    Dear Dr Hsu,

You are right in your comments.

I was a product of the 70’s education system where I completed my secondary education in a missionary school.During that time, upon completing secondary education, to pursue tertiary education seems to be an uphill task provided you have the financial means to do it overseas. Most of my generation had to slot it out during the day working and taking part-time studies at night. For those of my friends who can afford to study overseas, they never seems to want to come back upon completion of their studies – a sad case indeed. Just imagine what they can do to the country.Worst, our next door neighbour seems to be way ahead not so much fully from their own home-grown human resources but rather some are actually our own bright people studying there and eventually becoming citizens there.

If only things can be done differently 30 – 40 years ago. Now to reverse it would take at least another generation – Can we afford to wait that long?

    Sad indeed.

At the suggestion of a friend, I am posting the Malaysian Insider version of MM Lee’s interview under the comment coloumn:

SINGAPORE, June 13 — It makes no sense for bilateral ties to be sunny one day, stormy the next, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said at an interview with Singapore journalists in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. This is an edited transcript of his remarks.

LEE: This is my fourth day, we’re off to Ipoh tonight. I leave Kuala Lumpur with some optimism, guarded optimism, because we have to see the words translated into action.

Prime Minister Datuk Serie Najib Razak said in Singapore that he wants cooperation with Singapore. He told the prime minister, let’s work together. He repeated the same to me.

I had to emphasise that it cannot be cooperation today, non-cooperation next year and then back again, backwards and forwards, because these are very big investments both in the Iskandar region and the third bridge to Desaru and the east coast, from Desaru up to Mersing, up to Kuantan and Pekan, massive projects requiring huge investments, the returns can only be calculated in decades, not in terms of years.

So it must be a long-term commitment and it must mean cooperation across the board, not just selective cooperation where it’s win for one side, less win for the other.

We either cooperate across the board and stay that way for decades or we revert to the old position where from time to time, we might work together, from time to time, we will not be working together. But no private investor will go into huge projects, which require decades to recoup, unless there’s long-term stability in the policy.

The third bridge from Changi, it’s for technical discussions. It does not make sense to us if at the same time, they punish us by making us barge sand from Vietnam. It’s no benefit to them; it’s just to cause us extra losses. So if it is cooperation, it must be across the board and the final balance must be fair on both sides and not just in specific, selective areas.

I was encouraged because I met the Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and he repeated the same things, so obviously, the matter has been discussed in Cabinet and this was confirmed when I met the three vice-presidents (of Umno), Minister for Defence, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Regional Development and they told me exactly the same.

In other words, Najib had not only said this in Singapore, but had come back and briefed his Cabinet on his new policy. So as far as the Cabinet is concerned, they are solidly behind this policy, but as I said, if there are discordant voices, either from the states who may voice some reservations or from whatever high sources in Umno, then doubts will be cast in the minds of private investors.

The government will continue because we have promised an iconic project, we will carry on with that. But private investors do their long-term calculations; when they put these massive investments in, they need to be certain the policy will last decades.

Then we don’t have to send our economic plants to Vietnam, to China, to India or to Batam, which we thought it wise to do because there were times when, whether it’s rhetoric or otherwise, our investors felt they were not welcome.

Q: When hiccups do occur, how should both sides react?

Lee: My suggestion, which they have welcomed, is that there should be a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between the ministers and even the top officials, so even before hiccups reach the stage of third party notes, ministers can just pick up the phone, speak to each other and sort them out, which was the way it was done in the early years. But that generation, we went to the same schools, same colleges…so there was an easy relationship. Now we are separately educated.

Before, we used to have Malaya-Singapore Cambridge University Association or Oxford University, now we have two associations. So I suggest that both have joint celebrations, their national day, our national day, Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali. In other words, let there be some bonding which will make the relationship easier.

Malaysia is our closest neighbour. Many Malay men have married Malay women from Singapore. Many Chinese have married men and women from Malaysia and they visit each other, so it does not make good sense to have this ambivalent relationship where one day, the weather is sunny, and the next day it’s wet and flooding.

