Dr M’s record

I would like to post a letter to the NST which was published in the NST online today. It is about Dr M’s record over the 22 years of his rule. The writer has written what many of us feel.

Mahathir’s record: More negatives than positives

By : NORAMTAZ ABDULLAH, Petaling Jaya

I REFER to P.C.A. Lee’s letter on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s record (“Good, bad or plain ugly?– NST, June 18).

To me, the Petronas Twin Towers, the Sepang F1 Circuit, Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the tolled highways are not projects coming out of brilliant ideas or initiatives. These can only come from those who think and behave as if the country’s resources are unlimited and that “money is no problem”.

It was during his administration that another “brilliant” idea was mooted which thankfully did not materialise: to build a bridge linking Malaysia and Sumatra. Just imagine the consequence to the country’s financial resources and the ballooning budget deficits had the project proceeded.

His yearning for mega projects was indeed insatiable, especially when these become synonymous with his name. He wanted to create his own history, especially for the young generation. After all, those who were born at the time Dr Mahathir became prime minister were adults when he retired.

This generation knows only him as prime minister and this is the memory he wants to perpetuate, even to the extent of dismantling parts of the historical past.
Remember Merdeka Stadium, which was on the verge of being demolished to make way for a commercial project? Had it not been for the public outcry, we would have lost this historical place where our first prime minister read the proclamation of our independence.

The availability of oil money and Petronas under his control had no doubt become the driving force behind his thirst for mega projects, including the heavy industry, as well as for bailing out public and private companies from the fallout of the 1997/1998 Asian financial crisis.

The national car project was developed at high social cost to the country and people, when it could have been done differently and at a lower cost and yet still meet our national objectives and aspirations.

Just look at what Thailand did to its automotive industry, which is robust and competitive compared with ours. And we were ahead of Thailand at one time. Perwaja is another disaster that has to be salvaged.

Is the Formula One circuit financially viable and self-financing or still dependent upon the continuing injection of public money or Petronas money?

What did the country get substantively out of the Twin Towers apart from having the tallest building in the world, though not any more now? Was the Twin Towers fully occupied upon completion?

Did our construction industry or contractors gain any technological mileage in terms of expertise and skills when we engaged foreign labour for its construction?

I tried to list down his positive contributions to the country, especially to the ordinary citizens who may remember him in their hearts for a long time. We are not talking of the few hundred families or individuals who were direct beneficiaries of his 23-year administration through negotiated contracts, privatisation deals, business monopolies, exclusive supplies and services, but the millions of ordinary low-income and poor people in the rural and urban areas throughout the country.

Frankly, not much can be documented for their direct well-being and welfare, except the widening disparity of incomes among the major races and within a race and between urban and rural areas during his administration. The gap between the rich and poor is widening.

I only see more and more negatives than positives, as enumerated by P.C.A. Lee, like the thriving corruption, the erosion of public confidence in the judiciary, racial polarisation, wastage of public funds, substandard buildings, schools, roads implemented through direct negotiations and consequently abandoned, but later salvaged by the new administration at tremendous cost to the nation.

To add to the list of negatives is the declining respect for our laws because “you can do wrong things for the right reason”. Or you can be spared of your wrongdoings before the law if you can tell the judges what to do. Anything is possible at the right price.

The explosion in the number of awards for honorific titles among Malaysians happened during his premiership, so much so that cynical remarks were made by everyone that if someone throws a stone on the street or at any public function, the chances are that you would hit a Datuk, Datuk Seri or Tan Sri.

The scramble for such titles became paramount, as they provide tremendous mileage in terms of securing preferential treatment of sorts and access to the corridors of power, all which adds a new dimension to Malaysian culture and way of life.

However, we must be fair to Dr Mahathir. Let us hope as time goes on, more and more of his good deeds and not his misdeeds will be revealed. As the saying goes, elephants leave behind their tusks and the tigers their stripes when they die. Human beings leave behind their names.

“The writer has written what many of us feel.” — glad to know that I’m not alone in finding the so-called support for what Dr M is doing is growing increasingly ridiculous. I found another worthy read here : http://stephendoss.blogspot.com/2008/06/good-doctor.html#links

I can see that many poors in Malaysia become poorer and more desperate during his 22 years reign, let alone all other sorts of social problems infecting the country, with the exception of him n his family members manage to elevate into billionairs status, it is quite a job “well done” by all the standard of a third world n “corrupt” country.

