Establishing a system!

China celebrated 100 years of liberation from dynastic rule this month , on the 10th of October.

100 years ago, on the tenth of October, The Qing Dynasty was overthrown. Tongmenhui, a anti-Qing anti-dynastic organisation with Dr. Sun Yat Sun at the helms, organised a number of uprising prior to the double ten date; and a number of allied organisations also  organised uprising on their own. Unfortunately, all failed.

In 1911, a few months before the actual successful uprising in WuChang, Tongmenhui organised an uprising in Guangzhou, under the leadership of Huang Xin, a man I regarded with the same respect as Dr Sun. Unfortunately, that uprising failed and 72 martyrs were killed ( actually more than 100 were killed). They were buried in Huang Hua Kang. (“I had the fortune to read one of the letters written by one of the martyr , Lin Jue Min, to his wife just prior to his last journey to take part in the uprising, and I was moved to tears. That was in my high school days.)

Many uprising failed, but it really rocked Qing government and awakened the people of CHina to be their own boss, to helm their own destiny. Many people in CHina then joined Tongmenhui as secret members, and these included many in the Qing army , many officials and students.

Following the failure of GuangZHou uprising, another uprising which was actually not planned by Tongmenhui, but rather by the new army personnel based in Wuchang, became successful, and they took over the city of Wuchang. The uprising was a catalyst for many other similar ones which occurred all over China, and the revolutionaries joined forces together. Dr Sun, who at that time was in US, came back to CHina, and was sworn in as the Provisional President of the Republic of CHina.

At that time, Qing still had  a relatively strong army, BeiYang Army under Yuan Shi Kai, compared to the armies of the revolutionaries.

Yuan could have beaten the revolutionaries in Hankou, but after capturing Hanyang , he stopped.

Negotiation took place and Yuan hinted through intermediaries that he could force the QIng Emperor to abdicate, but he would only do so, if he was made the president

Dr Sun, a selfless person by all counts, did not hesitate, and he offered to resign to anyone who could force the Qing to abdicate , so as to avoid a full-scale civil war.

Comrades within Tongmenhui were all against him relinquishing his presidency to someone who was as cunning and as untrustworthy as Yuan.

But Dr Sun famously said that in order for democracy to flower in China, to take roots in CHina, they needed to establish a system first, and it was not important who should be the president.

In his view, as long as the dynastic rule could be ended, and a civilian could be made president and head of the country, ,then even by giving the post to Yuan, it would be the first step of a journey of no return. Once that happened , he believed that the people of China would never want to go back to dynasty rule again. Since half of china was still under Qing, he would not mind to let Yuan be president, as long as the dynasty rule can be ended and a new precedence be set.

Once the system is established, even if Yuan decided to be Emperor again, it would be impossible for that to happen. True enough, Yuan did try to declare himself as emperor later on, but as soon as he announced it, people from all over China expressed opposition and provinces after provinces declared autonomy . Yuan had to abandon his emperor dream, but in the end, he died a unhappy death, when war was threatened against him.

That was the importance of setting precedence and showing people that even someone without the mandate of heaven or not the son of heaven can be head of a country.

History is for us to learn. The lesson here is that for the people here to be the real Boss, we must establish a system where there are 2 more or less equal choices. When one side is no good, we kick that side out through exercising our votes, and invite the other side in. When the other side is no good, we kick them out and re-invite the previous side to come back. Once a side is in opposition, they would have undergone self improvement and self cleansing, and emerge a better and trimmer party.

That is the way to establish a culture of accountability, transparency and clean government. If one side is corrupt when in power, they can be sure that they would be voted out. By competing each others for people’s support, a government would become cleaner, more accountable and transparent.

Like what Dr Sun has said, in order to do that, to have a system of 2 parties vying for our support, we must establish the system first, and there must be a precedence of another side coming to power.  Dr Sun knew Yuan was a devil, but he relinquish his post to Yuan, in order to establish a precedent , and set the path for a system to take root. It was about letting a concept be shown to be achievable- the concept  of a nondynastic rule, after more than 2000 years of feudalism.

Similarly, to want to have a 2 party system in Malaysia  is not about supporting BN or PR; it is about the future of Malaysia. It is not about Anwar or Najib; it is about our own children. It is about a future where our children can really be their own Boss.

To do that, we must have a 2 party system, and let the power that be know that people no longer need to be GRATEful to the leaders, since the leaders are elected representatives of the people to manage the affairs of the country FOR THE PEOPLE..

Me too, when i am in form one or two. Especially this: “吾作此書,淚珠和筆墨齊下,不能書竟,而欲擱筆” (Ink and tears flow in equal measure as I write. Time and again I have had to put my pen away, unable to finish)

If i am not wrong, Lin Qingxia act as Lin Jue Min wife in one movie about the event in late seventies?