Q: You spoke about guarded optimism. Is that how you feel also about the resolution of long-term bilateral issues?

Lee: There are no longstanding bilateral issues which cannot be resolved. There were agreements and if there’s any doubt over any agreement, it can go for third party adjudication, whether our interpretation of what has been agreed is right or their interpretation of what is agreed is right. There’s no need to quarrel. As with the case of Pedra Branca, both went to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), resolved.

There are no legacy issues. These are firm agreements made between two parties, seriously intended, signed by both parties, knowing what its content meant. There’s now a difference in when is the operational date etc, we can send it to third party adjudication, either the international arbitration court or the ICJ or even any of the renowned arbitration centres. The thing can be resolved. But if we start arguing and say that this is a legacy issue, forget about it, it is not resolved.

Q: Given the results of last year’s general election in Malaysia, would you say there is uncertainty on the political front? What’s your reading, having met some of the opposition leaders?

Lee: Everybody knows there’s been a tectonic shift and the analysis has been that the urban Malays, especially the educated young Malays, voted this time for the opposition, together with the Chinese and Indians.

I met Hadi Awang (president of Parti Islam SeMalaysia or PAS). He told me, in Kelantan we are very fair to all races, the Chinese temples, Indian temples, Chinese are given ownership of land, so there’s no discrimination. He believes that same policy can spread across Malaysia, not just in Kelantan.

That’s left to be seen, what Umno does to win back Malay, Chinese and Indian support, which this time went to the other side.

Hadi Awang said in the countryside, rural Malays are not educated, therefore they still depend on the patronage of Umno, so they still stay loyal.

In the towns, they are now well educated, many engineers and professionals have joined and become members of PAS or Parti Keadilan Rakyat and he’s said we’re patient people, year by year, there’ll be more and more people moving from countryside to towns. Therefore, more and more people will be educated and be sceptical and critical, so they are quite sure that time is on their side.

It really depends on how Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) react. I do not believe they are going to stay put, because then as Najib has said, they’re in for problems.

Q: The opposition has made great inroads. Are you concerned about that and what are the implications for Singapore?

Lee: If I’m not concerned, why should I be here? As I told you, it’s a tectonic shift which (opposition coalition) Pakatan Rakyat did not expect, neither did BN, and both sides have done their analysis and come to the same conclusions.

The town Malays and town Chinese and Indians want more transparency, no double language and a more inclusive society. So Najib has said, ‘1 Malaysia’.

The Chinese press, whom I met separately, said they first reported it as one multi-racial Malaysia and then they were corrected to say 1 Malaysia, that is to say we share one Malaysia but the communities remain distinct, as Malays, Chinese, Indians. It’s a different set-up.

Q: Is this a trip down memory lane for you?

Lee: In part, because I haven’t been to Seremban for 40 years. I used to go there and practise in Seremban in the courts, so I had some nostalgia to see some of the places.

The mentri besar was happy to see me, arranged for a coach, personally escorted me. He’d also like us to carry our investments up from Malacca to Seremban. – The Straits Times

LKY has been watching over the causeway for sometime since the 308 tsunami. It has come to a point when his officers feedback prompted him to make the visit for a first-hand fact-finding mission.

His worries had been always a fear that the BolehLand be taken over Islamic governance and it needs a whole new ball-game to tackle the future.

So, with the worsening scenario of the mess here, it would be a good time to walk the ground.

I am simply speechless of the way he tackle feedbacks from Harry Lee, it was under Koh Tsu Khoon’s administration in the last 18 years that Penang lost all that it has when Lim Chong Eu was in power.

Shame Shame on Party Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia for having a president like such.

What clarence commented is indeed very true. Singapore is an envy to many of us, especially its efficiency in managing its economy and no nonsense attitude in many of its institutions. For a country without natural resources, such efficiency, which is crucial for its survival is understandable. Another examples are Japan, Israel, Switzerland and Hong Kong.