His good deeds are there……but some are done also with personal selfish ulterior motives.
Thus his good deeds are an extention to what Normataz has said…about Mahathir..to create his own history.
He wants to be the Sadam Hussien of Malaysia.
This man is pure evil and selfish….totally not behaving like a humble government servant …elected by the people..to serve the country..but like …as if…the country belongs to him…..once elected. He showed his true self….ONLY…after being elected.
One forgot…he sacked 4 Deputies…speaks so much of his dictatorial character.
And right now…never change one bit…and have been showing his true self…feeling so proud of it…can lie…can forget…can remember like an elephant…can twist facts to fictions…and vice versa….accusing others….before being accused.
The dirtiest politics he played was dividing the Malays…playing his sinful race and religion dirty politics….mostly to show off… to UMNO politicians…..how to handle PAS…….with total disregards to lives…being poisoned by such evil and selfish politics..to his own people….making them half pass sixes…..now accusing Malays are so….out of their own characteristic….and not out of his own performances for 22 years.
What baffles me…is ..right now…still… so many Malays …hero worship him……with no feeling to our Bapak Malaysia.. Tunku Abdul Rahman….whom Mahathir destroyed the UMNO and started his UMNO BARU.
He destroyed the Police and Judicial Depts….and under his 22 years….almost everyone is free to steal…cheat or rob….and be like a smart crook as he is. It i simply…who you know..and not what you know…to be successful and rich..in businesses.
He is miles ahead….compared to all crooks.
He is truly… Malaysia most gifted crook of all times.
    Yes..take away all..these from such a bullier…what is Mahathir?….Nothing!!
Again….why so many are still pro Mahathir? I guess..those are the ones…he did enrich and they have some gratitudes… towards him…and perhaps some are still paid by him..to be pro-Mahathir.
Finally…as he brags…that..as a doctor…he is an expert to cure things.
Just look at the country……and Mahathir killed more than curing….in his 22 years…as PM.
But then…….most of those he killed are Chinese and Indian small business owners. What does he care. After all…he did say.. ..his love is for his race….his religion and his party…which infact…is the biggest bullshit statement by him too.
He loves no one..but himself..his family and chosen friend.
Only after retiring…you can see the real Mahathir.
How smart can one be….like him? If you hold all the powers and do things as you like….holding all the four aces…
….even biggest idiot can produce results.
So don’t think Mahathir is that smart. He is not.
But he sure is ..the biggest bad example…of a gentleman….any Muslim may want to copy.

And he is at his best to fool Malaysians…over and over again.
Right now..at his blog…he said ..as an Adviser to Petronas….he is just a messenger boy…and no advises given to Petronas. What a jerk…he is!!
Sure..everyone knows…once he is no more the PM….the power to advise is a PM..is totally lost!
Lets hear him say….that for 22 years as PM….he did not advise Petronas at all. I dare say….with his character…he did not advise…as PM. He simply hint and anyone cannot take the hint……better watch out!! That’s the way…a dictator rules.
So you see…Mahathir is very good to tell half truths..to confuse Malaysians and always….to his favour.
Fortunately……majority Malaysians are not half pass sixes…created by him.
They can think for themselves….and can judge characters very well.
The only problem is..UMNO dare not agree with the majority…..as by doing so..is infect .admitting UMNO is a corrupted..sick party.
The election results showed voters are not easily fooled..like before.
They can keep on controlling the TV…newspapers…and put out one sided stories…favoring UMNO….but the internet is the blessed tool….that will expose UMNO lies and cover ups upon cover ups.
Now…few….including Mahathir is using blogging to do their selfish work. Others…keep telling how good government and UMNO are..and Mahathir sole purpose…is to be a nuisance…to get arrested ….to protect his family…knowing UMNO will never arrested. By doing so…will give him the weapon to expose everyone…following him to jail. That’s why…he is so confident….and that’s why UMNO twist the issue….to insult him back..but never dare to arrest him. Be it another person…that person…will be in jail without trial…till the day he dies.
This shows….clearly UMNO is a racialist party….priority to protect their own members…..to save themselves…….and here …..so many Malaysians are still blind.

    From Malaysiakini.

Judge hits back at ‘devil incarnate’ Mahathir
    Jun 24, 08 8:55pm

High Court judge Ian Chin, who two weeks ago make stunning allegations that he was threatened by Dr Mahathir Mohamad for a number of high-profile cases, today fired another stinging salvo at the former prime minister.

