Last 2 months, so much have happened that are not right:
first, a state government toppled through hopping
Then a group of youth members from a certain party went into Parliament to confront an MP..
Then photos of seminude pictures of a ADUN surfaced, photos taken while she was asleep
Then there is the use of Sedition Act against an oppostion MP, a former lion of Jeluton, giving a perception of selective persecution prosecution,
A would be contestant for a top post of UMNO was barred from contesting, while others under the investigated under the same offense were given warnings, giving a perception that there is selective punishment even for its own kind,
What do you make out of these??
The signs are there that a different style of government will be in place after the change over..
I have hoped (against hope) that a more liberal and people friendly and fairer policies would be adopted… BUt looking at the above incidents in the past 2 months, i think my hope will not be realised and certainly there would be more control and suppression of freedom of speech . ..
I have posted the Iranian experience in my last post ( Lessons from a theocratic state) hoping that the new incoming leadership would learn something from it… That suppression of human rights and freedom of speech could not stifle the masses from changing the government….That a government cannot go against the wills of the people for long…. The Shah had ordered its army to shoot on sight and into the demonstrating crowd, but in the end, he was overthrown..
The best way to gain the trust of the people is to practise good governance, be more liberal and fair, cut down on corruption and abuses, manage the people’s money well, be serious in improving the standard of living… etc etc and not by adopting suppressive measures nor using the state apparatus to selectively persecute political opponents…
History has shown time and again, a corrupt government cannot last long…

Dear Dr Hsu, your hopes and aspiration were still born the moment you thought it up. Being a member of Gerakan and from one that is quite “in” the local political scene, I am actually quite surprised that you have such hopes and expectations at all.
The ruling government is incapable of changing, does not want to change and will not change its wayward, corrupted and evil way of sucking the country dry.One after another incident has proven it to be so…..again and again. The people are very tired of them and the only hope is for the people to rise up and take the necessary actions to rid the country of such politicians. At this stage any other political party/parties would give more hope that UMNO/BN.
Otherwise this country will go the way of Lebanon of the 70s and 80s or Sri Lanka of the 80s and 90s. And we cannot afford to allow that to happen. We must all take the destiny of this country into our own hands, for leaving it to UMNO/BN would be another 50 years of chaos and disaster for all of us.

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has made an impassioned plea to the King to not appoint Datuk Seri Najib Razak as prime minister, and instead appoint someone else from Umno “to bring us back from the brink.”

Umno has to clean up its act because a large proportion of the people in the country view Umno as arrogant and steeped in unhealthy practices, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The god had spoken, he wants to clean up umno!!
But my answer to him is;
Can you take the word of a person with so many baggages hanging around him to believe in what he said and promises. Most of what he described as things that need to be cleaned up and reformed are part and parcel of himself. If he does not reform and clean up himself first, how is he going to clean up umno?
Nothing is going to stop him from becoming the PM, not even the Agong. We just have to live with it till the next GE. We just hope that he will not lock up everyone who are against him, trample the constitution to make him more untouchable or send his critics into oblivion.

But here lies a caveat. A regime is at its most dangerous when it is fearful of losing power. What tricks will Umno spring on the hapless rakyat to prevent itself being booted out? Will the rakyat stand up to reclaim the country from these plunderers when the time comes?

With 900 over complaints, the figures speak for itself and whether it is serious for reform, those caught in numbers speak for itself, less than 2 dozen and perhaps, one or two big fishes.
It is all sandiwara, a PR exercise at best. Barring from contest but can keep government portfolio. So many tale-telling signs that the dying dinosaur is not ready for changes. The only changes will be tightening the screw on the rakyat.
Look at the candidates, all old mindsets and baggages they carry with a cupboard full of skeletons. All these have proven that you can forget any radical changes coming to positive.
Yes, only voters can change them. There is no other way…it’s Hopson choice.

Honestly, I gave up hope on these bunch of gerakan, mca & BN commentators in this forum. They conciously know the whole system they are in is rot to hell and know the root causes of all these problems and yet still harbour hope on their master. Just can’t find the logic behind their blind loyalty.
Come to think of this, their loyalty are on the positions they hold and so-calleld kangtao they are getting from their political master, not really loyalty to their parties, Umno & BN as a whole. Just look at your Perak guy, he happily and unashamedly accept the so-called ‘Advisor’ post.
Then KTK. He still has the face to tell people to give chance to Umno / BN.
Whatever happening in Umno as we see are not convincing at all. How can a pot reform kettles?
Whatever, they may not want to accept my view since I am just a non-Malaysian, but if they really want to accept my view to regain people’s support, my tip to them is to go for fresh GE. People’s support to Umno & BN will be back to you after the present leaders are gone because present set of leaders just couldn’t change.
Whatever, accept or not accept my tip, you decide. I am not a Malaysian, after all……

UMNO is a forgone conclusion, they cannot reform, in fact, after 308, they have but gone ultra-right.
Now, the BIG question is that whether the other BeEnd component parties can reform ?
If they can’t, it is just a confirmation of what we believe in and the MAIN reason why we voted against BeEnd.
That is, the rest of BeEnd component parties are but a fraud, a false facade put up under the direction of UMNO to present a make believe “muhibbah” coalition.
But instead it is a wolf in sheepskin, and as demonstrated after 308, we are deskinning the wolf.
Actually the other BeEnd component parties, MCA, MIC, Gerakan, dan lain lain are the worse, because they are hypocrites. At least UMNO is showing their true colours.
Therefore, Malaysian, beware of what really is behind BeEnd.

