Time for Gerakan to regain credibility

This is what I wrote in my column in Malaysian Insider today.

Time for Gerakan to regain  credibility

SEPT 9 — Immediately after the March 8 general election, I wrote in my blog that three options are available for Parti Gerakan which suffered a near total defeat, losing 10 of its 12 parliamentary seats and 27 of its 31 State seats, including all its seats in Penang which had been its traditional stronghold and base.

Out of the two parliamentary seats won, one is in Gerik, which is a seat “borrowed” from Umno when the PPP refused to return the Taiping seat to Gerakan.  In hindsight, it was a minor blessing because if Taiping been returned to Gerakan then, it would have lost that seat too and become a one-MP party.

The three options which I proposed then were:

1. Remain in the Barisan Nasional, where its fate will be decided by whether Umno reforms or not. Gerakan’s fate will be in the hands of Umno. If Umno does not reform radically, and Gerakan is seen to be not able to push for any changes within the BN, Gerakan will probably be wiped out the next round.

2. Opt out of the BN and join Pakatan Rakyat. The caveat here is that Gerakan is too weak now and it will be in no position to bargain for better terms to join Pakatan Rakyat. In the reality of politics, do not expect PKR or DAP to give up seats for Gerakan to contest the next round.

3. It can opt out of the BN and remain independent and be a vigilant watchdog over both the BN and Pakatan Rakyat. It can act as a conscience for the people and give constructive criticism to both sides. It could play the role of the Liberals in the UK, which has thrived between two giants, the Conservatives and Labour. Come the next election, it could probably opt to join forces with either the BN or Pakatan, depending on which is defending the rights of the people. It could then bargain from a position of strength, and not from a position of weakness, during any seat negotiation.

There is, of course, a fourth option for Gerakan: which is to disband.

At that time, out of the three options that I mentioned, the third option was more acceptable since Gerakan then, despite its near complete annihilation, still had a good brand name and the goodwill of the people, especially in their base — Penang.

Subsequently, many members have raised the same points to the leadership.

In reply, the leadership argued that being out of the BN, Gerakan would never gain back its past strength and the best option was to remain in the BN and push for Umno to change.

Now, six months have passed. Let us re-examine the options.

The Permatang Pauh by-election was an eye opener. In spite of the big loss in the last general election and the acceptance of multiracial politics across ethnic lines by the people of Peninsular Malaysia, Umno politicians still used the race card in the campaign.

This has, of course, put Gerakan in a most uncomfortable position. On the one hand, it wants to go back to its non-racial ideology but on the other it has to campaign side by side with Umno and its racial rhetorics, against a party that is campaigning on non-racialism, good governance and people-orientated policies — issues which Gerakan has hoped to bring about since its inception 40 years ago in 1968.

By actively campaigning together with Umno in the by-election, it has shot itself in its foot and further alienated its traditional support base, the older generation of Penangites who had in the past voted for Gerakan. The by-election with its racial rhetorics probably did more harm to Gerakan’s credibility as a non-racial party than anything else since the present leadership took over.

The subsequent drama that has unfolded put the party in an even worse position. The hard stand taken by an Umno division leader over his speech during the by-election campaign, and the subsequent support of all other Umno state leaders for this particular division chief, has once again showed the impotence of the party in trying to influence Umno.

It has once again showed up the arrogance of members of this BN senior partner, which many commentators believe is one of the reasons for the BN losing big in the last general election.

The perception now is that even a third-tier leader of Umno carries more weight and more importance than a component party chief. If Gerakan cannot even push Umno to ask this member to apologise, how is it going to influence Umno’s policies and direction?

Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, the acting president of Gerakan, mentioned that Gerakan should not quit just because of the antics of an Umno division chairman. However, in my view, this is no longer about this man and what he said. The implication has gone beyond this person.

