My music & hobbies

pianoplaying.jpgI am a self taught pianist. I started learning the piano at the ripe old age of 45 after seeing all my children playing very beautiful piano pieces. I used a computer program called “Teach yourself piano”. It was very rudimentary and teaches very basic  and simple things. It was very tough without a teacher. I have to remember which notes on the score correspond to which keys and have to try to coordinate my pair of old stiff and sticky hands,  at the same time, have to take care of the pedals. It was one of the toughest things. Glad to say, I can play quite well now, at least you wouldn’t cover your ears when I play. This proves that “when there is a will, there is a way”. I have taped a short recordings for your listening pleasure. I didn’t play well because I was quite nervous when someone is pointing a vidoe cam at me.

The digital world has enabled all of us to be an author, a publisher, a commentator . The technology is going to change at an even faster rate so all of us have to keep up.

    Btw….your video was great! ^^

Its not an easy job to be posting your video on youtube.com…and not to mention even recording it alone! =O

    Just a suggestion though 😉
Now, that you have got your basic structure right (your structure is really good for a selftaught pianist =O) you might want to look into perfecting your rhythm pace and also in adding emotions into your playing, instead of the usual just playing keys, you are now learning to “sing” with the piano ^^
One way to do that is to : just bang on the piano 😉 just try and play a song using chords and forming your own melody…Open your playing style up to free it…
Once you free up playing, you realise you can play any emotion and song to the pro ^^

The difference between a person who memorizes and who just plays the piano statically and those who free up themselves to the TRUE piano-playing is very very obvious. Wish you all the best in that aspect! ^^

P.S someone once told me: “playing the piano is like having sex =X”
Once you start and try, you will discover more and more and finally understand what TRUE piano-playing is about.

    Hi Doctor Hsu,
I accidentally found your website from google search while I was looking for the sheetmusic – Kirara. Right before that, I was just watching a few of your videos from youtube, and was really inspired by your “Self-taught” piano playing. How long have you being playing for?

Your website is very very very interesting. I think I will spend time to check it out whenever I am free.

By the way, thank you so much for all these sheet music. It’s so kind and nice of you to put so many of them up on your website.

Hi Mary Lee, thanks for your compliments.

I started learning piano on my own at the age of 45 a few years ago. Through a computer program and with a midi keyboard connected to a PC. I started with which notes corresponeded to which key, and from there, learn simple melody. I did it the hard way become I believe that when there is a will, there is a way.

I also learned IT on my own and I am now among one of the most IT literate among my contemporaries.

Learning is a life long process.Never stop learning as it keeps you young and gives you hope .
I hope to hear from you more often, especially the feedback on how o improve this blog.

I count myself lucky that I bumped into your blog. I found that we have the same interests and thinking in many ways. That includes the fact that I also learned to play piano through a computer program minis the midi keyboard. Perhaps, you may wish to email me where to get one of the midi keyboard so that I can play as well like you.

For years I was trying to have friends that share the same piano playing interest, but failed. So wonderful, isn’t it, computer and internet technology. I wish one day, I can meet you in person. Please email me. Thanks.

Hi Dr Hsu, you are such an encouragement. Seeing that you are one of the most IT literate among your contemporaries & that you can play piano by (self-taught) have really convinced me that it’s possible to learn the piano myself with having expensive lessons which I used to take for about half a year.

You are such a inspiration and you are so right about will power & life long learning, nothing is possible without it.

By the way, I think your blog is awesome. It’s rare to have doctors to have the time (as they are very busy) and being so friendly and interested in offering/sharing what you have to others.

BTW, I’m picking playing piano again as well. I want to post my playing as well but I’m not as IT savvy, and not sure what kind of criticisim I would face. Doc….I admire your self taught achievement in playing the piano. I tried ….even with tutor…played few weeks and lay off..then try again after few years….fingers got crammed..give up.
But I am self taught in playing the guitar.
So I guess it is back to basic PASSION to succeed in doing things.
I love fishes. I had one like yours…sold that big house and now have 5 tanks of fishes…but I love gold fishes..also not easy to keep them alive…but been doing that for more than 40 years.
Looking at the fish swimming in my office…does release my stress instantly.
And doc…have one in your clinic…a big tank with 9 goldfish swimming. A doc took my advice and got filthy rich….but he is really a good smart sincere doctor too.

Monsterball, I dont believe fish can bring wealth. It is more of a hobby, and to see the koi swiming, it gives me a sense of calmness and a feeling of back to nature.

If people want to earn big money, I always ask them not to take up medicine. Medicine is a calling, and you have to have that calling of helping people to make a good doctor.

If a person wants to be rich, it is better for him to go into business or even hawking.

Doctors earn a comfortable living, and many of doctors invested their money wisely and become quite comfortable.

I admire those who can self learn guitar like you. It is really not easy./ I for one, do not know how to play guitar.

