The Dr M legacy and myth

2 days ago, I asked “what will happened”?   after Dr M’s latest move. I also mentioned that his son Mukhriz would not leave and that there would not be any MPs leaving UMNO. Some grassroots may leave but most will stay behind.

The events of the past 2 days proved that there was no mass exodus , no MPs leaving the party. Theresa Kok, the MP from DAP,  was quoted to say in NST today that if he cannot persuade his own son to quit, how is he going to persuade other MPs to quit?

Dr M should take a leave from Dr Lim CHong Eu, one of the Gerakan founders and former chief minister of Penang, who did much to improve the economy of Penang , turning it from a resourceless entreport (which lost its free port status) to an industrial hub, a silicon valley of sort… Dr Lim, after his loss in 1990 General Election, had never meddled in the internal politics of Gerakan. In fact, any retired politician should behave like Dr Lim, not just Dr M.

Let us recap what Dr M had done in his 22 years as PM.

Malaysia’s economy was 3 times that of South Korea in the mid sixites, ahead of Taiwan and on par with Singapore.

In the seventies, at one time, our currency was slightly stronger than the Sing Dollar. I was at that time studying in Singapore University, and I remember that every holiday I would buy fruits and other titbits back to Penang, beacause those things were much cheaper than in Malaysia,  thanks to our strong currency then.

In the early eighties, when Dr M took over the premiership, South Korea and Taiwan was about the same level as us. Singapore was already way ahead, and their currency had appreciated 50% against ours.

By 2003, when Dr M stepped down, S Korea’s and Taiwan’s economy was many times of us. Singapore currency was more than 2 times ours.

From 1980 to around 2000, the whole Asia Pacific area was booming due to the influx of investments and technology. Any country with an open economy would have boomed under the circumstances. So Malaysia, as well as Indonesia, Thaland all boomed. Only those countries that practice semi open or closed economy did worse than us, like Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar. Even Vietnam is playing catching up. So, during that time, even if Dr Mahathir did not become the PM of Malaysia, Malaysia would have progressed similarly, or maybe even better.

That is to say, even if we have an average PM, we would have done OK economically and not worse than Dr M.

During that period . SOuth Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and SIngapore all did many times better than us.  Singapore with a population of 4 millions, has about the same GDP as ours now, and is poised to overtake us anytime.

So in fact, Malaysia lagged behind other countries economically as compared to South Korea, Singapore, taiwan and Hong Kong. We would soon lag behind Thailand, Vietnam if the same Mahathirism is at play.

So it is a myth that Dr M had been the architect of modern Malaysia.

His leagcy? The twin towers, Putrajaya, the palatial residence of the present PM and a compromised judiciary, increasing racial polarisation, deteriorating standard of governance…….the list goes on.

Dr M’s mathematics?  Snow is black and charcoal is white….

Just stand aside and watch the show unfolding. See the endless shadow play of the directionless characters.

mahathir is laughing at the gutless AAB. When they meet in Japan he will be wearing the despicable smile. After the meeting he will be poring scorn at malleable AAB.

Chandra is not the only despicable person in the present political scenario. Today with have 2 new persons to add to the list and also 2 organisations.

PAS and PKR are the organisations and Nik Aziz and Azizah are the new individuals!

The people who voted PRakyat have been sold out by PAS, Nik Aziz and also by PKR and Azizah. Now PAS is talking about “malay interest’ and Nik Aziz and Azizah are offering mahathir to join them. ‘The door is wide open to him’ …..ha!

I want to be fair to TDM. Malaysia is a fractious country. We aren’t going to be the same with any of these more homogeneous countries like Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, etc. When the NS highway was proposed, if I remembered correctly, the DAP did themselves a big disfavor by going against the project. TDM never stood up to their nonsence. I am glad he did not. Because of his vision and daring, he pushed the Nation to paths that we never experienced. I dare say NS-highway, KLIA, F1-Sepang, KLCC & Twin Towers, KL-Sentral project were all his credits, okay his debits too were a lot. When Jeff Ooi was asked who was his hero, he replied that it was 70% TDM. I hasten to agree. Yes, TDM has his fair share of debits, the worst must be the judiciary failings, the croynism and corruption, ISA, OSA, PPPA and other dragonian Acts. But you know, there is no point blaming him. The sleepy AAB failed to undo what TDM did. Hence, our weaknesses is due to AAB-led leadership. I think I can still give lots of respect to TDM and would prefer to leave him alone. After all, there is no one as fiesty as this man! Malaysia is still a lucky country. We have a youngish population, our resources are better than most and it is up to all of us now to turn up the engines and realized our potentials. I would prefer to be forward looking than harping on our failings.

it seems to be a desperate move by TDM to quit to put max pressure on AAB . Besides , it also appears that the former diverting attention as the cabinet wants him to be investigated for Lingam’s tape case .

In deed TDM won in material factor (highways,KLCC….many more) but he lost in human factor (equality , judiciary , corruption…etc) .

    Nick,

Physical developments like NS-highway, KLIA, F1-Sepang, KLCC & Twin Towers, KL-Sentral project, as you said, is Mahathir’s credits. But, you miss out the ‘debits’ caused by all these projects as these projects were built on ‘loans’ and not from ‘reserves’. Furthermore, how about the maintenance cost of all these projects?

