powerful hungry ghost around Malaysia.
We must be sincerely religious and all those UMNO b and BN ghosts will fly away to Timbuktu..lead by Mahathir to start a ghostly political party controlling worms and shit eaters there…..HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Events and history of how we got Independence.. published at Malaysiakini are very interesting.
As usual…that 86 year old devil can twist and will never change.
It is a fact….Communists contributed alot to our Independence by fighting the British and the Japanese…and all details have been repeated over and over again…incase Malaysians easily forget.

I merely said the communists contributed alot to Malaysia’s freedom and history must be corrected.
I never say….Communists did more than our beloved Tunku and I did say…it was correct at that time…Communists were left out to unite our country as adviised by the British to Tunku.
But it is totally wrong not to allow Chin Peng return to Malaysia….and this is the classic example..UMNO b cannot even be humane and compensate towards a Malaysian Chinese hero….and that is a fact.
It must always be race and religion dirty politics….firm and tight grip.

The word “Communist” was created by US and Britain…to brainwash the whole world.
In true sense…they are Freedom Fighters with no class distinctions….fighting for freedom…all the same.
Study how Mao Tze Tung chased out warlords …Emperor and freed China…and know what Communists mean in the real true sense.
Why after 55 years…Najib is promoting “1Malaysia”?…which we know is just mere slogan to fool Malaysians.
You see…if UMNO b…cannot divide and rule…they are finished.
And if Chin Peng is so call pardoned and allowed to come home…all the 55 years of telling half truth history to Malaysians in history books…will be exposed.
In any case…PR Govt…. will correct everything one by one…for sure..

    Phua Kai Lit,

Just discovered your last comment on ‘no boycott’. It’s been getting harder in retrieving comments these days in this forum.

It seems ‘BOYCOTT’ is no more an issue as we can feel negotiation of seats allocation is hotly put on drawing board. But, the contentious issue here is who to blame if one intend to participate even glaringly know the mahjong game is a dirty one?

Seriously, the 13th GE will be the dirtiest one.