What is blatantly exposed by this episode is the powerlessness and helplessness of Parti Gerakan to influence the leadership of Umno. With this helplessness and powerlessness, can the party seriously think it can push for reform within the BN and play a significant role? Yes, the deputy PM has apologised on behalf of Umno. But would he have apologised if not for the fear that any loss of a component party would result in a stampede out of the BN and realise the Sept 16 crossover of MPs?

The leadership of Gerakan may want to wait and see if any change within Umno will come about. But looking at this episode and the subsequent softening stand of Umno’s top leadership towards this combative division chairman, any change in Umno would at best be cosmetic, as the perception is that the present leadership is neither strong enough nor possesses the necessary willpower to change an entrenched culture of politics of patronage and arrogance.

If Umno does not reform and Gerakan is seen as an accomplice in Umno’s brand of race politics, and with corruption and abuse of power getting from bad to worse, it would lose whatever little goodwill is remaining of its traditional support base as time goes on. By then, even if Gerakan opts out, it would be too late as it would have lost all its support base and its credibility as a non-racial party fighting for a fair and equal society.

So, the question is can the first option still be the best now? Personally, and many Gerakan members agree with me, the time has run out for the first option. If Gerakan has not been able to reform the BN with its 34 years of membership inside the BN, can it hope to achieve it within these few months or even in the next year or so?

Gerakan’s hope is to go back to its ideology and its roots. That can only mean one thing. It has to come out of this race-based coalition. The third option is the most attractive.

Looking back at its history, Gerakan was formed as a people’s movement to do away with raced-based politics and to bring about a democratic socialist way of lifting the economic standard of the people irrespective of race and religion. Most of its members joined because of this idealism. If this idealism can be achieved by another party championing the same cause, would it really matter that Gerakan would not win any more seats the next round? Should it, instead of helping to achieve this idealism, become a hindrance to other parties fighting for the same ideals?

Furthermore, on the issues of seats — even though it really does not matter whether Gerakan can get any more seats the next round, as long as it achieved its aims — if Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu could win Penang with just 300 hardcore party members and minimal resources at his disposal in 1969, then Gerakan should be able to survive at least as a party outside both coalitions, now that the party has thousands of loyal members and with much more resources at its disposal.

The question, therefore, is no longer about whether Gerakan should come out or not. Rather, it is about whether the leadership has the political will or guts to make such a move.

Thank you for a good article. As for the option of remaining in BN and try to change UMNO … I doubt it will ever happen. More like wishful thinking….. unless a leader like the late Tun Dr Ismail comes along..

What options are u talking about? There is no option left. Just leave gracefully(??) now. I will surely do not wish to be associated with a party that was slapped left and right by junior politician without recourse. I rather commit hara kiri. What say u Koh Tsu Koon, Chia Kwang Chye, and ultimately Lim Keng Yaik ?? All those liars with “intellectual” coats.

You must understand that many of the leaders have big business interest which depends on the Government handout. That is why it is so obvious that in spite of the humilation by the unmo’s members, they are still reluctant to pull out. This is the same for the MCA for not wanting to pull out of BN. It is personal interest versus the interest of the people. Get it….

    Dr Hsu,
In my opinion that’s what UMNO PG have in their mind, that is for your party to get out of BN.
    WHY?
They r after Gerakan’s allocated seats to contest in the next GE. Gerakan’s seats will be shared among UMNO /MCA if it’s out of BN.
Assuming UMNO held on to their 11 state seats winnings’ in next GE, MCA winning a few seats back from their previously lost contested areas and both UMNO/MCA winning a few seats from
seats previously allocated for Gerakan thus wrestling back the state government and ultimately securing their man as the next CM of PG. It’s their ploy and motive.
As they saying goes : Less man more share and chances to b d next CM is brighter for them.

Ahmad said that DrKho wont get malay support after this…. but he didnt realize that he wont get non-malay support in PG .
If GR joins PR , i foresee some seat allocation argument to incur with DAP . Well , as for ppl’s support definately will increase compared to GE12.