Malaysia, a country blessed with natural resources and enterprising people, by right, should be on par, if not better than Singapore, if our system in on right footing as what we see in Singapore. Many people told me, what is the use of they contributing their hard earned money as taxes to the government, and let these unscrupulous people to carry on with their way of managing the country, and at end of the days, not accountable to their evil deeds. Perhaps, these people are right in this, especially in a situation of high inflation and declining in money value. We are in fact have no extra money paying taxes to the government.

Should we tell them, enough is enough? I leave it to you to decide. In fact, we have told them this, just that …..sigh.

It is time they realised their mistake and not being jealous we praise a foreign statesman. We are no apple polishers.

    ==============================

Gerakan vice president Huan Cheng Guan has decided to stick it out with the party despite his recent rift with other party leaders.

After weeks of speculation that ignited due to controversial appointments of branch coordinators particularly in the Machang Bubok divison, the Penang-based member of 18 years announced at a press conference that he remains a loyal party man.

“I have received over 1,000 SMS messages asking me to stay,” he told reporters at a press conference here today. 🙂

Putting together the venerable LKY with KTK and his ‘entourage’ in the picture, we can see a grandfather is talking to the grandsons and literally the grandsons were finding baseless alibis to explain why they had botched up their duties and how they failed to perform above marks.

Not only Seremban, once a dead town, has been leading in terms of infra structures, but also Melaka, one will see how great different has been the China Town become much more a tourist attraction when even the many Taiwanese or Hongkies during the short transit, will only visit Melaka and skip Penang from their itinerary! This has been the hard fact not since yesterday but decades ago! What had KTK done to rectify the situation except blind! Yet he was high hailing about Penang being the most advance State and the least indebted to the Fed Government, a good boy who seldom asked for money and a good paymaster which contributed to the National coffer which almost became private Bank of the famous and corrupted BN big guns!

If Tun Lim could ask for the World’s 3rd longest bridge and KOMTAR developments from the Fed. funds, why couldn’t the shilly shally Umno stooge also learned how to negotiate the best deals for Penangites from his next door mentor?!

Who is KTK? Now only he behaves as if he’s the Penang taiko who had been stripped off his pants to tell Lim Guan Eng how to refer to the Fed filthy den for future developments for Penang when he KTK supposedly to have been done so decades ago?! He better goes and fly kites!

He’s finally confessed, he’s the betrayer of the State and we Penangites acknowledge and will know do our part in the next next GE, just to make sure that since he only befits to be a backdoor dog, he will stay that way in the same position and be a forever crouching dog in the dog house of BN!

I think the blame should be also on Lim Keng Yaik. He was the president of gerakan for so long. He had not assisted to develop gerakan. Koh Tsu Koon was actually just Lim Keng Yaik’s puppet.
How come everyone only blame KTK? LKY just hide behind ……..he is actually the puppet master.
Now, LKY is sending his son lim si pin out and he be the puppet master. I believe next thing will happen is LKY will find someone like Huan Cheng Guan, Mah Siew Keong, Chia Kwang Chye and Chang Ko Youn to finish off Koh Tsu Koon and gang. And the ultimate plan is to put his son, Lim Si Pin on the throne after all the fight!
Hope that all gerakan member can really see the true picture behind gerakan puppet & master battle and don’t fall trap into Huan Cheng Guan’s recent drama. It was just a beginning!

penangites. you do have a point. But then Lim Si Pin is an insipid and uninspiring middle aged man. I guess, without his father, he is no where in Gerakan. I have several observations

    1. LKY cannot be the puppet master unless he is controlling the purse string. One way of doing this is to have Gerakan “assets” in his name. Just like Samy Vellu. I wonder if there are people out there who can determine this. I was told many millions changed hands in licenses deal from the ministry where LKY was the minister. Did any of these money enter into Gerakan’s book.