Dr. Hsu. Dr Sun was a Chinese patriot of the highest order. Many a time, in the history of a nation, a great patriot come along and chose the right path for the nation. Dr. Sun held the destiny of China in his hand and he did right. I wonder where China would be if he did otherwise and prolonged the Ching Dynasty.

Similarly, at the end of the American Revolution, George Washington could had make himself King. And we would have a different world. But he did not and went back to his farm.

We are at the cross road in our history. The destiny of the nation is in all our hand.
We all have a choice now. Which road do we take.?

It is clear that the road for us to take is to firmly establish a system of 2 party system and for BN to lose for at least one term.

Only that way, can cleansing begins and a system of transparency and accountability be established.

So the next election is very important. If you are sick of the greed and the rots, throw them into wilderness for at least one term, let them repent and reform.

Dr. Hsu. You are right. The destiny of Malaysia is in our individual hands. We have two paths in front of us. One to to greatness and a good future for our children and their children. The other the road to suffering and unhappiness. Never in the history of a nation is the future so clear and open to us to choose. Our generation will be blamed if we make a bad choice. I hope each and every one of us is a patriot and make the right choice.

I have no issue of a two Party system. But I’m against blind extreme partisan politics. We get nowhere with this. What I want to see is for both parties to compete for our benefit and interest. I want more than this. I want the incentives and disincentives of politics be changed to our betterment. Right now both are just the same. They can only talk and condemn others of what they also do.

Ps doc, there’s a major issue raised by tmi on the Muslims march this Saturday. Will you be writing on this in particular on the right to assemble? Are we saying yes or no to these demonstration? There’s an issue of value which we can argue.

A good idea of having a 2party system in this country.

But for this system to work, BN has to be the first to move out, and let PR govern for 5 years. Afterall, the people have not tasted the governance of PR, but is fully familiar with and tasted the ways of BN.

Then the people will decide on its performance , competence, accountability, transparancy, and whether they are just and fair in managing the affairs of the nation.

Thus the power will come from the people and of the people too.

If this happens, it will be a new beginning for the country, perhaps a kind of Renaisance for the good of the nation.

Let the will of the people be done.

The 2 party system was born at the 12th GE.
Both parties are not the same.
    It’s like comparing…chock and cheese…….totally different.
After the 12th GE….we are seeing ….reading and experiencing so many things that we have not seen before…….so much so…from day one of Najib’s leadership….it is promoting…defending…provoking…threatening…instigating…and defending with his life….to see UMNO b stay in power.
Why so…because BN and PR are totally different.
    Now we have a choice.
Now we begin to feel the power of votes and People Power
The laying of a the foundation..for 2-party system …already done.
It’s the 13th GE that Malaysians are eager to change and let PR govern for once….to get rid of corruptions and double standards.
First thing first…change the government and see the differences.
Lets not compare Americans with Malaysians.
US is far far ahead of us in so many things.
Yes…Li Li Fa….it is Renaisance period for Malaysia and Malaysians never had it so good before.

Even my Malay friends knows this

I was quite surprise then since I read in NST
Malay votes are firmly behind Umno
I asked one of them why
He smiled and winked at me 🙂
    I smiled back
    Good sign for Malaysia

More states will go under Pakatan
That’s for sure, he told me that

There is a stone wall in China… erected by Dr. Sun…with his words carved …expressing his gratefulness to Malaysian Chinese from Malacca and Penang sending money to help him liberate China….from tyrants and corrupted warlords.

Thousands lined up to walk the broad steps up a mount to pay their respect to this leader, who had also visited Malacca and Penang. Infact, Penang has a mini museum dedicated to him.

Thank you for your write that recalls this memory and the great work Dr. Sun had done for his country. Much to learn from him.

Many Overseas Chinese returned to help Dr.Sun fight the corrupted warlords….earning the name as Boxers..which we call Freedom Fighters now.
However these people can be bought with money too…and what is today…of China is getting rid of one evil…replacing it with another.

We have this in Malaysia too…..which we call frogs…but thank God…few and all are exposed ..giving Malaysians a true picture…what we are today.
But the resent Devils are much better than the previous warlords.
    One must remember..it was 550 million ….grown to 1.2 billion population..right now.
It would have been 2 billion had the Govt not take actions to children for each family….one only…no more for decades.
In Malaysia…UMNO b encourages Malays to produce as many children as possible….to bring down the minorities to a significant lower %.
The more growth in population…the worst it has become….for our crooks know only how to steal ..get rich and enjoy with false titles….and never really care for their own race sincerely.
What do you expect from cunning thieves?
Back to the early 20s….so many corrupted warlords landed in Malaysia and all over SEA with millions and set up businesses…especially the food business.
Malaysia today is heading for bankruptcy under UMNO b,
That’s a fact..for these people do not know how to manage a country…and only know how to brag….blame others…real real cunning bastards they are.