Doc, I’m really exasperated by your statement above.
Gerakan has been in the BN, I believe, for a few decades and I also believe, it has been watching UMNO getting from bad to worse.
Now BN started telling some of its component parties to get lost.
    So, what hope is there?
As I have posted in one of your previous blogs, it’s way, way past time for Gerakan to uproot and leave the BN! It doesn’t matter where you want to go, just leave!
The BN is an organisation without any hope and it is people who still depend on UMNO for the crumbs who want to stay.
Remember, some component parties were saying that they were treated like beggars or servants!
Only people without any self respect would stay.

There is no other party that has more intellectuals as Gerakan.

In the BN there are 3 kinds of Political identities.

    1) The donkeys in human suit group : MCA, MIC + UMNO.
    2) The Borneo clique.
    3) The Nationalistic division.

Pull a leg out + the tripod will fall like a stack of cards.

Pull Gerakan out of BN and people will flock to you, as you are proven, one of the few parties that ever ran a state.

Hahahaaa…. after seeing all the dilemma faced by GERAKAN and it’s member, I’m a little bit perplexed… is it really so hard to leave?

Enough of this bullshits laaa! Just tell that to the face of KTK and LKY! Any man with a principles in life will leave. Those who choose to stay, usually have vested interest in it. To be in BN, that’s always be the case…

Talk is useless, only action counts! If GERAKAN never learned on the wishes and aspirations of the people during the last GE or the last PP by-election, they will forever be in their self denial mode!

GERAKAN is a NON-SECTARIAN party, but instead choose to be inside BN! Hahahaa… you say something, you end up doing something else!

GERAKAN is the party with most intellectual, but instead ends up with the dilemma when faced with a simple question that any young children could have easily answered! To leave or NOT to leave… Intellectual? That’s a good one! Hahahaaa….

In the end, it seems that ringgit and cents are more important than anything else! even ideals, pride, moral conscience, justice and equality, everthing else could just be prostitutes with ringgit and cents! Hahahaaa….

Wow! I’m really impressed! GERAKAN is no different with UMNO afterall! Both are a willing prostitutes! Hahahaa…

I use to scroll many blogs daily, good job on this blog. In my opinion for GERAKAN to gain momentum and and be relevent again is to recruit more members, its very hard to join GERAKAN because membership forms can only be obtain in state offices and getting approval and proposer and seconder is somehow irrelevent, this means you only can join gerakan if you have friends or support within, what about the others? this is what i know from visiting the Gerakan site. This birocracy is makes it hard for people to join Gerakan to serve Malaysia, instead joining PKR is as simple as filling in the form that is easily available in their Web and submitting. I guess GERAKAN needs to view this simple issue seriously. If there is some other ways in joining GERAKAN, can someone let us know?

cilipadi is right. Gomen agents , they take part in walks , they take part in Bersih, they talk bad about gomen, so people think that they are good people, and they can get people’s trust to do work for gomen.

then, they influence you to do things, good for gomen and bad for rakyat, like you leaving now, so Gerakan do not leave gomen as a party. That would be bad for gomen, if Gerakan leaves. So they try to influence you to leave.

No harm done in checking and double checking before slamming the other guy. Time and time again we hear of people saying that we should boycott the MSM. I think it is a silly call. The boycott is nothing personal . Other than that how would you penalize such rubbish writers democratically ?
Probably you’re smart enough to separate good and rubbish . How about other laymen ? Students? Kids ? Foreigners ?

    Guys

Do this Ahmad consider us as Pendatangs when we frequent his petrol stataion? Since he is so hard headed, it is fair as why we continue to do business with him? We should boycott any of his business.

BTW, Gerakan chose the easy part. Gerakan has no history and seek comfort zone with BN. Gerakan has no struggle. Ideology is only a theory if they are not actioned.

Dr Hsu, since you study in Singapore, please look at PAP’s struggle with the British, Communists, Trade Unions and even those in Malaya. DAP has some history and has been quite consistent although not perfect. In the 70’s, they have been shouting but people does not want to listen because they are more keen on the rice bowl.

