Former Gerakan KL State Chairman and former MP for Segambut, Dr Tan Kee Kwong, openly endorsed Anwar yesterday. He said he made this decision based on his personal belief and because he was so sick of the rotten and corrupt practices of BN.
Bravo! Dr Tan is my good friend and was instrumental in influencing me to joining Parti Gerakan. His father was none other than the Mister Opposition, Dr Tan Chee Khoon, and a founder of Parti Gerakan…
In the press conference yesterday, as reported in Malaysiakini Chinese edition, he mentioned that ANwar is the agent for change. As I have mentioned in my writings before, this is no longer about ANwar but about what Anwar represents, which is what Gerakan’s ideology is about.
I think Dr Tan should be lauded for taking this step.

After having read this post, I would like to highlight to the fellow readers here what has Dr. Koh said in response to the Kedah’s State Youth on calling the Party to pullout from BN at the Kedah Delegate Conference held yesterday: –
1): –
“Certain quarters had made the call for the party to leave the ruling coalition. But it was only a small number that made the call.”
“The majority of members still want the party to stay in the BN and help to revive and strengthen the coalition.” (NST 23/8/2008)
On what basis would Dr Koh may justify that the call for pulling out from BN representing only a minority members’ view? If I am not wrong, a similar call to pull out from BN have also been proposed by the Perak’s State Delegate Conference. Would he wants to see all of the party’s respected veteran leaving the party will he acknowledge the need to pull out from BN? or would he wants to see if eventually he is not giving any ministerial post will he consider the need to pull out from BN?

“For the current situation, the party members’ call to leave BN is feel good. But, if we leave BN and join PKR, we are merely the 4th party in the alliance, and its the smallest among all”

Don’t you all think he has missed the fundamental point to our party ideology, that is to fight for an equal and just society as opposed to the position of line-up within the roll of BN. No matter this party is 3rd or 2nd party within the BN, if the ideology of the party cannot be served, it is redundant.
Again, we have read some recent issues like “Demonstration against the Bar Council organising forum on conversion to Islam”, “The discontentment in opening up the UiTM to non-Bumiputra” and the “Secret meeting held between PAS and UMNO for the possible joint alliance”, have we listened any voices come from Gerakan? No! we didn’t! Gerakan is muted! How to expect Gerakan can strive to achieve its ideology?

Sure to be in S.Times…small write up only.
The trend is very clear…vast majority Malaysian Chinese and Indians are supporting People’s Party.
The Malaysian Malays are split between largely supporting UMNO and PAS….and keDAILan.
But group PAS and keDAILan supporters together..UMNO cannot have more than 65% of Malays support and most are UMNO registered members…..yet ..at least 10% of UMNO members are secretly voting for Anwar. They love their party….but not the leaders.
They know a change to unite is a must…and refuse race and religion politics.
To round out the percentage of Malaysians support..with no race distinctions…UMNO and BN…cannot have more than 35% ….right now.
UMNO is finished.
This is my personal opinion…not to be debated.

This got one UMNO minister hopping mad….saying Lim give datukship to kids.
I wish Lim will find more kidws and continue to do so….as UMNO can do that…make Najib a Datuk…about same age..and bulldoze him to be a minister….just because he is son of ex PM..Razak….no problem..even knowing he is a weird dude.

With the loss of party stalwarts like Tan, Toh and Lee Choon Wah and divisons calling for withdrawal from BN, Koh Tsu Koon is just deluding himself or making a brave show to his Umno bosses.
“Help to revive and strengthen the coalition?” How? The relationship between Umno and the rest of the component parties is not one of equals. Gerakan like the rest are out of the decision making loop. There’s little they can do to influence Umno.
The right thing for Koh to do is to call a referendum on whether Gerakan should leave BN. Otherwise the party will bleed until it becomes a shell of its former self.