Dr Shu, you’re marvellous ! Actually I’ve been dreaming my whole life to play piano, but I don’t have the chance. I’ve retired from the govt service merely two years ago. My only daughter is taking up music as part of her teaching course at a local University. And I’ve noticed that she’s make a lot of advance in her music lesson, reading the notes and all that. As such the urge came back to me to learn piano or keyboard. But at times I felt age is cathing up with me very fast. I’ve got one piano lesson software and I,ve been trying it on my notebook. It’s interesting. But I don’t have the piano or keyboard in the house. I thought of visiting the music shop in my town, but I felt it’s rather odd for me to hang around there.
I think I better get that cheap electronic keyboard which is aplenty at the supermarket.

You know what, before the Lord catch up with me I hope to play at least a song on the piano. And I think He’ll give me that last chance.

suhaimi, i am sure you can do it. Buy a keyboard which can be plugged into your computer, because that way, you can probably follow your lesson from a computer. Practice makes perfect. there is really no substitute for pratice.

Dont bother about other people. Age should not be a hindrance for learning.

There are also many good youtube video teaching very elementary piano lessons.

The key is you need to have a keyboard to practice.

Learning to play the piano is a challenge for mature age students. It can be difficult to find the time to practice – let alone to be able to practice enough to achieve the level of skill that may be the goal. You are to be congratulated for what you have achieved – and may you be an inspiration to other mature age students of the piano.

    Hi, Dr Hsu.

I also started learning piano at the age of 23.
I don’t know what made me do this, perhaps I’ve been longing to play beautiful pieces which I could only hear until today.

I don’t find any dificulties in reading notes; but keeping the right tempo seems to be very hard (semibreve, crotchet, etc). I’ve tried to use metronome, but the device seems to chase me and in the end cause a total mess. Can you please advise on how to cope with this problem? Oh yes, my fingers cannot run smooth; everytime I gp to another bar I always bang my finger and it sounds terrible.

I’m working now but I always try to practise at least one hour everyday. I have taken a course for one year and according to my teacher I have a good understanding since I always pass the lesson taught in previous week. The problem lays on my stiff hands (sigh).

    Thanks b4…

Marjan, i started at age 46 and with the aid of one computer program and a midi keyboard. The program is from voyetra , and teaches basic fingering.

fingering is important as piano tachnique depends a lot of your fingers and their positions. I find that those music scores with fingering a big help.

But nothing is more imprtant than practice. I play at least half an hour a day. Those days without my piano i feel so lost. I am a much better player now than the few videos here show. I have also bought a grand piano because grand piano sounds so much better.

i have also progressed to many classical music.

as for tempo, try to count when you play.

I’m glad to inform you that I have progressed a lot recently. I quiited my music school and now I’m hiring a private piano teacher. She udrestands my problem and in only one month I’ve been able to play smoothly although only simple songs (including classicals also) from Burgmuller book.

You know I have to reduce my spendings especially in the needs of a young woman like I am (no more pretty & fine dress, no more clubbing on weekends) because books & tutorial fee are quite costly. I’m only a junior staff at my office, I cannot afford all, I have to set my priority.

Never mind that, I shall be able to go back to the normal activities in one or two years.

    Atila,
yes, nice to know that you play piano… I learned it when I was almost 50, a few years ago. when I was young, my parents sent my sister for piano, since it was thought to be good for girls to be musical.. I did not get the chance as piano lessons were expensive.. SO i have to wait till a few years back to learn.

So do not be upset with your dad.. He might have misunderstood that you have no interest in music.

Save up and buy a keyboard which is not that expensive now, even a second hand one can be good if there is budget restraint. You have the basic and with a little practice , i am sure you will be very good, much better than those of us who learned on our own..

Music inspires me and I always feel relaxed after playing a few songs..So do go back to your piano.

    Dr. Hsu,
Thanks for your advice, will do so. I miss my Yamaha piano although some of the keys were yellowish, no longer white.

I remember, the older it gets, the tune gets better. Unless the string breaks.

Piano was my good-friend, where i expressed my feelings from the chair i sat to the keyboards, into the musical notes plus the pedals. I skipped grades, exams has always been merits & distinctions. Yup!! Hours of daily practices. Thanks to my piano teacher, Ms Yeoh, her name. One key missed, a ruler comes at my finger…Ouch!! no pain no gain!

I admire your fast learning Dr Hsu. Your fingers are so piano-keys friendly just like any of us who had piano teachers. I m lucky to have started young, i can still play now but needs polishing.

    Thank you so much.

    Hi Hsu,
I am 58 and I am a self taught clarinetist. I use the net to get all the info I want. I started playing 5years ago. Drove my wife and son crazy for years. I also play the piano(badly), the organ(long long time ago), the keyboard(still left unpacked after I came back from China in 08) and the saxophone(still fiddling with it). I like the clarinet best and you should hear me play Amapola, Fly me to the moon, Return to Surrento, roll up the barrel, I left my heart in S. Fris’co , La vie en rose. I play best when no one is watching me and I’ll fumble if I know someone is recording or listening to my playing. My wife is the best judge of my playing and I have yet to receive praises from her… yet. Best time of the life was when I played under the Highway bridges in Beijing. Me and my chinese friends were competing with the traffic noise, Ha ha. I wish I can do it here in Penang, somewhere….. I know of one penshioner in KL who plays th.e clarinet too. Self taught but I have yet to hear him play. Martin.. I hope you read this blog.