Meanwhile, the court of public opinion seems to have taken things in motion.

An SMS has been circulating since yesterday urging people to stop patronising a petrol station which is owned by Ahmad Ismail’s family. The station, under the Shell brand, is identified as the one located at Island Glades, Penang.

It cannot be missed as one drives out from the tunnel heading along Green Lane towards George Town. It’s located on the left of the road, in front of the Gembira Parade supermarket.

On Time for Gerakan to regain credibility ,

My take is do not rush into making hasty decisions . Gerakan should stay put in BN for he time being and see how the situation developes .

The water is very murky now , wait till all the sediments settle down , then you get a clear picture of the whole situation . As it is within the next couple of months will see drastic changes to the political landscape with MCA having their party elections and thus a change in the party’s leadership , so is Gerakan and UMNO in December . With new leadership changes , there will be new policies , new direction in BN .

Lets wait for a little while longer . Jumping out is easy , jumping back in is definety not easy . Surrendering your Malaysian passport is easy . To get back your citizenship ..not possible or near impossible .

    Dr Hsu,

Actually Dr if you look at Gerakan today , they are in a dilemma , they leave BN and join PKR , do you think they will be accepted by the PKR leadership ? They would be viewed with suspicions on their intentions . Further Tan Sri image with Anwar also doesn’t look good . When Anwar war DPM he bodek like nobody’s business , when Anwar was down and out , he turned his face the other way . So do you think Anwar would look at him like it never happened when he was down and out ? I doubt it . Then there’s the other equation on DAP . Guan Eng and Kit Siang also cannot see eye to eye with KTK . Look at kit Siang’s statement recently concerning frogs .

For Gerakan to stay back in BN , everyone looks down poorly on them . Maybe their cycle of existence has come one full cycle .

The only options left is a) sit still hold tight and slowly rebuilt the party and image .
    b) Disband and join MCA and the rest non Chinese in the party join other BN conponent parties or whatever . This is the only way out if they have the Chinese community’s welfare at heart . At least the Chinese are not too disintegrated with so many Chinese based parties .

    Dr Hsu,

You did the right thing in deleting comments bordering on personal attacks.

But have you pondered a while as to why the personal attacks crop up? There seems to be a good reason for this. I shall try my best to explain rationally.

I note that you are referring mainly to monsterball and without malice, I would say that although his comments are generally on issues, many of them (comments) sometimes appear not only senseless, way of the mark, but actually provocative as well. Monsterball in his enthusiasm, may not realize this, but those reading the comments certainly do. Chaptokam is one of them, and as such I don’t blame people like him for criticising monsterball.

By the way the “war” between monsterball and chaptokam is not only in your blog but also in susan loone’s. I believe they are also in other blogs where both post their comments.

I would like to add that even while some of monsterball’s comments are on issues, many people find them absolutely boring, repetitive, written in very bad English, poor grammar… contributing nothing at all to the discussion except to waste your valuable bandwith. His writing style is such that he writes as if he talks…that is why sometimes his trend of thought gets disjointed, jumping from one topic to the next…the result is confusion. I think many people get fed up when they read such gibberish, and worst of all, monsterball is very long-winded.

On that score, Dr Hsu, I suggest, again without malice, that you delete some of monsterball’s comments, which I am sure many would agree with me that they are absolute nonsense. I believe it is the response of many readers of what they perceive to be monsterball’s senseless comments that riled him up, prompting him to make personal attacks on them, using foul and obscene language with expletives…and naturally they choose to hit him back…and there you have the inevitable “war” in cyberspace. This has not only happened in your blog, but also other blogs, especially Malaysia Today..where the attacks on monsterball are enough to fill 10 National Libraries!

There is enough said in the blogs about monsterball and the conclusion any one surfing the net and accessing the archives of blogs which monsterball had posted his comments, is that he is not a well-liked character.

