First, we have the announcement that a certain assemblyman, a deputy head of a state, is under investigation for corruption.
The media played it up, and the notion that a person is innocent until proven guilty is conveniently forgotten in this case. The impression given was that he is really guilty.
The assemblyman resigned. A byelection is going to be called, as in accordance to election law of the country.
Then, we have the side opposite to this assemblyman suddenly saying that they will give this by election a miss, so as not to ‘waste public fund”.. How grand sounding and how convenient, bearing in mind that this waste is nothing if we compare it to the commission of many hundred millions…
Of course, if the intention is really to save fund and reduce politicking , then I support it… But looking at the whole thing, it may not be as simple as it appears.. A bigger reason, which has been mentioned in many blogs, is that it fears losing again.
Then the Old Horse started saying that there must be a contest. The new Head on the helm is now caught in a difficult position.
To go for contest would give a perception that the Old Horse is still in control. To give a walkover , like the initial intention, would alienate those allied to the Old Horse. The new Head has seen how the Old Horse has pushed the Old Head down the ravine, even the Old Head’s SIL cannot get a post despite winning the Youth position.
Suddenly, the sky is clear..The heave of relief is heard.. The investigating authority suddenly said that there is no case for the corruption.. after all the hoo haa , the assemblyman is not corrupt after all.
How convenient this has come.. The timing is just right..
Now, the assemblyman can retract his letter of resignation, there will be no more byelection as wished by the new Head, the dilemma whether to contest or not is now over, the potential confrontation with the old Horse is again over…….Everyone is a winner… A win win situation really..
What is left is of course the perception that everything in this Bolehland is under manipulation…. They still have not got it yet after many defeats.

To get the right perception, Malaysians should stand “at the top” of the mountain and look down…..down to the history of the UMNOputra leadership.
The Aiyo Yoyo era in Selangor, the Cha-karia in Klang, the costs of the screw-driver, the mad-rempits, the ear-to-ear squat, thousand or million ringgit spent on flower-pots or flag-pole in Penang and Perak respectively..
The repair costs to the ceiling of the National Zoo by semi-value, the shouting matches by binatang representatives, the floating of the keris, the buy-buy at by-elections, santa claus distribution also at by-elections, the self-denial that cool-rupted party members should not be investigated by the agency of cows and cars…etc
Of course, Zam the great, then came Strawberry and now Rice-ahh as information and communication chiefs….VVIP treatment for bloggers on free curry and accommodation.

While we are immersed in silly political games, the world is whizzing us by.
I am intrigued by a video i saw last night and a news article I read just now. First on the video, It demonstrated a new toy which will be released end of this year – a toy that let a player use the brain wave to control the movement of a ping pong ball.
The news article was from MI. “Brain-Twitter project offers hope to paralysed patients” – a device and software to send a message on twitter using brainwave and no keyboard.
We are seeing the start of development of mentalics ( a term used by Issac Asimov – a science fiction writer for people with mental power). This is moving into the 22nd century stuff.
I believe the future is in mental development. (you should read the Foundation series – my favorite science fictions)
And here we are still stuck in the medieval ages.
And I agree with Taikothai. We should vamoose and do better things with our life. There are so much more opportunities to expand our mind out there.

I believe Fairus has a case to answer for the RM10,000 deposited into his account by a quarry operator.
Of course everybody claims it is a “loan” when found out but is the quarry operator his relative or long time friend? Nothing has been heard about this.
Based on the irrefutable bank transaction, I should think MACC has a pretty strong case against Fairus.
The MACC stated that Fairus’ area of responsibility does not involve quarry operators. This is a pretty weak argument as a Deputy CM can still exert influence outside his scope of responsibilities.
It looks like the MACC is playing politics just like the EC. Everything is corrupted in Bolehland.

Elections Commission cannot even answer why they did not announce their decision on the Penanti vacany when they met this week. The EC does not seem to want to answer this at all.

All they want to hear are nice comments that make them ‘shiok sendiri’.

Let’s see what your stats reveal – age 50’s, medical doctor with own practice, income Rm 6 figures, taxpayer, responsible husband and father, married with grown children whom you put through university, church goer, music lover, blogger, Gerakan cc member, no criminal record, holds non-violent but often critical views of government policies and practices. Hates hypocrisy. Detests self serving politicians. Practices meritocracy. Wants a better Malaysia for all, not just for BN/Umno members.
Hey! Like me, many commentators in this blog share similar statistics with your profile ( please correct if erroneous) and share your views on certain issues you blog about. We must be in danger of being considered anti-establishment as well. Oh well, I suppose I’ll have to live with that tag in that case. Basically that is where the difference of BN and PR lies.
IN PR, each component can criticises the other and yet there is no open war. IN BN, just imagine if OTK or KTK expresses regret or displeasure at UMNO Chief, that would be torn pictures, demons outside their HQs, etc.
I have metioned many times to my top leaders that they have to fight for more space of dissent within BN, and cannot be sycophants… That is the main reason why Gerakan lost..
If Karpal or LGE can criticise PKR and PAS and yet they can sit down and thrash out their differences, why can’t KTK or OTK or Semivalue criticise UMNO and UMNO accept the criticism in good faith?
There lies the number one problem in the coalition. IT is not a coalition of equal partners, but rather, a partnership of major ad minor players, where the major player like the the major shareholders hod all the keys and the minor players just have to follow…
This subservience is the main cause of defeat, and to do away with this subservient , there is just one way for the components… opt out of the coalition and be an independnet entities, … whereby they can still support the good policies from whichever side…

