Do not cut the nose to spite the face

                                        NOT EQUAL  TO

There are some suggestions going around blogs that we hang our flags upset down this year for the Merdeka celebration.

I do not agree.

We, as Malaysians, must differentiate between the government and the sovereignty of the country. Just like in a party, we must differentiate between the ideology and the leadership. The government can be worng, corrupt but that does not mean that the country is at fault… The country is bigger and higher than the government which is but just one of the numerous institution of the country. The country is the rakyat, the people; but the government is just merely a representation of the people chosen for the sole purpose of ruling on behalf of the people.

A party ideology can be hijacked by its leadership for its own interest, and it is up to its members to right the wrong and take the party back to its original path..

Similarly, a country can be hijacked by its ruling elites to cater for the self interest of the leadership. But a country’s sovereignty goes higher than just the government and government leaders. The flag, a symbol of this sovereignty, represents not just the government, but the people themselves.

If the government and govenrment policy are not good, it is up to us, the  rakyat, to change them through democratic means.. But to blame it on the flag is like cutting your nose to spite your own face…

I love my country. I love The Flag. I don’t love the government.  I would not celebrate the Merdeka occasion, since there is nothing to celebrte, but I will continue to love this country and the flag.

Think of the horrible mess Merdeka will leave!

last year, EVEN DURING rehearsals, there was RUBBISH everywhere! I thought I was living in a third-world country or something.

the rubbish will come when Merdeka celebrations come and go.

And the only one to blame is our primitive brethren and our abysmal morals.

    This sucks.

    Dr. Hsu,

Many people do not think of sovereignty issue when decided to hang Jalur Gemilang ‘upside-down’, I inclusive. What a shame, right?

I think a lot of us are very fed-up on what is going on in our country, even Regent of Perak commented that Sultans and Rajas are not blind of what is happening in the country.

Just hope that our leaders will not be so engrossed with fighting for political power until sovereignty of our beloved country is at stake.

Doc…So glad you agree ..our flag should stay as it is..not upside down.
Those few pro UMNO bloggers said..it is a sign of distress from Malaysians..and hanging it… upside down…. is not disrespectful.
What sickos think they are so smart.
First..fear ..then provocations..not trying to say…. all Malaysians are in distress moods.
Let me tell them this…it is UMNO ..in distress moods….not Malaysians.
So if everyone take their advises…it means we are supporting UMNO.
    Why can’t we just don’t celebrate 31st August..Merdeka parade…to show UMNO….we are united….against them.

Hanging the national flag upside down would be degrading our motherland. Surely Malaysians have the good sense to see this would be viewed by people from other nations as an unpatriotic act. The politicians are the ones creating all the mess, if one wants to show dissatisfaction with the state of affairs, then maybe some retailers may want to sell t-shirts with these politicians printed upside down on them.

    Dear Dr.Hsu ,

I’m just wondering why should the Jalur Gemilang be given a shabby and distasteful treatment just because certain national leaders have been making a lot of questionable things and ridiculous judgements and decisions . It’s like humiliating the holy books of Quran , Bible , etc whenever certain muslims , christians , buddhists etc make a fool of themselves .

All of us love this great country of ours and the Malaysian flag that represents Malaysia should not forgot people like Tunku Abd Rahman , Tan Siew Sin , V.Sambanthan etc who braved themselves to seek independence from the British .

Don’t let a small group of people who lost the direction to make Malaysia into a great nation as what was intended by our great leaders of the yesteryears , ruined our soul and lives as well .

I’m proud of my Jalur Gemilang and still have fond memories waving it with my friends i.e. Kok Kiong , Wai Foh , Sarjeet Singh , Suresh , Khairy ( not KJ ) , Fernandez , in school during sports meets , merdeka celebrations , Hari Belia etc. And I will still waved it high even if most of the rakyat deem it as a waste of time .

You see , in the Jalur Gemilang , I found what is meant to be a PROUD MALAYSIAN !

In the Jalur Gemilang , I’m a Malaysian first and muslim malay second !

Taikoh, tai, yes doctors should be allowed to state their opinion without any encumbrance regarding medical matters, including the opinion whether a rape has occured… This right must be respected because as a registered doctor, a doctor’s opinion carries weight… And no doctors should be forced to reveal what is going on between a patient and the doctor, unless permission isgiven by the patient. This confidentiality clause is similar to the lawyers and the doctors’ right to keep secret for their patients must be respected.