He seems to relish in this and in fact provokes others to attack him. I do not know much about this monsterball, but it seems he is a bored retiree in his late 60s or early 70s or something who has nothing better to do than surf the net, giving airs about himself of who he is and what he does, (which many would take with a pinch of salt) and make either senseless or provocative comments at others to invite them to hit back at him…which many did.

Dr Hsu, I would like to reiterate here that my long letter here is not to attack monsterball or others but to try to give a proper perspective and explanation to what had recently happened in your blog which greatly upset you.

I hope monsterball, chaptokam and others affected will take it in the right spirit and not be offended and bear with what I had said in a move to find an amicable solution to the problem you are facing, Dr Hsu.

Keep up the good work in your blog, anyway. By the way I am one of those who are in favour of Gerakan pulling out of BN and reverting to its original multi-racial principles when it was first founded 40 years ago.

    Adam Kontiki

Thank you for writing such a long comment . What you have written is factual and correct . In most of the cases if you bother to check back is that he is the one who goes on the offensive first , like an animal trying to establish their territory . The moment someone else intrude into their territory they go on the offensive . That’s his mentality . The other is the method of countering such attacks . Where you have to use the same type of language to counter such where offensive language are used . If you use the soft approach like trying to talk sense into that person , it doesn’t work , worse he’ll try to stamp his superiority over you . Or the best method is IGNORE HIM which I have done so and let people treat him like a mad man . And obviously the best of the best is DELETE all his messages everytime it is posted unless his comments are not deemed offensive .

Wow, their hatred for this racist had turned them into racists themselves when they label whole races in derogatory terms.

I had no choice but to delete these comments much as I hated it.

Doc, how do we explain to angry people that by generalizing an entire race based on the actions of a few is the foundation for racism?

Sigh Doc, this has to be another low point (which I’ve complained to you so many times before) when faced with reality of our country.

    Adam,

I would like to elaborate a bit on your comments as well as Dr Hsu’s follow up reply to you stating his unhappiness about personal attacks in his blog and the main figure in this case, call him the “culprit” or “victim”, whatever, is this chap monsterball.

Dr Hsu mentioned about freedom of expression, but some like monsterball, obviously interpret this as a blank cheque for you to post any comments you like – irrespective of whether you irritate others or not. Now you can see that monsterball posts comments like nobody’s business on anything and everything under the sun – whether it is related to the topic under discussion or not. In other words he appears to be suffering from verbal diarrhoea. For this topic alone, out of curiosity, I took the trouble to count the number of postings to illustrate my point. I find that out of 84 postings, monsterball alone posted some 21, the most for any one person, and sometimes he posted 7 or 8 messagfes in a row. That works out to be 1 for every 5 postings in under this topic – definitely a lot when the average person posts one or 2 comments at the most. And sad to say, and with due respect to monsterball, practically all of them, if any, contribute very little to the discussion. In fact most of them have very little value and tend to go off tangent. Now I don’t know how others feel, but for myself, I think, and with due respect to him again, that he is abusing this freedom of speech privilege allowed by Dr Hsu in his blog. Obviously monsterball is not aware that freedom of speech comes with the responsibility of not flooding this blog with a lot of gibberish to the point that many people get fed up. He should take the cue from some of the negative reactions to his postings, but obviously he does not. Well some react by just ignoring him or scrolling past his comments, while others tend to be cynical and give him a piece of their mind. It is on such occasions that monsterball flares up and replies with vulgar language, expletives, obscenities. Monsterball seems to think that he is entitled to freely shoot his views from his hip, and others should not deny him this right. Fair enough. But he also does not realize that others have the same right as him too – to speak up freely what they don’t like about what he posted. This, in essence, is freedom of speech and democracy, and it applies to everyone, not only monsterball as he is inclined to think. him. Some people criticise monsterball in polite terms while others don’t pull their punches, but the bottom line is all those who criticise him don’t like his comments. That is their right just as monsterball has the right to air his views.