What Prof Phua reported about China of today is true.
However…we must focus out thoughts for a better Malaysia…and in these sense….a 1.2 billion county’s problem cannot be compare to a country with 27 million like Malaysia.
The tinnier the country is ..the easier to solve problems.
And our tiny country is so rich with natural resources….yet more difficult to manage than China.
All decent sincere Malaysians who love the country and people understand perfectly why.
It is natural to have selfish people who think of themselves more than others.
But we are talking about our children’s future and they cannot be divided as HAVES and HAVE NONE…like what our Govt keep doing so,
Do that…Freedom Fighters will act as they see fit.
That’s why….Najib is calling Malaysians all to defend PutraJaya from traitors.
Who are the traitors and who are the patriots…..have now become a political issue which Malaysians are laughing at Najib’s stupidity …so much so..every time he opens his mouth to talk….UMNO b looses more votes.
Lets compare a small country like Malaysia with equally small or even smaller like Singapore and see the sickening differences we are at.

Brief History oof SJK (C) Chee Wen

Chee Wen was established in 1939 in Sungai Tinggi, Kuala Selangor. It was founded by Mr. Sung Seng Woon, Mr. Lim Seng Tet, Mr. Chang Wa, and Mr. Tan Mun Yeen with Mr. Sung chairing the inaugural Board Of Governors meeting. As most of the local Chinese in Sungai Tinggi came from Hainan Island, the School was named after the eldest son of the eminent Soong family of China Mr. T.V. Song, a fellow I Iainanese and who was also the Finance Minister of China then. Due to the confusion of dialectic pronunciations, the school was spelt to read “Chee Wen”. Mr.T.V.Soong was also the eldest brother of the famous Soong sisters, Ai-Ling, Ching-Ling and May-Ling.

SRJK Chee wen was recently in the limelight for the wrong reason.

A group of people led by a former MCA YB wanted to change the school name to a Tan Sri who has donated a lot of money to the school. Many others were opposed to it, including Chinese NGOs.

The reasons for the name change is that the Tan Sri has helped the school a lot and some also cited that TV Soong, whom the scholl was named after, was a corrupt person.

The reasons against the name change were that if someone gave money to a school now, and the school uses his name as name of schools, it would start a precedence of rich people trying to outdo each others to have their names used as school names. When A donated to a school and the school named School A, and after a few years, B donated a bigger amount and wants his name to be the school name, how can the school be so commercialised and use B’s name , forgetting the efforts of A before? It is like Putra world trade becoming Mahathir world trade, and later on najib World Trade..

In the end, the controversy ended when the rich Tan Sri came out with a statement saying that his name should not be used and that he had never wanted his name to be used.

    1. France and Russia do not have the option of the English. The English had its revolution in 1066 AD. They fought their king and won, but kept the king
    2. The only route for France and Russia were also armed revolution. But this time they did eliminated the king and tsar – a different philosophy of different time.
    3. China would have to do the same. There was no option of keeping the emperor.

But I notice during this 100th celebration of the revolution, there is more and more article/opinion that questions the rational of the 1911 revolution, of course history has it course but the price to pay for the 40 years chaos in term of life and progress is tremendously huge. I think there is also element of emotion whereby some scholars believe that CCP did a bad job.

“The English had its revolution in 1066 AD. They fought their king and won, but kept the king”.

Please let me correct the above fact.

King Edward of England died on January 5, 1066 he left no heirs which ignited a three-way rivalry for the crown that culminated in the Battle of Hastings and the destruction of the Anglo-Saxon rule of England.

There were three people who were claiming for the throne. The leading pretender was Harold Godwinson, an advisor to King Edward. Harold Godwinson and King Edward became brothers-in-law when the King married Harold’s sister.

Across the English Channel, William, Duke of Normandy, also laid claim to the English throne when King Edward died. The Duke of Normandy justified his claim through his blood relationship (cousins) with King Edward.

The third rival for the throne was Harald Hardrada, King of Norway through some unheralded Viking treaty.

Harald Hardrada attacked England first to claim the throne but was defeated by the commoner Harold at York.

Later, William, the Duke of Normandy attacked England and defeated Harold at Hastings i.e. The Battle of Hastings. On Christmas day 1066, William was crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey, thus restoring their rightful King.