    2. Huan, particulaly him, is very ambitious politically. Will he put himself in danger to push Lim Si Pin up. Personally, I dont think so. I may be wrong, but most of the 2nd tier leaders inclduing THN want to have position but are not capable of fighting dirty. So they ride on KTK’s coattail – not that there is really one.

Huan has no real grassroots. He scraped through the VP contest and almost lost to an unknown Malay candidate, coming third after Mah Siew Keong and Dr VJ. Those who subscribed to Gerakan ideology would not support him.

LKY’s brother is in control of the party assets and purse strings even to this day.

Who is the real power behind? The first person appointed to CC is LKG who is LKY’s brother and manages all the party finances and money.

Just check the annual returns of Gerakan to ROS, in the accounting sheet, who are the ‘Trusties’ of the Party assets will be clear evidence of who are behind holding the purse string.

Why is LKY still holding tight to the position of being the adviser, is he more concerned about the Party development or the perks which derive from the multi-millions worth of assets?

Would it be one day, the Party assets become a private asset and the many goofy heads are still holding sway to the so-called ideology which had proven to be redundant in reality due to the subservient leaderships which instead of the lingo -change BN from inside, they had been changed totally inside out to become the credenza of BN?!

Ah! Gerakan has fuzzy fudgy accounts that very few people know. At least the CC members have the right to know the accounts. I am surprised.

What are the govt “allocations” to Gerakan and how much go into individual pockets? How are these accounted. Dont it sound like MIC and Samy Vellu.

LKG – former director of Telekom. That meant he must have got some pretty large projects. How much for him and how much for Gerakan?

If the members of Gerakan have no clue as to how the party gets it money and how it is spend, then they are nothing but pawns. The people who control the money play the pawns in anyway they want.

Why would people want to be Gerakan members and just be pawns for the puppet masters.

    Very enlightening!

    klm,
although I am not privy to any financial discussion, and financial aspect has never been discussed in the many meetings that I have attended to, I do not think Gerakan has received any allocation from Government.

Developemnt allocation from government to the individual MPs and ADUNs , yes, as with all other MPs and ADuns..and that is for the MPs and Aduns to service their own kawasan, and that is between the government and the MPs .

I have in fact advocated that to be fair to all, as a true democracy., even the opposition MPs should be given the same development allowances, and my former state chairman who is now PKR CC member Dr Tan just laughed at me and said that I am political naive and politics is not about helping your opposition. ( I replied to him that I am not naive but just being idealistic and above partisan politics).

As grassroots members, we have to foot all our own actitivites from our own pockets. For example, if certain branches in KL needs to carry out certain activities using one of the auditorium of PGRM towers, we pay the same rate as the public.. to the company Cempaka.

Gerakan is quite unique in that it is independent financially, since the incomes from the twin PGRM towers and other assets are more than sufficient to cover the party’s needs.

The twin towers and other assets were free from mortgage and loans,(unlike MCA whose building loans almost brought the party to bankrupcy) and whatever rental accrued is money for the party.

Similarly, in KL, our state building was free from debt, and the buildings (2 adjoining 4-storey buildings) was donated by Alex Lee to the party in the 80s..

This is just to clarify that we are not like MIC or MCA.

That is why I have always of the opinion that we can survive on our own without BN, politically as well as financially. We should be truthful to our selves and fight as an independent force to achieve out aim of a fair and equal society.

Dr. Hsu. These were trade offs, concessions for political compromises – that is why i use “allocation”.
These concession were meant for the various communities. It does not mean real allocation of govt funds. MCA had it, MIC had it. I am quite sure Gerakan had it. From what I heard, these were mostly makan by the party leaders. These stories were around for a long time.