“…Dr Mahathir for what he had done and for what he is trying to do is a devil incarnate but to those who had suffered under his hands, even that description my be rather complimentary,” said Chin in open court during a hearing of an election petition in Sibu, Sarawak, this afternoon.

He told lawyers from both parties of the election petition to decide whether he should continue hearing the case in light of the attacks on his integrity

Mahathir had denied issuing a ‘thinly-veiled threat’ at a 1997 judges conference that they would be sacked if they decided unfavourably against his government.

Chin, a High Court judge for Sabah and Sarawak, said he had also been sent to an indoctrination ‘boot camp’ where participants were pressured into making pro-government decisions.

While Mahathir conceded the existence of such ‘work camps’, he said these were held for participants to learn about Malaysia’s political system, the Barisan Nasional concept, ethics and moral values and democracy.

Chin also took offence with Mahathir in stating that there was a police report made against the judge for hiding his past when hearing a certain case.

“Dr Mahathir, by waving the supposed police report the way he did, lent support to the general held view that this prime minister kept a docket on everyone useful but with a skeleton in their cupboard so that he can manipulate then on pain of disclosing the skeleton,” he said in a lengthy defence against the ex-PM’s remarks.

“I thought only the Stasi of the then communist East Germany do such a thing but then it was done for the benefit of the state not for an individual.

“In my view, he is trying to exploit this general belief to wave that supposed police report to get the public to believe that I have committed something unlawful which he is privy to and which the public is not unaware so that my integrity could be put under suspicion to make what I have revealed unbelievable.

“Let me declare to the public that I am as clean as a whistle and my life is an open book.”

Chin also argued that his shocking revelations on the state of judiciary during Mahathir’s times was not because he was passed over for promotion.

He tendered a number of letters he wrote to two different chief justices in which he told them that his wife wanted to return to Kota Kinabalu.

“Since I do not want promotion before, now or in the future nor any appointment after my retirement, what do I get out of all this knowing very well that I will be the target for vilification?

“It is this. I must be able to sleep well after I retired knowing that I have done all I can, like all the crucified judges before me, to tell Malaysians the danger they are in regarding the state of the judiciary.”

Chin revealed more about the boot camp he attended as a judge and the humiliation which participants were forced into.

“…You surrendered your wallet, your air ticket and handphone when you checked into the camp and you cannot go anywhere as it is in an isolated place and you cannot leave for anywhere as there is no transport.

“You are totally cut off from the outside world, with no newspapers or television and with selected news conveyed to you at the assembly for the purpose of sampling reaction such as the news that a certain party had won a by-election which elicited some applause from some young officers but they earned the rebuke of a High Court judge as that was an improper display of partisanship.

He said the objective of the boot camp was to “make us take orders” and a “junior officer was made our leader from whom we have to take orders from and one Sessions Court judge who disagreed with that was made to publicly apologise on a podium to his junior officer leader”.

“Another method employed was to chisel away the view we held of how independent we should be in our job as High Court judges and this they did by punishing or humiliating a High Court judge by making him carry a brick all the time after he broke the egg which each of us must carry wherever we went, including marching.

“All these were, in my view, for the purpose of softening us to take order for the benefit of the government, meaning Dr Mahathir.”

    Mahathir ‘lied about me absconding’

Chin also accused Mahathir of lying when the former premier alluded to the fact he “absconded” from the camp.

“But two did leave, one because of illness and the other the wife’s illness. Everyone who was not otherwise sick had to remain and we all did save for the duo; with each given a certificate after the end of stay.

“That Dr Mahathir should even resort to lying about me absconding from the camp speaks volume for the character of such person; he is lying by resorting to repeating it as if it is the truth.

“This is the same prime minister who lied to the world that (former deputy premier) Anwar Ibrahim could have deliberately hurt himself when the latter appeared with the black eye. He is also waving a police report perhaps for the purpose of intimidating me or to blacken me in the eyes of the public.”

Chin made the comment today during his hearing of the election petition filed by DAP candidate Wong Hua She, who wanted the court to declare the result of the Sarikei parliamentary contest on March 8 ‘null and void’.

BN candidate Ding Kuong Hing had won the seat with a slim majority of 51 votes in the election three months ago.

The hearing is to resume on July 7 where lawyers from both parties of the election petition will have to inform Chin on whether they would want him to continue hearing the case.