I think most people would agree with me that monsterball seems to have a big ego, thinks he’s very smart, and therefore shoots from his hip. He does not realize that he can be very stupid especially when he gets his facts wrong and others ridicule him, and he gets angry and lashes back…mainly with expletives. And that is how the cyber war in Dr Hsu’s blog as well as others continues, with monsterball always as one of the parties.

Monsterball, I have nothing personal against you, but I think that you are doing more harm than good – to your goodself – by overposting. If you are someone like Kim Quek, Pin Pan Dan, Richard Teo or any of the well-known contributors to the letters section of Malaysiakini or Vox populi, it is a different matter. Even these people don’t freely shoot from their hips. But sad to say you are not. I think you want people to think you are smart and wise, but in doing you only end up in making them feel that you are nothing but a cheap publicity seeker. That was exactly what happened in Malaysia Today some time ago and you don’t seem to have learnt your lesson. In fact you became even more defiant than ever, going by your postings in Dr Hsu’s and Susan’s blog. Well that is your prerogative – and it comes with a high price.

A very good day to you my friend.

I just received this , that he the racist Ah mad Ismail is the share holder / co-owner of Subaidah Nasi Kandar located in Tanjong Tokong opposite the Caltex Petrol station and the other at Bukit Jambul .

Leave it to your discretion but I am boycotting Subaidah Nasi Kandar , which is just opposite my house .
Am also told that the Shell petrol station in Island Glades does belong to him and he has asked his supervisor to come out to deny the sms that Ahmad is the owner . His guy Seraz Ahmad 46 yrs old who claims he is the stations owner looks suspicious as he claims that he has been operating the station for 16 years and has no plans to make a police report over the SMS .

I find it suspicious as he has run the station for 16 years , that makes it , he owned the petrol station at the age of 30 years old since he is 46 now which is strange that a 30 yr old could afford to buy and run a petrol station . Right now its so difficult to even own a petrol station even after getting approval from the Petrol company , you still need to get approval from the Domestic Trade and Enterprise Ministry . Secondly why is he afraid to lodge a police report ? if his business is indeed will be affected by the Boycott ? Thirdly its a coincidence his name also has a Ahmad ? his son ? you think about it !

Monsterball, I sincerely appeal to you to let bygone be bygone and just concentrate on the importat issues.

We are facing a lot of issues now, all urgent and important, i think personal things should be cast aside.

I have thousands of comments already, it is impossible for me to go back and delete every comment, especially i have a busy work schedule, social works ,etc to attend to. In fact , because of the flare up on and off , i have to devout a lot of them deleting messages and modurating, which can otherwise be channelled to more productive use.

I have also not deleted many of your comments targeting people before, like those you target true Malaysian, romerz and so on.

    Dr Hsu,

I agree with you that we are facing a lot of issues, especially important ones like whether 16 Sept will see change of govt or whether Ops Lallang 2 is now on with the ISA arrests of Raja Petra, Theresa Kok and Sin Chew reporter Tan Hoon Cheng.

But from the latest 4 comments he posted above, obviously this chap called monsterball is more concerned with heaping personal abuse on some people who took the trouble to tell him truthfully that not only many of his comments, but also the manner he posted them, was not quite right. As such many readers rightly feel that their attention had been diverted from the issues in question in your blog. By flaring up as he did and hurling more abuse, in a bid to settle scores with all those whom he thinks offended him, monsterball has proven himself to be exactly what had been said of him here….insensitive, rude, vulgar, arrogant, egocentric, and …above all harbouring delusions of grandeur. It must have really hurt him a lot to be woken up by some of the comments in this blog reminding him that he was naked, when all the time like the proverbial emperor, he thought he had the finest clothes on. Already by flaring up and hurling abuse to exhibit symptoms of verbal diarrhoea, monsterball is doing more harm to himself than all those he regard as his enemies in cyberspace.