    “免四角戰分裂民政”‧范青淵不爭檳主席

    * 要聞
    * 北馬
    * 地方

    2008-09-18 19:13

    (檳城)一再盛傳將在最後一分鐘退出競選民政黨檳州主席的范清淵,今日(週四,18日)從海外返檳後證實將退選。他說,為避免檳州民政黨的分裂及照顧黨的整體利益,他決定退出競選,這使到原本出現的四角戰,最後形成謝寬泰,丁福南及章志偉的3人之爭。

    民政黨檳州母體改選及投票日落在本週日(21日)。

    剛從香港回國的范清淵週四接受《光明日報》專訪時指出,黨的凝聚力及團結已經不堪一擊,為了黨的團結,他決定退出州主席之爭。

    “我在台灣與香港這段期間,對州主席之爭,以及自已是否還要繼續競選,已經做了深思熟慮及全方位決定。所以我一回國後,就當機立斷向支持者公佈決定。”

    退選非倉促決定

    他補充,退選決定是經過一番很長時間思考,並不是一個倉促的決定。

    他說,他已經向部分支持者匯報,支持者表示尊重及諒解他的決定。

    他說,退出競選主席的決定,也是顧及整個黨的團結,他不希望四角戰的局面,導致整個檳州民政黨鬧分裂。

    他指出,週四晚他還會與其他支持者見面,告訴支持者他退選的真實情況。

    “雖然4人競選主席的選票已經印製好,但是我會逐一向支持者們表明,在投票當天勿把票投給我。”

    子根說挺誰我就挺誰

    范清淵強調,他手中掌握80票張鐵票,如果原任州主席丹斯里許子根博士要他支持誰,他就會把自己手中掌握的鐵票投給誰。

    他說,許子根是他的老板,他只聽許子根一人說的話,只要許子根指示他怎麼做,他就會怎麼做。

    “許子根所作出的決定才算數,其他人說的話都不算。”

    他指出,如果許子根要他支持丁福南,他同樣會支持。同樣的若要他支持謝寬泰或章志偉,他同樣也會支持,一切以許子根馬首是瞻。

    他表示,現在球已經踢向許子根的腳下,他要等待許子根的最後決定。

    范清淵:我非任何人的棋子

    范清淵也澄清,他不屬於任何派系。“我是我,他們是他們,我出來競選是個人的決定,不受任何人牽制,也不是任何人的棋子。”

    他說,其實他自己對州主席之爭,一直以來都抱著認真的態度,絕對不存在任何玩票性質,或是其他人的棋子。

    本來他還以為州主席是一對一直接對壘的戰役,卻沒有想到會是一場四角戰。

    他說,如果是一場四角戰,對黨的團結就不是一個有利的發展,畢竟惡鬥將會使到檳州民政黨留下難以磨滅的“痕跡”。

I think Huan will get away scott free by the CWC because he got strong backing from UMNO, particularly Johari Baharom and the rest of Gerakan will have to kow tow to him …

as for THN, you just as good as KTK, instead of get mud thrown on your face by UMNO goons, you got your own ppl in the state to splash you with human feces

Dr. Hsu. You sound a bit pissed with me. 😦

You have your point of view as a Gerakan loyalist. I have another point of view as a skeptical citizen.

    (1) What happened to the allocation of the Telekom shares, TNB shares etc. Did it went to certain individuals or Gerakan? How did the proceeds went back to the communities.

There were no questions asked in the chinese communities. But this was big problem in MIC and Maika. They were blatant and greedy.

    (2) Lim Kheng Guan was a director for a long time in Telekom. He looks qualified. But qualification would not keep him there for so long. What takes?

    (3) did any one asked where the funds to put up Gerekan twin towers come from? If it was bank loan, wont Gerakan have the same problem as MCA. MCA had bigger ambition and took more loan than Gerakan.

    (4) As for Alex Lee’s donation. I dont think it was all charity. His banking license was the Chinese allocation. I am not so charitable about his donation.

Pardon my skepticism. I just see evil spirits everywhere these days.

    klm,
I am just giving a clarification. I am not a wee bit pissed off, 🙂

I was told that the money from twin towers came from donations from well wishes and members and sales of certain units (not all since some were kept for rental purposes) , just like the wawasan university, which was also funded by donations.