    Hi Dr. Hsu,
Your blog just made me decide to take up violin. I thought I am late at 38 but from your blog and all the replies, well, what the heck! I just know I feel empty without music in my life. Time to put some colour to it. Wish me luck.

    Mylife,Myway,

38 is not old. In fact it is never too old to learn anything. Your age is what you feel inside your heart.

I am very sure you will succeed in playing good violin in the not too distant future. If there is a will, there is a way.
    Bravo! Cheers!

    Dear Dr. Hsu,
Thanks so much to give people the hope to believe – to believe that WILL power can help, not only the ability/skill to develop itself, but aslo the help through sharing and being honest to share. I had dreamt of playing piano when I was young. But I didn’t have a chance until the 20s to start self-learning. I believe that if you like it you can play it – somehow, i like the music piece, but I cannot play it!! I cannot afford to learn from a teacher but your experience encourages us, the late-learner – to be brave to embrace LIFE, full of possisbilities and beauty, despite…so and so.
I wish I can enhance myself more in self-learning piano. I dream I can share the piano-playing with strangers in the street, when people are feeling down – like an idling piano in the streets, and some people around to play it for each other. thanks to give us the chance. I am just so lucky to browse by chance to meet your web page!! Thank you very much.

Learning is a life long process. I started learning piano at the age of 46 without teachers.
You can surely do it, but do not be disheartened if during the first few onths, you cannot play with 2 hands or coherently. Practice makes perfect. learn to play with one hand first, then the other hand, then very slowly, try both hands for a few notes at a time.

I am sure you can do it.

    Hi Dr Hsu

Such encouragement to many to see you handle the piano so impressively well in your video clips. Most inspiring to me is that you done all this self taught without a piano teacher.

I started playing western flute (Yamaha) learning classical pieces a year ago after my coronary by pass operation. The passion for music and wanting to achieve more and to widen the range of music. This led me to start learning, self taught to play the chinese dizi, xiao and most recently shakuhaci (japanese flute) through books and internet. How comforting and true for dear Glee to mention that late learner must not to be disheartened but brave to embrace life which is full of possibilities and beauty

Dear Dr, you have a awesome blog going with great humanity spirit and beautiful attitude in sharing music. if you have the flute music sheets for “autumn in my heart’ and “reason” please e-mail to me.
    Thank you very much.

    Dear music lovers
sorry i have not answer you fro sometime. Some of the songs you requested, I have not heard of, and thus would be an handicap to surf the net for those. It would be easier if you can provide the singer or the composer, whether they are japanese, korean or western.

    Dr Hsu,

You are an inspiration. From the many postings before this, I figure we may be about the same age, though I may be a few years older.

Like many of your readers, I too have always wanted to be able to play the piano, but never had the luxury to. I used to play the guitar with my brother in our teens (although not very well, just strumming chords). Recently a friend lent me his guitar, but I found it too time consuming and painful (too my stiff finger joints) to pick it up again.

You sound like a well balanced, decent human being, (hard to come by these days) and would be honoured if we could satrt some sort of communication by email or other means, to share our thoughts and experiences, but mostly for me to learn from you, if that is ok with you.

    rgds,
    Phillip

it’s very inspirational to see your fingers moving so swiftly on the keyboard, what more is that you are self-taught.

I have a suggestion for u though, try playing some happy and and light pieces and put it here … Readers will love those..

    Fiona,

I learned it thru the hard way, after I chance uopn a CD called “Teach yourself piano” in 1997, in IMbi Plaza. The CD teaches you which note correspond to which key in the keyborad, and they teach very rudimentary fingering and scale. So after learning those, I started using the simple piano lesson books (those learned by my children while they were in grade 1 and 2) and learn to play simple tunes.

the Cds in those days were small in storage so the Cd teaches very simple and basic things.

I think if you want to learn and if you have the determination, you can go to youtube (in my time, there was no youtube), type in simple piano lessons and there are many videos teaching you simple steps to play… Go through them and choose one that you are comfortable with.

All in all, there is only one advice: practice makes perfect. You must practice and practice. And if there is a will, there is a way to do. Once you overcome the initial coordination problems( to coordinate the left and right hands), you can play anything…. Of course to play is one ting , to master is another matter.

Dear Dr. Thank you so much for your generous sharing. I always want to have a IT knowledge at least at your level ‘ to develop a self-containing site to share the views and the angel-heart advice to people via a blog etc. Your website inspires me that I can do it as your words always encourage people to try to advance one-self, to enrich oneself…would you mind giving me some hints on how to do this of IT-knowhow – the criticalsteps in developing and learning the IT application of a blog like yours? Once developed, I will share the experience with others, like you do…I’m a dummy consumer in IT application only, not at all knowing how to START a personal blog…in your view, which way is easier for the dummy so that a dummy will have the courage to move on? Thank you for your sharing in advance, and most of all, thank you for your time. Time is more precious and you do share part of it with others in the net. THANK YOU!
