Make public the KPI of all ministries

In today’s Star, it was reported that the Minister of High education, Khaled Nordin, wanted the KPI (Key Performance Index) of the various minsitries NOT to be made public, as he said that this might lead to inaccurate deductions.

I beg to differ.

Firstly, on a point of principle, a government must be accountable and transparent, and as such , KPI as a measure of  the effectiveness of the delivery system must be made public. This is because the government derives its revenue from the people, and the ministers as head of the ministries are elected by the people (except those who are appointed via the Senate). The people thus have the right to know how each ministry and  minister is doing…

Secondly, letting public know about the performance of the ministries would enhance the effectiveness of the KPI. The ministires that do not perform well would have no choice but to buck up ; otherwise the ministers concerned would have a hard time selling himself to the electorate when the next election comes.

Thirdly, letting public know about the KPI would also serve as a incentive for the ministries to compete against each other.

There is really nothing to hide from the public, who are the boss of the country, so to speak.

Last but not least,, there should not be any manipulations of data to give false KPI, and anyone found to have done so, must face the sack immediately.