SOme of the new towers’ units were for sale, and many members as well as public bought the units and these units are now part of the Seri Cempaka hotel, which will give rentals to these buyers who let out their units to Seri Cempaka to manage . (I think many bought for investment because it guarannteed ? 8% return on investment, I am not sure how many since i did not buy any unit)).

    Bank loans were not involved.

SOme of the old tower were sold too before the building process , eg the Overseas Restaurant bought their premise., the former citreon also bought their units and had resold to other . These are just examples.

The buildings, sale and management were all done through cempaka, and LKG did a better job than MCA for Gerakan did not have to take any bank loan for these buildings.

As for ALex Lee, he was the VP of the party and deputy minister when he donated the building to the party. He was also very rich then, his family controlled D&C bank, Roxy and so on… at the time he made the donation.. I did not know whether there was any trade off for his donation..

please propose a resolution at this year NDC to ask the party to disclose its financial accounts.
It is also important to see who is holding the party’s asset.

If only Gerakan to have many more of these kind of so-called leaders, whom they are good in performing charades, uncouthly pose themselves in front of the journalists’ cameras like they are clowns, mockery yet cheekily unabashed, there will be no tomorrow for this kind of Party for peoples to have trust on them! Only their master, UMNO will be greatly amused!………

The relics of Tun Lim’s ideology had been far bygone. There’s not an iota of principle nowadays prevail in this eunuch Party still called themselves ‘Gelakan’, sounds alike to Gerakan!

I don’t know how would Dr Hsu look at this disgusting picture of – a lackey kissing the poodle’s hand in a sassy and sardonic way, so disgusting and puke inviting like a lowly rated Punch and Judy show!

If only others may enjoy it as the opening clownish show of a circus, I am not a bit entertained except can feel all my goose pimples stand, stretching to the back, and expanding to the bottom part, my goolie bag!

Is this what the bozos of Gerakan claimed to be the ‘ideology’ or rather it’s ‘Eunucheology’ in actual fact, only those castrated eunuchs will treat it as a tradition for in house observance and obeisance! It’s utterly an insult to the founding fathers’ noble ideology indeed!

Should those members with sound minds pledge loyalty to these kinds of principle less eunuchs only good for licking the boots, and the goolie bags of their masters?!……..Sigh!

Whatever happening in Gerakan do not bother me a bit. You guys are just washing dirty linens in blogosphere and at the end of the day, nothing concrete will emerge ultimately. The only thing is going to change is who is who chairs in CWC and CC, who will become President of the party, bla, bla, bla. To your taiko Umno, you guys are just clowns because, to them, everything is ‘quota-ed’ and up to you guys to fight for these crumbs.

Will it be more beneficial to consider pulling out of BN, back to your ideology and offer yourselves as an alternative to the people at large? At least Ong Tee Keat has the gut to put up a poll to survey whether MCA should be out of BN.

MM Lee must be laughing at you guys. No wonder Penang has not developed much for the last 20 years under KTK of Gerakan. You guys are more interested in “who gets what”.

Sigh! 😦 , none of my business, anyway. Keep washing dirty linens, good luck.

MCA is financially quite lucrative now with party assets worth some RM1.6 billion, including Jalan Ampang headquarters, share ownership of Star Publications group, a university, radio station etc.

So it is understandable anyone would want the throne to rule the mosquito empire (compare to UMNO big brother).

    1. I was told Lee San Choon is one of China’s biggest fresh flower exporter. Where did his capital came from.

I am intrigued by the comment that HCG kissed KTK’s hand.

It is normal in Malay culture to kiss the hands of the elders and higher ranks as a mark of respect and obedience.

I am wondering why HCG would use the Malay practice rather than chines culture. Is it to signal to his supporters elsewhere that he still respect his party president. I am quite sure this is not done casually.