In a way, communism is a form of distorted democracy. Democracy in the sense that the leader is chosen by CC members of the party, who are in turn chosen by other members. So the leader is actually elected.

I say it is distorted because its membership is limited to certain classes of people, and those who are from ‘landlord’ or bourgeois classes are barred from membership, thus limiting the extent of democratic practises.

Countries ruled by Race based parties are likewise distorted democracy, since the leader of the race based party with the most seats are the Head, and since its membership is again confined to a certain ethnic group only, it is again a distortion.

But barring a true one man one vote system with all votes a carrying equal weight-age, most democracies are also distorted ones. Exceptions are those with presidencies elected by all people, with equal weight-age in each votes.. (USA is not since it is based on electoral college system).

Democratic practice is not the ideal system, but under the circumstances, it is the better system compared with dictatorship and absolute monarchies. There are so many ways to manipulate a democratic system, including gerrymandering and so on.

China is a communist state, but all in name only since the economic model is now more capitalist than anything else. Compared to the late 19th century (late Qing years), it is now a much stronger and much wealthier nation. But once capitalist model is used, class differences will inevitably arise, the rich will get richer, and the poor will get poorer.

It is up to the State to modify this capitalist model, undertaking certain social assistance to the less privileged groups. Aids however, in any situation, must be truly based on social strata, if not, it will definitely be skewed and hijacked by certain interests.

Corruption is the mother of evil in all systems, whether, monarchies, democracies or distorted democracies. LKY knew that and he started atacking corruption from DAY ONE with the results that corruption is now kept to a very low level.

One form of democracy that is more ideal would be the social democrats, which while practicing system of popular votes, will institute certain policies aimed at economic redistribution to eliminate the class difference between the bourgeois and the proletariat.

If you look at the constituion of Parti Gerakan, it is an advocate of social democratic practices, to ensure a fair and equitable society for all, and this is what had initially drawn me and many intellectuals to the party.

Back to Chinese communism, I think it is better than the dynastic system like the Qing.. At least, an ordinary person, if he is from the ‘correct’ background, can rise to become head of the country, unlike in a dynastic rule, the choice of successors are limited to a few of the off-springs of the emperor. If none of them are good, then the dynasty would be doomed. If an elected leader is bad, he can be chucked out, but if it is dynastic rule, the emperor will reign till his death whether he is good or bad..I think that is what made Dr Sun opt for a republic rather than continuing the dynastic rule.

Phua, nice article. a fast one.on China.

Initial stage, communist like Liu Shaoqi and Zhou Enlai want to make urban as their base, however Mao is insightful enough to assert that rural and peasent is the way to go, his strategy work and that is why he gain the support to become top leader, Mao justification is due to his grasp of China history and particularly on Taiping rebellions.

However, wrt social restructuring, he did make some mistake, but he is a communist and his ideal is the major aspiring reason why communist win the war. to Liu, Zhou and Deng, communism is just a means, i think Hsu wrote about this before.

Most of the Tongmenhui senior members died in the Guagzhou uprising (HuangHuaGanf or Yellow Flower Mould uprising) that I mentioned aboe.

These martyrs were the educated, idealistic ones . Had they not been killed in a single uprising, then KMT’s history would have to be rewritten, and a minor leader like Chiang would not have risen up to helm the kuomingtang, and China. But on the other hand, Huang Hua Gang uprising directly inspired so many of the younger Chinese to rise up to overthrow the Manchus, thus it has always been regarded as an catalyst for the eventual success of the XinHai revolution (another name for Wuchang Uprising above).

Had Dr Sun refused to make deal with Yuan, China would probably be still a dynasty under Yuan who with his army could have made himself into another Cao Cao (of the three kingdom fame). It would of course likely to be a story of Two Nations, one in the North by Yuan, one in the South by KMT.

But by making deal with Yuan, China inevitably had to endure many decades of warlord-ism, but the final results is that China is now stronger and richer than would have been, if it had been under a corrupt dynasty under Yuan and his family. Yuan would probably cut deals with Japan and not go to war with them, so history of China would be very different.

I think Dr Sun made a very wise move to cut a deal with Yuan, so that the system of a civilian can be head can be established and with the system in place, ensured that China would never go back to dynastic rule again. It is also a way to ensure that Mainland China was not split into 2 nations..After-all, Dr Sun was also a nationalist, his love for his country made him sacrifice so much ( compared to the ”sacrifice” lately by my former head).

Put our leaders in Sun’s shoes, would anyone, including the likes of Lings, Lims, Kohs, Chuas, give up their power to make way for a new system? I have told Lim and Koh about the merits of Gerakan coming out as an independent party from 2006 onwards, but they would not even give up their ministership, let alone thinking about setting up a new system.