Keing Hooi, these leaders care only for how many seats gerakan can be allocated the next round. Which is totally beside the point.
The point is, we join political party to realise the ideology of the party. And since now , Pakatan is fighting for this ideology, then why are we still so hard up on how many seats we can get the next round? Unless someone is still dreaming of becoming a federal minister, or Penang chief Minister.
Isn’t it more important to help the country achieve a fair and equal society and good governance than caring for how many seats we can get and so on. Which position we can get in the coalition and so on is not important…..
That shows how self centred they are, putting the interest of the party (=themselves) above the people. They are no longer fighting for the people. They are fighting to keep how many seats and so on.. That is why the Chief Mouth piece and senior member of KL said that ideology is no longer important, shocking me and all the KL members …
If what Gerakan fights for can be achieved by another party, then whether Gerakan still exists or not is no longer important. And allocation of seats are the least important , in my eyes..
They are still in self denial. Even if the next round, they are given back the 12 Parliamentary seats, I can tell u, they will lose every single one of them, even Malay areas like SImpang renggam.

I think this is relevant so I hope you don’t mind me reproducing Ong Kian Meng & Oon Yeoh’s write-up on why Gerakan should root for Anwar. (It is for the benefit of your readers who are not subscribed to Malaysiakini)
Gerakan has been in the public spotlight for the past few weeks, for reasons which its leadership would not have wanted. From the injunction taken out by a Gerakan leader to prevent the sale of a controversial book criticising former party president Lim Keng Yaik and acting president Koh Tsu Koon, to the proposal among the Perak Gerakan delegates to pull out of the Barisan Nasional, to former Gerakan state exco Toh Kin Woon’s endorsement of Anwar’s candidacy in Permatang Pauh and his subsequent resignation from Gerakan – it has not been a good couple of weeks for the party that once controlled Penang (for 38 years since 1969).
Even the one potential bright spot, the debate between Koh and the current Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng did not produce a consensus in favour of the former.
Gerakan is trapped between a rock and a hard place. It is playing the role of the opposition in its home state of Penang without having any seats in the state assembly. It is still part of the BN government at the federal level but it does not have any cabinet representation and only has a junior MP and an appointed senator as deputy ministers.
While Gerakan would never come out to say this, it makes political sense for them to secretly root for de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim to take over the government so that BN would be in the position of opposition at the federal level. Here’s why: It’s the best of the three options Gerakan has.
Should it join Pakatan?
Gerakan has three options in terms of its political future. Some have argued that it makes sense for Gerakan to leave the BN and join Pakatan Rakyat. After all, the ideals of Pakatan, on paper at least, are much more similar to Gerakan’s than that which is espoused by the BN.
Gerakan has prided itself on being the ‘conscience of the BN’ by daring to speak up on issues such as human rights, anti-corruption and multiculturalism. Why not join Pakatan where multiculturalism is much more apparent and where the language of human rights and anti-corruption is common currency?
The political reality is such that while parties within Pakatan such as the DAP and PKR might publicly welcome Gerakan into its fold, Gerakan would be totally sidelined in politically critical decisions including the all important allocation of seats at the state and parliamentary levels.
DAP would assert its right to contest in most of the Chinese majority seats and PKR would want to contest most of the mixed seats leaving Gerakan to pick up the remaining crumb. The option of joining Pakatan might seem like a good ideological fit but would leave Gerakan in an even weaker position politically, if this is imaginable.
Gerakan’s second option would be to leave the BN and not join Pakatan but instead strike it out on its own as a third party. The record of third parties striking out on its own in the Malaysian context or elsewhere has not been good. Pekemas did not survive beyond the departure of its founder, Tan Chee Koon. PBS found that it was much more difficult to survive outside the BN on its own and eventually capitulated and rejoined the BN.
Gerakan can only justify its existence as a third party if it can win back control of the Penang state government on its own. But this will be almost impossible given that they cannot win the Malay majority seats. Knowing this, there is no reason for the non-Malay voters to vote in a Gerakan representative when they could choose between a DAP or PKR candidate on the one hand or an MCA candidate on the other, any one of whom would stand a better chance of being in the ruling state government compared to Gerakan.
Only acceptable choice
Given these options, Gerakan is left with its most politically acceptable choice, which is to stick it out with the BN. However, if they had to choose between being in a BN coalition that was still in control of the federal government and one which is in the opposition, they would be wise to secretly root for the latter.
A BN that has lost power at the federal level would force it to adapt to life in the opposition and most importantly would force Umno to rethink how it wants to present its political message. Without experiencing life outside of government, there is little chance that the BN, as it is currently organised, will be able to deliver any of the substantive reforms which Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has promised time and time again.
The sidelining of Zaid Ibrahim, almost from the very beginning of his tenure as the de facto law minister in the PM’s office, is but a very small indication of the near impossibility of reforming the BN while it is still holds power at the federal level.
Kicking out the BN at the federal level is arguably the only chance that Gerakan has to introduce the elements of reform within the BN. It is also the only opportunity for the BN to do some serious ‘house cleaning’ since the loss of power at the federal level would be as a result of defections from the BN to Pakatan and would presumably be accompanied by further defections.
Only then, can Gerakan, as part of a rejuvenated BN, hope to take on a potentially complacent or perhaps ineffective Pakatan government to come back into power, both at the state and federal level.