And no doctor should be forced or coerced to change his expert opinion, even if another doctor may display a different opinion.

I will never desecrate my national flag by hanging it up side down, what umno did in Malaysia is because majority of people choose to have a corrupt political party to govern the country, it has nothing to do with our national symbol, i prefer to leave the symbol alone instead of blame it on the flag for all these evil deed from BN, as i do not consider they represent our country’ stand rather just a governance body make up by representatives. But those who hate Malaysia can do that if they want.

    Dear Dr Hsu,

I do not agree either. I first saw this suggestion at rocky bru’s yesterday but I also read the comments (mostly all) that don’t agree.

Despite all the differences that the rakyat is faced with, the national flag and anthem are 2 things which we will all stand to attention for. About the only thing left to unify us.

I didn’t make this comment on something that we all already know but rather on this suggestion which will only provide the narrow minded authorities reason to jump on bloggers for the ‘disloyalty’.

I may not have this 100% right but my understanding of flying an upside flag is a call of distress, much like an SOS.

Where you are no longer able to ensure your own survival and require external help. In the old days, before telephone and emails, the only means of communication is by visual means.

Hence when a town or fort is under siege and on the verge of collapse, the flag is raised upside down for help. Much like the a black flag is raised for plague.

Malaysia may be in crisis but it is not in distress which requires outside saving.

We have not even reached the point where all hope is lost where even whatever the rakyat does makes no difference.

It is poignant to remember only half of the voting rakyat voted for change. And the other half (me included) have not yet had another chance to recant and do the right thing, next time round.

No, Malaysia is not in distress, it is only in crisis.

Let us not use a hammer to swat a fly much like what the BN has been doing in the past.

Too much of an overkill only brings negative responses!

    Dear All,

Our loyalty and our priority should be on the NATION first! The interest of the nation is much more important than anything else.

That’s why, we shouldn’t hang our flag upside down during the MERDEKA celebration. The flag symbolized the nation. We need to have a clear conscience on this.

The flag symbolized all of us as Malaysians. It symbolized the many struggles, sufferings and sacrifices that have been made by our forefathers. For a FREE nation. For the FREEDOM of forever being slaves to a colonial masters. The flags symbolize the birth of the nation for a better tomorrow.

The same can be said about the Government. It as an institution that also symbolized Malaysia as a democratic country. It is the “government of the people, by the people and for the people” who are NOT above the LAW and the Nation.

However, the same cannot be said about THOSE ARROGANT, ABUSIVE, BIGOTS, RACISTS, LIARS, CHEATERS, CORRUPTORS, OPPRESSIVE, GREED, PLUNDERERS people inside the government.

These are the people who have been putting their own distorted SELF-INTEREST first above the interest of the nation.

These are the people who have treated the responsibility (amanah) that have been put on their shoulders as an OPPORTUNITY to enrich themselves through many DUBIOUS means, all at expenses of other people and the nation.

These are the people who keep SODOMIZING the nation in almost everyway. They practice DOUBLE STANDARDS. They create Laws to OPPRESS people from PEACEFULLY voicing their views or from organizing peacefull rallies as have been guaranteed under the constitution. They have been RAPING the POLICE and JUDICIARIES by planting PROXIES in them. They spread LIES and PROPAGANDA everyday through their firmed grip on the media.

These are the REAL people where WE as the rakyat, who symbolized the NATION should have been angry with. FIGHT them, RESIST them, DEFY them through PEACEFULL means until they have been brought down from the power that be, that’s the Government. These are the rights that have been accorded to us by the Institition.

We’re PROUD of the Nation. We’re PROUD as Malaysians. And for this PRIDE, VOTE them OUT from the Government. Without FEAR, without HESITATION and without PREJUDICE.

Then only, JUCTICE can be done…

Today is an auspicious day, ie 080808, once in a century. Romerz is right, lets enjoy Beijing Olympic opening ceremony at 8 O’clock 8 second tonight.

Lets looking forward to a successful Beijing Olympic. It is disgusting that sodomy news play dominance in our main stream media, instead of Beijing Olympic.