Dear Dr Hsu,
I read in the chinese newspaper yesterday that there was a proposal to amend the Article 48(6) of the federal constitution which currently prohibits the wakit rakyat from resigning otherwise they will be ban for 5 years from being wakit rakyat.
It was mentioned by Tan Keng Liang (kedah gerakan youth) that there should be exemption if the wakit rakyat want to resign so to get the rakyat’s approval for him to hop to other party (must be referring to Perak crisis).
What is your view on this Dr Hsu?
I manage to get the view of Lim Kit Siang, which disagree completely with his the other proposal to impose penalty of RM50k for ADUN n RM100k for MP if they quit without valid reason. I do not agree with imposing penalty if the ADUN or MP wishes to resign..By not allowing him or her to stand for election for the next 5 years will already be enough punishment for a politician.
Just imagine, if BN has won all the 4 past by elections, would BN want to change the law? So this proposal to cahnge is more for BN’s convenience, not to be seen as a loser, and not for the grand sounding idea of not wasting funds and so on..
If they are really interested in saving funds, why should they sell the camrys which are so new ( 2 months old I believe?) ? By selling it now, the state will incur a loss over the depreciation.. and everyone of us know that the highest depreciation of a car is the first year or so.
But having said all these, I do believe that there should be a mechanism to prevent hopping from one party to another… some sort of an anti-hopping law… Anyone would wish to hop must go back to the people to seek a mandate again; after all the people are the real boss , the ADUN orMP is just a people’s representative; so if the people’s representative would want to change side, they must let the people decide..

BUT what if the assemblyman is no longer interested to be assemblyman in the next 5 years? i.e. he just resign to be businessman, or to further studies. Then he come back to contest 5 years later?

I think that there must a greater punishment for unreasonable resignation by assemblyman. I don’t agree with Tan’s idea as the punishment is not strong enough.

I am actually from Penang and a strong DAP supporter BUT i m very sick of PKR problem at Penanti. How can he just resign after 1 year in office? I think there should be some form of anti hopping mechanism …. But how to concile this with the 5 year ban needs to work out…Maybe certain qualification be added in.
Anti hopping mechanism should be in place to prevent what happens in Perak from happening again.. To prevent chang eof government not by people’s votes but by being ‘bought’over.. That is a farce to democracy..
How to work it out needs real pondering and serious thinking over… I cannot answer you now as to how.

I am very happy that you have subscribed such views as espoused in your column. Frankly, elections are essence of democracy. Be it these assemblymen or MPs resigned due to whatever reasons even if it’s frivilous, elections must still be carried out.
I strongly disagree and condemn everybody who says that Penanti by election is unnecessary due to wastage of money. Such people even very smart ones make such comment is an affront to all Malaysians. Nobody has the right to deny voters the right to vote. Penanti voters deserved the right. If Penanti voters think it’s unnecesary, they can opt not to vote. Voting in Malaysia is not compulsory. Sidetrack a bit, in order to combat irregularities in any elections in terms of vote counting, I propose to follow Singapore’s style. Make voting compulsory. Penanti voters too have the right to spoilt their votes too.
Najib & BN can give the election a miss. It happens many times in Singapore especially the area that I resided in (Toa Payoh-Bishan GRC) where the incumbents are too strong (Not anymore due to Mat Selamat’s great escapee. It’s all Wong Kan Seng’s fault, Deputy Prime Minister, 1st Minister of Home Affair).
For those who wished to demand for explanations from Anwar & LGE, I would suggest that joker to stand for election as an independent. And I would be very happy to campaign against that fella for very good reason

from my understanding after reading the newspaper, what had been proposed was to penalise the assemblyman (such as the one RM50k/100k by Kedah gerakan youth chief n mukhriz) who resigned without good reason – without good reason are like the recent stunt by Fairus at Penanti – to further studies and to give family more time.
Nothing was suggested that the by-election would not be conducted. It will still go on but SPR must make changes to law to penalise people like Fairus in the future.
Even if BN does not want to contest, the by election is still going on as there is already some independent announced their intention to contest (e.g. ex-PKR wanita).
I think looes74 got it all wrong as you might not have been following the news properly in malaysia.