I have foreseen Dr. Tan Tee Kwong doing this long ago. Dr. Tan himself was a ‘reluctant politician’ before being convinced to contest in Segambut.
It is only natural for a person with conscience to do likewise. More will follow suit for sure.
Thanks, monterball in offering me a lift to PP, but I am not a fighter of this type. I prefer to share my views to all readers, even if they are pro-Umno or pro-BN.
Lets help them to ‘dissect’ the whole rationale on why we support the true multiracial ideology. We are actually comment in favour of should be in placed and not blind loyalty to so and so.

I have read and understand the dilemma Gerakan has if this party is to pull out from BN and join Gerakan as described by romerz. I understand that Gerakan is highly probable to have not getting the ideal distribution of seats in Penang (especially) in order to make up a state government that is controlled by Gerakan while DAP shall have picked their seats in priority. I know that eventually Gerakan may lost its influences in the country if they join PKR.
However, I am asking myself, what lead the party to move forward? Wouldn’t it be their fundamental ideology that steer their direction? If that’s the case, can the present party’s ideology change the present political environment within BN? If yes, by all means, Gerakan should stay at BN and continue to prove that this party is the conscience of BN!
But if not, would the stay in BN merely to hope for the chances to wipe out DAP in Penang on the next general election and to secure the control of the state government but totally sacrifying the party ideology is justifiable? I find this is rather absurd.
Eventually, perhaps we, as the voters of the nation, should ask ourselves, what sort of party will you vote for? If you will vote for those party that do not serious to their ideology but only to how much power they will obtained, then Gerakan should consider to stay in BN. Otherwise, if you will vote for those party that do serious to their ideology and fight for it no matter what may comes, then Gerakan should leave BN. No matter where you go, the people will vote and support you!
And only if you have the full support of the people will you have the negotiation power. I am sure by then, every single alliance in the country will try very hard to invite this party to join their alliance in order to strengthen their political power.
So, every one of you as the voter of the nation shall have your answer as to what decision Gerakan shall take now! Right?

I see your point on distribution of seats in Penang. But to me, the important thing Gerakan should do is to win back Penangites’ loyalty, which they totally lost in 12th GE. Only then, Gerakan can demand for more ideal distribution of seats to them when they join Pakatan Rakyat.
Sometime, reality can be very cruel and yet, in this case, Gerakan cannot run away from this cruel facts. They have no other choice but to build up Penangites’ trust on them, only then, they can talk about the rest of Malaysia.
To me, Gerakan has a better chance to win back its reputation out of BN. It is no point they hinge hope on Umno as Umno, as we can see, has no hope to change its racial ideology.
Another option, which I think is workable is that Gerakan can be another multiracial force in shaping up a 2 party system in Malaysia, ie out of BN and not joining Pakatan Rakyat, but as a party on its own on multiracial ideology.
This option will result in Umno and BN to rot in time to come if they still continue with its racial divide ideology, which is ‘superficial’ and not ‘true’ multiracial.
This option, in fact, is good for us Malaysians in the long run and then we can see a ‘matured’ political system like what we see in USA of Republican and Democrat.

Irrespective of what other people say, I always regard DAP as a multiracial party and most importantly, a party that doesn’t mix religions with politics.
I believe many Malays, who are also Muslims by definition, are of the same view that Islam should not be mixed up with politics, and that is the reason why we see Tunku Abdul Aziz decided to join DAP, though he does not expressly said so for obvious reason.
I wish to see more Malays, especially the technocrats and professionals, join DAP.
Bravo and congratulations to you, DAP and of course, Tunku Abdul Aziz.