My auspicious day is any day…I am not provoked.
My birthday is everyday..I feel happy and well.
My lucky day….is when I get pennies from heaven….to buy more cigars to smoke.
My heavenly and hell life…is right here…experiencing both.
Some people have cats nine lives. I do.
Some have one live…gone case…when once striked by bad luck.
If you have the ‘sixth’ sense…you are a moon child.
If you have no commonsense…you are not smart.
If you not smart and think you are smart..you are an idiot.
If you are an idiot and think God talks to you….you are a lunatic.
    8-8-88….auspicious day..it is!!
Nine months time..more babies are born…than any other months.
Full houses to all restaurants…..marriages are the norm of the day.
You think those couples have time to watch live opening ceremony of Olympic Games..after a hard day’s night? Both will be dead tired! Few will be having new experiences of their lives. But many..same thing…nothing new.
I will watch the opening ceremony…like all do..provide the Astro man come and change my faulty decorder..as promised.
    Luckily….local channels have live telecast.
Disco girls…massage girls…prostitutes…sure loose alot of business….bad luck for them.

The problem is, those in power equates the Jalur Gemilang to themselves as a person whenever they have a chance. What better way than to turn the tables on ‘them’. Its not a desecration of flag (as national symbol). Its not the same as flag burning or leaving it on the floor. I just want to get my forn of protest across.

    Monsterball,

I have no intention of instigating you or incurring your wrath. And you are right – your altercation with Ms Loone is none of my business. Having been a visitor to her blog (and as rightly pointed out by you – no comments), I just thought that your remark in this thread on sending her a “few messages” (instead of what I would term as a boatload) was off the mark.

Are you a pest on this blog? I shall have to leave that to the blog owner, lest I be called “judgemental”. As I said earlier, I thank you for maintaining a credible presence on this blog.

I am merely a blog visitor who just happened to come across your duelling in another blog some time back. You definitely left an impression.

Anyway, let’s move on with other matters.

    chauncey gardener…Who are you..keep judging me….even now?
You talk like a braggart…with no substances .
    Go…….leave me alone.
I have seen enough of your kind..like so cultured….but is infact..full of shit….no balls to stand by your country or defend it with your live. Talk talk talk…is all you know….like Susan Loone….and his buddy….”WitsO”
Leave me alone…….if you dare not reveal yourself…..when you want to judge others.!!
Yes .you move on….and talk to others….not to me.
I don’t like to be judged by a faceless..nameless person. So is “WitsO”….faceless and nameless….full of shit man/woman….who knows!!
If you got the guts..reveal yourself.
    Otherwise….you are shit man/woman too!!

    Dear chauncey gardener,

Ok I’m back from a day of Olympic truce.

What I meant between ‘crisis’ and ‘distress’ is my definition of crisis means that the country has severe problems with its civil institutions like the judiciary, police, A-G’s chambers, etc.

Institutions which are supposed to protect the ordinary Malaysian but unfortunately has been subverted by the executive branch of the government.

But despite these problems and despite the gloomy outlook at the moment, these problems are not beyond repair. It only needs those with the authority to revamp and repair these institutions if they have the desire and the will to do so.

So I interpret crisis to mean a bad situation but can be made better by ourselves by changing the government to one whom we believe will carry out these repairs we wish.

With ‘despair’, I was using it in the context of flying an upside flag in the medieval days which denoted a castle under siege and on the verge of collapsing and being conquered by an external enemy.

A situation which had reached the point of ‘despair’ where survival is now dependent on external help.

So what I meant in my above comment is that whilst Malaysia is in ‘crisis’, it is not in ‘despair’ which requires outside (non-Malaysian) intervention as a last option for survival.

We are far from that though we are in a pretty bad shape at the moment. But nothing which we the rakyat can’t change since the ballot box is still available to us.

Hope this explanation makes sense to you.

I see where your context of despair is coming from and totally agree with you that external help is not needed. I was understanding it from the common usage of distress – “a state of danger or desperate need”.

I think that Malaysia is in despareate need of some real changes to some of the policy changes that were ingrained in the previous administration – education comes to mind but that is requires a long term fix. The crisis is that the ship has seemingly lost its rudder.

We need everyone to pull together (unite) and move the ship in the same direction. Our current Captain does not seem to have the map in hand.

I am happy to hear that you are also against the upside down jalr gemilang act. I dont see the hole point of playing around with the flag! If they are realy so angry, put lah the leadres pictures upside down or somwthing! The flag reprsents US all of us regardless of party or race or religion. If they can easily fool around with that, what else do we have? Bloggers too, as i always say, have a social responsibilty to uphold.

All commentators need to take heed of Doc. advice of not name calling in spreading “truth”, remember your IP address can be traced by umno’s police SB n hire thugs, i am sure everyone know how they employed heavy handed tactics in jail especially the “back door trick” so often used by umnoputra.