Please advise him to consult a psychiatrist to help him remove that serious chip on his shoulder before his inability to manage his anger any further leads him to do something rash and stupid – to himself. Thank you.

monsterball, what you failed to realise is that there were peace in the blog until you posted above a few comments that were totally centring on ‘self”. . Because of that , ‘enough is enough’ posts the advice. And that is the REAL Pattern. DO you not see it? SO mant others have emailed me and comment about the ulterior motives behind creating ‘ wars’ in blogs, but I do not believe them.

If you have accepted my sincere appeal to you to just move on, i am sure enough is enough won’t post what he or she had posted

Some times we cannot always blame the others. We cannot be right all the time and people cannot be wrong all the time.

I have on so many occsions request that we channel our energy to national issues, because ‘self’ is actually not important.

I hope u will accept my this request again to just comment on issues, and not on anything else.

    Monsterball,

what you fail to realize is that you are the one who irritated others in the first place with your comments. They have been shown to be offensive and personalized, especially to chaptokam, cilipadi, and others. The so called irritations you bring up are in fact their reactions, which you unfairly regard as irritations. I am sure many will agree with me that knowlingly or unknowingly, you are behaving like some UMNO leaders. Ironically you are lambasting some of them like Ahmad Ismail. He has been notorious to incite racial tension while campaigning in Permatang Pauh where he referred to the Chinese as squatters, not fit to be equal citizens as bumiputras. Yet when some of the Chinese politicians in both BN and opposition react to his remarks, he accuses them of being racists. In your case, you irritate others as rightly pointed out by them. Yet you turn round and accuse them of irritating you! The comparison of your outbursts with certain UMNO leaders’ incitement may not be completely identical, but there is nevertheless, a similarity which can be discerned. I am sorry to have said what I said, which may upset you, but the truth needs to be told. A spade cannot be called by any other name, I am afraid.

    Dr Hsu,
Thanks for bearing with me re above comment on monsterball. In moving on, as per your suggestion, I would like to know whether,
as a Gerakan member, you see the possibility of your party withdrawing from BN over the recent ISA detentions, which upset some of your leaders greatly. I understand Chia Kwang Chye and Teng Hock Nan were quite quite vocal over this and went to the police h/q in Georgetown to show Sin Chew reporter Tan Hoon Cheng their support. I hope Gerakan can use this as a good excuse to pull out of BN and join Pakatan Rakyat.

    Regards,

    Yap Eng Cheng

Yap EC, I cannot answer the leaders. But these 2 days I have received lots of sms, calls and emails from those members who before this ISA crackdown were still adopting a “stay back in BN’ attitude. They are now all very angry and realise that UMNO will never change. ANd these members now agree with me that Gerakan needs to get out of BN immediately.

One member from Selangor was telling me that many of his members would quit Gerakan if they choose to stay back in BN.

So as I see it, this is the last window of opportunity for Gerakan to withdraw and stand on its own feet. If the leaders do not listen to the growing voice of the grassroots, they will either be voted out or there would be a big exodus of members out.

Chia and Teng are both vocal, but both are involved in a fight to be the next Gerakan Penang Chairman. If one is vocal and the other keep quiet, who do you think the members of Penang will vote? I think their being vocal has a lot to do with the circumstances.