For Gerakan to leave BN and be an independent party will result in 3 corner fights for seats in Penang and we all know that it is BN which usually wins 3 corner fights.
(Note: Permatang pauh doesn’t qualify as a 3 corner fight as the 3rd contestant is almost unknown).
So Gerakan cannot strengthen a 2 party system by becoming a third force. It will only serve to weaken a 2 party system.
For Gerakan to join PR and compete with DAP for seats in Penang does not make sense.
A better option for Gerakan is to merge with DAP. Both parties share many common ideology and the 2 parties will strengthen each other.
However, Gerakan cannot make a move out of BN with self-serving leaders who are still chasing the BN gravy train.

I see your point here.
My arguement about was just wish to see 2 party system that practise ‘true multiracial’ ideology. My point here is that Gerakan, being a multiracial ideology base, can play a much better role than BN, which will not garner enough supports from Malaysians over time.
Of course, all Malaysians (except those in Umno and BN) must adopt multiracial mentality first for our dream of real 2 party system become a reality.

Please help me appeal to voters of P44 – Permatang Pauh not to let their ballot go to waste.
Even if they do not wish to choose any candidate, they must go and register and spoil their ballot paper if necessary.
By not going to vote will only give the opportunity to BN to rig the results by using their unused ballots since we have already seen how partial the EC is.
Furthermore there is no reason not to go since Tuesday is a public holiday in Penang.

Arrived at 7pm…went to dinner with my rowdy delightful NGO friends…felt tired …slept awhile and now…hungry and fresh..only one at hotel lobby…using internet facility.
There is no good or bad news to report by my NGO friends…10 of them……except having 6000 police force here actually will scare people………more than anything else.
Personally…I have not expereince anything yet..until to-morrow.

Hopefully his joining DAP would make it more multiracial and appeal to more of the Malays to join.
No party should advocate race politics anymore. I hope more and more Malaysians will realise the folly of race based politics , which not only divide the country but also retard the growth and achievements of the country.

aren’t most politicians like that? During Mahathir’s time, everyone was praising him, but now everyone is saying bad things about him, not that they did not see the bad things before but since TDM was the boss then, everyone was singing like a sycophant.
This is just one example.
Many of us do not like Anwar, but you have to give it to him that at the present moment , he is the only one capable of bringing a change. So this is not about him as a person, but more about what he represents.
Many people believe things cannot be any more worse than now; corruptions are so rampant; abuses and manipulations of government institution like police and judiciary are so common; so many unexplained things happening. But who else can force BN to change? Not DAP alone, not PAS alone.
It is like choosing between devil and the deep blue sea. Since the devil has been doing all the wrong things and all the bad things and there is no chance of the devil becoming better, people have no choice but to turn to the deep blue sea.
He represents a hope . Whether he would be better then the present BN government , no one can guaranttee. But at least the policy he publicly advocates, represents hope that at last, someone is able to break the racial coccoon that BN has weaved all these years. Those in the Bn government, aren’t they all gulity of supporting this raical cocoon not for ten, twenty or thirty years, but a long long 51 years and still counting.
At least, the Ketuanan rakyat principle is bettter and more accpetbale than the Ketuanan melayu agenda.. At least, the Malaysian Economic Agenda would be fairer than the present NEP.
And people desire a 2 party system so that if one is not good, they can be thrown out and let the other try for 4 years. If the other is no good, then people could always choose the first one again, after one term. So it is this hope that Anwar is giving people. Before MArch 8, who dares to think that Malaysia would come close to a 2 party system?
Frankly, ask yourself, do you really believe that the Mongolian case is as simple as what is been portrayed? Do you think that judiciary and police are independent? Even people like Tunku Abdul Aziz has beginning to see the point and at age 73, he is joining oppostion.
Do you believe that UMNO will reform, now that 6 months have past and nothing has happened?
Do you think that if the succession plan succeed in UMNO, the next head would not manupulate institution like before? Anwar may do the same thing, no one knows , but at least he represents a hope for change! So it is not about this person anymore… It is about the hope for change… Change can only be better since the country is now at the lowest ebbs.
(just by the way, I have not been in touch with Tan for quite some time, but this is not about the person but about a cause).

But, I wish to add here, I agree with you that both sides are not ‘angel’ or as you said both are ‘evil’. But again, we humans are not perfect either, right?
So, I rather we go for the ‘lesser’ evil and by doing that, we will not back to square one, I assure you.
Just look at Pakatan Rakyat, 3 parties with rather different ideologies and yet they put aside their differences and emphasise on common values which are totally missing from the governance of umno and BN.