I agree with klm’s earlier comment that Dr Sun, like George Washington, is a patriot that surfaces only once in a long while..

The whole idea of this post is to remind those who read this blog about the need to start a new system, the 2 party system, and all other things being secondary. If Dr Sun can give up his post to give to a untrustworthy person like Yuan, why can’t we all give a chance to PR and let establish a 2 party system?

Regardless of what the cyber-troopers may be saying, we , the people of our generation, must start the Change first.. We owe it to the nation, the people, and future generations to opt for CHANGE.. With change may come certain turbulence (like China going through many years of warlord-ism, most of the warlords being generals of BeiYang army),but ultimately, after calm returns, the country would be a better place for our children and posterity..

Those who agree with me please try to convince your friends about this need to put a system firmly in place. Quote the story of Dr Sun.

Nice for Prof Phua to bring the subject up and Dr.Hsu’s opinions and thoughts are great.
Huge International companies investing millions..need to very careful not to invest in the wrong country.
They had to have accurate information of social.economical….political situations …logistics.. power supplies…and man power intelligence.
Right now…Malaysia is at the bottom list of SEA countries for investments.
However….they will take calculated risks like investing in Penang where they know they need not waste time over red tapes and corruptions to get things done.
Back to China…Chiang and Mao objectives are totally different.
Had Chiang succeeded to control China today….USA will have final say….and China will never be what China is today.
It will be US puppet against Russia.
US govt will make sure of that.
It’s religion again been involved. Chiang is a devoted Christian.
Mao is a Buddhist…..a free thinker.
Chiang’s was strong due to finance keep pouring in for him from American.
He failed instantly when US decided to cut off financing him.
You know what USA Govt was 60 years ago? They say yes or no.that’s it…so powerful.
Remember USA never lost a war….until in Vietnam….a wake up call for them…not be so arrogant and boastful.
China was never given a peaceful life by US.
It’s a country with 95% poor peasants…..that needed food .clothing…decent living conditions..houses …clean sanitary systems …more than anything else…and Mao understood it all perfectly.
The future of a country depends on the people…not the Govt .
In China…people care poor. Lives are not that precious. Getting the country to better living conditions with no hunger ..or floods to destroy innocent lives..most important.
All done…and that’s what make China great. People are united..proud and happy.
CORRUPTIONS is worldwide disease….as money is the temptations of all evils.
It is the level of corruptions that we can presume..not that great and the Govt is taking serious actions that what makes China today.
Now sit back…and ask ourselves….why is Malaysia keep going backwards…with so much developments and Malaysians are so divided in thoughts….a truly disunited country under the present Govt.?

    Azmi Sharom said….

“It is strange that in the 21st century we are still having to face the problem of institutionalized racism.”

“Looking at our history, one can see why this has occurred. The combination of race-based politics and poorly interpreted constitutional provisions have meant that the idea of racial and religious superiority has been allowed to grow and become the norm rather than something undesirable and out of the ordinary.”

    My own comment…
I feel that the future of our country lay in the fusion of multi ethnic race. We have to have a new entity. We need to reinvent our identity and history for the sake of the future generation. We must promote and encourage the ideology of multiculturalism – a comprehensive symbiosis, with cooperation and partnership on policy, economy, demography and culture in order to integrate the Malaysian populations. Can PR do that? Can PAS dissemble of camouflage the Doctrine of Hudud and Sharia Law?

    Azmi Sharom said….

“If this country is to have any future as a true nation, the time has come for those who believe in the ideals of equality, ideals which were held by the political founding fathers of the country as well as the traditional Rulers of that time, to stand up and be counted.”

“To not be cowed by the bigots and to say that this is our country and it stands on noble humanitarian ideals, not opportunistic racialist thinking.”

I will vote for PR even if they are as bad as BN. It’s not about voting angels to parliament, as Dr Hsu said, it’s about creating a 2 party system. A 2 party system cannot be created unless BN loses power at least once.

We have seen how BN’s behaviour has improved a little with the threat posed by PR. But it is only temporary and far too little. As soon as the threat is removed BN will be back to its old ways.

I fear to think what the future holds for Malaysia if BN continues to rule. The economy will continue to decline with racial policies, cronyism, rent seeking and corruption, income will be stagnant as inflation rises and our human capital will continue to flee. Meanwhile we are living beyond our means and oil is running out.

For sure we will become a maid exporting country. Maybe in another 10 years. There is a good chance we will end up like Zimbabwe. It’s not a pretty picture but I can see nothing to change the picture unless there is a political change.

Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon today defended this weekend’s mass rally to protest alleged Christian efforts to convert Muslims, saying Muslims too had the right to express their views. What is wrong with this man?

Purely from history context, the greatness of Washington is his declining for a third term that set a precedent of two term limit, and work along with other founders to create a senate, that employ “check and balance”, and to preludes “tyranny of the majority”. I believe Sun share similar vision, but he is not giving up power willingly, he actually does not have much choice. Sun understand that political power in China at that time derived from gun, that is part of the reason he started up Whampoa Military Academy, and the chief beneficiary is Chiang, being the first commandant, he finally become the Generalissimo.

Whether China under KMT would become American puppet, maybe, I don’t know. Since I am pretty anti West and USA, I share the sentiment, but if given a choice, perhaps the Chinese prefer to be one, many of them seem to be yearning the freedom enjoy by Taiwanese and South Korean. And I like to add on, Chiang Ching-kuo is actually very close to Russia.

It is not up to few of us to decide who should be given the chance, that is the good and bad of democracy. PR cannot win just by repeating the claim that BN is bad, beside racial, regionalism and history context, there are many that feel grateful to BN, therefore for PR to win, they must do what is right. This is a chicken and egg scenario, PR already secure more or lee 30 to 40% of votes, and we all know they need at least 55% to win, so the question is can we gain the additional 20 to 25% of votes by telling how bad is BN? Do we expect the rural folks fully grasp the benefit of 2 party systems? I doubt that very much. The crux is PR must perform much better than expect, how to ensure that, I don’t really know, but I think to criticize their mistake, to let them know what is right and what is wrong, and to tell them the people expectation, I tbelieve all this would help.

It will be phantom votes and frauds to carry BN through….but that will not be that easy now.
It should be interesting to watch Pekan voters throw Najib out.
In 12th GE…he just scrap through with a mere 300 majority….yet appointed as PM..and we all know why….don’t we?
Najib has alot to loose ..more than anyone in UMNO b…and Mahathir needs a desperado to protect his sons..where he can trust and do as he says from behind…still ruling. .

    Dear Rhan,

Some of us are more whites than yellow or brown! The whites said the western civilisation is the axis of civilization so the world must follow them. The Chinese would say the Chinese civilization is the greatest because the Great Wall of China is the only earth structure that can be seen from heavens. The Indians would say that the Kamasutra is the best art of making love. And of course the Muslim would say Islam is the only way of life. In a Malaysian context how do you solve that?

If “azan” is part of the Islamic culture since time immemorial why make it an issue. If someone wants to find God/Allah in his/her own way why make it an issue? If stoning to death is a divine order that has not changed in regard to time and place why make it an issue? If to be burnt alive in hellfire or to live with a harem of concubine for the rest of one’s eternal life is a choice why can’t we let them chose quietly and softly?

If hudud and sharia law are for muslims only why should non muslim say no to hudud? If there is no compulsion in religion why make apostasy and proselytization and issue? I am not an expert on culture and/or religion. My little understanding of them would only lead to distorted thinking and imagination that I believe could stir emotional tu quoque and ad hominem attacks. Btw.. there are many hypocrites, drinkers and fornicators who doesn’t pray five times a day who would be putting on their skull caps and attend the “Himpunan Sejuta Muslim” for reasons best known to them.

In our quest for one Malaysian race, honestly and thoughtfully, there should be frequent inter-faith meetings and dialogues, inter-race marriages, and foster-parents/nannies should be promoted and encouraged. Only idiots would oppose to that but (My dearest Rhan) you know that sometimes once in a full moon we too are ignorant bigots and hypocrites… -:)

“The more you ignore me, The closer I get”….. I would like to subscribe to that.

Najib is desperate to get more votes.
Is that not a clear sign that BN is desperate and PR is ready for 13th GE.
“General election around the corner” spoke by Najib….so many months ago.
    Najib’s English is excellent.
“around the corner” said by him….months ago is a new interpretation to the express..”around the corner”…meaning not sure when.
That is a clear sign…he knows PR will win.
And one more….Mahathir told Najib to delay until the last day of his appointed PMship…why?…also Najib sure to loose….so better enjoy the appointed and forget about being elected.
Imagine the smartest of the lot .told Najib to delay 13th GE….while Najib knows…the longer he delays…his Budget speech alone will prove he is a liar .and this time…lying to all Malaysians.
In UMNO b …for at least past 5 years….it is a party split into three groups.
It is only showing unity because all the kingpins are corrupted and all must try to avoid corruption charges and all must do their parts to win 13th GE.
And there we see..as if UMNO b is so strong.
What we are seeing are the Ministers…newspapers….keep showing how strong UMNO b is.
It’s a performance by the band of rouges and thieves…not more than 50 of them.
Amongst their so call 2 million members….44% will vote for Oppositions….if you take Najib’s popularity… from 72% down to 56%.
    All signs are there.