Also, you miss out projects like Putrajaya, Dayabumi, KLIA, Perwaja, Cyberjaya….and the list goes on. These projects certainly look nice from outside, but how about inside? Equally nice?

I always tell my friends, if you see someone drives Mercedez, has big bungalow and so on, don’t envy as these physical ‘wealths’ may not be financed by strong reserves. Every Balance Sheet has its ‘debits’ and ‘credits’.

Mahathir should just retires and let history judge him.

    Dr Hsu,

U forgot to mention the huge external debt incurred during Mahathir’s rule. Compare this to HK, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore’s external debt. U should know infrastucture developments can be bought too, the way we finance our car loan.

Other issues are the attempt to corner the tin market, perwaja steel, proton, British pound fight with Soros.

Greetings Saudarah AADYA ! You are right I deserve to be chastised for my racial remark. I suppose I just could not help myself, because at the time of May 13th, “69 I was living at Kamunting Street, KL where the riots started and houses around mine were burned together with their occupants in them.

All the same I had no right to say things like I did. I apologise to you and all Malays who have read my remark. We need to be more forgiving and tolerant. I deserve whatever your criticism that you throw at me.

    yapchongyee,

Good on you. It takes a gentleman to apologise for the mistake one makes. You are right, we should all try to be more forgiving and tolerant. Save for the politicians, most Malaysians have moved away from racial hatred and are trying to respect one another. Let us do our part.

The end of Mahathir and Umno not equal to the end of Malays. It is a beginning for Malaysian Malaysia.

Below article taken from Haris Ibrahim’s site.
To me TDM don’t deserve any respect . Shame on him !

    ————————————————–
Mahathir s/o Mohamed, today you have reached an all time low.
Malaysiakini reports today that in Tokyo, you warned of possible unrest in our country, and said that “extremists” among different communities had begun to voice their opposition and make unfair demands on the government, trying to “divide rather than unite.”
    Malaysiakini quotes you :
“Now we are seeing the different races making demands on the government, which they perceive as a weak government”
The Malaysian Insider reports that on 17th May, in Johor, whilst speaking at a gathering, you referred to the Hindraf memo, and then said :
“What does it say? Malaysia for Malaysians! This is the reality of the present situation. If we do not speak up, if we choose to keep quiet, we will lose our rights and the other races will take over. When that happens, it will be like Singapore. Do you think we will still have control?”
What, Malaysia is not for Malaysians? For who, then?
    Racists like you only?
Who is the extremist now, intent on dividing our people, if not yourself?
I checked your blog to see if perhaps you might have posted something there that would suggest you have been misquoted.
This is what I found you had written on 16th May, 2008, under the heading ‘Ketuanan Melayu’ :
Sebaliknya mereka meminta-minta orang tertentu mempertahankan kedudukan orang Melayu.
Was it not you, in mooting your Vision 2020 in 1991, who advocated a Bangsa Malaysia? See what you said then :
By the year 2020, Malaysia can be a united nation, with a confident Malaysian society, infused by strong moral and ethical values, living in a society that is democratic, liberal and tolerant, caring, economically just and equitable, progressive and prosperous, and in full possession of an economy that is competitive, dynamic, robust and resilient. There can be no fully developed Malaysia until we have finally overcome the nine central strategic challenges that have confronted us from the moment of our birth as an independent nation.
See your first and eighth strategies to achieve this vision.
The first of these is the challenges of establishing a united Malaysian nation with a sense of common and shared destiny. This must be a nation at peace with itself, territorially and ethnically integrated, living in harmony and full and fair partnership, made up of one ‘Bangsa Malaysia’ with political loyalty and dedication to the nation.
The eighth is the challenge of ensuring an economically just society. This is a society in which there is a fair and equitable distribution of the wealth of the nation, in which there is full partnership in economic progress. Such a society cannot be in place so long as there is the identification of race with economic function, and the identification of economic backwardness with race.
Now as you traverse the country spewing your racist rhetoric of ketuanan Melayu just to save your own sorry butt, why don’t you also apologise to your audience for sowing this idea of Bangsa Malaysia, for advocating an end to identification of race with economic function?
Why don’t you also tell them about the friends that you’ve enriched at their expense?
Why don’t you tell them that in the name of ‘membasmikan kemiskinan’ you have entrenched them in abject poverty?
    Understand this, Mahathir s/o Mohamed.
We survived, notwithstanding your 22 years.
Notwithstanding your plunder of this nation’s wealth and resources.
And whilst you talked then of Bangsa Malaysia but did little, we will walk that talk.
We will begin to build our Bangsa Malaysia.
Understand that if many feared you before, now you are viewed with scorn.

This old man is truly….the curse for Malaysia.
He is fanning racial tension too.
What have we all done…to deserve such an evil man as PM ….for 22 years?
So nice to hear all ministers did not resign..including his son!
    And with 1000 UMNO members resigned…out of 3 million members…shows clearly….the whole country….is treating him ….like a lunatic.
How thick can his skin become?
He has to play his last card…as the Royal Commissioners report on Lingam case…will keep him very busy in court…plus Anwar’s case against him….is 100% gone case for him. He knows that…..so shout as much as he can…to divert attentions away from investigating his family’s wealth.