    People ALWAYS have a choice!!
Anything..except UMNO and BN and there were DAP ..PAS….and few small parties to vote in…even Independent candidates.
The point is…in Malaysia…everyone is comparing UMNO and BN with others….yet never give others ….the chance to do the job.
50 years under one party for a so call developed country mentalities?
I say 50 years of no guts to try others by majority is the real reasons. Most are programmed how good UMNO and BN are….and most are from one race…the Malays.
12th election….just more than 100 days under oppositions for few and here…few dogs and cats are throwing judgements of dis-satisfactions on People’s Party management already.
I want to say right here….loud and clear…if you are so damn smart….you should have a track record of a very rosy and successful career or business..right now….since judging others…is actually saying ..you are a very successful person…yourself. Not only that….sparkling clean devoted Malaysian….talking for the people and the country….and not talking….with selfish motives…nor is a die hard..supporter for any political party.
Then ..you need to have real good knowledge of the political..economical and social situations….we are now in…good or bad and why.
So if you don’t have these qualities…sure…put out your opinions…don’t be afraid…practice your democratic rights….BUT…do ask for second opinions. Be humble and learn.

the oppo only grew stronger since a year ago . Though there were individual oppo parties but they were not united (due to ideology) and faced lots of internal issues .
One man brought them together under one umbrella . Only now the lay concerned people see some light on the oppo side . I’m refering DSIA .
Without his effort i doubt the growth of oppo could have been comparable as we see now . The ppl had no choice in the sense of ‘strong’ oppo party.

As for Indians , the political awaikening only happened after Hindraf emerged (not really by DSAI) .

    I repeat…..Mal;aysians always have choice.
Strong or not strong ….how doe one know?
Have you ever try it yet?
Anwar came in with his supporters and strength the oppositions.
But…it was always race and religion dirty politics…that majority Malaysians are afraid to change…fearing race risings…period!
    It’s UMNO’s propaganda work…and people’s fear…..and Chinese selfishness.
The wake up call…was the BERSIH and Hindraf walks……not because of Anwar.
DAP could have done a very good job in managing the country….but Malays simply will not support DAP…even tough DAP have shown it i non racialist party.
    For that….Anwar did his part.
To say…all depended on Anwar alone is wrong.
    It’ the right condition…..right situation.
And lets not forget.it is voters that makes Malaysia….what is today.
    So…who did you vote?
Did you walk the talk too?

DAP has a “lion’ as chairman, he is not even close to “chineseness”, why should Malay think it is a chinese party? probably due to umno propaganda influence. The “FEAR” factor is working so well for Malaysia racist parties especially umno as many voters are so afraid the disregard of race n religion consideration while voting will deprive them of all the privileges and special treatment in Malaysia when umno is not in power.

1.if any party is not strong ppl wont have the ‘daring’ to vote . Psychological effect.
2.when the 3 oppo parties were blended together by DSAI ppl could not see it as racial party anymore. In other words it’s like another shadow BN which voted by anyone regarless of his race/religious .
    3. Hindraf was independant. Bersih had political backing from pakatan.
    4. Mass ppl gathering at PG during pakatan ceramah prior March8 which i witnessed is the clear evidance that ppl want change at federal level . DAP/PAS/PK cant do this individually cos they are not strong enough . We need an ultraman to fight the monster not a ‘cili padi’ . Ppl wanted new oppo PM , as i witnessed , rather than new CM/MP for PG/Kedah/Perak .
5.i do not know if the ppl’s expectation was different in southern peninsular .
    6. I agree change in Chinese selfishness . That’s why the Gerakan’s stronghold fell into DAP’s hand.
I admit Indians’ ‘dun bother’ attitude changed after Hindraf rally.
I’m sure Malays ‘traditional’ mindset slowly changing after the return of DSAI .

Yes….reading that list and much more….not written out…I am still confuse..why is he able to talk bad about Dollah and UMNO ..and the government dare not take legal actions.
We can conclude…he did make UMNO BARU rich…his friends rich and his family too.
So this man is a Tun….because he is the biggest crook?
Now that all Malaysians are suffering…it will be…the rich getting richer…,poor getting poorer…..and can be so..because…voters.. keep on supporting ….a corrupt government….out of fear and selfishness.
In the end…every Malaysians that are middle class and poor….will suffer…..and these makes 95% of the voters.
So the 5% filthy rich UMNO Malays are enjoying..flying here and there…first class..buying properties ..overseas…so many Malays are still blind with idiotic loyalty to UMNO.