I deleted the parts that are considered vulgar. The ones that i deleted is someting i cannot comprehen, but i think it has uncivilised meaning.

Even to our enemies, I believe that we need to be civil. What do calling people names, A***holes, F***, etc achieve? It achieves nothing but ‘seronok’ sendiri.

In politics, I have been stabbed from the back, played out times and again, but I have never resorted to vulgarity or even finger pointing..In Buddhism, even a killer can be forgiven if he changes, and repents. In other religions as well.

To be fair, I have deleted yours, cilipadi, streetfighter and someone elses’ comments (many others) which contain ‘vulgar’ wordds or phrases that i think have constituted to vulgarity.

I hope the rules of this blog can be observed, and since I am a working person, some of the vulgar comments may have gone unnoticed, and unmoderated, but do not view this as being bias to anyone.

I prefer to seek harmony without uniformity rather than Malaysian race, the reason is as what you have articulated well in your first paragraph, and I think this too reflect the world we now live in, any faction that try to dominate could only lead to conflict, I know it is easier said than done. Huntington assert that American must goes back to WASP, while many West Europe nation start to question the viable of multiculturalism, however we also see Scandinavia is relatively success ito manage their race relationship and economies, thus I think as long as we strive toward better communication and understanding, the future is not that dim.

Our value must be consistent. You can’t defend ones right to assemble when it is in your interest but oppose it when when not. KTK was right in this instance.

I agree that there must be freedom of peaceful assembly..

Just like even though I am all for the abolition of ISA, I never agree to use ISA on IBrahim Ali or the likes.

    We must be consistent.

Having said that, the government in agreeing to let Himpun gathers, must not display double standard, and must allow other peaceful demonstration to take place. Why Bersih was not allowed? OK, may be the thinking is now different from July, then why was the green demonstration in Kuantan not allowed? This happens recently.

There must not be favouritism and double standard.

Himpun, too, must not ridicule and belittle other religions when they hold the demo, since attacking another religion will be like throwing a gauntlet and this would harm religious harmony.. Gather by all means, but do not attack other religions..

    Dear all

    A no of Issues raised:

    1) for us to be rid of ethnicity profiling and prejudices we must necessarily abolish vernacular and religious schools. The policy of segregating our young by races and religion cannot be correct.

    2) I don’t think the perception there are overwhelming support for PR is correct. Don’t believe a bit that LKS Hadi or Anwar think as such. If they do it’s to their peril And bn’s gain. For instance the erosion of Malay support for PAS has necessitated for to reassertion it’s stand in hudud. Now the failure to back himpun will again question it’s commitment to islam. Pas cannot have two rhetorics to urban and kampung folks. People can see this. So it’s a yoyo stand by pas reflecting the unsteady influence it has on Muslims votes.

    3) the concept of two party system is good. But actually I’m for a strong good opposition. It does not have to be two party to make effective opposition. Even in US there’s a third challenger for us presidentials. UK always have more than 2. I note in Malaysia coz bn is strong opposition needs to unite. But I’m not and think we should not be emboldened by it. It’s what is the value and principles they stand for and ability to counter check the opponent what is important.

To this I think pr has done pretty well. They’ve managed to push bn to repeal ISA, to come up with it’s own budget, to push for right to assemble, to push Najib to be people friendly and tolerant of dissent, make government on defensive on corruption etc etc. It’s a good development. On this score both pr and bn are competing for our interest. Budget shows how similar pr and bn is.

My main complain is on the values held by political parties, pr stand on objective media and shadow cabinet. On values I think since the polical incentives and punishment is the same for bn and pr, they won’t be much changed. Similarly with objective news reporting which pr and its pro pr news aggregator play the same game as bn. But my main regret is the inability to form a shadow cabinet. If they had done that we would have a solid democratic base. Our debates will be done in parliament rather than the perception based debate in media where the rules of engagement in parliament is more responsible. We would know what is the stand of each parties. We would know how they work.

I really like to see our mps engage and fight for our interest in parliament than outside. Their stands are recorded and can be made accountable. As is everyone speak whatever they like misleading the public. And worse our debate got stuck at first level like lynas and budget. We can’t make informed decision and hold our mps accountable.

If pr had this shadow cabinet it would have certainly change the politics here.

Sally, sorry for being inquisitive, the reason I asked is because not many would advocate “inter-race marriages”, it sound familiar to me.