I was told that the SME loan guarantee has a condition. If you are not of the right kind there is a 101 reasons why your application is not processed.
I wonder why MCA and Gerakan are still supporting this line. I believe many SMEs will drop like died flies this year. There are not enough demand and projects to sustain their operation.
If the govt continue to have this division, then it will be difficult to recover from the crisis. Unemployment will climb.

Pudu is much better now except that there are many cases of snatch thefts in the backlanes…
When i first opened in the 80s, there were so many Tai Ko coming to ask for protection money and I have always turned them down politely….
Since some of us helped to form a RT (Kg Brunei section 3) , and the end of rent control, the area is much better now. Of course if you care to go to Jln Pasar, it is like a little CHina with some many Chinese nationals there seeling things on the road side, but i seldom go to Jln Pasar.
I guess, after parcticing so many yrs there, and knowing everyone from house one to house no 100 (almost all have been treated by me one time or another),, and evry kids that i have treated in the 80s are now all adults, even the gangsters there have some respect for me…
IN the 80s till now, and long before i joined political party, I have been an adviser to the Pudu Hawkers and petty traders association. I guess that help to get the respect too, as this is an area where everyone is either a hawker or a petty trader..

Gerakan leadership has chosen to tie its future to Umno. It will sink with Umno but it will not necessarily rise with Umno.
Fact is, Gerakan is redundant to Umno now after losing their old power base in Penang. Umno has MCA to deal with the Chinese.
Gerakan’s fate mirrors that of PPP after this party lost its power base in Perak.
Gerakan’s future in BN depends on re-capturing Penang but kowtowing to Umno isn’t going to help.

I kind of agree with annoyed.
KTK was not prepared for tackling politics tough problems.
KTK’s approach is classic trader, a typical Malaysian trait born of generations of traders.
And I suspect his forebears were traders in Penang, like many people there.
Traders dont believe in rocking the boat. Their mentalities are – What do you want, we can talk and settle. I give your this, you give me that.
This worked when time was good.
Today, time is different. This time we need change. This is not the time to compromise on principles.
Therefore, we need leaders who can take charge.
Leaders who can fight for the change. And KTK is not such a leader. He is not the right person for Gerakan for time we are in.
So is it any surprise that he is performing far below expectation. I am surprised that Gerakan members had not given him the famous Donald Trump’s line – “you are fired”

I had an interesting discussion with my french friend on the situation in France. This may have an impact on us in time to come.
1. There had been an organised nationwide strike in France. The demand was for the govt to protect the labour during the economic crisis. Sakorzy, the PM said that the govt cannot do much more, given it is 60B euro in debt, i.e. France is broke.
If the govt do not do anything, a second strike will be organised.
2. The european govts are concerned that the strike may spread and turn violent. If the strike become violent, we may see a second storming of the Bastille. Many european countries could be hit by strikes. And street battles?
3. According to my french friend, there are two persons who people see as being able to fix things. Sakorzy who is on the right wing, and another guy who is on the extreme left wing – i.e. communism. If Sakorzy dont fix the economic crisis problem, people may switch support to the communists. So, there is a possibility that communism may flourish in the land of its origin.
4. There is a feeling in east germany, that it may that unification was a mistake.
We could see a resurgence of communism as a result the crisis. For sure, labour will become more aggressive and left wing politics gain ascendancy.
Finally, we may see the world going one full circle.

BN politicians looking for kangdao, and you scratch my back, I scratch yours……I ampu you, you give me biscuit crumbs. They stoop to the lowest to get these kangdao and crumbs.
Being an ideologist yourself, you can write your ideals till all the cows agree with you, but at end of days, if voters are intoxicated by these BN politicians when voting time dues, your ideals that voters bought (free of charge, no hard cash involves), will go into drains and history will repeat itself on and on. These BN politicians will still having their last laugh at ideologists like you and many.
What to do then? No point to remain as ‘ideologist’ among these scratching backs politicians, they won’t buy your ideals.
People like you should go all out to keep reminding voters to vote against, not just Umno, but its scratching back partners. If not, things back to square one.

KTK’s approach is classic trader, a typical Malaysian trait born of generations of traders.
And I suspect his forebears were traders in Penang,
His father was a very prominent man in Penang , Datuk Koh Peng Tin , and was a staunch MCA supporter . He had a brother in law Mr Gooi who was an ex-DAP assemblyman . So thier family was quite rojak politically , with him in Gerakan .

The psyche of Malaysians is a trader – buy and sell.
The history of the land (other than the orang alsi) had always been trading. Many of the prominent families were founded on trading. This had been and is still the strength. Is it any wonder when Malaysia is the 19th largest trading nation in the world.
However, when trading is applied to politics, it is bad.
Now we see it in UMNO, trading money for votes – money politics. Somehow, they dont see anything wrong. Ali Rustam – no reason to resign as CM.
UMNO with Gerakan, MCA and MIC – Dr. Hsu has so nicely described what happened.

Being in Gerakan, what was the sentiments when UMNO Penang played the racial card calling the Chinese Pendatangs and the UMNOputras leaders of Penang UMNO publicly tearing and stamping the ex-CM KTK’s official photo ?
Despite all these threats and call for Gerakan to leave BN , why is it that Gerakan still want to sleep with UMNO ? Doesn’t Gerakan have any face and dignity at all ?
The corrupt practices in UMNO and BN component parties are despicable and yet no one within BN worth his pinch of salt came out and condemn it.
I have not heard anything on this issue from you, Dr. Hsu either !
You have to agree that Gerakan is a sunset party and the PRU in March 08 is a teatimony to this trend. Fighting for your political principles is one thing but groping in the dark corridors of BN is another.