    Dr Hsu,

Thanks for your reply. I am sure there is still some rationality and sanity among the top Gerakan leaders in assessing the party’s position afterf 8 Mar. All of you would have unanimously blamed UMNO’s racism and bullying of the Chinese as the major cause of the Gerakan’s defeat, especially in Penang where it was completely wiped out. Now you hear of Koh Tsu Koon (and also some Gerakan leaders) still hoping to knock some sense into UMNO’s head to make it more Malaysian when deep down in their hearts, they know this is impossible. Have Gerakan leaders like Koh Tsu Koon ever pondered that before 8 Mar when Gerakan was in a much stronger position (at least in control of Penang) whatever its advice to UMNO fell on deaf ears. Worse still some UMNO leaders become even more racist to mock Penang. What makes Koh Tsu Koon think that with only 2 miserable MPs and perhaps 3 or 4 assemblymen, a far weakened position compared to pre-Mar 8, UMNO or at least Badawi will listen to Gerakan? The Ahmad Ismail episode clearly speaks volumes of how UMNO is prepared to humiliate Gerakan. Not content with Ahmad Ismail refusing to apologize, his supporter even tore up Koh Tsu Koon’s photo! These two acts are enough to make any BN component with whatever little dignity left give UMNO the middle finger! Koh Tsu Koon in his ties with UMNO is behaving very much like Patricia Hearst in 1974 when the former US heiress actually sided with her kidnappers – the Symbionese army – against her own parents and police. Looks like Koh will continue to take UMNO’s side even if Badawi and UMNO spit on, having surrendered completely to the tormentor! I’m sure many of you still in Gerakan support what Dr Toh Kin Woon, Lee Kah Choon and Dr Tan Kee Kwong have done- resign from the party where the constraints are immediately removed for them to give their full and frank opinion of UMNO! Dr Tan has joined PKRM and it will be a matter of time before Dr Toh does. And in Penang, Lee Kah Choon is happy working for the DAP-led PR govt to source foreign investments.

Gerakan’s biggest mistake was for Lim Chong Eu to bring the party into BN in 1973 or thereabouts. As we look at the 35 year event now, Chong Eu was prepared to sacrifice Gerakan’s multi-racial principles for federal funds to develop Penang. As we can see with Gerakan in the BN, Penang managed to get some development, but this was nowhere compared to the other UMNO states in view of them KL treating a “Chinese-dominated” state like Penang as a stepson. The heavy price UMNO extracted from Gerakan was the latter being forced to give up its multi-racial orientation to eventually degenerate into a Chinese-based party like the MCA. And that caused Gerakan’s downfall on 8 Mar 2008. Koh Tsu Koon, Chia Kwang Chye, Teng Hock Nan and others would be fools to think Gerakan can recover by sticking to the status quo in the BN where UMNO would despise Gerakan even more. Unless Gerakan joins the PR where it can at least revert to its original multi-racialism, there is no option for Gerakan in BN – except slow political demise

It was indeed a mistake for Dr. Lim Chong Eu to bring Gerakan into BN. I mentioned this point and again by E C Yap.

After joining BN, Umno was smart to split the Penang state seats so that Gerakan and MCA share equally the number of Chinese majority seats whilst it controls a large chunk of Malay majority seats where if Chinese votes for opposition party, DAP, then Gerakan would not able to form state government with the so-called ‘help’ from Umno.

This seats arrangement had resulted in Gerakan being tightly controlled by Umno, though at face value, they were like ‘abang-adik’. So, we can say such partnership as sincere one?

Under present circumstances, the condition facing by Gerakan is even worse than before. It is not even respected by a Umno warload. Gerakan need to be out from BN, stick to its multiracial ideology, nurse its injury soonest possible. If not, you can expect to see it has to disband itself as exodus of members is happening soon.
    So, un

E C YAp, I would just like to invite you to read a few of my articles posted in this blog beofre.

I have been one of the strongest advocate of leaving Bn as far back as 2006, when I was even asked by a senior leader that perhaps I should join the opposition during a dialogue.

I view my role now is to talk sense into the grassroots and push for Gerakan to move out of BN in order to savage whatever little support that it still has, and rebuilt it slowly up.

As for Lim Chong Eu’s move to take Gerakan into BN, please read this post:

    Dr Hsu,

Correct me if I am wrong, but do you smell a rat somewhere in the strident objections to the ISA by some MCA and Gerakan leaders..and UMNO, especially UMNO youth not lashing back at them as they normally do? The unusual silence on the part of UMNO towards MCA/Gerakan rantings on ISA makes me feel that UMNO is using them to get back Chinese support lost to the PR on 8 Mar. Notice that when Sin Chew journalist Tan Hoon Cheng was released from ISA detention, the MCA lost no time in trying to claim credit and seem to resent the fact that the police told Penang CM Lim Guan Eng that Hoon Cheng would be released later in the day. What do you think?