A true story, my best friend relationship finally broke up because his girlfriend and her family have the impression that my friend lack sincerity to become a Muslim, I think he merely wish to find out more. They almost make it until back to Malaysia. While my colleague’s brother has no issue, he care very less, marry his sweetheart and live happily, just that he still live like a Chinese, eat like a Chinese and drink like a Chinese from time to time. Ironic isn’t it?

Ellese, I agree with most of your point except the one on vernacular school. We debate on this before so I briefly reply. VS is just part of the legacy, it existence is not a deliberately act. Government be it BN or PR must tackle this tactfully. I personally think we should let NS and VS compete, and allow inclusiveness and quality education back to NS, the moment we achieve this, VS will naturally diminish.

    Dear doc,

On double standard, please note again that they have acceeded to have it at the stadium which departs from bersih street demo. In that it is consistent.

Question to the public is whether we should regulate demo or not in terms of time place and content? What would be taboo? Invariably a demo is held because one is not happy. Should that right be depressed and to which extent? Should the seditious law parameter be applicable? Who decides? What if demo against Malay privileges? Demo against vernacular schools? Demo against king? Who decides?

I live in Shah Alam where the so-called “Muslim rally” was held.

According to accounts it is a failure with only 5,000 showing up.
Serves them right — the event, launched with the ulterior motive of
stirring up tension between Muslims and Christians — that it was a failure.

The good Muslims (Muslims of goodwill) stayed away from this event.
The people who attended are most probably the Perkasa fascists, the religious extremists
and those bussed in by UMNO/BN.

By the way, I will vote for my MP who is a moderate Islamist from PAS
and I am not a Christian and not a Muslim.

I was in Turkey recently and note that Turkey is ruled by a progressive,
moderate Islamist political party under the admirable Prime Minister Erdogan.

Some people are using the narrow aspect of Islam for popularity and to gain political mileage. That’s not the Islamic way. PAS said no to ‘himpun” and what is Hassan Ali doing there? Media attention? To embarrass PAS? Lompat si katak lompat? Serve him right.. one of five thousand over expected one million. What a shameful way to exit.

PAS play this double game. They allowed their youth to attend but not the rest. So they can tell the rural folk that they support it but to urban folk they are moderates.

Some people are really gullible pro pr news aggregator readers. Phua for example claimed that those attended are mostly “Perkasa fascists, the religious extremists and those bussed in by UMNO/BN.” nothing can be true to these as I bet he does not know them. He’s again writing by categorisation of events and people. Perhaps due to either spinning or reading without question the pro pr news sites.

I’ve met some of their leaders and they are not political. They are Muslims of good character and humble. MI and pro pr news sites purposely painted them negatively without basis so a negative impression is made. They’ve never been moved by perkasa nor pas youth nor bn but pr news site purposely taint it to create a negative perception. And a number gullibly follow it.

We need more objective media. On the right we have Utusan and on the left TMI , chronicles and the like. Both playing a game of deception and manipulation which even those highly qualified can be fooled.

Waste of time debating this academic who does not have the courage to identify himself/herself fully when writing on serious academic and intellectual issues.
At last people like Chandra Muzaffar have the courage to put his name to

    Phua,

I need to correct one inaccuracy and a misleading statement. On the inaccuracy I did not accuse you using of vulgar words. It’s for cilipadi.

On the misleading spin, din did not give warning and cause/ readon for deleting my comments. He just can’t take contrarion arguments and were protecting his cronies who went for verbal animal abusive name calling. He did not allow me the right to reply. You must realize by now a lot of people scream for freedom of expression but cannot take criticism. Din is one of them. He is an utter rubbish hypocrite unable to argue and debate. That’s why he mostly copy paste. Intellectually my gut feel is that you are much superior than his.

Finally. on using proper name, please note cilipadi streetfighter monsterball etc etc didn’t use their names as well. Why? Simply because that’s the culture of Internet. In fact This has propelled pr in the media war. So if you don’t want to reply please maintain your stand. People still see in the Internet you’re avoiding answering most probably due to the inability to response. And by the way I’m not an academic. That’s a false conclusion by you.

It’s a pity your life and environment in your adopted country are full of vulgarities that you don’t realize how uncouth and uneducated you are. When pushed to the wall you have resorted to personal attacks and vulgarities. This is a reflection of your upbringing and probably the values you adopt in your family. Just take a step back and look at the man in the mirror. Try tackling the issues than call people name like “s***”, “a@@@” etc etc or employ categorization method to deflect your own weaknesses. As you can see it does not solve one bit. At this blog I’ve refrained to reply in kind and will retort like this unless the rules change. So have a bit of decorum and make this site a place where courteous exchange of ideas flourish.
